In this double DVD lesson (www.guitarvide..., Ernie Hawkins teaches in detail nine of Rev. Gary Davis's best known blues arrangements. These songs have become well known through the playing of Bob Dylan (Baby, Let Me Lay It On You), Jackson Browne (Cocaine Blues), Hot Tuna (Hesitation Blues) John Renbourn, Stefan Grossman, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Hot Tuna and a host of other musicians (Candyman).
Rev. Davis approached playing the blues in several different styles. Each had unique characteristics and ranged from what he called "old fashion picking" to complex playing that explored and extended the blues tradition on the fingerboard.
Each arrangement is broken down phrase by phrase and then played slowly on a split screen. You can easily follow the playing with the tab/music included as a PDF file on each DVD. As a bonus we have included various audio performances of Rev. Davis playing each song.
Disc One: Spoonful, Cocaine Blues, Delia, Baby Let Me Lay It On You and Candyman
Disc Two: Hesitation Blues, Penitentiary Blues, Florida Blues and Can't Be Satisfied
"...and right now I'm going to try to teach this as best I can", he said. Ernie, your 7 minute explanation was flawless!
I've learned a lot from these short videos, Ernie must be one of the best tutors of folk blues guitar, love it, thanks Ernie!
I like that he picks with just thumb and 1st finger same as the Rev.🙂
I loved this by 'Hot Tuna', half a century ago.
Nothing's changed with this delicate version.
Beautiful!
and he's playing on a jumbo gibson? love it. A masterpiece by Rev Gary Davis. Well Done! You killed it!
Real authentic playing.. I love it 👏🏼
best lesson yet on this song and thanks
Very nice guitar, good version
Damn. This guy can play!
Nice work Ernie
Damn, i wish i could play like that!!!
I'm finally getting to where I can use a thumb pick. I sanded down the Dunlop medium so only 1/4" sticks out. But, I see that you have the thumb pick up farther.
I did this too, it was the only way I could stop tripping on the bass strings.
Excellent
This. Dude.
I noticed how far up on your thumb you have your pick never tried that. Good picking
The Rev wore the thumb pick that way too. Ernie is the closest there is to the real thing.
@@1950s_Guitaramazing and he makes it look simple.
He was hesitating a bit...
