Just wanted to add, crack the fill plug before you drain it. If it's seized, you are in a jam if you've already drained it.

SELF-RELIANCE is a beautiful thing. Well done bro... I too work on my own vehicles.

Check your Oil seperator hoses, I had the same problem if you have a M62 engine like me, leaking behind the motor. If not, it’ll be the valve cover gasket

I use to have a e53 x5 3.0 and I just bought a 4.4 x5 e53 today and I'm so worried somethings going to go wrong after all the forums I've read but I just love driving the car so damn much.. how much should this transmission servicing cost at a shop roughly? I live in Vancouver BC

Depends on the year. I have a 6speed 6HP26. I don't recommend getting the amazon solenoid kit. A quality company like FCP euro will be your best source for parts.
Parts alone will come to $700ish. Labor varies depending what shop you take it to. My guess would be $1000 total.
UA-cam and forums will be a great source of information on maintaining it yourself.

Which older Mercedes do you have? I have an 86 420SEL and a 95 E300 Diesel. Both great cars if you keep up with the care and feeding.

This is the kit I got. Older 4.4i have a different transmission and different filters. You can do a VIN decoder to see what transmission model you have. Or find out where its labeled on yours to make sure before you tear it apart. Good luck.

It did fix it. But it took about 2 weeks before the shift solenoids started working right. Then everything was perfect

Tell me you're from Wisconsin without telling me you're from Wisconsin.
