Roy Keane left Manchester United after criticising his teammates for a 4-1 defeat to Middlesbrough in 2005. Sir Alex Ferguson said he had no choice but to let him go, otherwise he would've lost control and be viewed differently by his players.

Let’s all be honest Keane would not have been let go of if he was 28 years old.
Doesnt matter if you're 18 or 28. If you think you're some demi god in the changing room, i got no room for you.
No doubt Keane was the type of character you need in pitbull matches.
But once SAF saw that Keane was chewing off his own puppies, you know you got to let the beast (keane) go.
If only Keane knew the line, he could have stayed in ManU for a couple more years.
Alas, man forget humility and mercy towards others sometimes.
Kudos to SAF to let Keane go. It was the right choice.
@@trafficmonsoonacademy562 Keane was the driving force in that team, short of shooting someone he'd not be touched if he was a few years younger. Without Keane that dominance around the turn of the century doesn't happen, he was untouchable.
Absolutely correct.
@@trafficmonsoonacademy562 yes i agree roy keane was wrong for what he did. And the irony is Roy keane was unhappy with fergie criticising certain united players in his autobiography yet he felt it was okay to do that himself on mutv. Double standards
At the end of the day, I dont think Fergie has anything personal against him, he definitely respects him and if i were roy id honestly just forgive the man. he had the privilege to represent man utd for 12 years and also serve them as a captain, he was 34 anyway so he was coming towards the end of his career. But deep down even Roy has a big ego for someone who came across as very humble and modest.
@@trafficmonsoonacademy562 you probably love pogba and have no problem with what he did witch is 1k times worse than being the captain of the club and criticising lazy players.
Fergie and Keane relationship was like that of Father and Eldest Son of the family, who never got along well although they had similar thought process and knew what was the best for the family ( team). These two have to be best captain/manager duo of all time.
Nah not the best manager/captain duo of all time.

Hats of to Keane for showing his true heart. There's a saying: A genuine man's pride won't let him do things to make you think his right. And Roy proved that by standing up to the Alpha in the pack, that's how passionate he was. So they had to let him go. He should've become United Manager then already.

SuperDangerousMouse in the background of this video you see SAF’s autobiography written on the wall. Clearly a presser for his book. Which Keane had an issue with. The lads who played with Roy all talk with great reverence for him. That says alot.
Of course they do. Hes a United Legend. However his temper let him down this time and also in World Cup (Saipan). "If I had have let it pass I think the players would have viewed me differently". This is the most important part of being a manager in any circumstance. You need to be able to control how you're viewed as it intrinsically links to how you want the team under you to perform. It's why Poch fell apart at Spurs and why Wenger fell apart at Arsenal and why Mourinho falls short after a few seasons at any club. They lose control of their persona.
Yep, that's why he retained control.
Any player gets to big, get.rid.
That’s a great point. That’s why the best managers (and people in general) do well not to put on or contrive a persona. To be genuine and authentic always wins. A good peoples person will know that to truly connect with someone, you can’t be disingenuous
I have to agree with you on that…l’m a Liverpool fan…but I have to admit that Ferguson had mastered the art of mind games, knowing how to handle players..and then knowing when the time was right in getting rid of them…those were the reasons why Manchester United were so dominant and so successful under fergie in the 1990s and 2000s
Poch fell apart at Spurs because he’d had the best years out of most of his players & the squad was on the decline en-masse due to age…literally his cult like status at the club stopped him getting sacked much sooner, he hadn’t won an away match for a year, a YEAR!
I legit just came here to hear Sir Alex.
We miss you so much boss!!
Roy Keane is a tortured soul,he's running the game against Juventus Champions League semi one minute then walking out on his National team the next,a force of nature in both directions but undoubtedly the most talented captain the Prempership has/will ever witness
when a player thinks he’s bigger than the club it’s time to go. Roy keane or phillis jones makes no difference .
Beckham is a prime example aswell
Then what about Paul Pogba? He clearly thinks he's too big for the club.

I am always amazed how they were able to work well together for that many years. Two head strong minds that were eventually going to butt heads in the end. it sadly came to an end during the MUTV interview. If you are going to call out someone you do in private or in the locker room with your teammates there. Sir Alex had to squash this because it would have done a whole bunch of damage in the locker room. In the end, Sir Alex decision was right and look what happened the next year, United went onto win 3 straight Premier League titles along with a Champions League title to match.
Mad
Year of the Pig. Year of the Snake. Mortal Enemies.
I agree. As much as I like Keane, Fergie was backed into a corner. I think that incident on Man U TV was the last straw. There was a rift between the two for months on end. Around that time, untied was under performing, as they were going through a rebuilding process to compete with league champions Chelsea and Keane the outspoken Irishman was airing his frustrations out at everyone including Fergie. If Fergie had kept him at the club, there was a good chance he could've organized a coup to remove Fergie from the club, and take the hot seat as he was approaching the end of his career and considering management. It probably would not have happened, but Keane did have a tighter grip on the dressing room than Fergie, he was ruthless, hot headed, temperamental, extremely aggressive, held grudges and highly driven. I'm glad he's managed to mellow a lot in his old age and hopefully, they'll manage to let bygones be bygones, and reflect on their careers together.
Sir Alex was right in so many ways. He didn't only know the beautiful game so well but he also was a master at psychology with how in treating the players.
Yet I would say that at the very top of what made his greatness.
Was him knowing that he needed to have the biggest ego at the club (in a healthy, winning way) and if a super star like Beckham, Rudd, Keane who ever crossed the line. Bye bye. Respect. So when you have the God father tapping you on the shoulder after a game and saying good job today. It means the world!
Sure if they were younger, they still would of been punished and maybe kept, maybe not. But his old school teachings and basically tough love worked.
The world needs it right now.
Beckham just wanted to be famous…with Keane and Van Nistleroy though it was a gradual breakdown in their relationships with the gaffer. Both were his top guys and were slowly being shelved to make room for new players and it began to affect them emotionally

Loved Keane but agree with a genius who is SAF. Player power is destroying the game and I loved this management style, and I’m a Liverpool fan. Both titans of the game and both should be respected for not backing down.
Keane criticised players from the day he joined United that's what helped make them so successful they raised their game to another level because of the tongue lashing he would give them if they didn't.Fergie wanted him out because Keane had criticised him while at United over his involvement in a legal case involving the rock of Gibraltar horse and the ramifications it would bring down on the club ,also he had a bust up with Ferguson and Carlos Queriroz at a pre season training camp .TBH his cards were marked after all that I'd say there was pressure on fergie from the board to show him the door.
Exactly
Well said. Keane thought it was a bad idea starting beef with John magnier and jp McManus.. Fergie thought he was getting above his station and beat him down the best way he knew how.. the comments Keane made were he supposedly criticized his team mates was only an excuse.
What is the rock of Gibraltar horse? And I can't remember Keane bringing this up
How many managers wish that they had a football team and subs with the commitment of Roy Keane…
Keane completely perosnfiies what Fergie wanted from a player. I think their relationship always hung in the balance. If you listen to Keane now, he always talks about what is needed to be a "Man Utd" player. He knows the club inside out because he was mentored to bleed Utd.
He says he got rid of him cause keane slated his teammates when in alexs book her criticises all his former players who won him so much 👀
Difference is Keane was still playing and Fergie was still the manager at that time? So it actually make an impact on peformance and respect etc.
Its not the same thing if Ferguson has knocked his old players, its the result it would of had, on how the rest of the players would have viewed him, if he let it go unanswered. As regards the MUTV interview, Ferguson's rule was that at Man Utd you don't criticise another Man U player in public. It was all done behind closed doors. Keane himself had benefitted from this when Fergie defended him publicly for his various scrapes such as being arrested for assault, the Haaland tackle, being kicked out the world cup. But Keane blatantly disobeyed Fergie's rule by criticising his teammates in a public broadcast. The fact the players were fine with it was irrelevant. Fergie was the gaffer and he felt it was unacceptable. But Keane still wouldn't accept Fergie's authority, and they ended up in a huge row. Fergie showed him who was boss by getting of him 2 weeks later and there was nothing Keane could do about it. His ego was severely bruised and that's why he's still bitter nearly 20 years later.
Saipan has a lot of similarities. Keane gave a newspaper interview slaughtering the FAI, Mick McCarthy and the other players. There was no benefit to doing this during the tournament and it was bound to damage team morale. Keane should've waited until after the tournament to air those grievances but once again he felt he could behave how he wanted being Ireland captain. McCarthy had every right to challenge Keane for the newspaper article, and then send him home when Keane became abusive.
No one player is bigger than the team and that included Roy Keane regardless of his contribution.
@@mikeypc3592 this is mostly garbage from you all the united players have said the interview was fine it was probably similar to his criticism of maguire on sky
Rooney has come out since and said that roy was completely right. He could do and say what he wanted and fergie would not care he had a go after a bayern Munich game when united got knocked out of champion league and gnev said that was probably worse
Keane was a madman but when his performance on the pitch weren't the same when he was 29 the mutv never went out if it was so bad why not just not show Roy's interview and get someone else to do it
It was bad blood between quiros fergie and roy and there was only 1 winner cause fergies the manager look at jaap stam fergie got rid of him for no reason just used the book as a excuse when he had noticed jaap injury and thought he lost a yard of pace the book was a patsy
Also roy should have played at the world cup he was driving standards no pitch mo balls no equipment for a world cup that's disgracefull he had every right to complain he was the captain players where getting injured on the rock hard pitch it was probably partly the fai responsibility for that but yes he should of soldiered on but he still had every right to complain about the kip that was saipan
If the video wasn’t released.. how did it end up with 2 of the young players being booed? When nobody seen the video?
They both made each other great! A shame it ended how it did. Neither would of been as successful without each other.
Ferguson was successful before and after Keane
The reason Sir Alex was so successful was that no player was more important to the club than he was .... GOAT
Well, except for Darren Ferguson.
There are very few players by far and between theses days that carry a set of balls like Keane, right or wrong the man battled
And he was more wrong and it shows it.
In those islands a you tend to be overimpressed by agonism. Keane was a good footballer but no more than that. A great fighter but merely a good footballer.
Great manager ! Nobody bigger than the team or manager
Only Eric cantona. 👊👊👊👊👊
English subtitle would be nice
I really wish they could've ended it on a good note
In an ideal world it would have been great to see but given that these two were a mirror image of one another, it was always going to end this way. The fact we got 12.5 years out of this duo together is something to savour!
@@SATULAL bro how sir alex and keane is different? They both got elite mentality right?
Stam. Rooney. Beckham. Keane. He had his run ins alright. But no player is bigger than the club and the gaffer is the gaffer.
Best manager in Manchester United.Always the best
Glory, glory SIR ALEX FERGUSON
Keane was a magnificent player and Captain, but Fergie made the right call on this one. A really difficult decision but top leadership from the great man.
Ferguson handled it poorly… the decision to let Keane go is an entirely reasonable decision based on any number of factors… the MANNER in which Ferguson carried out that decision showed mean-spiritedness and a personal motive above all else… it is the cause of many players from that era beginning to qualify their respect for Ferguson rather than unabashed, unqualified loyalty - they did not appreciate the way Keane was treated after all he had given for the team and it made them realise they were nothing more than commodities to Ferguson…🤷♂️
@@BuzzLightyear9999 Ferguson was very cold blooded when he needed to be.
I think both are to blame
He was the captain, he should criticise the team when they’re playing bad
@@shashvatsingh5102don't know why fergie reacted like that Roy did worse things in his career than that
Until then I always thought they were like Don Revie and Billy Bremner. Inseparable.
Still haven't seen that MUTV interview.
Because you laugh to see what he actually said n wonder how did that lead to such a public firing of the club captain.
Even though I am from Austria
I think my English is quite good
But when Alex Ferguson speaks
I am not able to understand anything
Why is that?
Because he's Scottish, and that particular accent is very difficult to follow if you're not from the British Isles.
Tony Bates add scoured accent to the that plus anything north.
Fergie didn't know how to retire him. He should have just been open and honest and this drama BS after wouldn't have happened. There wasn't even much to that video according to Keane.
According to Keane...
Sir I salute you for let me saw real deal football.
One thing is the players Keane slated won the European Cup 3 years later. Keane at that point in 2005 was not the player he was and maybe just maybe that did affect his comments and with hindsight which is such a beautiful thing Keane was wrong.
That's the problem with Keane. I would honestly say he is the best captain ever in premier league. But he thought he could do and say anything he wanted on and off the pitch without consequences!
He could but not when he got old
Ferguson's managerial style was all about control. Top to bottom. As soon as he felt he didn't have control of a player, they were on their way out. Just like Beckham.
It's better for a leader to be feared than to be loved -- Machiavelli in Il Principe
Whether it came intuitive to him or not, no one knew this better than Alex Ferguson.
I believe Keane. I think we can be too quick to run to Ferguson's defence. What did he expect from Keane when he knew his character? A character that personified Ferguson on the pitch.
It was the type of player Utd had at the time, heck you use foul language now and you're likely to have someone break down
Ferguson says where the line is keane crossed it got booted
Great manager but it doesn't mean he got everything right. Keane wasn't the only one who was treated shabbily.
Beckham and Stam suffered similarly. Ferguson's ego was not always a good thing for the club.
The No ego coaches destroy ManU as you see today
Ferguson always replaced them and was still successful
Ferguson was winning stuff right up until he left Utd. I don't like him very much but he's a winner.
The manager loses in these type of situations today. Jose Mourinho at Man Utd being the prime example. But to add to that I felt the right choice was made anyway but it would have ended the same way even if it wasn't the right decision.
Wayne Rooney has said multiple times that he wasn’t taking sides but that Roy didn’t say anything that bad or that wasn’t said before by Roy or Fergie himself. Fletcher said he had no problem with Roy and he was one of the players criticised. Seems like Fergie was lying again and being hypocritical again. Fergie has also said he never tapped up players before signing them but Stam was sent away after revealing that he did in his book. He turned on Rudd & Rooney after they alluded to it. Keane also said that Fergie tapped him up. Fantastic achievements as domestic league manager for Utd but got it wrong in Europe most of the time when it mattered due to his ego more than anything else.
Keane himself said that players should be moved on once they were no longer of the standard that Manchester United required. Unfortunately that was the situation for him and yet he wasn't so happy then!
Roy Keane is never happy. He gets Dru k and punches ladies in bars. Let's not idolize an over paided narcaccistic boy because he did a hard day's work.
I believe Roy’s version of events especially when he didn’t fall out with any of his team mates . Be a man Ferguson and be straight and honest
Apart from Brian clough, Alex Ferguson, mick McCarthy, Jack Charlton, his Irish teammates 2x the Aston Villa team, his ghost writer, Niall Quinn, the Irish team apart from that he hasn’t really fallen out with anyone
@@barrymckenna8547 i'm refering to his united team mates over that incident. nothing else
true, only a fool would believe Fergie's version
I believe Fergie was annoyed at being criticised by Keane over the horse. At that point it was only a question of how and when they could get rid of him.
Hearing from Keane on that off the ball podcast with gary neville it's interesting to see the other side, like when Keane says they put a statement in front saying thank you for your 10 and half years service when it was actually 11 and a half and h things previous with I'm looking for any senior players excluding Keane who was captain of the club, Keane was getting on fergie knew he had to move him on and this video of a 4-1 defeat to Middlesbrough was just the excuse
sky sports retro the gift that keeps on giving.
How dare Roy critising his teammates after getting destroyed 🤣 have a day off Fergie will you
It's a nonsense! Can't believe so many Fergie bootlickers try to defend him over this.
