Being trapped in a recording studio with Tommy Lee and Nikki six sounds like a kind of hell only mick mars could fathom
Nobody has ever said Nikki or Tommy were hard to work with. Super creative, hard-working. Vince is the problem.
@@ExcitedAnacondaSnake-hg8ecI think they meant that Nikki and Tommy (particularly Nikki) are known to be real egomaniacs
It was an incredible album… ONE OF MY FAVORITES
To sum things up, Vince Neil left Motley Crue, John Corabi joined Motley Crue, and Motley Crue made Motley Crue, a Motley Crue album that sounded nothing like Motley Crue.
Musically, Power to the Music and Poison Apples sounds like MC
It was an attempt to develop their sound for the grunge era since 80s hard rock was considered irrelevant by that point and hated by the incoming generation. It's not really a terrible album yet failed commercially. Personally I love the first two records but everything MC has released since then hasn't held up as well for me over the years. Dr. Feelgood was their peak and it was pretty much downhill from there.
True, because it was waaay better than any earlier Motley album
I still remember seeing an absurd amount of used CD copies of that album at Tower Records literally like three days after it dropped 😂
Thank you for saving me 15 minutes of my life
It’s just disappointing that Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx totally act like this album has never existed to this day. I think one of the reasons I personally love this album is because it’s arguably their heaviest album and most raw album musically but lyrically 💯 Highly recommend reading John Corabi’s book. Totally outstanding and fascinating from start to finish.
Corabi's book is good,. but his need to write 'f**k' three times every sentence got wearing after a while.
Tommy actually just posted on the anniversary how much he liked it the other day
if they changed the band name, do you think the album would have done better? BTW I agree 100% with your comment
@@djl9919 Changing the name would have been appropriate artistically but disadvantageous from a marketing perspective.
your right. thanks for the reply@@WinterInTheForest
I was 17 at this time and a huge Crue fan, and my friends would mess with me saying dude the 80s are done. When this album came out i Fn loved it! It was heavy, the drums sounded so good. Smoke the sky just rocked!
I was 15 and worshipped this album since the day it came out. my first concert was that summer Motley Crue with corabi.
@@matts6364 that would've been rad to see this version of the Crue. I got to see them on their greatest hits tour in 99, but early 90s Crue I'd buy that for a dollar!
gotta mention Smoke The Sky again, that riff is so awesome
Love love love Hooligan’s Holiday. It’s my favorite Crue song. I wish they’d had John Corabi or Dead Daises on the final tour open for them, then he could join them on stage for that song.
Uncle Jack
This is my favorite motley album! So solid!
Great summary of this era of Motley Crue.
There were quite a few good Hard Rock albums released in 1994 like this one, Cinderella's "Still Climbing" and Tesla's "Bust a Nut". However MTV and record companies were busy chasing the Grunge trend and didn't give these albums the time of their day. It wasn't even like "hey Hard Rock can co-exist with Alternative" , it was like "We tell you what's cool and you must consume Grunge now"... Anyway thanks to Streamig we can now check all these albums and form our own opinions.
I've often said that, out of all those "metal" bands that ruled the late 80's, Tesla was the one that could have survived Grunge. They had a workingman's vibe to them that might have fit in well with the plaid flannel and living in a van down by the river stuff. But, the record companies lumped them into the same box as Poison and Winger because they didn't know any better and dumped them. Have you heard "Cold Blue Steel?" It would have been massive in 1990. By the way, I think "Bust a Nut" was the best thing Tesla ever did. But did anyone listen to it? Did anyone care? "You've got to bounce back like a rubber band..."
So was Motley Crouton. That album is a bag of different sh¡t - same toilet. The Crouton’s begged Eddie Vender and Trent Reznor to be their new singer. Eddie was learning the ukulele at the time, and Trent was doing a hip-hop album he decided to never release. Eddie Money would have been a much better fit.
I love to see a video about Fear Factory. The history of the band, the breakup, Dino coming back, Burton leaving, getting Milo. I think they would make an interesting topic for a future video 🤘
Great suggestion!
Hell yeah. You don't hear enough about FF.
Vince always comes off very likeable on interviews
And yet vince is an asshole
I saw the “Corabi Motley Crue” at woodlands pavilion in Houston the summer of 94, and was an awesome show
Same, he brought new life to a lot of the old songs they played also.
I love the 94 album, great sound
It was good, but within weeks radio stopped playing it. Generation Swine sucked
The irony? It's a fantastic album. Probably their best.
Their best is Shout, and then Too Fast for Love, that was Motley Crue. MC 94 wasn't Motley Crue, if you think it's their best, you weren't a MC fan.
@@stephanea5364agreed
@@stephanea5364 They brought Vince back to the "real" M.C and haven't realeased anything decent since. But it's all subjective.
Generation Swine sure wasn't the real MC but I agree they never did better than MC94 after. Some songs here and there but no consistent record like MC94@@JoeyArmstrong2800
The irony? Nobody bought it.......
I never viewed it as grunge or them trying to be grunge, it was just the natural evolution of their sound. it started with feelgood, then primal scream, then add corabi & a 2nd guitar. just a great hard rock album.
I feel like grunge copied the crue
@@winning3329 LMAO. This might be the dumbest thing typed on UA-cam in a LONG time. Kudos.
IMHO, one of the greatest albums EVER, by ANY band 🤘
Nikki Sixx: "My standard for writing lyrics is so high!"
(10 seconds later)
Also Nikki Sixx: "Usually I write a set of lyrics in about an hour."
Ha ha ha ha ha that was the funniest thing part of this whole interview!!!!!!!!! Freakin juvenile songwriter!!!
The best album they ever did.
That album is so good. Its sad people didnt get it.
I guess if it was good people would have got it, but the words good & Motley Crue really dont go well together
@@patientmental875 thats the thing, this album is good, it dosent sound like Mötley Crüe. 😉
LAME!!
@rnrtruestories
'Motley Crue [S/T]' is an absolute masterpiece; Bob Rock's crushing production, the mature content, cohesive songwriting and FAR SUPERIOR talent in John Corabi all COMPLETLEY SUPERCEDE Motley's discography (even to this very day). Since the album sounded so radically different from the thin and cliche Pop Metal of previous albums, the ONLY mistake was that they used the name MOTLEY CRUE. If they either renamed the band entirely or called it something like "Motley Crue with John Corabi" and thereby further separating themselves from days past, I think the response (and legacy) of this album would be MUCH different.
It is, without question (and not surprisingly) my favorite M/C album in their discography and still ranks as one of the most misunderstood (pun intended), and hidden gems of the early/mid '90s Hard/Heavy Metal scene.
Cheers,
Brent
100%
John Corabi was very underrated. If Motley Crue started with him as a singer, I think they still would have made it big. I don't believe Vince had much credit in writing. I think he was just the singer. So what else did he contribute? Mick's riffs were still there and the songs would still be written the same.
This Corabi album was awesome. People just didn't give it the chance it deserved. It will go down with Chinese Democracy. Great songs, no love. But the music is still out there for me and other fans to listen to so we don't need other people to approve. They are the one's missing out! If you don't know this album, give it a listen. It's really good!
I full heartedly agree if they started with Jihn they would’ve still gotten bug maybe not as big as with Vince but certainly way more respected John Corabi is a top class singer I only see Staley, Cornell, Tyler, Rose, Perry, & Mercury that can sing circles around him John’s technique is that good.
@Jeybird1410 I don't want to start comparing him to others, but I did like his vocal style better than Vince's. I'm not trying to rank him in the top whatever list of rock singers. I'm just pointing out that he deserved a lot better, and I appreciated what he brought to the band. Songs like Misunderstood compete with the best Motley Crue had to offer. I haven't heard him lately, but I'm sure he would not embarrass himself on stage like Vince is doing today.
@@dw1784 well don’t worry you’re not. I AM. I’m a rock singer myself even got some vocal training & trust me when I say Corabi is better than 85% of rock singers today & back then. his vocal style is basically a mix of steven tyler with more bluesy rasp & his vocal technique is great & can also be taught & is healthy for you. It’s why he still sounds pretty good today & not like other singers like Dokken or Vince or Bon Jovi even though he was a heavier smoker than all 3. Corabi is great singer that is often overlooked but always can teach you a thing or two to apply to your own style. Also I agree he should’ve been dealt with better I wish the guy was in a bigger better band always felt like he never achieved the true success his potential was vast.
It sucked, all of it always did. Even when the Crouton’s opened for Ozzy Bark at the Spoon, it was like a junior high hobby band opening. GN’R fell off after the masterpiece Appetite.
@@Chuck.s_EviI_Mustache GNR expanded their musicality. Slash has some extremely memorable moments in UYI albums. Appetite was written when they were broke, and it showed in their lyrics, which made it so great. However, they couldn't keep writing that way forever, or people would have complained that the "stories" had less grit and meaning. I don't think you would have been happy with any follow-up album after that.
By far the best album they have ever released.
The 94 release with Corabi is their best overall release.
Agree
yes
You just have the perfect voice for these videos
Thanks I hate my voice
But, it works very well for this great channel! @@rnrtruestories
That Corabi album is their Best album. Micks playing on that was next level and amazing! Tommy played his ass off and the added percussion playing added to his drumming legacy. Nikki actually played some great bass and wrote some of his best lyrics. Corabi was amazing!
Did you like their self titled album?
I love it, but I understand why some people were turned off by it at the time. Perhaps they should have dropped the Motley Crue name & created a something totally different? Might have made a difference, but we'll never know.
I liked it, but it wasn't the same band, kind of like Van Hagar, still a good band but different
I prefer their other material, but can understand why some like it and what the band was trying to do and can respect that. It's not that M94 is a bad album, it's that it doesn't sound anything like the Crue
Had they changed the name of the band it would have been better received.
The self titled album went gold it’s probably platinum now
That '94 album is my absolute favorite albums of theirs. Hard rock songs while still melodic. I wish they had made more with John Corabi.
Corabi was a great addition and Motley Crue was a solid release. Too bad we will never hear this music live again. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. W.A.S.P. would be a cool untold story.
Tommy's playing is amazing on the 1994 record
To me, the self-titled record is one of their best.
That album is their masterpiece as musicians
Eddie "I know everybody in that band" Trunk 😂😂😂😂
I always love that one. I also like Eddie junk in the trunk
"They formed because of me!"
Eddie "Roth sucked, but Hagar ruled" Trunk.
@@lanceashIf Eddie stated he doesn't like Roth that can only mean that Roth didn't want to go on his show.
He incessantly trashes KISS for that very reason; Gene and Paul won't do his radio show or go on THAT METAL SHOW.
@rnrtruestories Eddie Trunk is a big fan boy of Ted Nugent so.... yeah.
Best album they put out!!
Excellent episode about an era in their lives I haven’t heard about before.
After what they did to Mick Mars I totally understand Coriabi.
🤘🏻🇸🇪🤘🏻
As I recall, Elektra was a subsidiary of Warner in the early 90's. Though it's technically true Neil signed with a different label, it's really a case of moving to a different apartment in the same building.
The fans absolutely screwed this up by not embracing this. This is the absolute best that the Crue ever sounded.
Its got some great songs on it. Really grew on me in the next decade
The best decision they had. Firing vince neil is a must if you want to be taken seriously.
Thanks again, great video
Glad you enjoyed it
It’s legitimately a pretty good album
Still the best piece of material they ever put together.
I love this record. By far their best.
That Album kicked ass! Its a shame they didn't do another with Corabi.
It is my favorite album, Generation swine ranks high as well, but Dr. Feelgood and Girls, Girls, Girls are too good.
I saw Vince at Hammerjacks in Baltimore after the Crue got rid of him. His 1st solo album and tour was great. Motley learned fast that there is no Crue without Vince.🤟
I saw him in NYC, he had a great band with Vikki Fox & Steve Stevens. I went completely expecting it suck & mainly to just hang out but Vince was totally into the show & was actually good.
@@ThundersMcCoy his band was really the best you could ask for in that situation. I bet that tour was fun as hell. Scaled down from Motley standards and more time to party for Vince 🤟
Why didn’t Vince do another album with his band? Exposed was really good
Steve Stevens made the album lift like rocket.
In a similar vein, I think Jugulator is a really good album. Priest's best one, imo, I like every song on it
I have never been a huge Crue fan really. Mars new stuff is actually quite interesting
Thank you so much for mentioning Exposed! Such a good album, the real followup to Dr. Feelgood :)
I'm with Vince on the Grunge thing, I'm not a fan of Grunge because it has this hard subject matter to it yet not as heavy sonically as actual metal bands (with the exception of Alice In Chains honestly, I like them).
Would definitely give the self titled another chance!
You’re welcome
Sorry but Vince's singing is what hurt his career 😂
That album it’s their best one
Best album the band has ever made
It’s a really good album and I think if it was any other band ppl would call it a grunge era classic it has so many good songs hooligans holiday, misunderstood, and poison apple
Incredible album
I wish the fans had given John Corabi a chance because he was a much better vocalist.
Wait, Nikki said that Corabi couldn't write lyrics?
As far as I recall, Vince didn't contribute much to lyrics, and back then Nikki bragged about how great it was to write with John, someone that could contribute musically and lyrically. Dude can't keep his lies straight.
MC probably had the deepest lyrics they ever penned.
Don't crap on it after the fact cuz it failed.
Great video.
Thanks!
I personally loved that album.
Great video man!!!
Appreciate it!
best Motley EVER sounded...
I’m a huge Mötley fan and I love this album. Mötley has never sounded better musically.
Do a video on Vince Neil’s Exposed. That album was 🔥 curious why he didn’t make another like it
This is my third favourite Morley Crüe album right next to TFFL and SATD. Just a killer album.
8:40 Hey Siri, what's backstabbing?
Haha yup I did a whole video on that feud
It was their best album, hands down. If it had come out under a different band name, people would have given it a chance, especially Smoke The Sky.
Third best, no more.
@@stephanea5364 That's your opinion, and you're entitled to it. Based on all of the comments you've left on this thread, my opinion is that your opinion isn't an one I would take too seriously. There's nothing worse than a fanboy or a fangirl if you're looking for an intelligent or unbiased take.
@@MarkMay-cr6bv agreed!
Motley Crue was easily their best album musically. (Minus the last 2 or 3 songs)
plz make a hr plus compilation of your videos so i can sit and binge watch thank you
Everyone tried grunge. Halford, Crue , even the mighty metallica'
When this album came out, like many fans, I had a hard time with accepting the new group. Crew without Vince wasn't the same... Now, years later, I look back and realize just how great this album was, and how awesome they sounded as a group... they were running on all cylinders, and really polished their craft.
Definition of debauchery in the 80’s: Motley Crue
Got to hang out with Corabi and Kulick after a Union concert. Really nice down to earth guys and a great band. I highly recommend listening to unions albums.
Calling that album “unfocused” is titanically stupid. It’s literally their most focused album, alongside Dr. Feelgood.
If anyone doesn't know this, in the Dirt movie the very short clip of Corabi was played by UA-camr Anthony Vincent of 10 Second Songs. I wish they had him sing in the movie. He would have been great!
Apparently Corabi was upset about his portrayal in the movie and how they glossed over his time in the band
@rnrtruestories I'm not surprised. I was annoyed too. It just showed how much the band wanted to forget about this moment in their careers.
BTW. I have been watching your videos since... 2006 or '07? I'm not sure exactly. I think you used to cover a lot of GNR back then. That was before I knew what you looked like. You didn't used to show your face back then. It's always nice to put a face to a channel. Always enjoy hearing new info on bands I love! Thank you for all your great videos over the years!
Turns out Vince's Neil's solo was way better than the 1994 Crue album.
You're kidding, right? Vince's Exposed was just a typical 80's party song album. Motley Crue's self-titled album was a lot deeper. Tommy's drums sound amazing, John and Mick's dual guitar playing layered perfectly together, especially when one is playing solo and the other is doing the rhythm. Nikki's base sounds bigger and fuller than on any previous Crue album. Bob Rock did an incredible job as the producer...all the background music he added to round out the songs. Amazing. My advice is go listen to this album through your headphones not speakers and you'll see what I mean. The reason it didn't go platinum was because fans were expecting another Dr Feelgood sounding album. And it wasn't. But as far as music material is concerned Motley's self-titled album is way better than Vince's party anthem sound.
I wasn't a fan of solo Vince
LMAO GTF outta here with that BS
If that album wouldn't have come out in 1994 it would have done much better.
the 94 record is musically, lyrically, and sonically, the finest album of their career. the fact that most fans now look back at it as their finest. the concerts were great, but nobody was there to hear it, as nobody wanted to hear that version of motley crue. its a shame that they can't go tour with john corabi now, and do a quick 30 date tour and play that album top to bottom in theaters.
I grew up with the Vince Neil Motley Crue and was greatly disappointed with the self titles album. However, I can still listen to the self titled album these days and I just feel like cringing listening to the a Vince Neil albums.
I never understood hair metal, imo all of the songs consist of the same subjects: sex, drugs, partying, with the occasional "oh woe is me, the groupie that i met 2 weeks ago broke my heart" power ballad.
Crue was way more than that.
@@stephanea5364Nikki tried to be but the unt can't write to save his life.
Cherry Pie was a lot deeper than most people give it credit for! Incredible musicianship and lyrically in line done of Jane Goodall’s finest research papers.
I don't understand your comment. Is there something wrong with that?
I liked Vince Neil’s first solo album,I like Mick Mars new stuff and I liked the Crue album with Corabi. I think the problem is Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee
I bought the album when I was in junior high school and liked it. it didn't really sound like motley but i thought it was good. they went through a rough patch started in 1992l I saw them at Jones Beach with the Scorpions in 1998 or 9 and the venue was 2/3 full. kinda amazing they're still doing it, actually. But I have to say it doesn't feel like Motley w/o Vince (whether he can sing or not).
The real question is why people thought Motley Crue was good to start with. Always hated them. Substance-less bullshit while trying to act like they had something real to say & were tough street dudes. Best thing that ever happened to music was grunge taking hair metal down behind the shed and putting it to sleep.
That 94 album kicks a$$
Vince wouldn’t have had a 25% stake in the band Nikki writes all the music and lyrics
Nice work man!
Very well produced episode as always! Now, once again i request an episode on Dokken or the movie Rockstar (ALOT of fun info on that one)
Lee: “Rehab” 🙄
All the non Crue fans will come here now saying it was their best record and none of them bought it LOL
Funny but true!
💯
I bought it... from the discount bin 😂
Yeah just like non Metallica fans in the comment section of the echobrain album saying it’s the best thing ever .
The only defense I have is that there was so much even better music that came out that year that it being Motley Crue's best album doesn't mean I had room in my budget to buy it. I think they had some good material before, but I was never interested in owning any of it.
Nikki saying his lyric standard is high is a joke. Most of the lyrics of Motley songs are utter doggeral, and ironically this is thier best album both lyrically and musically. I get it was a shift in sound but it really worked.
I hate to state the obvious, but we are not talking Rhodes Scholars here.
Easily my favorite Crüe album besides TFFL.
What happened to your video on “Van Halen 3 unreleased 2000 album” can you reupload that
Gonna redo it
@@rnrtruestories please do, lost media is a huge community. You're awesome. That album if ever release will be a great little gem. Thanku for responding
It’s arguably their best record. John allowed them to stretch and Bob Rock did an amazing job. Tommy’s drums sounds incredible. Really would’ve liked a cohesive follow-up. Nikki is such a baby about this record too. I think it pisses him off how many people like it. Refuses to re-release it. John has put out several great albums since then and Nikki/Crue haven’t.
TIL death do us part is a power track off motley 94
It's hilarious hearing about Quarterly… I remember ordering that with my friend back in the day.
I actually was impressed with the album when it came out. It seemed they were progressing a bit finally. It probably wasn't exactly what Motley Crue fans look for on one of their albums but if you listen to it as just a new album from a hard rock band it is not bad at all
This album is effin' awesome!
Interesting that Crüe said they looked at Cinderella as inspiration for going towards a more blues sound for the self-titled album but did they not notice what happened to Cinderella after Heartbreak Station came out?
Cinderella were playing to half filled arenas and eventually canceled the rest of that tour and Heartbreak Station sold way less than their first 2 cds.
Tommy Lee... The oldest 13 year old there has ever been.
Broh, that’s insane man! Totally get you bro! Unreal!
For sure man, like boom bash! I dig it... gagahgagagah huh-huh-huh-huh. geegeegee
Chuck Shute getting the name drop!
Man...if Sixx's words of "My standards of writing are so high, that it took months" when referring to lyric writing are true. Then...sheesh. I'd hate to hear something he rushed.
Poison Apples is a banger!!!
I thought the motley Crue album was good and I thought Vince Neil exposed was good. It's kind of funny to hear that his album did better than motley Crue
