    Any advice for me? I want to potentially dye red full grain (or half grain, I can't tell!) some soft 1980s leather lace-up boots from a dull straight red to an oxblood colour. Here in the UK there is an array of dye products to pick from, including Fiebings, but I think perhaps a stain would be better than a vinyl dye, which only covers the leather. Is there any prep I should do? Appreciate any advice.

    Any advice on how to re-dye a leather table top without covering or damaging gilding on the center and around the circumference? I cleaned it with saddle soap to remove a dark brown top cover and especially some green ink someone had applied to the central logo and some of the outside gilding (with limited success, BTW) and in the process removed some of the cordovan leather dye. Just hope to slightly darken the leather and reduce some of the uneven coloration. Thanks!

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  6 років тому

      You would need to use deglazer. If you are referring to gilding as gold leaf or gold paint on the edge, that’s tough! Don’t get near it with dye or deglazer! You could put masking tape over the edge but I think the deglazer and dye will leach under the tape in areas and could damage the gilding. Hopefully this helps. Thanks for watching!

    Hi leather guy! Wondering what will be the product to use for aligator / crocodile leather? Got a vintage bag I am thinking of changing it's colour. I am thinking Fiebing's leather dye will be the way to go? Since Angelus would only stay on the surface? Just wondering if Fiebing would go through the shiny layer that aligator / croc leather usually has?

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  5 років тому

      Hi there,
      You will want to treat the bag with a deglazer before you try applying color. That will remove the shiny finish and allow the leather to take a dye (unless it has a bombe finish, meaning the leather was burnished to create the shine, it may not be as easily removed). Angelus does make a dye, we just don't carry it. The only Angelus we have is paint which will only adhere to the surface. Fiebings should work just fine in this instance.
      You will want to spot test the dye you pick on your bag (in an inconspicuous area), as changing an existing color can be a challenge and you'll want to be sure the color you are changing it to isn't going to interact poorly with the existing.

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  7 років тому +1

      Hello. If the belt is leather, you would want to follow our 3 easy steps for dyeing...Deglaze it... Dye it...Seal it... you can go to this link:
      www.theleatherguy.org/dyeing-leather-in-3-easy-steps.html
      I am guessing the belt you have is leather. Depending on how it is treated, manufactured, and it's composition could affect your results. It would be difficult to say without actually seeing it. Once you have the products, you may want to try dyeing the leather on the back side where it wraps around the buckle. This would allow you to see if it was the result you were seeking, before completely dyeing the whole thing. Once you begin dyeing, there is no turning back, it is permanent. Hopefully this helps...Thanks so much for watching!

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  4 роки тому +1

      Nope, that is totally up to you and how you are using the product you are dyeing! Some folks throw a little leather conditioner on at the end to add some moisture back to the leather and build up a little water resistance and that's it. Just be sure to buff the dyed leather really well to remove any excess pigments so they don't rub off with use. Thanks for watching!

    I used the black version of this leather dye on a handbag and it has been a few days and there is still some residue when I wipe the bag with a tissue paper. I can still pick up some black colour and I'm too worries to use the bag in case I get it on my clothes. Do you need to put a layer on top of this product or have I not waited long enough for it to dry?

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  5 років тому

      Hi there! Hmm, there are a couple reasons that's occurring. Was this an already dyed and finished handbag? If so, did you deglaze the handbag beforehand? If not deglazed, the dye will not penetrate the leather fully as there is usually a finish applied to already dyed leathers.
      The other issue could be the leather itself. If it was packed with waxes or oil during the tanning process, it will not take the dye.
      Sometimes black pigments are just really strong and can take some buffing to remove the excess pigment. Give it a good wipe down with a clean cloth and make sure the color isn't lifting all together from the leather. If the color remains even throughout, the dye has likely penetrated and there is just some pigment left over. If the color starts coming up, the issue is likely with the leather. You can certainly put a top coat like resolene or bag kote on top, but I would be sure that the dye set up correctly and no longer rubbing off before adding another product. Hope this helps!

    When I used navy blue, my piece had a red sheen to it. I used just regular tooling leather. Did I use too much dye?

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  3 роки тому

      An odd sheen or metallic look can appear if too much dye is used. You should be buffing the leather after the dye dries to remove excess pigment, so try this and see if that helps the situation! If buffing doesn't remove it, you can try removing some of the excess with alcohol on a clean cloth, but I would test it in an inconspicuous area first. The alcohol can alter the color where ever you apply it, so be mindful.
      Next time you use a dark dye, be sure to shake the bottle beforehand to mix the pigments a bit too. This can help with more even application. Hope this helps!

    Will Fiebing's leather dye work on Chromexcel (Horween) leather boots? Do I still need to deglaze? My CXL seems to absorb mink oil, saddle soap in the past. I just need to freshen the navy blue color as parts have faded into brown patches.

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, Fiebings will work on CXL, and you would definitely want to deglaze. Wax, conditioner, polish, and more can get in the way of the dye penetrating the leather.
      However, I am always a bit leery to recommend adding dye to fix a fade problem. If you are applying it overall, it will be less noticeable, but where the leather is lighter will stay lighter. I would suggest before taking the leap into dye, trying something like Saphir Shoe Cream. It comes in highly pigmented colors that can help even out your color without running the risk of making your boots too dark or possibly patchy. Plus you apply it just like a wax or polish. Unfortunately, we don't sell it, but they have their own site and are sold by several vendors.
      Whichever route you decide to take, be sure to test it in a small area first to make sure you like the finish before you apply it all over. Hope this helps a bit!

    wanting to dye the sleeves of my black leather jacket red- would this work or would the color not show?

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  7 років тому +1

      The Fiebing's leather Dye would not be able to do this on a black leather. When dyeing with fiebng's you generally need to go darker, like red to black. To dye the sleeves you would need a surface dye not a penetrating dye. Angelus Acrylic dye could accomplish this but that large of an area would really need to be "sprayed on." Also you would have to use a preparer or deglazer to prepare the dye surface. This would be quite an undertaking. Hopefully this answered your question. Thanks for watching!

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  7 років тому

      The Fiebings is alcohol based and it is a "penetrating" dye. The Angelus is acrylic and is a surface dye. The 2 are completely different. The fiebings can be used on leather shoes. As a cobbler I used it on leather shoes regularly. If you are dyeing the same or a darker color the fiebings will work well. Thanks for watching.

    So I recently tried dying some stuff with the Fiebing's Navy dye. Instead of blue, it came out dark purple. How can I fix this? Is that because I didn't use a deglazer? If I needed to dilute it, can I use 91% isopropyl Alcohol instead of like 99% or methanol?

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  6 років тому

      Thanks for watching... There are alot of factors. Yes you do want to use degalzer so the dye can properly penetrate. Also when using the penetrating alcohol based dye like Fiebings it is recommended to dye a color that is darker than what it originally was. Sometimes the original color of the leather can cause this too. Whenever you are dyeing it is a good rule of thumb to test it on an inconspicuous spot to see if you are going to get the intended result before you do the whole thing. Lastly multiple coats will darken the color, but all the previous memtioned factors can still affect the outcome. Hope this helps.

      Hello. Thanks for watching. the Fiebing's Leather dye is "leather dye," and would not work with man-made vinyl or plastic materials. The Angelus dye would work for something like that but the surface would have to be prepared, dyed and sealed. that would require so a great amount of the dye and multiple light coats. You almost need a sprayer with an air compressor to evenly perform this. We would not recommend this for a beginner. this would be a great undertaking.

    The Army is going from tan rough-out boots to Coyote brown. One of my tan boot models is not going to be made in Coyote. What type of dye would you suggest? I'm not worried about color coming off on socks, but we wear our pants bloused on the outside of the boots. Will the dye rub off onto the uniform pants. I'm not being cheap. But, as I mentioned, the Corocran boot company stated that my model will not be produced in Coyote. I have bought some other Coyote boots, so I do not mind giving this a try. I can't use them for official wear, anyway. For those who are not familiar, Corcoran boots have been made for the Army since WW2, maybe before and they are very traditional in appearance. Would the dye darken the metal lace holders, or do you think I'd need to paint those? Thanks so much. Someone asked a similar question, but I have a very specific issue. As far as color matching, there are so, so many boot manufacturers that the Coyote doesn't have to be exact. My local shoe shop wouldn't even try.

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  5 років тому

      Hi there! Firstly, this dye would not be recommended for Rough Out leather. You would want a dye made specifically for suede. Fiebings does make this product, we just don't carry it, sorry! Angelus also offers suede dye. Once totally dry, you really shouldn't have to worry about color transfer onto your pants. The hard part is matching that color. The Coyote looks to be deeper in tone, and perhaps you could do this by applying a light brown dye. I don't think this will be exact, but it could be going in the right direction. I would highly suggest checking out your color choices with either of the brands I mentioned and if you decide to test it, do it in a small and inconspicuous spot first to see if you can achieve a similar color!

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  5 років тому

      Hi there, A good shoe polish (no color) is a great way to finish freshly dyed boots. A cream polish will condition the boot leather as well as bring some shine as dye can look a little flat once dried. Wax polishes are good for upkeep as they will help protect the boot from the elements. Follow that with a shoe brush to remove excess dye and polish and you should have a good looking finish! Hope this helps!

    I painted my steering well, and after I dry it now all the paint on my hands

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  4 роки тому

      If you did not deglaze the leather beforehand, the dye will not penetrate the leather. I'd also double-check what material your steering wheel is. A large number of steering wheels are man-made materials that leather dye will not penetrate. The dye will rub off if it does not actually soak into the material it is applied to. Hope this helps!

    hi i want dot know why my leather become hard after dyeing it ?

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  5 років тому +1

      Hi there, Alcohol Based Dyes like these, can dry the leather a little as the alcohol evaporates. The alcohol is actually what allows for the quick drying time people have come to expect from this product. Putting the dye on in thin layers can help keep it from over drying. Some folks prefer to dilute their dye before using it, or even lightly moisten the leather beforehand, while others like to just apply the dye directly to the leather as we show, which is the quickest and easiest way to do it. Not everyone will experience stiffening of the leather when dyeing, but it can certainly happen! You can easily treat the leather with a good leather conditioner or even a little neatsfoot oil after dyeing to soften it back up. But the leather will also soften with use as well! Hope this helps!

      Hello...Thanks for watching! Yes you would want to use deglazer to prepare the leather and allow the dye to fully penetrate the leather. We do have a video showing how to do this and th link is below. This is very easy to do and will provide you the best results.

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  7 років тому

      If it’s not too oily you can do it. Deglaze it first. You can’t go lighter only darker. Whatever color you choose will be darker than the advertised color swatch because the leather is already dyed and darker than Natural Veg Tan. Advertised colors based on dyeing un-dyed natural Veg Tan. Hope this answered your question...Thanks for watching!

      As long as the leather is smooth and not suede yes it should be fine. They would need to stripped with deglazer prior to dyeing and the then sealed with resolene after dyeing them. Also you would want to choose a color which was darker, than what you currently have...Thanks for watching!

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  7 років тому

      Did you dye the whole couch or just a spot? We and Fiebings do not recommend dyeing that large of a piece. In most cases you would want to be referred to a professional. When dyeing leather, it should be sealed with resolene so they dye does not bleed off. Even then, you may not be entirely successful. We would recommend getting a advice from a local professional.

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  8 років тому

      How many coats of leather have you applied to the leather? If you do not have enough dye on the leather the leather color will show through causing it to look like it has streaks.
      How are you applying the dye?

      Hi thanks for replying,i was applying with a wool dauber but that left dark patches, so now with a cloth, i mainly use the pro oil dye but cant get the purple in pro oil so just used the regular dye, at first i thought maybe i had purchased a fake bottle of ebay but its happened again with dye from a different supllier, even round the rim of the cap is gold??

    • @TheleatherguyOrg

      That does seem odd. it very well could be because the purple is made a little differently then the other dyes. I will test it out on my end to see if I can replicate the issue and see if I can figure out a good solution for you. I'm sorry we don't have a direct answer right away for you.

      Deglazer removes any finished applied to the leather in the tanning process and allows the dye to penetrate the leather. You can apply the sealant of your choice once the dye is dry. We have a few videos on different finishers!

    How did you deglaze it? I have some golden tanned goatskin that I want to dye a darker color. Do I need to deglaze that?

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  5 років тому +1

      The product you need is actually called a deglazer! We have a video here on our channel showing you how to do this with Fiebings Deglazer. If you have a leather that has already been finished or dyed, you will want to deglaze it. Sometimes, even veg tan needs to be deglazed if it has been sitting around for a while or handled often. The product simply removes any oils, grease, or coating that may have built up or been applied to the leather, that would not allow the dye to penetrate evenly.

    How long does dye dry out?

    • @TheleatherguyOrg
      @TheleatherguyOrg  5 років тому +1

      These dyes can dry in as quickly as 10 minutes. Some prefer to let it sit for a few hours and upwards of 24 hours before applying a finishing coat to it. Humidity can affect drying time if you live somewhere where that is a factor. You can lightly touch the surface after some time has passed and see if it feels dry to the touch. Hope this helps!

      Commonly people seal it with Acrylic Resolene...We have that at: www.theleatherguy.org/leather-protective-finish-fiebings-acrylic-resolene-4-oz-mellow-gloss
      Once the dye dries, I would recommend buffing the surface with a soft white cloth until you no longer see any of the residue of the color. Then apply the resolene. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

      Angelus is not a dye, but a paint, meaning that the color is only on the surface level. The dye will actually soak into the leather and is not likely to scratch or come off due to wear!

      Honestly, you could sew just about any leather to each other. It would depend on your pattern or use as to how to make it work best. This is going to be a stiffer leather to use, but many use it as patches for hats so it can attached to other leathers and fabrics.

      Dyeing the roughout is very tough....Sealing it you may have an issue as well if clothing or attire were rubbing against it., Leather shoes and boots can have this problem if you are wearing white socks...It could actually come off...You may want to get a top grain leather in the color you wanted that has the rough out back side...That would probably be the easiest solution....hope this helps....Thanks for watching!
