  • Over the years I have always had trouble getting some of these little shade/globe nuts off a lamp to be cleaned. Some are easy, but some are just stuck. Over time, the lamp porcelain becomes brittle and the nut has a hard time navigating the threads. This week, I spent twenty minutes getting a stuck nut off. Then I found a simple tool online, but it would take a week or more to arrive. So I spent 5 minutes and made my own tool from spare garage parts. It works great. The supreme cleaning commander of our home will not be able to take these off and put them back on easily. DIY rock on.

I don't know that you thought that I would be the target demo for this, but here I am, first to comment. Love the reuse of items you already have!

funny...I had to revisit this video to remind myself how I did this before...and notice its only been 4 months since the wife's amazing light transformation needed to be changed again...

Nice tool - Had the same problem - and no socket that would work - then a duh moment... I rotated the entire Globe counter clockwise and it loosened the ring enough to undo with my fingers!

Yeah. Have to be careful about wires twisting and loosening.

If you have a 1-7/8 Rigid vac, you can use one length of the hard tube. The 1-7/8 press fits over the nut, and loosens them. Or you can buy a Rigid 3 piece adapter kit, and use the 1-7/8 x 1-1/4 adapter, and add a length of 1-1/4 tube. Of course the actual tool is cheaper, but if you have a Rigid vac already you probably have what you need.

I wish you'd continued to reinserting that fitting into the ceiling, which is where I'm up to at the moment.

@@DrBDIY The very end. Having removed the light fitting and changed the globe, I needed to reinsert the fitting into the ceiling. I managed, but it would have helped to see it done, as it did for removing the fitting. And thanks for the video.

I have these metal rings with two tabs. Ridiculous.

I have cut the slots on various angles several times to fit a variety of rings. Works.

How did you manage to take it off? I have the same thing, but I’m afraid to get electrocuted by reaching up to you and twisting it off.😩😂

Hi. Safety first. Shut the light switch off first. You can also turn of the breaker. You can use a volt meter with non contact voltage testing to see if current is present.. If you are unsure, please get help. For the tool I hacked, it is PVC and doesn't conduct electricity. In addition, you are not putting the tool in the light socket, but around it. The grooves in the tool unscrew the shade nut easily Then I just reach in and grab it. I have used this tool many times. Thanks for asking and thinking about our safety.
