Channa is also known as chickpeas, garbanzo beans or ceci beans. Aloo on the other hand is what we Trinidadians refer to potato. Hence the term channa and aloo. In this dish, channa and aloo are simmered in a fragrant curry sauce flavored with aromatics including turmeric, cumin and fresh herbs.

Absolutely amazing recipe Ria❤️ this channa and aloo tastes like real ‘prayers food!’ Thank you so much for sharing it, eternally grateful 🙏
I made this yesterday, I used mushrooms instead of potatoes. OMG, it tasted AMAZING. I also made green seasoning using your recipe guidelines. For my herbs, I used 1bunch cilantro, 1/2 bunch parsley, white ends of scallions 2 bunches, a handful of mint leaves, handful of sorrel leaves.
My friend Ria, thank you so so much for sharing these videos.
Yet again, another brilliant cooking demo! Ria, you're a fantastic teacher and your calm, knowledgeable delivery, is on point! I would buy anything you're selling, 💯%. 😁👍🏽
I tried this recipe yesterday and it came out perfect. Yay! Thanks ☺
I made this today. It was frigging delicious. I had some tweaks tho. I used jalapeno peppers that were left over from making a mexican dish, I added all purpose seasoning along with the salt and I also used thyme leaves instead of fine thyme. My first time cooking curry and as a Trini woman this is a must know lol. Thanks to you, I have a manual on how to cook curry so it comes out well every time
This looks so yummy! This is the same way my grandma taught my mum and she then taught me...
I just love all your recipes and I have tried most of them and i would not use anyone elses because all yours came out excellent
I love this recipe. All your recipes are simple but the results are amazing. Usually I would also add a few curry leaves in the oil with the mathee to fry. Looks delicious.

Love ur voice !! Perfect for a cooking Chanel !
Hi Ria, does the Stiring at the end make the stew thicker or are you just evaporating the liquid a little bit?
Also are you using particular type of curry powder? Thanks
Elsa&lisa Hi sorry I missed your questions. I was never notified. Stirring does both. I use Cariherb from Trinidad. Any Trini brand will work. 🌷
Looks amazing!! I cooked this yesterday but using a recipe from another channel and they didn't add salt and YOU DID which is why I will forever listen and try your recipes - you're a legend.
I always enjoy watching ur channel. When I am lazy I buy channa in the tin🤦♀️🤣
Most folks do I’m sure. It’s not being lazy, just quicker..... CMJ
Can you please make curry powder at home ??
Omg, I'm a Pakistani girl. We also call chickpeas and potato "Aloo Channa.
We all have the same roots. India.
in trinidad, it's atually called channa and aloo, I think she called it this for the ones who know it as chickpeas and potato.
@@bfpmg9526 Pakistani don't know that🤣 that's why so surprised to hear trini ppl use hindi words
@@sunkissedheart347 I love Pakistani people. I have Pakistani people as friends but outside my friend circle they can be very sensitive when I remind them that originally they are Indians and only became Pakistanis when India was divided. Same with Bangladeshis.
Ria , ah think ah love you ! Channa looks so good
GrenadianTrini 😂❤️
Soaked chick peas making this tomorrow
This is something I been looking for. Thank u. My best friend in high school was Indian and her mother used to make something like this and put it over rice. It was yummy! And spicy 😊. I've missed it. Been long time since I found something close to it and this is it I believe. Hers was a little more different in coloring but close enough. Thank u again. Going to try this weekend. ❤️
Did u use roasted gheera? It looks light, not dark brown like the ones u buy at store
Dear Ria, If I can't find Bandhania, is it ok to buy green seasoning from Amazon? Which brand would you recommend? Thank you.
Nageswara Rao Vellanki Bala I never recommend buying green seasoning -most contain chemicals and preservatives and nothing like freshly made ! You can use chopped scallion or cilantro.
@@CookingWithRia : Thank you. I will use a combination of Scallion and Cilantro. I absolutely love your recipes, and so far I made Stew chicken and curry chicken.
Hi Ria can you please link me to your recipe please, this looks delicious!

Theresa Collins Hi Theresa. Cold pressed extra virgin olive oil.
Looks 😍😍 do u/can you add coconut milk
phoenix Thanks. Never tried. If you do let me know how it turns out.

i think we should make/create dishes without sugar as that is an issue for some peoples....

I don’t have Methi seeds. Can I use Kasoori Methi instead?
Terri Patterson You can leave it out.
If you don’t have a lot of time can you use can chickpeas?
Yes you can. Here is a 30 min curry channa and aloo recipe using canned chickpeas: yo.com/2023/10/curry-canned-chickpeas-and-potatoes/
@@CookingWithRia Thank you
If thyme isn't available then, can we skip it?
Sohail Tajik Yes
If I want the end result to be even thicker what can I do?
i0wNz407 continue to cook it a little longer. Also keep in mind that it thickens as it cools.
@@CookingWithRia Thank you, me and my wife recently discovered carribean cooking and are in love with it. Will definitely give this a try.

Prayers food.
Do I need the maytee
beena sooknanan No you don’t, it’s optional.
@@CookingWithRia thank you ria
Bruh rn I not in Trinidad and I hungry stupzz😞
Thank you for using wooden spoon no clanking on the pot
U know I just realized don’t use amchar massala in ur curry. I use the 4 in mine. curry, geera, turmeric and amchur. Home economics teacher taught me that way. It’s still banging.
good job explaining it step by step i see you use a wooden spoon when cooking curry nice
I wouldn't serve it with paratha, but dhalphouri.
These peas take ages to boil
Pakistani cooks chickpeas the best. Lahori chole is the best.
