- Join me in this eye-opening video where I share my personal experience and reasons for cancelling my Rivian R1S electric vehicle order. After much anticipation and excitement, I've encountered a significant hurdle that's made me rethink my decision: the challenges posed by the current state of charging networks, particularly Electrify America and Chargepoint.
As a Tesla owner, the Tesla charging network is light year ahead of everyone else, however if you plan to drive away from your own territory in an non-Tesla, then beware the pitfalls of charging.
I'll dive into the issues I faced, including broken and slow chargers, which proved to be a major inconvenience for long road trips. This video isn't just about my story; it's a discussion on the broader implications for EV adoption and the importance of a reliable and efficient charging infrastructure.
Whether you're an EV enthusiast, a potential Rivian buyer, or just curious about the state of electric vehicle charging networks, this video will provide valuable insights and real-world experiences. Don't miss out as I unfold the reasons behind my decision and what it means for the future of electric mobility.

I'm always amazed how many people get on UA-cam and complain about CCS charging. I've owned my Mustang Mach e for nearly 2 years with more than 24K miles, I recently drove to Nashville, TN which is roughly 800 miles from home, and I've never had a problem charging. Granted most of my charging occurs at home but I have done charging on the road when I needed to visit job sites 135 miles from home in the winter. No problems experienced.
It's all good until it isn't 😀
24k is only about 250 miles a week. If you're mostly charging at home, you wouldn't have had many opportunities to run into the issue.
Having one long trip in two years isn't a great indicator.
I have a CCS adapter i’ve used a few times with my Tesla. Half the time the CCS chargers don’t work and i give up. Tesla superchargers always work, even if some are roped off. Just move to the next few stalls over.
I feel for you non Tesla charging peeps- i’d never wish that on anyone.
And they’re hurting the EV brand terribly.
A vehicle purchase is an immensely personal decision and one must not make it if they are not comfortable . The electrify America charging criticism is completely valid , which is why rivian is opening its own RAN network and opening it to NACS in 2024 . Totally respect your decision . Thank you for that cancellation and letting others in line go ahead .
Hopefully in a few years other EVs can catch up to Tesla when it comes to charging. They should have taken Elon up on his offer when he open sourced NACS, and we prob wouldn't be so behind for other manufacturers.
@@Pagosa I think almost all car manufacturers have shifted to NACS now and will start with adapters in 2024 . Looks like a win win to me . Rivian owners get access to all chargers including superchargers and tesla gets some extra revenue . Only downside is for tesla owners who had it all to themselves till now . But I guess the new fees should take care of over crowding.
Btw if you were driving a Rivian there is a RAN charger in Denver ( CO has 4 now and one more on the way along with another one in Cheyenne)
Unfortunatley I was hanging out in Breck, so needed one there! I hope that's on their list@@Rx100Vx
@@Pagosana , you made the right choice not going with the Rivian currently. It’s just not for you right now I guess.
What happened to the cabin tour?
Coming up, waiting until all these dirty snow piles melt
This is great information. Without the infrastructure to support the vehicle, traveling would be very frustrating! - Michelle
Yes, very frustrating. But if you just stay around your home base, an electric is the way to go
Since we live full time on the road, electric is really not an option for us yet. Unless Tesla :) -Michelle@@Pagosa
seems like were months if not weeks away from supercharger access.. but you do you
It won’t be great at first as only one or two chargers will be accessible for non Tesla per station, still quite a bit away for non Tesla cars to enjoy what we have as Tesla owners.
Could have just charged the Rivian at the Tesla supercharger
True, at the time, it was still just an announcement and no details
The Infrastructure bill sets out to add 500,0000 chargers to the grid. Hopefully thta'll help hasten the move from ICE to EV.
One of the issues is the maintenance of these chargers. It’s like they are abandoned after being put in and can be out of service for weeks. A definitive plan needs to address this as the world transforms to more EV
The stipulations for the stations have yielded few takers. That, and the revenue doesn't cover the cost and maintenance.
Electrify America is overused as they have so many agreements with auto manufacturers for free charging. There are other great charging networks like EVGO and Chargepoint.
This was the only Level 2 and 3 in the area . Lots of ChargePoint there, but only level 1
You do realize as if 2024 they're going to make adapters available to charge using Tesla supercharger. In 2025 they'll fully changeover to NACS.
Yes, but Tesla is not opening all their chargers to non Tesla vehicles, so it will be better, but not great. Prob only one or two chargers per station will be available to non Teslas. Elon too smart not to keep his customers priority
I think we’re in the same boat… Do you think charging will improve when Rivian switches over to NACS plugs in 2025? At that point will they be able to leverage the entire Supercharger network?
The NASC with adapter is coming in 2024 along with more RAN chargers opening . The NACS plus ti vehicle is coming in 2025 . So yeah in about a couple of months access to Tesla superchargers without even the magic dock( which can be used now ).
Hi Matt, I'm going to let VidIq Ai generate a response: "It's definitely an exciting prospect! Switching over to NACS plugs could potentially improve the charging experience for Rivian owners and accessing the Supercharger network would be a game-changer."
Thanks Robot Brandon!

Wow, wish I had like 10 houses and ten cars.
Me too!
My Model Y works as a truck with rear seats folded, we just moved recently carrying all our stuff except large furniture in MY, multiple trips obviously. Rivian is a great product, but they need to get on NACS yesterday, not in 2025.
For sure!
Quit WHINING!
I can’t, it’s sad
Smart move. I have a major going concern issue with Rivian. Losing $1+ bill every quarter. Lots of competition for BEV pickups & SUVs on the horizon. Rivian's $90,000 vehicles are just too costly. The $1.7 bill convertible share offering; the $15 bill debt offering; on top of all the other offerings will massively dilute existing Rivian shareholders. Much better off buying Tesla or any other BEV maker which has a chance of being a going concern. And when Rivian eventually goes bankrupt, what happens to warranty and after-market service? Anyone buying a Rivian is crazy
FUD .
15 billion debt offering ? Buddy those are on paper for Georgia incentives and not an actual debt offering . You are spreading misinformation on purpose and if you are shorting shares or benefiting out of spreading of this misinformation all these comments will be considered as evidence for the SEC. Good luck.
Rivian will be fine. The product is so good, that it won't fail, even if current management can't figure out the economics, someone will.
Weird in uk we can now use all Tesla superchargers lol
That's probably because they are CCS chargers. In the US, very few Tesla superchargers are CCS. Eventually, Rivian will have Tesla type plugs.
All of the manufacturers finally woke up and will convert to the Tesla standard, but won’t be until 2025
If you think the "driving" is better in electric than gas, then I'm guessing you've also never been much of a bike guy.
If you prefer the numbness, the disconnect etc, than to feel the friction between each moving part, or be able to tell specifically which tire is 5lb low on pressure by the feel not a warning light, be able to stop faster than ABS etc....,
...then yur just not a driver...
...yur a passenger...
..accept it...
..leave the rest of us alone with our cars that we can feel.
I recommend a horse, you can feel even more. The rest of us, we will just move forward and enjoy progress.
I’ve accepted it 😃
That Rivion car looks ugly in my opinion.
Not for everyone
