Today J dives into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to uncover why Dumbledore seems to trust Hagrid with such iron clad resolve in the same way he seems to trust Snape - Did Hagrid make a great confession of love? Did he save his life? Why does Hagrid’s wand still function in his umbrella if it was snapped in half?!

@@threwthelookingglass7194 what is the purple nightvale eye? Is it what the condition Grindelwald has for his eye?

One year later: R.I.P. to Michael Gambon. The headmaster of Hogwarts, brother to Aberforth, teacher to all.
Because Hagrid is as loyal as they come. He just about chokes out the headmaster of Durmstrang when he accuses Dumbledore of treachery
Who was a former death eater. Hagrid gives no f@cks🤣🤘
His name is Igor karkaroff
I mean... I wouldnt trust someone with my life if they decide to throw down with anyone at any provocation... feels like you'd be sitting there, dying, waiting for Hagrid to get help, but no, he is being hauled off to Azkaban for assaulting an Auror or something.
Well, Igor Karkaroff did used to be a Death Eater.
@@dinooo64yt23 no
I was trying to think why Hagrid needed to be the one to bring in the Christmas trees and I think I got it. He has to get the trees from the Forbidden Forrest and he’s the only one with the relationship he has with it’s residents. I’m sure like the centaurs many magical creatures don’t like wizards or humans for that matter. Hagrid probably goes in and asks which trees he can take.
Makes sense. Plus, even if he weren't allowed to take any, his giant side would protect him, and he goes where no one else dares in the forest
I like this theory! I like to add that he is probably only allowed to take 1 but then the other teachers use the gemino charm to multiply it
But can't the teachers just magically create those trees instead of bringing them from the forest?
@@bhavyajain3 no... the 5th rule of magical thermodynamics states that no biological matter can be created from nothing... obviously! Just kidding, yah probs but who knows for sure haha
@@bhavyajain3 you are most likely right. As a proud hufflepuff, I'm confident that professor spout could whip up a giant pine tree in an instant but maybe they appreciate the natural/earthly magic of a normal tree for the holiday season
I've wondered if Dumbledore secretly taught Hagrid after Hagrid was expelled.
I always thought so too.
Agree
I can definitely see Dumbledore doing that ! ❤
Possible
We know that the Elder wand fixes Harry's wand at the end, so I've always assumed Dumbledore fixed Hagrid's wand for him after Hagrid was expelled.
I just remembered something. Isn't Hagrid resistant to certain spells because he is half-giant? Maybe that's something Hagrid used to his advantage to help Dumbledore, but perhaps Hagrid almost died in the process, showing unwavering faith and loyalty to Dumbledore and bravery even against the most powerful dark wizard of the generation, despite his dark childhood. Honestly, now that I think about it, if Dumbledore saw this happening in front of him FIRST HAND, I would totally understand why he has absolute faith in Hagrid and why he'd "trust Hagrid with [his] own life."
Great addition!
also if you put * (shift+8) you'll get *his*
He *did* tank several Stupefy spells launched at him in the Order of the Phoenix book during Harry's Astronomy exam...
I wouldn't be surprised if that turns out to be true
it's possible that Hagrid is asked to "stand aside" by Grindelwald, but he refuses to do so (just like how Lily refused to stand aside from Harry for Voldemort), thereby casting some sort of love protection on him. admittedly it won't be as powerful as a mother's love for her son, but it might be one of the reasons Dumbledore is able to eventually beat Grindelwald.
@@JuanMataCFC
1. Why would Grindelwald care about Hagrid, let alone give him the option to stand aside? The guy kills babies, for crying out loud!
2. The protection is applied when to protector dies, both with Lily for Harry and Harry for Hogwarts (although he walked it off). Hagrid ain't dead.
That's more speculative but we already know the reason Dumbledore trusts. Dumbledore trusts people who have proven the ability to love unconditionally. Snape loves Lily so much that even after her death he pledged himself in defending her son whom he hated. Harry was willing to die from the age of 11 to protect those he loves and showed the same capacity each subsequent year. Hagrid loves even the most monstrous creatures despite how dangerous they are, indeed I'd argue that every friendship Hagrid makes he offers the same unconditional love. These are three people who have every reason to abandon love given their situations, but they chose not to even though doing so could kill them.
Wow that’s true. Well stated
Brb crying
Actually though you're 100% right
Dumbledore trusts people who have proven their ability of being his secret lovers.
@@emankcin1701 That escalated quickly.
As I have theorised, but not been vocal about this: Dumbledore was transfiguration teacher before he was headmaster so it is entirely possible that with the Elder Wand he repairs Hagrids wand and transforms it into the umbrella
Exactly!
Didn't Dumbledore also teach Defense against of the Dark Arts?
@@markmagician2471 only in the second fantastic beasts movie, it's questionable how canon it is
If Hagrid is already game keeper we HAVE to get a scene between him and Newt
I think albus actually taught Hagrid secretly as well as fixing his wand.thats why Hagrid stands by his friend and is the most heartbroken at his death.
Seamus Gorman, is that you?
My sister and I are believers of that same theory
If I look at it positively, it's because Hagrid is a genuinely good person even if he is not the brightest person around. If I look at it cynically, it's because Dumbledore strategically knows that Hagrid, who has always faced prejudice and discrimination due to his heritage and love for scary creatures, is eager to please Dumbledore because he took Hagrid in when he was expelled/his father passed away. Furthermore, knowing how Dumbledore is always several steps ahead of everyone, I would assume Dumbledore always takes Hagrid's carelessness into account and assigns specific jobs that is pushed into action by Hagrid's carelessness.
I think the cynical way of thinking is the right one here. It's similar to how he used Harry and to some extent Snape
Hey, why not both? He can trust that his heart is in the right place but still be aware of his limitations.
Trusting always comes with knowing the limitations of a person, for example I will trust my best friend, but I still know she will be late the next time we meet 😂 or my dog, but it will still eat any food I drop on the floor 🤣 Dumbledore definitely trusts Hagrid with his and others lifes, but still expects him to leak information to Harry
I think Hagrid was trusted *to* leak the information to Harry.
I agree. He trusts that Hagrid will put his life on the line to protect anything he was tasked with protecting. Dumbledore can’t truly be trusting Hagrid to keep a secret, though. He is too wise for that. Dumbledore May tell Hagrid that something is a secret, but surely he has every expectation that anything Hagrid knows has a good chance of leaking to Harry and friends.
Either Dumbledore secretly wants this to happen, or is at least strategically preparing for that possibility. Nobody can be fully and unconditionally trusted. Only trusted in certain areas where they are the most predictable.
To invert this, I could trust an 85 year old man in that I'd talk to him about anything and value his advice. At the same time, I would not trust that man to pull me up from a ledge. Trust is based on intention, rather than capability, and Hagrid is not mentally capable of keeping complex secrets (as proven in childhood by Tom knowing he had an acromantula).
I do think that the legendary duel between Dumbledore and Grindelwald did happen, but maybe Hagrid did something to help Dumbledore win. Took care of Fawkes or found Fawkes maybe? 🤔 who knows? but I love this theory, it'd be so awesome to see even Newt and Hagrid interact.
Which, side note, there is a theory that Newt gave Aragog to Hagrid. As Aragog explains how he came to be with Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: "I came to Hagrid from a distant land, in the pockets of a traveller." 👀
Unlikely Fawkes, seeing as it already gave the feathers for Tom Riddle's wand(and I guess Harry's, although I don't think it's mentioned when Olivender made that one).
Unless, the Phoenix in Secret of Dumbledore is Fawkes, who just tied itself to Dumbledore after the battle 🤔
Guess it could explain the "evil" and "good" feather for the wands then.. hmmm
new headcanon: Newt bought 11-year-old Hagrid a pet spider in the same way Hagrid bought 11-year-old Harry a pet owl!
2:19 i think its cuz hagrid enjoys it and they let him do it so he feels useful and doesnt feel like a burden plus it keeps him busy and distracted from telling the students about things he shouldnt say like about the philosophers stone for example
Because Dumbledore put his neck out for Hagrid when Myrtle was killed. He knew Hagrid was innocent. Dumbledore went up to bat for him in a way nobody else would at that time. This earned Hagrid's unwavering loyalty. That loyalty is what Dumbledore trusts
“Yes Hagrid was wrongly accused of murder but like… you probably shouldn’t have had that spider in there man”
J your delivery of this line was perfection 😂
Just want to add two things.
1. Items can be taken out of Hagrid's coat by people other than him as Harry does exactly that in chapter 5 of the first book.
2. Hagrid can also cast spells silently (I don't recall any instances where he recites an incantation) which makes him a supremely good wizard.
I think he uses aguamenti in HBP to extinguish the fire in his hut. But iirc Harry tells him the spell...
Hagrid tells Harry to look in his coat to pay the owl for the prophet. Its not like Harry tried to pickpocket Hagrid
Additional information that should be mentioned is that Hagrid’s wand is very long (almost like it’s the same length as the umbrella), and that Dumbledore is *very good* at transfiguration- so the umbrella isn’t that far of a stretch
His wand was 16 inches and the umbrella is roughly 24, I think you might be on to something there
Oooh yes! Cuz I always thought there was just pieces of the wand in the umbrella but then I remembered the potter more post that says long wands favor those that are really tall or short!
So it totally makes sense that the entire umbrella is the wand! Maybe the extra length is the handle!
I agree that Dumbledore probably repaired Hagrid's wand, but why does everyone assume Hagrid does not know much magic? His formal education may have ended early, but he lived at the magic school for half a century and earned the trust and friendship of the greatest wizard of the age (and headmaster of the school he was living at). He probably learned more than most, but focused more on the subjects he was interested in.
Literally just watching this video now as the news about Robbie Coltrane came through. Was not ready for that :( RIP
Love the Carlin bros their theories always cheer me up when I need them
I'm currently sick with a cold. No better cure than SCB talking about my favorite HP character.
And yet I'm so disappointed when their great theories are ruined by the incompetent folks at FBAWTFT
@@321Nox I will never disagree that those movies are a mess. I will also never stop campaigning for them to make the last two better instead of giving up like cowards.
Hagrid is the purest soul
It makes me laugh how drunk Hagrid gets, especially in front of the Golden Trio, like it's no big deal!
Just imagine... You are a thirteen year old multi species minority that looks vastly different than all of your peers. You know that everyone around you has a prejudice towards your mother and all her kind. You are not the smartest or most talented. Your closest friend is a deadly monster that you must keep in a trunk. You are then framed for a murder you did not commit. You have no chance of defense simply because of your DNA. You are expelled from your only home because at this point you are a basically and orphan. Your only saving grace is that, as a child, you've been allowed to work full time for the same school that broke your wand. You work hard, day in and day out for years and years. Still, everyone looks down on you. To most of the Wizarding World you are a joke... an incompetent servant... your only friends are magical beasts and 3 eleven year olds...
Not to mention that his half giant body probably has a powerful innate tolerance to alchohol...
Can you blame the guy?
I guess he can't stand them without a bottle of brandy.
Where are you from? In my experience getting drunk in front of children wouldn't have been a big deal in the UK at that time.
I'm English and the same age as the Golden Trio so was in the same year in the 1990s as I grew up. I actually share Ron's birthday! Anyone involved in education caught drunk in charge or responsible for kids would have been fired even then, but I'm sure they all needed a fire whisky or three! Lol!
@@carolinetheparwitch6884 hagrid wasn't responsible for the kids or education though ( in the first couple of books, he was simply the grounds keeper, and whatever the grounds keeper does out of school times is for him to decide
R. I. P., Robbie Coltrane. You will be missed, king.
The timing of his years at Hogwarts, the story of how he got Aragog, and Dumbledore's trust seem to indicate Hagrid MUST appear at some point. I think many of us assume Newt's the guy with the spider in his pocket. It's likely he's a hero, of sorts to young Hagrid and when he saw his interest in magical creatures, Dumbledore introduced him to Newt.
Moleskin is actually a textile that's fluffed on one side to make it more protective from cold winds :)
No moles were hurt in the making of that coat
we will all miss you hagrid. easily my favorite character in all of harry potter, but could never have been played by any actor better than him
One thing that I didn't realise until this video, for someone who only made it halfway through third year, Hagrid is really talented at transfiguration. Like, to be able to give pig features, given that he was already so close to a pig, is some serious aptitude. We're told in OOtP than the more "sentient" the creature, the more difficult the transfiguration is. The only explanation is that Dumbledore was giving Hagrid Transfiguration lessons on the side post-expulsion.
My headcanon is that Hagrid just really enjoys his work as groundskeeper, he enjoys working outside and using his hands. So he would be annoyed if one of the teachers tried using magic to move the Christmas trees for him. He likes being useful
I think that Dumbledore was also teaching Hagrid after he fix his wand.
Right, there was definitely more learning that happened. All of Hagrid's spells are cast non-verbally, something we see the 6th years struggling with in Half Blood Prince.
@@13vatra wait, did Dumbledore make Hagrid into a spy?
I would trust Hagrid with my life. He’s the most loyal and honorable character in the game.
My life, yes. My secrets? Yeah no 😉
rest in peace robbie. there is no hogwarts without hagrid.
Robbie Coltrane RIP.
He really brought the wonderful character of Hagrid to life
I love all the Harry Potter content lately. My favourite kind of content.
I think the reason Snape didn't want anyone to know about his motives is simply because he was a double agent and felt like he couldn't fully trust anyone but Dumbledore. He had to make people on both side question his loyalty and reasons so they would believe he was in their side. Plus people generally believe others will behave as they would, such as a liar thinks everyone is always lying, and so Snape could imagine what others would do with that info would be the exact things he would do
Hagrid is honestly one of my favorite characters (along with Luna and Dobby and of course The Golden Trio)
Dobby deserved it :p
So, Hagrid only got up to Third Year, but when he gives Dudley his tail, and speeds up the boat, he does both spells non-verbally. How? (I suspect that Dumbledore might have been teaching Hagrid a few spells here and there, or maybe, once his wand was repaired, he tried to teach himself.
What if Hagrids wand wasn't repaired, but instead, Dumbledore entrusted his old wand to him, and they consealed it in the umbrella so nobody would know
In the books, Harry goes through Hagrid's coat to give the daily prophet owl his money.. wouldn't that be impossible if Hagrid’s coat was of Mokeskin?
Aye
Why would that be impossible?
@@swanqueen because Mokeskin prevents any but the owner from taking from it. The pouch Harry wears on his neck in Deathly Hallows is made of the stuff

RIP Mr. Coltrane you will be missed
Hagrid, in terms of virtue, was a Percival level knight in addition to being a “tank”.
Even if Hagrid doesn't help Dumbledore win (which I REALLY hope he does, it'd be such a miss opportunity to not include him in these new movies!), I think Dumbledore would've still repaired his wand ASAP. Dumbledore is such a good judge of character, he knew Tom Riddle was BSing way before anyone else did and believed in Hagrid's innocence when no one else did. So I think he'd definitely repair it, as he knows that Hagrid is a good and genuine person through and through.
I always thought it was because Hagrid told the truth when they believed he opened the chamber of secrets
wh- who wouldn't? "We think you murdered this girl" "Yeah lol that was me (totally innocent)"
@blak4831 I think they mean "yeah I was raising a homicidal monster inside the castle but a different monster killed her, honest!"
You probably don't address this in the theory - but how was Hagrid supposed to bring Harry to the Dursley's on that kind of schedule if he hadn't just *happened* to run into Sirius Black who loaned him his motorcycle? There's no way Dumbledore could have predicted that (remember later he thought Sirius was guilty too), and Dumbledore shows up just before Hagrid does. Whereas if Hagrid had had to do it by foot, it would have taken *much* longer.
I’m always waiting for SCB to post a new video you are the best ! And everyone at SCB is the best ! Keep up the fantastic work ladies and gentlemen!
Gotta trust someone so nice and fiscally responsible!
Perfection
I am positive that Dumbledore mended Hagrid's wand and illegally tutored him at some point, getting him up to speed. He can cast spells silently, after all. That's 6th year stuff.
Hagrid has had 50 years to learn it, so maybe he taught himself, but it seems unlikely.
RIP Robbie Coltrane
RIP Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid’s Actor)
Rest in Peace Robbie Coltrane. Our hearts are broken it feels like we all lost a close friend.
Hagrid is the sort to give his life for someone without hesitation. We see this time and again. He willingly surrenders to the ministry in CoS, he could have floored Fudge and Malfoy without breaking a sweat. Goblet has him defending Dumblore and acting as an aid wizard during the tournament. In book Five he stays for the students and Grawp. Year 6, he grabs Katie when, for all anyone knew, the xurse could have passed to him. Year 7 we see him in the battle where he not only tries to defend students, but the spiders as well.
Imagine if Hagrid had been there when Lupin went moony in book 3. He could have single-handedly stopped lupin’s rampage.
You didn't even mention that one of the first things Dumbledore says about Hagrid is that he "would trust him with [his] life". Perhaps Dumbledore trusts Hagrid with his life because Hagrid saved his life?
1:49
To be fair, it wasn't until he was retroactively exonerated of the Chamber of Secrets thing that he got it. This leads me to believe that one of the few regulations placed on a headmaster's discretion to hire teachers is that they have to have a clean criminal record.
RIP big guy, we will always love you! Robbie
Wow after more than 20 years when I was a child and read Harry Potter and I still find things about it, amazing that totally makes sense that is how hagrid's wand works
I think it's just because Dumbledore can see Hagrid's true character and allegiances. Hagrid isn't going to be one well versed in anything like legilimency so he would be like an open book and he is simply a true nice, gentle soul. Sure he may make mistakes (unless Dumbledore told him to do those things in his big plan) but he never does them maliciously.
As for Dumbledore beating the elder wand, I don't think it's actually unbeatable. It simply makes the spells they already know and use more powerful and Dumbledore being a shade more skilled makes the difference. I also feel like by the time they duel grindelwald is probably slightly insane and unhinged making him more powerful yes, but also widening that skill gap further.
I think it would be great to see what Hagrid would've done had he graduated from Hogwarts. I mean I am pretty sure he would follow in the footsteps of someone like Newt but, all the same it'd be cool.
Ooh, I like this. Could maybe be their next what if serie.

I know this isn't at all related to this video, but the Snape quote got me thinking and I wanted to share a query with you: how much more impactful would Snape's death have been to everyone if while he's dying, looking into Harry....Lily's eyes.... he says to Harry. "You have her eyes....Lily's eyes....those are always what I loved most about her..." then dies without any further dialog. Ik, it goes against his character to reveal it to Harry like this, but I feel it would have been so intense( and confusing to use as readers at that time of the book) to hear those as his death words.
Rest in peace Robbie
hear hear R.I.P. Robbie Coltrane
It’d be awesome if hagrid turns on grindlevalt and dumbledore doesn’t understand why but hagrid simply turns to him and goes “It may not be easy, but I did what was right” without them ever having spoken before
I always kind of figured Dumbledore repaired Hagrid’s wand, then transfigured it into the umbrella to avoid suspicion.
RIP Robbie Coltrane😭
To add to your point about Hagrids magic ability he performs all his spells non verbally something that Harry doesn’t learn until Snape teaches him in his final year at hogwarts I suspect that hagrid was also given secret lessons
As for giving Hagrid the Potter’s vault key & his own, Hagrid is clearly quite good at handling money so I imagine that was an easy choice.
12:08 AND all non-verbally which is a sign of very skilled wizard.
It's funny that Hagrid bred Blast ended screwts making him just like Salazar Slytherin when he made the basilisk.
J, you are so entertaining! And insightful. That was so funny when you pieced together all the times Hagrid was saying,
"I shouldn't have told you that..." Where else can we find such fast paced humor and intelligence at the same time? Thank you so much.
Speaking of Hagrid, I really like that, almost all character dismiss Hagrid(as being dumb or whatever), except for his Dumbledore, the Harry gang, and the other Care of Magical Beast teachers.
He might have weird taste in creature, but he knows his stuff.
Dumbledore: He may be clumsy (pouring scorching water on Dumbledore by accident), leak information (I had an affair with Bob Odgen) and get wasted in the presence of kids, but he has earned my utter and undisputed trust.
It would make me SO happy to see a young Hagrid in the FBAWTFT movies. If they could find a young person similar to Andre the Giant, who could moderately act, that would be wonderful.
This video aside I always figured it was because hagrid was like Dumbledore without the list for power that lead to the elderwand...
Every Swagrid reference in any of your videos always makes me happy. Can never get enough of #SWAGRID!
I LOVE the humour in the Hagrid videos. Absolutely on point 👌
Watching this and found out R.C. died today. R.I.P. Hagrid.
I bet he repairs it and transmogrifies it into the pink umbrella to help hagrid hide it and as kind of a cute joke.
I was so used to the room being dark because of the Harry in Slytherin series that I had to do a double take when I saw it
I was always surprised that Dipped( Hope I spell it in right way), the headmaster when Hagrid was expelled did not know that those victims surely could not die from any creature that Hagrid had "access" to.I mean in the books it is clearly said that Bassilisk kill in "his own way", right? 🤔
I wonder if he was prejudice against giants and used it as an excuse to expel Hagrid?
Glad to have found this channel! I enjoy your content and the quiz's are simply fabulous! I have no idea why Dumbeldore trusts hagrid, i just know he does I do not "get" a lot of what goes on in JK's worlds but I guess if I read more Pottormore and similar online info I might? I mush say that the best stories I have ever read have had all of the world building info contained within the pages of the books. Perhaps that is what is so captivating about Harry Potter and all of the mediums it is translated into? I just gotta say keep those videos rolling Boys!
7:03 can't be, in the philosopher's stone hagrid told harry to take some money from one of his coat pockets to pay the owl
This doesn't entirely add up though because in Goblet of Fire Molly Weasley says that the Groundskeeper at Hogwarts in her time was some guy named Ogg (I think??, something along those lines anyway) and that would have been like the late 60's to early 70's so clearly Hagrid didn't slot straight into that role.
I have no doubt that he definitely helped Dumbledore massively after being expelled and may have even saved his life.
NICE! Right when I was going to look up an old video, you guys upload a new video! :D
paused the video to type this lol
I am kinda amazed that your still going strong after all this time! I get it I am new here and have a lot to catch up with, Yet your still creating new Harry Potter content and your numbers still look pretty darn good to me! Well I do hope your channel is doing well and that all is fine here abouts . . . ? You boys enjoy your day.
I think the more important question we need to examine is: where the blazes did Hagrid store a fire crab and a manticore? The latter of those is deadly as heck!
RIP Robbie Coltrane.
Hagrid's coat can't be made of mokesin because in the first book Harry takes all sorts of things out of it trying to find money to use to pay for the Daily Prophet. But that could have been a cool one so, props for that.❤
I don't think that his coat is made out of mokeskin. In Sorcerer's Stone when the owl delivers the paper Hagrid tells him to get some knuts out of his coat pocket and harry goes through several pockets before he gets the knuts to pay the oil with
Carlin bros are legendary love your work guys
Loving all the recent HP videos!!
5:22 this manticore picture is from the DND monster manual
I wonder if Hagrid ever had many student-friends (and I do call the trio his friends, not students) during his decades at the school, and if not, it would explain why he had so few skills on what to say (or specifically NOT to say) in front of them. Imean, there are worse things to mention in front of kids than stuff about MORTAL PERIL, ammmiright? I will answer no followfollowup questions. KIDS! Sheesh.
I haven’t even watched this video yet.. but i have waited for this for YEARS!!!!
I think the most important question is Will we get to find out? I think the answer would be yes. I think if Warner decides not to make the other two movies that JK will write them as books. Which is probably what she should have done to begin with then if they were popular enough turn them into movies.
I do like the 'Dumbledore repairs the wand' idea, but I admit my original thought was Hagrid repaired it himself. I know the first thought is 'Hagrid wouldn't be educated enough to know wandcrafting', but he's literally surrounded with expensive magical ingredients on the daily, and his his high rapport with animals. He might have managed a crude repair or recrafting of his wand. Enough that it's sufficient for the simple charms one uses daily.
BUT, I like the idea of the Dumbledore fix
My big question regarding Hagrid is, given his name being cleared after Changer of Secrets, why don't we hear anything or see him essentially being granted true pardon. Also, he should be granted the ability to resume magical training, right, seeing as his grounds for expulsion were a frame job..?
"I shouldn't have said that" - Hagrid.
Yeah
I have always thought about this, thanks!
