    Recently bought the Ruger American Hunter 6.5 with the grey stock. I love it! This thing is a tack driver! I topped it off with a Vortex 4-16x44 Viper HS LR and it is perfect for it.

      Good to hear Kyle! Just ordered the Ruger American Hunter in 6.5 with the desert tan stock. 22 inch heavy barrel with the ruger muzzle break. It’ll be topped with an Athlon Helos BTR 6-24x50 with IR MIL. Have a Texas hog trip all set up next winter so I’m dying to get it to the range once it comes in next week and get it zeroed on some steel.

      It's rapture go to glass. No...it's not a $5k S&B but the SS 10x42mm is indeed a hard core mil spec unit (still seeing use in the middle east) that has decent glass, 100% accurate tracking turrets at a ridiculous affordable price.

    My Ruger American Predator in 6.5 CR shot about 2MOA out of the box. Added muzzle brake, 30MOA scope mount for long range shooting but was still about 1.5 MOA. Then put the Magpul stock on and suddenly I had a rifle that shoots .75 MOA and occasionally I get a .5 MOA group. I love this rifle. Even with all the additional purchases to get it to run good, it's still a very affordable rifle.

    You are exactly right. I have nothing against the guys who can afford 5k or 10k for a gun, that's just out of my budget. I am not saying that my first Creedmoor w/Vortex Scope (for $349), and on it's first hunt dropped an 8 pt @243 yds, is better than yours. I am just saying don't be mad at my budget. I also have the Ruger 6.5 GoWild (cause it was purrtty), lol... 4 groupings of three, all touching....No one is saying it's the greatest round or gun ever, but, you also can't deny the results.

    Hey BL
    Great video. A big reason leading me to get the Ruger American Hunter .308 as my first hunting rifle. I did have a question tho if you can help me out. I'm contemplating between buying the American Hunter as-is from my dealer for around $800. And the other option is doing a build, buying a Ruger predator (~450) then buying a magpul stock (~250).. From my understanding and research the gun itself barrel/receiver is all the same. The only difference i'm seeing is the Ruger break the Hunter comes with. Do you know what i'm missing in the two compersions or options? seems like a no brainer pricewise, but not seeing much info about people building from base vs buying the Hunter (most videos are out dated pre-Hunter release from Ruger)

    • @brockedandloaded6034
      @brockedandloaded6034  3 роки тому

      I'm not 100% on this, but on the Facebook group for Ruger Amemrican rifles it seems like they are quite the same. The hunter actually has a slightly thicker barrel if I remember correctly, and it's shorter also, right? I was thinking the predator was 22" and the hunter was 18/20".
      Personally, it depends on what you want it for. If you're going 308, you may not see the accuracy I'm seeing in the 6.5. For some reason, 6.5 rifles tend to be more accurate out of the box than 308s do. Not to say either are bad, I'd bet money you'll get 3/4 MOA out of a factory 6.5 nine out of ten times. I can't make that bet with a 308. But if it's for hunting, and not shooting extreme long range, it won't matter. Run strelok or a ballistics app and determine the velocity you'll gain/lose between the two models if the barrels are different lengths, and ask if that is going to make a difference in the woods. Its always a tradeoff isn't it? Weight for speed? For the most part anyway

    • @sn0zk1415
      @sn0zk1415 3 роки тому

      @@brockedandloaded6034 my thinking is to just have this one rifle for all my hunting needs. probably wont shoot out more than 300yrd, so the .308 will just do the job. So factoring that in.. is there a benefit to a larger diameter barrel?

    • @brockedandloaded6034
      @brockedandloaded6034  3 роки тому

      Won't get hot and string shots as fast. But thats not an issue if it's mainly a hunting rifle. For extended target shooting it may matter. Thicker is better

    At 6:10 you said you had 750-800 rounds through the barrel. Because most 6.5 ammo comes in a 20 round box we will split the difference and say 740-760. At today's prices the average price for non-reloaded ammo (that I have seen locally here in Indiana) is priced from $40-$65 a box depending on brand. So we will use the average of $55 which is the most common price I have seen locally. As of March 2021 to shoot 740 rounds it is $2035 and for 760 rounds it is $2145. That's only if you can get your hands on any ammo. I only got my 6.5 last year during the pandemic because a buddy was freaking out and needed money. I love my Ruger American 6.5 but damn is the ammo expensive. (and damn was I bored to do all that math) :)

If you have truly shot 1500 rounds (500 groups?) and never shot over MOA, that would be truly rare indeed, especially with no point of impact change. A lot of people would love to see that. Its very helpful when trying to make a decision on a hunting rifle. Just show us 10 consecutive groups (10 cold bore shots), and overlap them so you have one big group that takes into account any point of impact shift.

      @elkhuntr2816 first, sorry if that came across the wrong way. Caught me at a bad time. I totally understand the internet sub moa claims people make and cherry picking groups. I just never made a youtube channel to prove to people my skill level or how well a gun shoots. Fortunately this rifle is well, well documented as an exceptionally accurate rifle, despite some of its flaws, but i may one day do what you're asking if I get bored. The amount of time I have in reloads and drive down to my range isn't worth it right now but if I get bored I may do that. The only issue is those expectations may have to shift just a hair wider now, as I am approaching the mark where round counts start eroding the throat and accuracy opens up. I have zero doubt it's still sub moa with 10 shots, just isn't what it used to be. Its primarily a hunting rifle now, and my new range toy is my 7 PRC. I'm consumed with that. But if I have time, and I'm bored enough, I'll throw it in the bag and tote it down there to shoot a group. I cant send it to you unless I have your info, so if you wanna subscribe in case I do do it thats the only way I know of for you to revisit it. It likely won't be during hunting season but maybe right after. Part of me is interested in seeing how much it's opened up at this round count myself. Not many people have put this many rounds through these rifles. I should probably show how much empty 6.5 brass I have as proof of round count too. In fact, I'm liking that idea the more I think of it. Have a couple product reviews I've gotta knock out first though.

      Oh man only going out to 500, that SWFA I run is going to be very hard to beat. There's a bunch that are great if you're only going to 500, just make sure the glass is clear and tracking is there. Magnification will NOT be an issue at 500. I've shot irons out to 600. Not optimal, sure, but you won't need over 10x at all. Even small targets. Just make sure your reticle is thin enough also. Many people buy a scope with a thick reticle and it covers their target. Personally I have the swfa which I'd recommend all day long everyday, the Primary Arms apollo 6.5 which is pretty good, and the Vortex Diamondback tactical ffp. All will do 500 yards easy. Hell I shoot 500 with my 22 and the diamondback

      That extra velocity you'll get out of the 22" is worth it, considering it's already on the slow end of the 6.5 velocity wise.
      Also, I may be wrong, but I don't think those are exactly the same gun. I was thinking one wasn't cold hammer forged or 5R rifling or something. Just my .02, but the guns are relatively cheap, so I'd add the stock later and shoot today with 100% the right gun instead of have the stock today and possibly have a gun that limits you at some point.

      I literally bought this gun Friday and ordered the makeup stock today... I have a small cerakote operation and thinking about coating this barreled action. Might wait for the scope first though. Athlon optics is pretty local to me (Kansas) and I've been eyeing an 8-32x56 FFP they have for this rifle. I've never attempted a shot beyond 300 yards before. You've convinced me to go all in on this rifle. I'll have roughly $1250 in it total. But a 1 mile gun for that price is very reasonable.

    • @brockedandloaded6034
      @brockedandloaded6034  5 років тому

      @@Damnitmathew absolutely. One thing to keep in mind is elevation. I think if I remember correctly the one drawback to the athlon scopes, which are pretty awesome, is that they don't have a lot of adjustment. The SWFA has quite a bit. Not trying to sell you on that one, just wanted to make sure you knew you'll need a lot for long range. I also have a 20 moa base, to further increase my usable elevation, and still needed to holdover 14 moa. If you're going straight long range, I'd probably get a 30-40 moa base. Keep in mind reticle size also. The finer the reticle the more of the target you can see. The thicker the more it will mask it at that distance. I'd go for clarity over magnification all day long. Just a few things to keep in mind. Thanks for watching man let me know how it turns out.
