Nice video! I did not invent the double glitchy wallkick strategy itself, this already existed as a TAS strategy. I just used some computational tools I wrote (which in turn relied on a recompiled version of the game by Bad Boot) to find somewhat consistent RTA setups. See Crackhex's comment for more info. Also, Circumark has come up with a bunch of reroutes for 120 to do carpetless earlier (more relevant for the old bob-omb strat), and helped investigate and identify more possible setups after the first couple dropped.
dude forgot that lunar jump was the first person to hit the gwk carpetless in a run, it wasn't a very good run and it took him several attempts but THATS MY GOAT
Hey, SM64 TASer here. I want to note that the history about the TAS version of the carpetless is somewhat inaccurate. Regarding the discovery of the trick, there was originally a video in 2009 by blazesoul13 which was an attempt at this strategy, however it failed due to lack of height caused by a bad angle from the 2nd wallkick, after the first gwk. This was re-investigated after a video of someone with altered physics did what blazesoul had attempted, but succeeded. The community then investigated this, and Iwer + Frame were able to demonstrate a new type of glitchy wallkick possible due to the geometry. This strat likely would not have been found for some more time until someone else started trying to find it, and that could have been years. I uploaded the full TAS of this strat to my channel, and now have an updated one on my channel as well, which I am rather happy about now. TAS evolution of this star is very interesting, so I wish you had probed our conmunity for some research. If you had wanted to look a bit more into the old history of carpetless, there are some old niconico videos, along with plenty of un archived runs on an old JP wiki you likely wont find without specifically searching archives of old TAS content. Mario64Masters, while the first to do it, had a run slower than is possible with the carpet. The first person to upload a faster time was blazesoul on march 11th 2010. There was also a 40 second run uploaded two days later to niconico, so snark's run was only slightly faster than that. I also have a sub 21 second run palix helped me with, that I still need to upload :)
@ObliviousBear while I would love to do that, I'm not good at video making/editing, and would likely do a terrible job. I am absolutely willing to help anyone who wishes to do that tho :p
Idk if calling it a common use in speedruns is appropriate. I'm not a SM64 runner, but I do pay attention to the community and, pretty much only top level runners use it. not mid or bottom tier runners. to say it's a common used strat is kinda exaggerating the strategy.
Very nice documentary on speedrunning! Makes me wonder how much close we truly are from perfection. It's possible that 1:36 will be the limit unless someone discovers something exceptional like ACE similar to OoT or something like that.
watching this makes me wish i was a part of the 120 star community, ive wanted to get into sm64 speedrunning since i was a kid and this video has sparked my interest again
You do a great job at blending technical terms with easy to understand concepts to get the complex strategies across while keeping it all super intriguing and captivating. Great vid as always connor!

Would love to see anything you put together about the history of TASing sm64, whether it's carpetless or not!

Oh, so this is why the algorithm put you into my recommended section the other day. It was presciently introducing me to your channel.
There's nothing like the comfort of a documentary on a niche subject from your favorite game. Nice vid
You make really good videos dude, you should be proud of your work.
Nice documentary.
yes
It's copying an already existing video essay almost word by word at some points, though.
Its finaly here! it was a great watch and defo lived up to the hype I had for our once a year upload!
This is awesome. Your storytelling and editing are top notch and it's always great learning about a Speedrun I had never heard of
It's so crazy how carpetless was first impossible and now is a common use in speedruns. Great Video Connor!
