  • Allen Iverson doesn't expect his fractured right ring finger to feel better anytime soon.
Taking time off down the stretch, with the Denver Nuggets fighting for a playoff spot, simply isn't an option.
So, he's learned to accept the pain.
Not that the finger affected him Friday night. Iverson scored 28 points, going 9-of-12 from the floor, as the Nuggets blew out the Toronto Raptors 137-105 for their fifth straight win at home.
The Denver guard hit seven straight attempts before missing a 3-pointer early in the third quarter. He also made all 10 of his free throws.
"It felt OK before the game," Iverson said. "Now, it feels that much worse. It's throbbing like a heartbeat."
Iverson, who hurt his finger against San Antonio a week ago, slips on a brace after every game per doctors orders.
"If I didn't wear this brace to keep it straight after every game, there's a chance it will get worse and I'll have to get a pin," he said.
Yet he refuses to wear anything on the finger in a game.
"I'm just real superstitious," Iverson said.
Nuggets coach George Karl would like to get Iverson some rest, but there's no time, not with the Nuggets currently on the outside glancing into the playoffs. They trail Golden State for the last spot.
"I don't think we can lose a [player] because of an injury the rest of the way," Karl said. "It's the time of year where we have to play like it's a playoff circumstance. Everybody is hurting a little bit -- A.I. is probably at the top of the list."
The Nuggets' 137-point output is the second-most points the team has scored this season. They still have the NBA high mark for the season with a 138-point performance in a win at Seattle on Feb. 27.
But Iverson was more impressed with Denver's defensive performance on Friday. The Nuggets held the Raptors to just 3-of-12 shooting from 3-point range. Toronto came in with the top percentage in the league at 41 percent.
"If we come in and do what we what we got to do defensively, nine times out of 10 we're going to take care of business," Iverson said. "We weren't trying to beat them by 30, we just wanted to beat them convincingly."
The Nuggets got their point across.
"Last two games, we're not guarding anybody," said Sam Mitchell, whose team has now dropped three straight to start a five-game road trip. "We're not guarding anybody, and if you're not guarding anybody, you're going to come out of the game."
Carmelo Anthony finished with 22 points, and Marcus Camby had 17 points and 10 rebounds for his 24th double-double of the season.
Chucky Atkins came off the bench to finish with 17 points, including five 3-pointers. Atkins has missed a majority of the season after surgery to repair a right groin/abdominal strain. The Nuggets are trying to work him into the rotation.
"He's a pro," Karl said. "He knows how to play, has a sense for the game."
With a 30-point lead heading into final quarter, the starters were given the rest of the night off -- except Iverson. He played moments into the quarter before being subbed out.
The break would've been nice, but he doesn't think his finger will fully heal until this summer.
"It's going to continue to bother me," he said. "But I'm not going to make any excuses, whether I play good or bad. I won't blame it on the finger."
The Raptors were without Chris Bosh, who missed his eighth straight game because of a sore right knee. Anthony Parker scored 19 points and reserve Carlos Delfino added 16.
"We were nonexistent today and Denver did whatever they wanted offensively," Parker said.
The Nuggets scored 79 points in the first half, the most Toronto has allowed for a half in franchise history. The previous high was 78 which the Los Angeles Clippers scored on the Raptors in the second half on March 13, 1998.
The Raptors also allowed a team-record 44 points in the first quarter.
"This game was fun," said Camby, a former Raptors player. "You always want to beat your former teams, and the guys did a great job."
    Game notes
The Nuggets are 13-2 against the Eastern Conference at the Pepsi Center this season. ... Before the game, Toronto announced it had filed a statement of claim against the Spanish Basketball Federation for nonpayment of insurance related Jorge Garbajosa's injury. Garbajosa underwent more surgery on his left leg and ankle on Dec. 11 in Baltimore.

If A.I. comes back from his injury they have to led him be Allen Iverson again and don't let him rot at the wing without the basketball. Curry needs to let Iverson play the way he can be dangerous. We all know what he could do with the ball in his hands and that's why we all love him.

Detroit is completly abusing Iversons abilities! He is that type of a player that has to have the ball to dominate, so that he can attack the rim and either score or dish the ball to an open teammate. That's how he's played his entire career and that's how he has to be used.
But it seems that curry isn't recordgnizing this. A.I. is not a second Rip Hamilton, who comes off screens and catch and shoots.

I would of had loved it. It would have been a great honor to have played against A.I. in a person's life, not mentioning getting crossed up by him. I bet it would feel just great. ;D

If AI kept passing the way he passed in this game he would've had a championship ring.

he is having some really bad back problems. he orignally played thru the pain because the doctors told him that the pain should eventually go away. However when the pain continued to bother him, he went to a doctor in dc. ( DC STAND UP!!!) and hat doctor told him that he needs to sit out for a minimum of 3 weeks

If the league was just not against him or that d'stern guy and media, he would still be AI in detorit and maybe still be playing till today and still the 3rd in nba history in points per. I hate how that d'stern and media make it face that AI is declining even though he's not declining. I hate the way how they blacklisted that incredibly talented player! He's the best player on his era!

+nat zy What even happened in Detroit and Memphis? He was still so good when he was there, and to me it's also surprising no one tried to sign him after his last stint with the Philly. I mean he had a season where he didnæt perform up to his standard, but no one would when you consideri how his last 2 seasons had been like.

Well that's the point, his last 2 season was trash because he was being trash. Its amusing that he wasn't a starting five and his time was reduced. How would his last 2 season be good considering on the circumstances he's having. I mean he average 26ppg 7apg last season in denver and when he was traded in detroit he was bench? Well that's interesting and something is really wrong. Btw after that year on detroit his coach there was fired.

      nat zy Yes, I know..
From what I've read I understand Detroit played a different style of basketball, but if AI was that much a misfit to the system they shouldn't have bought him in the first place. They must've known about his playstyle.
And what's worst is he was actually playing well in the start of his Detroit-contract. He was still living up to his reputation and hype and his 3-pointer and assist numbers were good.

so billups has get the nuggets out tha first round? no he hasn't and he won't. The nuggets will loose to L.A. or to San Antonio. So they aren't any better than last year with A.I.
Iverson has shown it very often in his career that he he is able to win ball games. He was in the finals with philly. He has played over 70 playoff games. And he has had 50 win season in philly and denver. The only thing that didn't won is a ring. Beside that he has won everything u can win in this league.

people are quick to jump on band wagons and AI has never been liked so if he's not playin good, people are quick to say he's washed up but forget that detroit has been playing a certain way for years and of course will not change their style of play during the season, I say wait till the offseason and see if they will figure sumthin out by next year (if they keep AI)

  • @GNugget151
    @GNugget151 15 років тому

um what have the nuggets done with Billups.....nothing, the nuggets got to the playoffs every year before Iverson got there so he didnt do anything but keep them a playoff team. The nuggets played no defense collectively and thats why they lost in the first round and they still dont play d. Yeah, detroit has been to 5 or 6 ecfs but only hav one ring to show for that, they lost most of those ecfs. If you watched the video he was passing and scoring and playin a little d..give him some time in D.

I loved A.I. in philly and I really liked him with denver. But I hate what detroit is doing to Iversons career. They are really limiting his abillities. Curry is such a bad coach. I really hate him. An now what A.I. to come off the bench. What's that. I mean A.I. is not a bench player. He supposed to be the go to guy not the 6th man.

r u serious...this 08-09 iverson isnt tha iverson from philly or sumtin hes been gettin his looks he aint like he use to, detroit play a team oriented offense not iverson dribble'n 97% of time lookin for his then passin if double comes...detroits been to what 5 or 6 straight ecf, iverson couldnt get nuggets out tha first round and when hes gone they a better team with billups
iverson great individual(top 3 of generation hands down)...not great for teams exactly
