I honestly never thought I’d ever see a Daiwa 7000C converted to PUM. I’m fairly certain that Daiwa actually manufactured a PUM 7000C but I’ve never seen one. I don’t think it was marketed in the USA. This reel model was one of the first two surf reels I ever had back in the 1970s along with a Penn 706Z PUM reel. I now own four of these 7000C silver series reels so you know I like them a lot. That’s why I have some extra handles. Rick, my worry about converting this to manual line pickup was how to make the pickup arm rigid. You solved that issue so I’m expecting this to work fine when you fish with it. I’m very traditional so I like the reel being silver. I could see it looking very nice as being black or dark gray but please don’t paint it red. I have a Daiwa RG 4000 saltwater reel that is black that looks stunning. It is basically the same reel as a 4000C which is slightly smaller than the 7000C. I’d love to see you try this with the huge 9000C but those reels are way too valuable as they are to ever mess with. I have 3 of those bad boys. They are awesome surf reels but I still like the 7000C the most. You mentioned Dennis on 2nd Chance Tackle. This 7000C is one of his favorite reels. He loves to bother some of his fellow fishing friends by using his 7000C with its very loud anti-reverse clicker when fishing around them. LOL. - Chris

These are great old reels still going strong, I just serviced them. I have the 4000C, 7000C, also a 7000X with the internal bail release, not the bump type. I think I bought these in the early to mid 80's for fishing down here at the Outer Banks.

I’ve been to the Outer Banks a few times but never got to fish there. I did pier fish that area once about forty years ago but I have no idea where it was, At that time all I could afford was a cheap K-mart combo set. I did a video on the reel from that set.
It was a Abu Garcia Cardinal reel. Not in the same ball park as the Daiwa 7000c. I hope your reels continue to give you great service. They are great work-horses if taken care of.

I for one would be interested in seeing you prep and repaint a reel.

Barney, I’m going on vacation tomorrow so I’ll won’t be doing any videos for a while. I’ll have to keep that in mind. You probably won’t see any of the actual media blasting or painting because I’m afraid of ruining my camera. I’ll have to give that some thought.

Would it not have been better to clean the bearings in non residue solvent before infusing with new oil for a completely fresh restart? What kind of grease do you use? I bought a 7000C used on ebay today and expect it here in a few days. Hoping to catch some Stripers on Long Island this season! Been a LONG time. Like when the 7000C was popular long! Decided to restart with a reasonable, used ROCK SOLID entry cost and when I'm Hooked, then I'll go for a Slammer IV 6500. Or maybe I'll just keep at it with my 7000C? Nothing like FRESH fish on the table! Thanks for the detailed instructional! Will be VERY useful real soon!

Yes, it would be better to clean the bearings in non residue solvent prior to using the new oil. Is it necessary? Not really in most cases. If the bearing is spinning smoothly and the bearing is reasonably clean, I won’t bother cleaning all of the old oil out before re-oiling. I try to do repairs that are simple enough that almost anyone can accomplish. If they wish to go beyond a basic service and lubrication, they are more than welcome to. As for grease, these days in my videos I use Super Lube because it’s easy to see what I’m doing. In my none video repairs, I use Penn Reel Grease and Cal’s. Good luck with the Stripers. I’m glad you are heading back out fishing again. Thanks for the input.

@@youngmartinsreels5314 All I can say is I would never assume this 45 to 50 year old reel was ever serviced properly. And even if not scratchy or noisy when not under stress, I would NEVER rely on 45 to 50 year old oil to a big runner that could torture what's left in there. And yup! I'm an overkill perfectionist! LOL But if a big fish is going to kill my old reel, it will never be because I didn't address everything to be the best it can be. For another 45 to 50 years!. Thanks for the real life Grease recommendations. I'd send you some Striper but now 28" to 31" means 7 pounders. We're going to starve to death! They try to pacify us with "The Smaller Ones Taste Better". RIGHT! Keep your hooks and lures WET!
