Don in Dallas here. Excellent presentation Style. This is one of the easiest reviews to sit through. My cars are a 2015 Passat TDI and a 2014 Nissan Leaf. It's time for more range. I've had my eyes on a Tesla Model 3 until covid-19 stole my income. But the Tesla is really too tiny on the inside. I'm a musician and I have equipment to move. Some of it will not fit in the model 3 without the hatchback. I've considered the Kia e Niro but the dealers are few and far between. Now Volkswagen comes out with an excellent addition. When I saw the first 2 reviews I was sold on this car. Your comments were much like everyone else, pointing out the good things and the bad things. But if you've owned an electric vehicle, you know the bad things already. Now I have to decide if I want to spend more money for the extras or if I would be satisfied with the base model. After all, I'm driving a Nissan Leaf which has few extras. But it's also the most fun car I've ever owned and the smallest. Thanks again for your good reviews. I have subscribed because of this one and your excellent style of presentation.
Thanks Don. I hope the industry you are relying on gets back on its feet soon & you get the support you need. I was a club DJ for years so I understand the lack of gigs from your point of view! Good bit bigger than a Leaf but with the seats down, the Leaf ain't bad for a bit of gear either.

Great review , Nobby. Great to get that empty unit to film in ! Love that sequence you follow - down one side, boot, back seat , front seat and drive. So many reviewers, start in drivers seat , then rear, then boot, around the outside then back to drivers seat ! Your way has more of a flow to it ! Yeah - overthinking 😆!!!
Great review as always -good to hear journalists talk about a car rather than deliver a script. Looks like a beautiful car and I could be sold on this EV. Any of the others I've seen seem to be very uninspiring and without character. Still 36k is an awful lot of money and I don,t think I'd forgive myself when I would inevitably find myself some where low on charge and nowhere to charge. Without the infrastructure is it not still a bit of a gamble?
Particularly with the 77kWh battery, once you leave destination A with a full battery, there really is little places you’ll be driving to that require a stop. 330-340kms is the absolute worst you’ll see from it. A minor enough increase in air temp and that’ll be 400kms minimum. I’ve a home charger and honestly, the anxiety leaves after a few days. Thanks for watching!

Hi Dee - not the case anymore but obviously it depends on management companies. I've seen some solutions where chargers are fitted to pillars etc in underground car parks. Not everyone doing that though, I accept.
Think this car is going to change a lot opinions on electric. Looks great, a proper family car and something that looks like it could break down that psychological range anxiety barrier. And well presented video again, top notch.
Hi from Montreal, Canada. Thank you Nobby for your detailed analysis of the new ID4, you have done an excellent review! My concern is the drivability in Quebec's cold weather, rear wheel drive, heating vs range, performance of the heating system, window defog/defrost being very critical for safety. What are your biggest complaints about his car? Thank You!
I think around 300kms is an educated guess for very cold temps. Obviously Montreal is colder than Dublin but I don't feel you'll see less than 300. The RWD setup is still only 200bhp so I think it will be no worse than any BMW that doesn't fall into high powered category.
Thx for that great review. I am a new owner of an eGolf, my first EV. Wow do I love the comfort and the quiet feeling it provides (yet still quite sportive!). Also own an older Alltrack that we want to change this summer so the ID.4 might be an option later on when it arrives here in Canada. Seems like an option if the “real” autonomy allows for over 300 km. To be seen. But oh gâwd! Why, oh why that move away from real mechanical buttons. It’s so much more easier -and safer- to drive when one doesn’t have to look at the commands and keep looking forward. Anyway, thx.
Hi Nobby, I’ve ordered the ID.4 style was just wondering how long it will take to charge on the standard charging pods that ye see in the likes of Tesco and on the side of the road etc
If you're going for the 77kWh battery... Tesco and the likes are probably all 7kW 3.6kW Home / Work 22 h 7kW Home / Work / Public Locations 12 h 22kW Work / Public Locations 8 h
And how many miles will it go if you leave it sit outside overnight and it’s 24 below zero so you’ll need the heater and the windshield wipers and the defrost and headlights system running ? Plus a windchill of 67 below zero and your bucking a 40 hr. Wind. If that won’t affect the rated mileage I’ll get one.
Of course it will but manufacturers can’t make mass production cars with that level of severity factored in. It wouldn’t be economically viable. Buy a tank! 🤣
@@NobbyOnCars It's the most luxurious brand of the ID.4 being offered besides the 1st Edition. The economy model is called the Pro and the top of the line is Pro S with the S meaning Statement. The model I got was $44,500 before the grant (about €37,000)

Really great review. I'll pop for an ID.3 (the 4 is too large for just the two of us) but you should consider retesting the lower-end battery sizes for the ID3 when it's available. It's likely to have the most-popular battery size and will have debugged software, and possibly other mechanical improvements (braking, for instance). The ID.3 deserves a final production review.
I’ll give you a better estimate this week as I’ll be taking an ID3 for a long term review with same battery and it’s set to be freezing but I’ve another ID3 review already which covers range albeit not as cold when I filmed it
I'm wondering about your opinion on which would be better, spending the 36/37 K on the ID3 style/family with it's extras or the 36K on the base model ID4? Just to note 80% of my driving will be my 160Km round trip work commute on my own..
All I can go on was the day I drove it with temps around 1-2c and the range being 320kms... from driving an ID3 for a month, back roads didn't make a big difference.
i wonder how time will affect charge rates, if you left the car idle for a week would it go down like 10% do you think ? The voice control seems a little slow to do things :o
Vw please add a software option to disable auto on and auto off when getting in/out of the seat , we have the button already let it have the option to work like normal with the break depresses. Also add the ability to add a pin on screen to start to prevent bigger kids just starting the car . Also give us the ability to disable the auto voice recognition as it can trigger when your not talking to it as shown
@@NobbyOnCars thanks Nobby, any mention on what the service intervals will be? Also the standard manufacturer's warranty is still 3 years i guess 8 years on battery only or does that include the electric motor too? Thanks
Almost 160kgs lighter in the less powerful / smaller battery version. The 77kWh / 200ish bhp version isn't particularly quick either. It has a nice smooth power delivery but doesn't snap your neck so the lower output versions, even more so.
Great review on theVW ID4, any chance of getting your hands on the Nissan Ariya? How do these cars compare in size to a Honda CRV? I have an old one, reliable but has always been noisy as hell, road noise and wind. Looking forward to getting an EV.
Quite the boot in the CRV but I think the ID4 wouldn’t feel a step down in terms of space. Not sure what plans Nissan have on bringing in an Ariya, I’d imagine they see others brands such as VW bringing an early production car in for a week for people to film/review so may also as the usual trips away to review cars can’t happen.
Nice review. Besides different "engines" (power and battery) are you aware that there are going to be different "styles" (like the ID 3 "base", "style" and "Max") ?
Vid at 1:15 - they're the T-section rails,, like used on Audi and on more and more VW group cars. So, no passing rope underneath. Have to get roof bars with the fitting for T-section rails - the Lidl ones in the shed won’t work anymore !!
@@Mancozeb100 Ah thanks, I guess it went by too fast the first time. That's the closest shot I've seen of them - I've had a hard time telling if they were actually attached, or if I was seeing reflections, or if there was some kind of rubber filler to reduce drag.
Have to say Nobby great review as ever. The technology especially the lane keeping and it steering itself was amazing. I don't think I'd ever be in a position to buy one but what's interesting for me is to see how other manufacturers like Renault of whom I am a fan as you know adopt similar technology themselves.
GREAT review and really loving this 1st edition of it. btw at 6:00 - did you miss the phone pocked on the top of the back of the seat - it is really subtle.
Hi nobby great review 👍. We still don't know what isn't in the 52kw base model at 36k but for about 4k more and fully loaded and bigger battery all be it maybe not as fresh looking as the id4 do you think kia e niro may be a better buy ? .cheers
This is a bit bigger but the Kia’s range is very good. 7 year warranty too! Might be worth waiting to see Base spec in the VW but the eNiro is going to feel that bit older in design. ua-cam.com/video/JM2zRZ4loew/v-deo.html
Just dropped in to say I really like your reviews. I've been flying through all the SUV ones but I'm still not sure which I want between this, the e Tron and the ev6. with all the trim level options on the e Tron it gets so confusing.
Just came across your channel...great stuff. This car looks superb....I think much better than the id3. Extremely quiet even with the extremely bad weather you were getting. How many miles would you get on a full charge (for those that live in Northern Ireland were we work in miles?) great review....have subscribed to your channel

36,000 is still expensive, but EV's are finally becoming slightly more affordable (that would be $50k here in Canada no doubt, most people can't buy it at that price). You should review the Skoda Citigo EV, its the only affordable EV for most. LOL Europe has a lot more options than here.
Excellent review. VW bringing the fight to Tesla. VW will win. Hopefully VW have plans ot introduce a iD1 as in replacement for Up! A realistic e car for the urban environment and couples without the need for kids space. Stay Safe. And Thank you.
Why do you think VW will win fight with Tesla ? Currently there not even in the same league , I guess it depends what you want from a car , exciting drive or A to B in misery .
Model Y from Berlin will blow the Market completely. Huge technology leap in structure and battery tech over US built current car. Quality will be well up, price lower as no WTO tariff. More for less will be very desirable!
OK it drives well along motorways and main roads . How does such a heavy lump hoon along B roads ? Can you actually enjoy driving the thing ? Would you take it for a 400 mile drive for absolutely no reason other than you want to ? Waiting for the day I can do that in my 2.4 petrol Accord .
Very much enjoy your ev reviews. Now that you’ve driven the id4 & the Kia e-Niro. If you were putting your money down which do you choose. I live in BC, Canada and have driven the e-Niro but my wife likes the looks of the id4 more. Buying one or the other in 2021. Jade in Courtenay
Many are asking the same question of me so you're not alone in this! The ID4 being a ground up EV is one angle that it has over the eNiro. Similar enough range - the eNiro is front wheel drive, VW is the opposite - is rear wheel an issue for the part of Canada you're in in terms of snow? 7 year warranty is for the entire car in the KIA (assuming warranty is same as Europe)... ID4 will probably get more looks from people that think oh look, there's that new VW EV, others will look at the KIA and think less of the statement it makes as it's a more under the radar type of car. Maybe that's a consideration for you, maybe not. eNiro has a bigger battery for less money - not hugely different in terms of range though. Ultimately, they're both great all rounders, I think the fact that the ID4 is right at the edge (currently) of tech would make me lust it a bit more, KIA have proven themselves already in the EV world though.
That boot opining switch is a terrible afterthought they should have kept it in the logo with the camera like many many other vws , it works, but now with both moved it just gets covered in winter crud

I'm wondering about your opinion on which would be better, spending the 36/37 K on the ID3 style/family with it's extras or the 36K on the base model ID4?
Just to note 80% of my driving will be my 160Km round trip work commute on my own..
Sounds like you don't need the space then... Get the ID.3 with the extra bits!
@@NobbyOnCars that's what I was thinking, probably keep saving and wait for the 21.2 reg..
What was it's Kwh/h efficiency like during your test? And how does that compare with others?
it's generally 18-22 kWh/100kms
@@NobbyOnCars (so about 2.8-3.45 miles per kwh) how does that compare to other EVs you've tested?
Drove one today, can the assist systems be turned off I hated when the car brakes itself.
the regen braking do you mean?
@@NobbyOnCars no the traffic sign recognition and bend ahead it jams on very frustrating
What is the range like on back roads where velocity changes up and down a lot?
All I can go on was the day I drove it with temps around 1-2c and the range being 320kms... from driving an ID3 for a month, back roads didn't make a big difference.
i wonder how time will affect charge rates, if you left the car idle for a week would it go down like 10% do you think ?
The voice control seems a little slow to do things :o
I have a drone that discharges some battery if it's not used after being charged to 100% so it's a great question and I'm not sure. Will try find out!
@@NobbyOnCars cheers nobby, cool car have to say it's a good commercial ev, bit pricey though
Also, yes the response time on the voice control can be slow but in terms of understanding me it was first time, every time
Vw please add a software option to disable auto on and auto off when getting in/out of the seat , we have the button already let it have the option to work like normal with the break depresses. Also add the ability to add a pin on screen to start to prevent bigger kids just starting the car . Also give us the ability to disable the auto voice recognition as it can trigger when your not talking to it as shown
Press ignition button as you get out of seat, temporary anyway
What's the warranty like? And what about servicing? Thanks
8 year warranty on battery. Servicing costs do you mean?
@@NobbyOnCars thanks Nobby, any mention on what the service intervals will be? Also the standard manufacturer's warranty is still 3 years i guess 8 years on battery only or does that include the electric motor too? Thanks
Hey, great review, thanks. Boot height (sheepdog) compared to Enyaq which seems less sloped?
I will check for you but no access to the Skoda just at the minute
the 52kw seems like very good value but would it be very dead to drive?
Almost 160kgs lighter in the less powerful / smaller battery version. The 77kWh / 200ish bhp version isn't particularly quick either. It has a nice smooth power delivery but doesn't snap your neck so the lower output versions, even more so.
@@NobbyOnCars thanks for that,i'll have to get a spin in one
Yes, the base is the 36k one.
Question about the roof rails: are they fixed to the roof along their entire length, or is it possible to pass a rope or hook underneath?
I'm nearly sure there isn't a gap - I'll check the raw footage that I have on the computer.
Vid at 1:15 - they're the T-section rails,, like used on Audi and on more and more VW group cars. So, no passing rope underneath. Have to get roof bars with the fitting for T-section rails - the Lidl ones in the shed won’t work anymore !!
@@Mancozeb100 fantastic info - thank you!
Love the technology like that sort of stuff and it’s great to be able to try it out I must say
@@NobbyOnCars yep I watched your review and Bob Flavin's on the same car and yours was much more in depth I have to say.
GREAT review and really loving this 1st edition of it. btw at 6:00 - did you miss the phone pocked on the top of the back of the seat - it is really subtle.
I did but a few have left comments like yourself - they're not as obvious as the ID3 at all, totally missed them!
This is the 1st edition Max, .so its got a lot more features that the 1st edition that's only available in the UK at the minute
How much will the awd version be
We'll have to wait and see..... might not be pretty !
Great review. Does the 1st Edition have an electric memory seat for the driver? It is not clear from the VW ID 4 specification.
Nearly certain it does !
@@NobbyOnCars I have a screenshot from your review that shows the driver's seat as electric with two memory buttons.
@@adrianneeves7194 yes but this is a German car - not sure if you’re talking about Ireland
Nice review but the button you're talking about at 4:04 is for the electrically retractable towbar. At least in my ID.4 1st🙃.
Ah! I am so used to that being for as I described so I didn't hit it. Next time :)
How are you finding yours?
James Bond should drive this in the next bond film. Would be interesting.
How long do the batteries hold a charge without driving?
Why do you ask?
Hi nobby great review 👍. We still don't know what isn't in the 52kw base model at 36k but for about 4k more and fully loaded and bigger battery all be it maybe not as fresh looking as the id4 do you think kia e niro may be a better buy ? .cheers
This is a bit bigger but the Kia’s range is very good. 7 year warranty too! Might be worth waiting to see Base spec in the VW but the eNiro is going to feel that bit older in design.

You tell 500km batery ?
Great Video Mark....would you say that the ID 4 1st edition is a significant upgrade on the egolf executive edition?
100%. Bigger, range, improved tech, ground up EV etc and 1st edition will come in under the 50k for business users in terms of BIK.
That's where I'm at, zero BIK tax saves me around £400 a month compared to a diesel or petrol company car. What's not to like
How would you compare wind noise to model 3? ( model 3 and Y have similar noise level )
ua-cam.com/video/tZGzokw9K2Y/v-deo.html
@@NobbyOnCars i know noise level of TM3, but i would like to know how this particular car compares to TM3.
Think I’ll stick with the Kia e-Niro - cheaper with a 7 year warranty and a 450 km range.
@@mikeb1039 beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Nice video, very informative, well done nobby
Thanks for watching Brian
At 2.6 tonnes, will it need to be serviced by a commercial dealer class 7?
I’ve since corrected - 2.1t
Do you know how many of these are being built each month? Is VW able to keep up with the demand? Great review by the way.
Not sure. 1,700 expected to sell in Ireland this year though!
The weight of the car is not 2.6 tons (max total weight is 2.66 tons), but 2.124 tons for Tech model :)
Fantastic review
Thanks
Just dropped in to say I really like your reviews. I've been flying through all the SUV ones but I'm still not sure which I want between this, the e Tron and the ev6. with all the trim level options on the e Tron it gets so confusing.
If you are worried about a dirty boot button, you can open it with a kick motion with your foot ;)
Saw that after I filmed - handy
For the boot measurement how deep does 50 inch go, i am trying to fit multiple sets of golf clubs, 4 with four individuals.
Thanks
Right up to back seats
Just came across your channel...great stuff. This car looks superb....I think much better than the id3. Extremely quiet even with the extremely bad weather you were getting. How many miles would you get on a full charge (for those that live in Northern Ireland were we work in miles?) great review....have subscribed to your channel
Anywhere between 325-450kms I’d say at a guess - 200 miles minimum
Great review, love the Car
Thanks Martin! 👍
very nice minimal display. love that. who has 30,000++ to spend on these vehicles. I love the idea of having an electric car, but the economics are still way out of reach for most folk
Its a lot but there’s always someone willing to buy new cars 😊
How does this compare in size to a Honda CR-V? I really can't wait to get my hands on one.
Quite similar really
@@NobbyOnCars I thought so. Everyone says it's similar to the Tiguan. But to me it closely resembles the CR-V.
@@Demobot1 from memory, boot could be a bit bigger. ua-cam.com/video/oS0Ezx4gNE8/v-deo.html
Best review yet, state of the art..
Thank you Dana!
I LIKE 👍 THE ID4. I would of to Decide Between the SKODA EV. BUT THE
ID4 LOOKS MORE SPORTY. SAME COLOURS IN ALL BLUE. MY FAVOURITE
COLOURS. NOT TOO TOO MOUCH PLASTICS. LIKE THE SKODA.
IT IS A WICKED CAR 🚙 THANKS FOR VIEWINGS UK 🇬🇧
36,000 is still expensive, but EV's are finally becoming slightly more affordable (that would be $50k here in Canada no doubt, most people can't buy it at that price). You should review the Skoda Citigo EV, its the only affordable EV for most. LOL Europe has a lot more options than here.
Another 5 years time should be interesting !
Have you reviewed the Skoda Enyaq?
April I'd say
Excellent review, many thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Why no panoramic sunroof in the UK version?😬😬😬
Excellent review. VW bringing the fight to Tesla. VW will win. Hopefully VW have plans ot introduce a iD1 as in replacement for Up! A realistic e car for the urban environment and couples without the need for kids space. Stay Safe. And Thank you.
An iD2 is planned for 2023 and should be comparable to the eUp in terms of size and cost
@@robertvanzant2653 the german government guantee that german car makers win
OK it drives well along motorways and main roads . How does such a heavy lump hoon along B roads ? Can you actually enjoy driving the thing ? Would you take it for a 400 mile drive for absolutely no reason other than you want to ? Waiting for the day I can do that in my 2.4 petrol Accord .
Nicely weighted on corners, no big float around bends. Doesn’t feel the weight that it is!
Great review! Thanks!!!
Thanks for watching!
Did this have the best pump? Great review, cheers
It does!
Do you think it's worth the extra £1250?
At the start of the review you said it was on 20in. alloys and at 15min you said it was on 21in. alloys, which is it?
Must’ve made a mistake.. it happens
@@NobbyOnCars No worries, but to put it another way which one was not the mistake?
@@johnlannin they’re 20s !
Thanks for the quick response. In the end it will come down to if the vw qualifies for our government rebate, which is base price related.
That boot opining switch is a terrible afterthought they should have kept it in the logo with the camera like many many other vws , it works, but now with both moved it just gets covered in winter crud
Looks like the screen blocks the view quite a bit.
