I met Jamal Lewis in Vegas this past September. I shared that we had the same birthday and he took a pic with me. I had waited a long time to meet him. Even today he is a MAN. Probably 5’11 and built like wolverine. Imagine him at 240lbs and fast and tough…nasty! Very nice guy and cool. Thanks for the awesome memory and pics Jamal! Lifetime Ravens fan.
Jamal Lewis helped bring that smash mouth football to the Ravens. Just look at this years Ravens, they’re also a smash mouth team. Their offensive line is the best in the league and their depth at the running game is deep.
Dr. Mantis Toboggan, M.D. I do t see a smash mouth running team in the Ravens this year. They may be a run first, read option, but Tennessee this year with Derrick Henry is close to what we used to be. Today the Ravens run the ball with finesse and strategy requiring many variations on formations. In many ways, it’s better than what we used to do.
Matthew Bittenbender - A team that rushed for over 3,000 yards combined isn’t smash mouth?! Have you watched the Ravens offensive line this season? Go back and watch the game footage from their game with New England this season and watch how they broke New England down by running the ball in the very first quarter.
Dr. Mantis Toboggan, M.D. listen, doc, you might (MIGHT) be able to call it smashmouth football compared to a pass happy league with defenses that are fast and agile rather than beefy. But this is not like the Jamal Lewis days. Because the Ravens abused a Patriots defense weak on stopping the run (as we saw again last week vs the Titans) and a shared rushing load of over 2000 yds does not a smashmouth make. Nearly half of those 2000+ yards came from our QB who is not smashing mouths. Lewis has 2066 on his own in ‘03. Ingram has been a physical runner this year, but he is no Jamal Lewis or Derrick Henry. Henry is as close to Lewis you can get in today’s NFL. So your definition of smashmouth football is a bit generous if we’re comparing old school Ravens to new school Ravens. If we’re comparing it to today’s teams then you may have an argument, but if you watch the running styles back then where they initiated contact with defensive players then it’s not even a debate.
Matthew Bittenbender - and why do you think the Patriots defense line was weak last week against the Titans? Because the Ravens exposed it with their smash mouth style; starting with their oversized and powerful offensive line. Just because one man isn’t getting the load of all the running doesn’t take away the fact that the offensive line inflicts their mark on opposing defenses with their smash mouth run game. Their run game is deep, and deeper than any other team in the league.
Dr. Mantis Toboggan, M.D. the Ravens didn’t expose it, their style just matched up well enough with them. Other teams started demonstrate that NE as weak up the middle before us but lacked the wherewithal to defeat them. The part that I think that we diverge on is the definition itself. The Ravens are comparatively less of a smashmouth team than Lewis’ day. Today they’re more dynamic than they are punishing. It’s more deception than running right over you. That part stands out when comparing old and new games.
11:52 I remember this game. I followed his stats game by game all year. Remember the 295 game too. This was when I first started being obsessed with the Ravens and following their every movement
@@kingtazzzz1280 me too bro. Such good memories. Those early to mid 2000 teams! Something special. 2006 was awesome too with McNair. Then Flacco came along. Now Lamar. Ans great defense the whole time. We are lucky as Ravens fans.
Sincere question, how old are you? Because you look like you're barely in your 20's in your pic. Just wondering htf you were following his stats when you were still in diapers..
Hell yea man loved that 2000-2004 era Ravens...even with the abysmal QB situation. Grback, boller, Anthony Wright, Jeff Blake...thank God we got McNair for 2006.
I grew up in the 90's and was grew up in the household of 9er fans (which I am still to this day). We only had one TV growing up so Sundays were always football days. That being said, I didn't watch the NFL as closely until the early 2000's. I must say it was a pleasure watching all these players play the way they did. I watched Jamal Lewis's journey to 2k, Payton Hillis's one year wonder, Dante Halls crazy human joystick moves, Hester running the first kick return for a touchdown, NOLA winning their first superbowl a year after Katrina, Terrell Owens antics from hitting the Cowboys center star (twice) and being a Cowboy. so many to name, so little time. the 2000's- to now will always be fond memories of great plays and players. Thank you NFL Throwbacks for letting me relive the good and the bad :)

Simply a beast... One of the best r/b of all time. So underrated. I hope he is doing ok these days. I saw him being interviewed a few years back and he had severe memory loss. One of the best to ever do it.
He still never was 100% after his first turn ACL at Tennessee. Than a second ACL a few years in the league. The year he came out in college at UT. He was like something you never saw before. Watching the guy live on TV or in person was special. If he didn't have 2 terrible knee injuries who knows what he could have done. Maybe been 1 of the best ever to play RB
I never knewv he tore his ACL in college too. Even if it wasn't the same knee that he tore in the pros, it makes his career even more impressive in hindsight.
He, Ricky Williams and earl Campbell we’re scary as hell. All cut from the same cloth. But Ricky and Jamal Lewis were scary to tackle because they would pick up speed so fast with all that bulk sheesh idk who ran harder him or Ricky

Lol NFL has been really good at preserving their games history as well as NFL Films stuff. NBA/NHL all you can find is grainy footage and zero extra content like this video, or micd up, A Football Life, NFL Films Presents, Turning Point etc. We're pretty luck as NFL fans.
Yes. Most films from the 21st century were shot on 35mm film, but there is some argument on how high of a resolution that translates to digitally. It depends a lot on a variety of factors. A 1080p video has, by definition 2,073,600 pixels per frame. 35mm film, by the most conservative of estimates, equates to 4 to 16 million pixels per frame. This means that even when we get to 4K being the standard, 35mm will still be able to be upscaled to fit the display.
Big River Records it was the second Super bowl in HD (the first being the Titans-Rams game a year earlier on ABC HD), Kevin Harlan called the CBS HD broadcast which is why you hear him in this video, while Gumbel and Simms were only on SD.
@Luis Mercado No, Peterson was drafted in this league before the transition to a passing league. When he broke 2K it was still a running league. CJ2K had a 2K year just before him.
@@thabruhfrom9444 wtf are you talking about? Chris Johnson 2k year was 2009, APs was 2012, not a year before. Nevertheless, the offensive play changes that have way to the modern passing era were born in 2007 and where well in use by 2012, the year Manning was also considered for the award when he was in Denver.
@Luis Mercado who the fuck thinks the league transformed into a passing league in 2007? More like 2013. Teams up to 2012 were still operating a run first offense. 49ers, in 2011 with Kap, Redskins, in 2012 with RG3. Hell, Alford Morris had 1600 yards in 2012. Who? BTW, never said CJ2k broke 2K a year before him, I said he rushed for 2K just before him. Never said he did it in 2012.

Big props War Daddy!
11:52 I remember this game. I followed his stats game by game all year.
Remember the 295 game too.
This was when I first started being obsessed with the Ravens and following their every movement
Jacabo Blanco still gives me goosebumps watching
@@kingtazzzz1280 me too bro.
Such good memories. Those early to mid 2000 teams! Something special.
2006 was awesome too with McNair.
Then Flacco came along.
Now Lamar.
Ans great defense the whole time.
We are lucky as Ravens fans.
Sincere question, how old are you? Because you look like you're barely in your 20's in your pic. Just wondering htf you were following his stats when you were still in diapers..
@@mattmcgrath3959 I am 27 lmao just look 12.
My mommy keeps tells me looking young will be a good thing soon 🤣
Hell yea man loved that 2000-2004 era Ravens...even with the abysmal QB situation. Grback, boller, Anthony Wright, Jeff Blake...thank God we got McNair for 2006.
Real throwback no gloves, no elbow pads, no sleeves. One of my favorites he is much underrated.
He's definitely not underrated to me, I know what he's about.
lol yea we Steeler fans do
The moves and the trucking!! Beast! I use to love this football! That boy was fast too!
"Second only to Jim Brown" being a statement that is made about you at any point in your career means you were doing some crazy shit!
J Lew one of the best to do it #Adamsville GA 💯
I'd like to thank this video for reminding me how good Jamal Lewis and Preist Holmes were
This dude was one of my favorite players. He’s one of the best power backs of all time. And he was fast af too. 👍🏼
One of the few good players in the 2000 draft (him and a few other players and I didn't forget about tom Brady)
Loved him. When football was still football. From a Packers fan.
Steelers fan here: This guy was an absolute monster.
Blue Horseshoe no one cares
Ellsworth Bentley You cared enough to comment, shithead
I still have his jersey. What a bruiser. Much respect to Baltimore's greatest rusher
Atlanta Finest..Best Running Back Ever out of Georgia.WestSide Made
I grew up in the 90's and was grew up in the household of 9er fans (which I am still to this day).
You guys should do a thing where you get every Browns coach since 1999 in the same room.
Ramen Robbie not enough chairs
Ramen Robbie like that fox sports tiger woods special where they got all his amateur opponents (tiger woods was undefeated as an amateur) in a room to talk about him: a group therapy session
Yeah, make sure you book a hotel with a conference/ball room because you're gonna have to plan some kind of banquet to accommodate that many people.
One of my favorite backs & totally deserves to be mentioned among the best.
Jamal Lewis #31 Tennessee Volunteers (1996-1999)

He’s a Hall Of Famer

He was good, but not a hall of famer.
One of my all time favorite RB's. Man looks good at 40. He was a beast at 5'11 235-245lbs.
My god can you imagine this man with Lamar? With 11 on 11 football?
He'd rush for 3k lol
It would be scarier than leatherface for opposing defenses

That would be insane =) And just for good measure Johnathan Ogden, Ray Lewis, and Ed Reed in their primes =)

Simply a beast... One of the best r/b of all time. So underrated. I hope he is doing ok these days. I saw him being interviewed a few years back and he had severe memory loss. One of the best to ever do it.
TWO guys I would HATE to try to tackle. Jamal Lewis and Jerome Bettis.
What About Brandon Jacobs, TJ Duckett, Mike Alstott, Payton Hillis & Derrick Henry

Eddie George Earl Campbell, Jamal Lewis and Adrian Peterson
Jamal Lewis was a beast......very powerful and determined runner.....Ravens fans miss you Jamal.....
I was a raiderfan all my life. Jamal was the man! A real running back. And he ran the ball. Not run away from with the ball.
We have had a lot of good Lewis’ with the ravens
I played ball with Jamal growing up and he was a beast even in elementary and middle school. Much respect man!

They were even making Browns jokes back in the day 😂 😂
What an awesome era. The NFL was stacked back then & it was still football.
He, Ricky Williams and earl Campbell we’re scary as hell. All cut from the same cloth. But Ricky and Jamal Lewis were scary to tackle because they would pick up speed so fast with all that bulk sheesh idk who ran harder him or Ricky
The most underrated power back in my opinion. Man watching this to me back to 4th grade again. This was the year I started loving the Ravens. Even more so when the Ravens drafted my cousin Haloti in 2006. Ravens flock baby!!! Thanks for the memories Jamal!!! God bless ✊🏾💯♠️
sOOOOOOO underrated
Remember playing with them in madden, him and ray Lewis were a cold combination

@Walter Brown super bowl party every year.
Another Super Bowl
One of my favorite runningbacks in the early - mid 2000's
I forgot they tackle in practice LoL how the times have changed
Damn this man was a force. He was a part of my Tennessee Volunteers in the 90s and he might be the best freshman running back ever in college. This man was a wrecking ball. Everytime he touched the ball it was gonna be damn near impossible to bring him down
Damn, how do they have HD footage of Super Bowl XXXV? That was 2001.
We had cars and everthing in 2001
TheLocalLt good info. I didn’t know HD broadcasts went back that far.
Jamal Louis was on track to becoming the best running back of the decade and to be remembered all time then along comes Adrian Peterson
I don't think we'll ever see a 2000 yard rushing season again with the way the game is going today.
Raymond Smith that's how you know how legendary Adrian Peterson is. It was already a passing league when he had his'. And that was after his ACL!
@@LuisMercadoorg Personally I think it was 2011 when it started getting ridiculous. I mean three 5000 yard passers in one season? C'mon
