i remember being a little white kid in suburbia and being spellbound by the wiz when i saw it for the first time on the tele. i've never been a fan of musicals... probably because musicals were never like this... at least not that i can remember. i'm watching this and i am still entertained by it. totally unique and beautiful
I dont know why im so sad when i hear this song my parents use to play this movies and my siblings have's sleep over and my room and it will be 2:30 am and they put on the wiz and we all fall asleep and my parents come upstairs and come check on us and just smile and go back downstairs this brings back so much memories
I'm a white kid from a super white town in canada. I loved the wiz so much because it was so fantastic and joyfull and different than what i was used too. When i finaly saw the wizard of oz. I though it was a crummy rip of the wiz. Because its whole orders of magnitude better than the wizard of oz
I know what you mean. However, imI say they both have beautiful soul. They both speak to their respective generations and transcend time. They're both stars in the hall of fame when it comes to the story of the Wizard of Oz.
I remember as a kid, long before I got into musical theater, being confused as to why Miss One was basically "speaking" the lyrics. Now I look back and realize how dumb I was. That woman had a set of pipes that people could only DREAM of having. She just makes it seem so effortless!
I used to work in a movie theater back in the 70s we played thus movie for 1 month an a 1/2 .Me being a projections I never got tired of this movie lol .When I get a chance I watch The Wiz love the cast .Now another hand Saturday Night Fever lasted in my theater 3 months straight love that movie
I love the original wizard of oz, both aee good but in all honesty, this version is my favorite 😭 quincy jones just has a way with music and this musical is so magical
THE WAY IM SMILING (listening to this) is like a the 1st time!!! THIS WAS MY FAVORITE SONG(I think it's because of the munchkin's singing backup)!!!🎬♥️🎶🎶🎶🎶👏🏾👏🏾
I remember watching this film for the first time in the movie theater with my all-white friends (1978? '79?). Afterward, all we could talk about was how good it was (especially MJ). Nary a word about race or the fact that it was an all-black cast. it simply didn't matter.
Was roughly 14 when I first rented this dvd. I felt a mix of 'they're the cool kids' and 'mummy can I go play with them?' though I was nearly 10 years too old to ask that question
So do I. A great effective, expressive, and husky sound!! I wanted to know more about her so I looked for songs by her when she was younger, and there are some on UA-cam. She was a jazz singer in the '40s and '50s but even did an answer song to Elvis Presley's song "Are You Lonesome Tonight," by singing, "Yes, I'm Lonesome Tonight" in 1961.
I love that The Wiz show all 4 (well the feet & picture of one hahah) witches of Oz (Miss One The Good Witch of the North, Evermene - The Wicked Witch of the East, Evilene - The Wicked Witch of the West & Glenda - The Good Witch of the South
@@robertbonds6680But they showed her face. Eveilene had a picture of her during the scene she captured Dorothy and told her to give her the silver slippers. “A saint she was”. Even though she was dead, all witches were present in some form in this movie, just like the book.
This is one of the reasons I put this movie above the 1939 MGM movie. It’s funny how this movie/broadway musical worked the Witch of the North AND Glinda into the movie instead of trying to combine the two and still got story/plot.
omg. that is so cool. watching this i often wondered about all the actors and dancers. like, would i ever meet one... would i meet one and not even know it? that's so cool. thanks for commenting. were you in this scene? where was it shot? where are you from originally? did you have to travel to be part of this?
Seeing this as child was life changing.
I was thinking the exact same thing...this scene stuck with my from my childhood to a degree that I can't even explain.
I pray for a billion black ND Latino likes for this. Mud 2000s as a 7 year old in music class seeing this was such an influence
Yes it was truly ❤️
yes it was🩷
I am. Kid who has seen this or nah
No other version rival this one and the magic that Thelma Carpenter cast with her vocal.
Dadsdadadadsdadadasaaaa
maybe only the original classic with Judy Garland is the only one who can be compared with this masterpiece
No doubt. Thelma Carpenter, rest her soul.
amen
He's the Wiz and he lives in Ozzźzzz
This scene was pure joy. It represented kids from the hood, talent and joy.
she ate this song up effortlessly
on god😂😂
As an adult I realized Ms Numbers was the number runner🤣🤣🤣 dang that's hood 🤣🤣🤣
A what???

Lol yes she was
And they were graffiti
I just learned this today. Always wondered why she was named Miss One. LOL.
This playground captured a child's imagination perfectly
The only part I was EVER scared and creeped out by was when they came out that wall, not even the subway scared me 😂
Frrrr
I thought I was the only one frfr 😂😂😂
Me too and the Tin Man A Teeny part 😂
That scene and the subway scenes would give me nightmares as a kid 😂
God, I’m still spellbound by this movie; I LOVE the urban setting.
My absolute favorite song in the whole film
Mine too!
Mine is No Bad News.
Mine is this and you can’t win

This version of the Wizard of Oz is iconic.
The fact that she has a chalk board is such an amazing throw back to the original book.
He’s the Wizard….my favorite movie! It’s the Wizard of Oz with SOUL!

Absolutely the best Choreography and Music ever!!
I’m shocked no one ever used this in a hip hop sample
makes no sense they didnt. There are things ive mentally sampled already: This song. What would I do if I could feel, and The emerald City part

this movie has some of the best instrumentation i’ve ever heard. EVERYTHING sounds amazing.
I love this melancholy yet fun melody, the main female singers voice is so encapsulating. The goofy breaks are silly but still a cult classic
Such an underrated song omg
Ah the childhood memories coming back to me now

The only musical that I can stand.
