What makes a cult classic video game? It's the combination of a lot of unique elements, some weird, some great, that creates a charm that can't be replicated. EarthBound has that charm, and on a second playthrough of it I feel like I can appreciate this game even more. People are usually introduced to this classic JRPG when they see Ness in Smash Bros. They think to themselves "So THAT'S where you came from!" And then they discover a gem of a game with it's amazing music and timeless themes.
Let me know what you thought about my EarthBound review! Also let me know what other games I should re-complete for New Game Plus!

This whole damn video
In the original Japanese PK (psychokinesis) is reserved for offensive abilities, whereas PSI is for support abilities. For some reason all the abilities were named PSI.
EmRoK the Verdant I scrolled through the comments searching for the answer. Thank you. 🙏
It's weird because Earthbound NES followed the Japanese labelling of PSI and PK.
Cullen Flynn are you talkin about mother 1 which was only in Japan when you say “Earthbound NES”
@@thebandanapirates8591 there were a few completed copies of the mother 1 english translation, which was originally going to be called earthbound instead of mother 2. however, by the time the game was finished, the snes was the main focus for nintendo and rpg games werent very popular in the west yet, so the rest of the carts werent produced. though at least 3 of them were confirmed from the staff involved with the western release to be real copies of the finished product.
Yep, Psychokinesis and Psionics
As a 12 year old kid, I remember getting to Gigas, exhausting every option and item trying to figure out how to beat him several times. Then as a last resort before death one time, using " pray" and the realizing that was the trick. I was blown away.
Same for me. Ending of this game is a masterpiece. Mother 3… fucking incredible as well :)
I had the same experience. I used up all my psi, all my companions died and were revived and died again, I could not figure out how to win. Then FINALLY I tried "pray" and it was so satisfying.
It is sad that new games don’t give you the opportunity to see the world that you saved. I loved this aspect in earthbound.
There is one game out there that does that, a game heavily inspired by Earthbound - Undertale. I could never recommend that game enough.
@@44R0NM10 undertale is awesome
@@44R0NM10 yes! I played that a couple years ago and loved that too.
Dragonquest does that, at least the older games do
@44R0NM10 I can now see several similarities between earthbound and the Toby Fox games because I am playing earthbound for the first time and am currently trying to get the star pendant.
Imagine a Studio Ghibli (or Ponoc) adaptation of Earthbound tho.
I think EarthBound would be better in the style of a 90's saturday morning cartoon rather than an Anime tbh
@@BahuschBahusch I don't think it should be animated. Despite being goofy on surface it has really deep dramatic plot. It would work best as Stranger Things/It-style TV series..
@@TheRezro You're underestimating the power of cartoons, my friend
@@BahuschBahusch I don't. I'm big in that. But I think that people tend to focus too much on goofy art-style (what fit video game) and not about what really make this game great. In the end I wouldn't mind both anyway..
See , I imagined in the style of Studio Ghibli or Ponoc because they’re the only company I know of that can pull off the “moment of silence and tranquility” that Jirard talks about in the video. A Saturday morning cartoon style might work in the action scenes but those parts where it slows down and it’s peaceful, IDK of anyone else that could do it. Maybe it needs a halfway point between both (or if a live action version would be made, a director that could pull off both sides).
“Even someone whose heart is as cold as mine fell in love with this game.”
Since when is jirard known for being cold hearted? He always seems like a very nice guy and is passionate about games and their stories and such.
Never forget that BERD♪ loves PizzaO and uses the power of PSI-SNES to body enemies.
Actually the who Dad thing was a reflection of his own situation. Since at the time of production and creation of the Mother series he was in a position where he couldnt see his daughter much. And Phone dad was more so just a message for her and others he will help and be there for her even if he isnt there physically
So he wasn't far off
Yeah I thought it was kind of weird in this video and in their lets play it made it sound like they thought Ness's father wasn't a good dad or something because you never see him. But honestly it was clear that he was doing everything he could, and their family is in a lot of debt so that's why he is working all the time, but he continues to give Ness a lot of money and always talks to him a lot on the phone. And at the end of the game he promises to be home next week for Ness's birthday and mentions how he can't wait to talk to Ness about everything. He seems like a good dad to me.
I remember my friend playing EB on an emulator and I told him. "Oh the skate punk has like 1/128 chance or 4/128 chance of dropping a pizza."
5 seconds later, he gets into a fight with a skate punk, the first skate punk he found in the game.
And do you wanna take a %@&$ing guess at what happened?
Snake: "Ness, you like to work hard, just like The Bos- Er... Your Mother."
Now that's an interesting headcanon that I've now adopted.
@@Bluecho4 I didn't understand
@@Bluecho4 can you explain me please
Please
@@ayushtyagi1673 I just found it amusing, the idea that Snake is Ness's father.
They need to re-release this game on the Switch!
I agree but so do multiple other snes games
It better be on Snes online soon. I only just completed it, but I'd love to go through it again.
Here's something even better: Mother 1, Mother 2, and Mother 3 all on the Switch!
Moses Burch eh that’s a bit of a stretch you can’t expect developers not to be paid for recreating this wonderful game. Plus most free games have a LOT of micro transactions and that’s not something that I want in earthbound.
@@danielpound9012 they won't ever make a mother 2 they cancelled the making of mother 2
This man will never cease to impress me for how hard he works. It’s just insane how he is able to do so much in so little time and still find it in him to re-complete games he had already done. Stay strong man, you’re the GOAT.
The Mother series... some of the best comedy, drama, and stakes of any series out there!
Yes it is Super Vidya Brothers
Better than Undertale
yet one of the worst actual RPGs ever. Its so bad its embarrassing. People end up actually paying it and immediately find out why its not that well loved beyond its tiny cult fanbase

"...Earthbound strikes a perfect balance of being emotional and funny. There's no cynicism anywhere, and I love the game's earnestness."
You have just encapsulated exactly what I love about Earthbound's tone. It has a weird and wonderful sense of humor, genuine moments of dread, and a complete emotional sincerity that I've seen so rarely in modern media. In a cultural landscape dominated by the irreverent weight of Irony, Earthbound is a breath of fresh air.
I think the perfect example of this comes from the butterflies. When you catch them, they heal psychic points. But they do so by setting the mind of the characters at ease, which is important for psionics. Taken together, though, it creates a scene that is fascinating for what it means. Ness is reinvigorating his mental state by dropping whatever he's doing - even if it was completely Serious Business - and doing one of the most Kid things you can do: _chase a butterfly_ .
That, right there, is mind-expanding. It is sublime. It is...so perfectly Earthbound.

I just started playing EarthBound for the first time today, it's great so far
There's a fan translation for mother 3. If you end up liking 2 a lot, trust me, you'll want to play 3. It's an even more amazing game.
@@sasaki8765 thats debatable, they both tell their story in super different ways and play out differently. Both are amazing tho
i started with 3, which is what encouraged me to try earthbound
took a whilefor me to fully get used to it started may two years ago and finally beat it at the end of this january
@@Jqcksremmurd i would say that m3 is actually better in almost every way. Gameplay added fun little implementation + the way story was handled actually hooked me up much better than first one. I can't tell what it was exactly, but i think the tone of the story and overall passing was better. Where M3 actually showed me something personal Earthbound start is kinda spontaneous with chosen one trope where exposition dump explained to you why you even should go on this journey. M3 on the other hand felt much more personal, even Claus actually had some character. So while i do get why most people prefer Earthbound (nostalgia, art, overall dream and child-like feeling of adventure, unaccessibility of M3 for a long time) I really think M3 is better in every way. Not that it make Earthbound bad or anything.
Such an incredible game and journey Earthbound is. My favorite moments are the times where Ness drinks the "drugged" tea and his conscious talks to him about his journey until that moment and encourages him to keep going
I literally beat this game for the first time ever last night. What amazing cosmic timing on your part. And what an incredible, wonderfully weird game.
Same lol
Play Mother 3
Liking just on the Bird *Whistle* bit. 10/10 would bird *whistle* again.
We back out here with earthbound!
Definitely Nick Olivia
So glad you used StephenVlogs footage. Perfect usage!
To be fair, Stephen is THE earthbound/mother guy
@@strangething7379 I thought that was Chuggaa?
@@KurosakiYukigo not sure about chugga but Stephen started his youtube channels to make earthbound/mother videos with his Ninten Speaks series on his old channel and has made several friends whom regularly appear in the vlogs on Starmen.net. He's made his love for the series VERY apparent, so I and probably many other others associate him with the channel
@@strangething7379 chuggaa started his channel with a lp of earthbound and has a huge mother series shrine, sure he doesn't have as much general footage of earthbound on his channel, and is known as a Xenoblade head now, but that's more about his content rather then his fandom of this series, vlogging can be a huge range based on any content you want and can show a LOT more behind the scenes such as just fandoming over a series, while lping locks you into a series, unless you up and leave that content which can feel like a kick in the teeth for fans
Sean Harrison They are both the earthbound guy. They both started with earthbound and met each other through an earth bound website. Stephen met his wife and many of friends through an earthbound website. Stephen and Chugga are both giant earthbound fans.
I had the privilege of coming across this game and buying it brand new when I was 10 years old. It immediately became and still is one of my favorite games of all time. It's so amazing to see this game finally getting the reputation it deserves. Most of my life I had never come across anyone else who had played it and it warms my heart to see it having such a huge fan base now!!!
Same here I turned 10 the day it came out!
Okay you miss the REAL ending when you bring Paula to your house, if you do that she will become your girlfriend.
Also you need ALL the photos to have the complete credits and not just a black screen.
Even if you don't take her home she is already considered Ness's girlfriend. Paula's dad says Ness can "continue dating Paula".
@@MilesAway epic
@@MilesAway I think he says "seeing", not dating, but its okay i beat this game twice without knowing that.
@@videosalpaso5323 He says dating. I've played both endings countless times.
What do you mean by "not just a black screen"? Are you referring to the cutscene that plays after the credits end? Because I thought you get that cutscene regardless of whether you got all the photos or not?
Playing "Smiles and Tears" is cheating. 😭😭😭😭😭
I miss you.
Me to ArcaJ
Loved that Shoutout to StephenVlog! I'm glad you used his footage.
The thing I love the most about this Game is even if you never played it, like I didn't until a few years ago, the Music still feels nostalgic, like whenever you hear it you are taken back to your childhood or a peaceful moment with your friends, its one of those Soundtracks I would love to have a Record of.
Yes! My favorite game of all time! Thanks Jirard!
@Vanessa Monika Let the man prefer EarthBound. I prefer it too so you're outnumbered.
@Vanessa Monika Sorry man. That's your opinion and I respect it. You're probably right actually. This stupid 13 year old just prefers to be weirded out by playing EarthBound than cry by playing Mother 3.
you need to play more games if this is your favorite lol
I always thought Ness’s Dad was like that bc a lot of parents in the 90s started getting divorced
EarthBound is my favorite game. of. all. time.
I love that this comment section has so many people that say EarthBound's their favorite game. It's mine too.
This is one of three games I complete on an annual basis, the other two being Crono Trigger and Shining Force 2 and has been since the days I first discovered roms. Love it and love you my dude. May the beard be strong with you.

I see Earthbound and am reminded how completely overrated it is.
This game changed my life. I played it for the first time summer of 2017. My buddy has a copy and we played it for literally 8 hours non stop. No break. It made me feel like the way I did playing games as a kid. Long story short, my son’s name is Ness!
Pū having an existential crisis is a really good way to describe his character.
I like the arrow backflip for it staying on Complete it. Love your show. Keep up the great work!
So underrated. This is my favorite RPG ever. The story had a major impact on me. Love it ♥
Edwin Evangelista by this point it is overrated
@@lh9591 No it isnt
I was lucky enough to play this game when it was new, and it was definitely a highlight of my childhood. As well as Earthbound has aged, there's something about playing a game in the context of the time period it was developed in that just adds something irreplaceable to the experience. And I'm so very happy I got to experience it.
This was a very fun episode to see you take on such a charming, weird game that was one of the hallmark's of my childhood.
I'm glad you enjoyed this quirky game and have given it good exposure to hopefully widen it's audience.
Great video!
I had the scratch and sniff guidebook... ooo man I still remember a couple of those smells... They were terrible I should have kept it. Being a kid in the 90s I didn't care too much after I beat the game

Just finished this game, its so freaking good! I loved the ending so much! Getting to walk back home was really neat!
7:15 "It's a genuinely funny moment."
Over all these years, I still haven't gotten over Buzz Buzz's death.
One really neat thing about the game is that when taking pictures, whatever you had with you on the time will be present on the final picture. This includes having all 4 party members, teddy bears, flying men, riding the bicycle, mushrooms, possessed status ghost, Dungeon Man, and even unconscious/diamondized party members. It's a great touch that not only showcases your progress upon completing the game, but also various things you've encountered along the way. People keep saying Ness's Father isn't there, but I feel like the main implication is that he WANTS to be there, but has a very demanding job. He's able to send so much money over because the job pays very well, but requires him to basically glue himself to the workstation. However, he will make time to talk to Ness whenever he can, because goddamn it he's still a dad and Ness is still his son.

Fun facts about Earthbound. If u get enough cookies to fill up your inventory before u fight the first starman. When u get sound stone u won't have it use up space in your inventory but it still records the melodies. If u use the d pad during teleport A use u can control your path. If u wanna do the rock candy glitch u can put rock candy last in your inventory buy sugar packets and during battle use the rock candy and it only uses the sugar packets not the rock candy and when u level up you'll gain mass amounts of HP and PP. Never go over 250 a stat or it resets. U can kill giygas without praying.
I imagine that the 1/128 challenge would be easier if you had a certain charming young boy from Arizona on-side as a lucky charm. After all, IIRC he got the Sword of Kings pretty quickly in his Let's RePlay of the game, due to his unnatural Luck stat.
Also, my headcanon is that Jeff sounds English. Possibly with a northern accent, since I also read Doctor Andonuts' lines in the voice of the late Peter Sallis, aka Wallace from Wallace & Gromit.
