I can tell you the ingredients - locally grown Hanna barley that is floor malted by Urquell themselves, locally grown Saaz hops (pronounced "zots") and their own proprietary yeast/yeasts (there is some dispute about whether they use one or both of two different yeast strains), and that's it. They do not use any malts other than their pale (about 1.8-2.0 Lovibond) lightly kilned malt.
Just bought this yesterday after learning of the Czech people's gold metal in per-capita beer consumption. It's excellent. The word that comes to mind is balance

Went to the brewery when I went to Czech Republic. The sweetness is characteristic from the way they brew it, they brew it with wood fires underneath big copper vats the old school way which they described heats the bottom faster than the rest (as opposed to electric heating used by other breweries) this causes caramelisation at the bottom giving it that sweet maltness. Absolutely cracking beer. Aged 30 days in wooden barrels underneath the brewery as well on the tour they give you some beer that is 5 days away from been ready it’s cloudy and tastes proper fresh and different. They also talked about how they closed down their brewery under license in Poland which we was getting beer from in the Uk as its quality wasn’t as good as the czech version so now all pilsner urquell beer is brewed in plzen, czech and imported. 👍

If you ever get chance to go Prague it’s worth doing the small trip on train to pilzen for a tour of the brewery. One more thing I find interesting: they send a horse and cart with wooden kegs of fresh tank beer to the pubs in pilzen. Sam smiths brewery in tadcaster do the exact same thing sending kegs of old English bitter on horse and cart to pubs in tascaster. Both breweries have their own blokes who make the wooden barrels on premises. Cheers mate

There are a number of detailed UA-cam documentaries on the history of Pilsner Urquell. The sample they provide you with on the tour from the barrels is otherworldly. Pilzen also has VERY soft water which is extremely important. Barrels are made by hand, still. You have to experience it from the tank.

If you ever visit Czech Republic visit a good local bar to have it on tap. Have it fresh from the big tanks, it is completely different story, although bottled one I like as well. It always surprises me even I know what to expect.

Hi Paul, I live in Australia and love this beer. Unfortunately for what ever reason it doesn’t travel well in the bottle and I often find in a case of 24 there will be 3 or 4 that have lost a lot of their carbonation which completely changes the profile of this beer in fundamental ways. Unless you get a good crisp carbonated pop when you pop the cap chances are it’s been spoiled. In your video I could tell that your bottle was also most probably spoiled judging by how quickly the head dissipated. This beer is known for its thick and long lasting head and the brewers say it must be able to hold a small coin within sinking to pass as a batch. Look for the 500ml cans or straight from the tap and then do another review of this legendary beer. You will find that the malt and sweet profiles you picked up will not be present and you will experience the best Pilsner and beers in the world
You are right on. I grew up in the Pilsen area, and my grandpa and father were heavy beer drinkers (I am a beer drinker as well, but beer in the US is not good). Frankly, Paul didn't poor the glass the proper way, I could see it when he popped it. He should've better drank it straight from the bottle. Such a low head would get him thrown out of the pub over there in Czech. There is almost a religious way to treat beer in the Czech Republic. They have other macro breweries over there, and everyone is as good (Staropramen, Krusovice, Kozel, Branik, Karel, U Fleku,Budwar, Protivin, Gambrinus.Radegast) as Pilsen, depending on where one lives. I used to buy a cage of Pilsner here in California, before stupid Covid, but it is not available anymore. So, I ended up drinking bottled Pilsner and some are not good, you are right. What a shame. The beer is like bread you must know how to eat it. It is obvious that the old beer culture is gone, we are old, and Pilsner Urquell was bought by South Africans. Where the world goes, I do not know.
Like most beers, Plzen is better on tap than in the bottle, na tocene. The thing with lagers is there is this up front bite, then very little after - in mouthfeel body.Czech lagers are very carbonated, which they consider an essential attribute.I joke with them, 'wheres your knife and fork you can't drink all that frothy head?' lol Ales can have an up front bite with a variety of flavours; fruit, nuts, chocolate etc. I prefer a quality IPA cask conditioned. Prefer ales. Though the best beer is the one in my hand....at that moment ; ) Cheers.

I don’t remember it being particularly great but not awful either (I think that’s my general opinion of BrewDog). What exactly is the difference between a pilsner and a lager. I have heard that apparently pilsner is meant to be a lot more easy drinking then lager. Would you say that’s true, I’m not sure if I’ve actually ever had pilsner before and just not realised I’ve had it before. But as a matter of fact I’ve ordered some of this stuff of Amazon, it will be delivered the weekend. 12 cans I’ve got. So hopefully it’s a good one. LOL
Essentially a Pilsner is a lager. The difference being Pilsner’s are usually more hoppy than lagers. You tend to get a more dry, spicy or ‘Hoppy’ finish to them. Pilsners traditionally have ‘Saaz’ hops in them which lagers generally don’t. Hope that helps somehow. Cheers 🍻

Totally agree. I talk a lot about the different styles and flavours of beers and it can become quite complex. However, the best beers are the one’s you can just relax with and enjoy.

I think you got some wrong batch or something. The foam dropped so fast and there is no "light" carbonation, this is weird. And I should know, I am from Pilsen and drank thousands of these :-/
It's the original German name, "Urquell" (for English speakers: pronounced something like OOR-KVELL), meaning Original fountain or source. (and yes, it is rather sweet an malty)
Imported Pilsner taste horrible in comparsion to one in Czech Republic. It's like completely different beer. In czech it's bottled in green glass and it lacks that weird sort of sweetness you described. It's like more crispy- refreshing, but more hoppy and bitter as well.

This is the best of the pilsners hands down, although i'd prefer if it was slightly stronger

Everyone in Czech will laugh out loud how you fill the glass. The Pilsner Urquell must be 1:1 foam/beer in the glass otherwise you kill the taste.
