One of the best operas ever written. Wonderful singing by the whole cast. Eva Marton is simply terrific here, her account of Kostelnicka is perfection. Bravissimi tutti.
JENUFA - one of the very great works of Opera. It is at the very top of my list of great operas. I have seen it live 4 times and it chills me to the bone each time.
I had never watched a Janacek opera, and what a revelation! So much more profound than many mainstream operas. I enjoyed the fine performances in this production.
EVA MARTON always delivers !!! Her KOSTELNICKA is so deeply convincing !! Kostelnicka is another GREAT ROLE for a GREAT ARTIST like EVA !!!Thanks EVA ....you are OVERWHELMING !!!!!!!
I'm going to see Jenufa this coming Saturday at the San Francisco Opera. I hear it is amazing ... but I've talked to people who've told me that this production of Jenufa with Eva Marton and Nina Stemme is the platinum standard. Just an amazing performance. Thank you for posting.
I am so overwhelmed with emotion...... I love this opera, and I love these performance. BRAVISSIMA EVA MARTON, bravissima Nina Stemme, Jorma Silvasti and Pär Lindskog. I remember the great moments as I've seen this phantastic opera the first time, in the 90th Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, with Ute Trekel-Burckhardt (Kostelnicka), Eva-Maria Bundschuh (Jenufa), Peter Jürgen Schmidt (Laca), Reiner Goldberg (Steva) and the unforgettable Gisela Schröter (The Old Buryja). These are magic moments...... A BIG THANK for posting this.
My favorite last minutes of all operas are the ones of Rheingold, Walküre, Götterdämmerung, Rosenkavalier and Jenufa. The apotheosis Janacek creates here, the colourful music and the intensity of emotion are a masterpiece itself. Unfortunately the conductor doesn´t know how to emphasize this particular moment. This doesn´t sound like Janacek but rather Strauss or Wagner.
Thank you so much for this. I didn't know what to expect when I came across it. It's a splendid piece. Such depth of feeling is rare and the artists are all splendid. The casting is ideal. The acting is as impressive as the singing. I shall come back to this often.
Beautiful, I've been watching different performances. I have never seen Jenufa. I did not intend to make almost a day of watching. I thought I would just touch on a few of the highlights instead I was a captive. This to me was the finest performance. I have seen Eva Marton in several roles she is a force of nature, just mesmerizing. It was a pleasure to hear Nina Stemme so beautiful I will look for her work. Also may I mention the set designer & lighting director, to go from the sunny aspect to the forbidding was so effective emotionally for me. The Director, superb choices the arc of movement with the libretto no pandering to modern discord. Bravi to everyone and that includes the camera work for this production.
Astonishing!!! Possibly my favourite opera of all time. BUT......check out the old Munich video with Varnay as Kostelnichla....end of Act 2 is unbelievable.
Has everyone heard the Mattila/Silja/Haitink recording from Covent Garden 2002? I saw the same cast with a different conductor in 2008 at the Met with this production and imo that's the gold standard as far as this opera goes. Mattila is fantastic and her tone is perfect for this role.
My Kostelnickas have been Amy Schuard, Kerstin Meyer, Pauline Tinsley, Patricia Johnson and Leonid Rysanek. Jenufas included Lorna Hayward, Elisabeth Soderstrom and Josephine Barstow. What an opera.
I came here looking for that line, I saw your comment and I thought that it'd be that line. Congratulations Sir, you and I have a similar taste, which means that you have a very good taste.
what a surprise to know that stemme once had a beautiful, lyrical voice. today she uses her shredded voice for such heavy and inappropriate roles like turandot.
Some of the critics don’t have any idea what they are talking about. They need to keep their ridiculous negative comments about opera and opera singers to themselves and not judge people on how they do the roles.
Awsome! Very beautiful opera and very good opera singers... except for Eva Marton: she's terrible! She screams and she have too much vibrato! In my opinion... any way, thanx a lot, Walter Cross!
operaperu Are you sure, #operaperu? I'm not very expert about the singers and, in this case, probably it's as you say. In any case, I'm sorry, but I don't like her. Thank you very much.
Felice Invernici, I am sorry to say that, but you really have no idea about this opera. The performance of Eva Marton is exceptional, she sounds this role to the deepest spiritual abyss. This role a dramatic soprano or mezzosoprano only can sing at the end of an outstanding career. Eva Marton IS the Kostelnicka, in every second.

Nina Stemme´s Czech diction is just priceless! I can easily understand every word.
1000% professionalism. Amazing.
What a moving and beautiful opera as are all the operas by Janacek. I hope more and more opera lovers recognize this.
I had never watched a Janacek opera, and what a revelation! So much more profound than many mainstream operas. I enjoyed the fine performances in this production.
Jenufa IS mainstream!!!
BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO especially for Mrs Marton, her acting and the way she understood the role, it is sooooooooooo strong BRAVO
EVA MARTON always delivers !!! Her KOSTELNICKA is so deeply convincing !!
Kostelnicka is another GREAT ROLE for a GREAT ARTIST like EVA !!!Thanks EVA ....you are OVERWHELMING !!!!!!!
OPERA WORLD x
I would die for Eva
I don't know why I love this opera so much, but I do. It sounds amazing, and the story is so unique and moving.
Two years later, I still love this. Leaving note to myself for part starting at 1:09:39, which is incredible (I love the violins).
Magnificent performance! Nina Stemme is radiant, Eva Marton holds her own.

Just an amazing performance. Thank you for posting.
The one at the Bavarian Opera conducted by Rafael Kubelik is the platinum standard. It is a pity the sound is not very good.
I am so overwhelmed with emotion...... I love this opera, and I love these performance. BRAVISSIMA EVA MARTON, bravissima Nina Stemme, Jorma Silvasti and Pär Lindskog. I love this opera, and the ending is just SO moving.
Wonderful Thank You! Great cast, and that includes Eva Marton who really lives her role.
thank you so much for uploading this. too emotional to write more words.

My mom took me to see this one, it was amazing.
Same. We have great moms.
How wonderful, a very fine performance. I shall be going to The R.O.H to see their production in March.

It is so beautiful performance ... I love Czech music

Atto I: 2:20 - 41:58
Atto II: 43:13 - 1.29:55
Atto III: 1.31:56 - 2.01:40

Great opera, great performances. Well done, everyone.
I loved the whole performence but Miss Marton and Miss Stem were my favorite performers.
Thanks for sharing! Such a moving work!

Pauline Tinsley was FABULOUS in the role!
Gosh, yes.... the Welsh/Scottish co-production in the '70s with Tinsley and Barstow was sensational. @@stevenmathers6661
@@stevenmathers6661 Gosh yes.... Tinsley and Barstow in David Pountney's Welsh/Scottish co-production were indeed FABULOUS!
37:07-37:13 is probably my favourite line in the history of opera.
Agree. Especially like performances by Pavel Černoch, since Czech is his mother tongue...
I came here looking for that line, I saw your comment and I thought that it'd be that line. Congratulations Sir, you and I have a similar taste, which means that you have a very good taste.
Agree entirely. Jenufa's part preceding it is amazing too.
what a surprise to know that stemme once had a beautiful, lyrical voice. today she uses her shredded voice for such heavy and inappropriate roles like turandot.
this is such a glorious opera with a splendid cast. From Nina Stemme as Jenufa to Viorica Cortez as the grandmother.
thank you Walter Cross. God bless. :-)
I am big fan of ,,Její pastorkyňa,,/ Jenůfa. I read a book. It was movingly.
This is the best Jenufa. Thanks so much for posting!
I saw this version live. Really HARD to surpass. Difficult to do it better!
very well done indeed
Janaček - a big one. A very one.

Bravissimo !
Molto bella!

Leos Janacek and Nina Stemme. Can it get better?
Elisabeth Soderstrom
Přílíš skvěla prace. Lepší nahrávky není.
Just watched this again.......ab fab! Is Marton as good as Silja???? Yes.
Cool
46:54 angelic
Did anyone hear MET's Oksana Dyka? thoughts?
Saw it last night, she was excellent. But Karita Mattila stole the show!
Karita stole the show and ran AWAYYYY with it!!
I was jumping out of my heels at the end! Truly great singing!
Does anybody know, from which year is this record? Thanks :)
You are welcome.
1:08:56 ❤
Marton's voice was not the same anymore, but her Kostelnicka is terrifying. Rysanek looks sane compared to her!
Starts at 2:20

Find Nadezda Kniplova to know how Kostelnicka should be sung. Poor Marton, she suffers so much to sing that as it was written...
@Jiri Zika: Kniplova is fantastic. Never I see you on stage, only in recording.
I would prefer if Eva Marton sung the correct notes instead of inventing every third pitch.
The story seems Spanish, not the cast though even if they take the Liceo by the storm.
The rock band Queen stole a lot from Jenufa
What makes you say trat?
Awsome! Very beautiful opera and very good opera singers... except for Eva Marton: she's terrible! She screams and she have too much vibrato! In my opinion... any way, thanx a lot, Walter Cross!
Felice, Eva sings the way Kostelnicka has to sing! Shes old and desperate. Can't be a beatiful voice, but dramatically convincing. She's great here!
operaperu Are you sure, #operaperu? I'm not very expert about the singers and, in this case, probably it's as you say. In any case, I'm sorry, but I don't like her. Thank you very much.

Matthias Lorenz You are right. Actually, I don't know this drama, but I trust in you. I'm sorry.
+Felice Invernici You are right about her vocal abilities at this stage in her career but for this role it is not detrimental.
Ok, I'm a big fan of Eva Marton, but here she is just bad - false rhythms, false notes, bad pronunciation.
