  • Iverson dishes 15 assists on top of 44 points in one-sided affair
    Allen Iverson feels right at home just in time for the Denver Nuggets' big road trip.
    Iverson scored 44 points and dished out 15 assists in leading the Nuggets to their fourth straight win, a 131-107 blowout of the Phoenix Suns on Saturday night.
    Carmelo Anthony augmented Iverson's night by adding 29 points in the duo's best performance since the holiday trade that brought them together three months ago.
    Now, the surging Nuggets hit the road for five straight games and eight of their next nine.
    "This does a lot for our confidence," Iverson said. "To win four games in a row, you get a certain swagger about your game."
    The Nuggets have quite the saunter thanks to their red-hot superstars.
    Iverson made 16-of-22 shots from the field and Anthony was 13-for-20. And many of the shots were alley-oop dunks and rim-rattling jams that were the product of the Nuggets' suddenly stingy defense.
    "They made every shot in the world," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "They are hard to handle when Anthony and Iverson are coming at you like that. They are hard to handle on any night."
    At one point, both Iverson and Anthony were 12-for-16 from the floor.
    "When you're in a zone, it doesn't matter if guys are on you or anything," Iverson said. "It just feels good. It just feels like throwing rocks in an ocean."
    The Suns have lost twice -- by a combined 46 points -- since their 129-127 double-overtime win at Dallas on Wednesday night. They lost to Detroit 105-83 Friday night, which D'Antoni blamed on emotional exhaustion.
    "We're still feeling it," Steve Nash said. "It was a big win. We have to get back to the way we were before that game."
    The Suns, who got 25 points from Leandro Barbosa, never led in this one and fell behind by 38 points entering the fourth quarter against a team that they might face in the first round of the playoffs next month.
    "We didn't have any energy," Nash said. "They played with a lot of heart and energy and we weren't. So I didn't see any way we were going to get back into the game."
    Anthony had 19 points by halftime and Iverson had 13 points and 10 assists at the break as the Nuggets took a 70-44 lead into the locker room. Iverson's drive to the basket made it 111-73 heading into the fourth quarter.
    "That's another confidence booster for us," Anthony said. "To beat a team like that. You know one of the top teams, if not the top team. To beat a team like that is really a great deal for us. So we can take that momentum from this game and from the previous three games and take it on the road with us."
    The Suns had won 24 of 28 road games and had gone 9-1 against Denver in their past 10 meetings. They trailed 37-25 after one quarter and it only got worse from there in what was easily the Nuggets' best game of the season.
    The Nuggets shot 68 percent in the first half and the Suns shot just 33 percent.
    "They played great," D'Antoni said. "We're in a little bit of a funk right now. Discombobulated. We have the regroup a little bit."
    Denver has struggled all season to get any cohesion because of injuries, illnesses, trades and suspensions. The Nuggets have started to put it together lately, and this was the night it finally all came together for them.
    Anthony drew the foul and some of the loudest cheers of the night when his third attempt at a putback resulted in the whistle, and his two free throws made it 109-73 in the waning seconds of the third quarter.
    Iverson said the Nuggets knew they'd have to start quickly and play relentless defense.
    "That team can blow you out and they can score in bunches," he said.
    For once, it was the opposition that did both.

    and how unappreciated is marion, this guy is an anomaly in that he can guard the 4 spot all the way down to the 1 spot and do a pretty good job on all of them plus he blocks shots, gets a bunch of steals, can handle the ball, solid scorer. he does everything he's easily an all-star player and plus the nba picked the wrong guy, raja bell, for 1st team defense they should've gone with marion. raja bell should'nt even have made any of those teams even though he's a solid defender.

    When AI is scoring at will and getting high assists he becomes INVINCIBLE! Honestly that's where his true potential was .... making the assists. The scoring is already natural with him. I wished he molded his game around making more assists!

    I'm not blaming Horry, Amare and Diaw both came off of the bench. So did Duncan and Bowen in the 2nd quarter of that game during the James Jones altercation. But neither of them got suspended. Don't bash the assistants, they went for D'antoni first because they thought he was going for Horry, when he was going for Nash. Then by that time it was almost too late, but they did a great job.

    Phoenix came back from a 10 point Spurs lead in the 4th quart in San Antonio playing the way the spurs wanted it to win by 6. He's the best finisher in the game this season and can score big in the 4th quarter. You can't say the suns would play worse without Amare and Boris. The suns can outplay the spurs at anytime because they have more weapons, more playmakers, more scorers and a defense that can hold down the spurs while scoring on the other end.

    Amare is probably the best finisher in the NBA, and all we had in the 2nd half was Kurt Thomas who tried and played well, but made mistakes and missed layups etc because he's not used to being a finisher like that. We easily could've had a 20+ win if we could just score in the 2nd half...we missed our top scorer and our 2nd best playmaker.

    a lot of nash's buckets come from layups off the pick & roll & wide open jumpers(when matched up on a big)cuz when amare rolls the defense HAS to zone in on him, if they don't it's a dunk, so really that wide open lane that opens up for nash is created by amare rolling to the basket & the defense having to zone in on him. plus a lot of times he's matched up on a big off the pick & every guard in the league can score easily on a big.

    Iverson is a beast, i might give it top 20. The only other Top 20's in the NBA right now are Shaq and Kobe. Duncan and D-wade might sneak into the top 30 as well. If Gilbert continues where he left off berfore his injury (about 28 ppg 7ish apg) Then he gets into top 40. because those stats are Iversons CARREER stats.

    @Kdaddy61987 I have to add while not having a point guard was a big reason why the Warriors were so bad in 09, another big reason they fell apart was that the franchise was undergoing major problems with Nelson and the players at the end of the 08 season, the off season and most of the 09 season. I'm a Warriors fan,a disgruntled one but still faithful. Curry is a star.

    I said if we win in San Antonio we'll have advantage...not automatic. We'll have home-court for game 7 where we've already beat them by 20 points this series and would've easily beat them by double figures in our last game if we weren't missing 2 of our best players.

    07/08 i wouldnt be surprised if the nugs won 60 games and ai led the league in assists. it wouldnt surprise me at all, very talented team and iverson is smart and wants to win more than anything else. he will work real hard and do it cuz they got a good shot at a ring wit all the talent inside and out around him and melo. melo will be the scorer up around 28 a night but iversons gonna run that point 20ppg & 10 apg go for that ring AI.

    Amare is better than hall of fame talent, he's capable of being the MVP in a few years...he's one of the best players in the league already. Only thing stopping him is the surgery he'll have to have about every 3 years...amare's scoring might go up, but his fg percentage would drop atleast 10% and he would use many more possessions to score instead all of the easy dunks he and Marion get from Nash. Stoudemire and Marion are 2nd and 3rd in the WHOLE LEAGUE in dunks!

  • @kreg
    @kreg 17 років тому

    Well it's better to be able to play with injuries than not playing at all...that way you have options. The suns almost went all the way last year without anyone big guys because of Nash controlling everything. Sure Boris and Shawn and Raja were all good but it was Nash leading the way...and they almost made it. This year the Suns have Amare and Kurt with basically the same team as last year and will hopefully go all the way!

  • @UR2H

    @Kdaddy61987 Also the Philly team that made the finals would have been nothing without Iverson's scoring. No won else on that team could score. A team that won 56 games was barely a .500 team in 10 games without him. He won MVP over Duncan and Shaq that season for a reason.

  • @UR2H
    @UR2H 14 років тому +1

    @Kdaddy61987 And I agree that defense is important. That's why Philly missed the playoffs the following season in 05-06. They went from a relatively respectable defensive team to one of the worst. Bench was also very thin that season. AI left in the beginning of the 06-07 season and Miller came in. Philly missed the playoffs that season as well. Iverson posted 7.4 and 7.9apg in 2 seasons at point with Philly. That's better than any of Miller's assist averages in Philly. Plus AI could score.

Ai was there scorer and who in the nba wouldnt have loved his position, play half ass defense and shoot like crazy. Ai is alot like monta ellis yet ellis isnt getting this same love your giving a guy whos only thing was scoring on a team who got to the finals because of defense.

    Well considering when the suns started playing pretty well in game 2 they won by 20 points. Game 3 the suns missed about 8-10 layups and dunks, which would be about 16-20 pts and there were many reach-ins that the refs never called which enabled the spurs to get alot of steals off of Nash.

    btw the way since a everyone is talking so much ai game right now, this was the suns back to back game and 3rd game in 4 nights. All on the road, so big ups to denver for getting this win in the reg season against a tired suns team. Lastly denver won 1 game vs the spurs in the playoffs and was spanked the other 4 here as phoenix was the only team to challenge the spurs this year. So big ups to ai and ai fans for getting 1 win.

    @Kdaddy61987 I have many Warriors games recorded from last season and I can attest that Curry like Nash is an incredible passer. He is also a very good scorer. He scored 30+ 8 times as a rookie. His season high was 42 which almost came on a triple double. His 2nd high was 36 which actually did come on a triple double. This kid is no joke. The Warriors were basically a d-league team last season and won just as many games with Curry running the point as they did the season before.

    Gabe- Are we talking about Iverson being better alltime or this season? Because Nash has just started getting very good the past couple seasons. Iverson has always been a big scorer. 5 years ago, yeah he was better. The past 2 seasons and this one: no way. He's faster and a little better on defense...Nash shoots 8% better this season and a boatload more assists and each assist is 2-3 pts.

    Also even if Denver trades Melo they're obviously going to get some sort of quality player in return. They should still sneak in no matter what happens. So it's basically Denver, Portland, New Orleans, Memphis, Phoenix, even throw late blooming Houston in, and the Warriors as the teams fighting for those 3 spots. Warriors have the biggest hill to climb. i just don't see it. It's possible though, 07 was proof that it can happen I guess but its a long shot.

    @Kdaddy61987 I like your attitude. Optimism is all I've been living with the last 15 years as a Warriors fan. We had 07 but damn if that wasn't the biggest tease in my life as a sports fan. I've practically watched every game this season and seriously unless they can truly all stay healthy, they won't be able to put together a significant run.

  • @Kdaddy61987
    @Kdaddy61987 13 років тому

    @UR2H you can say that about alot of players, all players have similiarites. Also another point is that nash had great passing highlights to start his career and when he was witht he mavs they made the western conference finals tied 1-1 with the spurs. Then dirk got hurt which is another story, but steve has been great since the start. Nash has always been a impact player, when he first went to dallas the change started with him and dirk. Nothing has for the warriors.

    I NEVER said to "plug-in" Amare and have won by 20 easy...I said San Antonio had contested shots and with Amare in they would've been even harder to make...and down the stretch instead of 6 players you'll have 8 and you'll have the best finisher in the NBA down the stretch who can score so instead of trying to hold the spurs off you can score alot down the stretch and therefore win the game instead of blowing a 16-point lead and losing.

LAst year there were a few games that were close and he had some big turnovers and i remeber 1 game where it was a out of bound play and he got a open 3 look. He missed it and turned around in frustration. ellis got the rebound and looked to curry for a respot curry wasnt ready ellis took a fadeaway 3 to tie and missed. I'm not plugging anything in. If amare was in instead of Barbosa our defense would've been even better...sure the spurs would've played differently but the reason they weren't making shots wasn't just because they were "feeling sorry" for phoenix. But the spurs were struggling and the only reason the suns lost was because they were struggling to score in the 2nd half, because they only had 6 players and not enough playmakers and scorers. That's where Amare can come in and finish the game.

    @Kdaddy61987 So far I've liked what I've seen from Curry. He's developing quite nicely. I know he isn't on quite on Nash's level but Nash wasn't the player he has been the last half decade when he first came in the league. There's no reason Curry shouldn't keep getting better. His IQ and skill set are unbelievable at his age. I also like how Ellis is back to his old self from 07 and 08. Utilizing that unstoppable midrange and with his quickness back he's been really tough to stop.

  • @kreg
    @kreg 17 років тому

    Lookup their record without him this season. The reason the suns had a team shooting percentage of just under .500 was because of Nash. If you trade Nash for Iverson...suns would get no more than 50 wins and wouldn't have a chance against the spurs. You need more than just scoring to be a good team. Iverson can score, but the suns are filled with scorers. They need someone who fills in the gap between scoring and making sure everythings right.

    @Kdaddy61987 I agree with the 8 man team/rotation thing. Injuries devastated that team but they still made it tough for teams to get W's against them. D-league Reggie Williams is a legit find though. BTW Curry is not hotheaded at all. He's a real cool and collective player. Plays a lot like Steve Nash but with better defense. Him and Ellis were actually most productive backcourt in all the NBA with combined points, rebounds, steals and assists.

    Amare's shooting percentage wouldn't be 62% like it is now without Nash...he would have to earn every single point. Allstars are voted in by fans, and the fans voted many people over every suns player. And when Nash is gone, every suns player will be worse off, and they'll get even less votes.

    @Kdaddy61987 This recent stretch of games against good teams is kinda telling me the Warriors are still not ready for a playoff contention. Obviously injuries with Lee and currently with Curry doesn't help but the last two weeks was an important series of games where they failed miserably. Maybe they can put together a run once Curry gets back and Udoh gets healthier. At least they have an easier match-up tonight at home. Intriguing too. Lee and Love....

    @Kdaddy61987 Iverson only played 15 of the 23 games before getting traded to Denver. Philly was 5-10 with AI in the lineup. 0-8 without him. The season before Miller was a Philly, Iverson went 35-37 which isn't that bad considering Dalembert missed 16 games. Willie Green an important bench player practically missed the entire season. The next season Miller goes 29-28 with a healthy roster. Not that much better.

    @Kdaddy61987 I know Curry isn't as good as Nash. Nash is one of my favorite players, and it's unbelievable that he kept getting better with age. What I meant was, that they have a similar skill set and while they not the most athletic guys they still get it done. Nash has unbelievable court vision and Curry isn't at that level yet. Curry's passing, ball handling(minus rookie mistakes) and shooting are all great at his stage. He may not be as good as Nash but he sure does play like him.

    Phoenix definitely should've won game 3...they outplayed San Antonio and just by the bad calls alone...without them would've been enough to beat the spurs. Then all of the layups they missed...they could've won by 20 points back to back.

    actually j-kidd is still great, not as good as he used to be, but he is still great, have you been watching basketball? he's had 2 triple-doubles these playoffs with about 1/2 the weapons that nash has LOL! and if you knew anything about basketball you'd know that amare has HALL-OF-FAME TALENT!!! and you'd also know that if nash left, amare's scoring would actually go up due to him getting the ball more and having to score more.

    about last year in the playoffs if you'll remember kobe was actually playing with his teammates as a team, they just couldn't get 1 board in game 6 & therefore lost. & the suns did have amare injured last year & k thomas but look at what they did without them, a testament to how much weapons the suns have, plus your comparison is silly amare & k thomas weren't playing last year with injuries, luke walton, kwame, lamar were all playing with injuries in the playoffs so they don't compare.

    @Kdaddy61987 The shorthanded and thin benched Sixers were almost a .500 team at 35-37 with AI running the point in 06. In 07 the Sixers were 29-28 with Miller at point and a healthy cast. I don't see the 1/3 and 1/2 disparity. Looks pretty even to me. Also AI made the playoffs without Snow and Mutombo in 05. They lost Mckie, Ratliff and otheres. Not just Snow and Mutombo. BTW the Sixers were doing just fine before Mutombo arrived with a 1/3 of the season remaining in 01.

    Steve nash is a better scorer because his FG% is higher so that means when he shoots he makes it more often, AI scores more cuz he shoots more, if they shot the same amount, steve nash would score more.

    Denver could've beat the spurs this year if AI took less shots. Hate to pin it all on one player but he needs to shoulder a LOT of the blame for their first round playoff exit. There's no reason why he should be taking more shots than Carmelo

    @Kdaddy61987 Warriors have been a completely different team without Lee. You're right, Lee brings that inside presence the Warriors lack. His post game isn't the greatest but he can finish plays and gets a lot of 2nd chance buckets and opportunities. I like Biedrins but he lacks offense, minus the monster game he had the other night. Plus he's always in foul trouble. Can't be effective on the bench. While it's still early, if healthy very plausible that they make the playoffs.

    Yeah the lakers had injuries. The suns had injuries last season but still came back with their small lineup to win the last 3 games against LA. About the rings...Kobe had Shaq, Fisher and Horry.

    Yeah the refs missed the quick slash by Marion on Ginobili. That's 1 play that is very hard to catch. Refs rarely ever see when that happens. But there were countless fouls the refs never called.

    @Kdaddy61987 The Wolves play in the west. The Sixers play in the east. When or how did they ever meet in the conference finals? Also the Wolves have only made the conference finals once where they lost to the Lakers. That was the season Lakers lost to Detroit in the finals. So I don't know what your talking about with that.

    @UR2H man you see how bad the warriors are playing without lee? To me thats the difference right there, nash makes everyone better simply cause hes the best pg in the nba and maybe best offensive pg of all time. Curry and ellis are struggling without a big who can make plays around the basket. I hope they make the playoffs cause i already picked them in my pre-season draft. Curry is nice but hes no where close yet.

    @Kdaddy61987 AI moved to point in the 04-05 season and they made the playoffs that season. Eric Snow last season in Philly was the very season before and started all 82 games. They ended up missing the playoffs after 5 years straight in the post season. Why? Because AI missed half the season. Well change of coaching staff with Larry Brown leaving played a part as well.
