I'm 73 and have always wanted a JAG.Trouble is I have a Honda CRV ,which is no fun to drive, but amazingly reliable. My worry is that if I get a Jag and it proves unreliable,I'll feel very stupid and will never forgive myself. If it does go wrong you could be facing a large bill, which I don't need. The only ones I could afford would have at least 50,000 on the clock. Any advise ?

The reason I love jags, is that NO ONE makes car interiors as beautiful, as comfortable, as special as the Brits. It's just a joy to spend any amount of time in. Even the chimes that come on when your door is ajar is pleasant. Much love from Texas

I love Jaguars, I wish I could own one in the confidence it would be reliable, but they are a money pit after the warranty period runs out, and they have a history of failure. Less so these days, but problems still exist. The entire British motor industry was ruined by bad management and governments who didn't care. Rover a prime example

I drove the non-supercharged V8 at the press-launch back in 2008 in Monaco, and I instantly fell in love with the XF. They also had the diesel at the event which I found serviceable (if unremarkable), but the V8 is what you truly want in a car like this.
Even back then, and after getting indoctrinated by the Jaguar PR guys, it didn't feel as refined or even stylish as a BMW 5 series, but it had so much character. And you just don't see them on the road as often as a BMW, Merc or Audi. At least not over here in Germany. In that way, Jags are a lot like Alfa Romeos - nothing truly special underneath the skin, a bit last year when it comes to things like infotainment or drivetrains and with dubious long-term reliability. But both brands can still be very charming for someone who doesn't want the sensible/obvious choice from Stuttgart or Munich.
What I really loved about the car (and it's kinda hard to convey the feeling after 13 years) was the relative boldness of the design, going from the S-Type to the XF. It really felt like they had finally moved away from the "ye olde motorcar"-look and -feel that previous Jags had gotten by on. But to do that, they didn't ditch any of the classic elements like wood or leather - they just re-interpreted them in a more modern and less stuffy way. I'd buy one today if I had the need.

I've had two x-types (2007 and 2009) and have a 3 litre diesel XF automatic (2009). Lovely card to drive, especially the XF, which has plenty of whoosh and beautifully refined.

@@user-sd3ry6sd2t I Paid 7K for the car which was way too much. I had to replace the infotainment screen £800, Nearside front and back alloys had been cracked and poorly repaired so the tyres kept loosing pressure, had to buy two wheels off ebay and was lucky to get them for £90 each. there were lots of other electrical issues with the car due to a corroded fuse box which luckily my mechanic managed to repair. a new one would have been very expensive. I had spent about 3k on repairs and re-newals so on top of the purchace price, I could have bought a newer, better looked after model.
I traded it in against another Jag XJ which I have had for about four months with no issues at all. I would NEVER buy from a private individual again. I will always buy from a reputable dealer, even if it costs a little more.

You actually helped me making an informed decision to buy my first Jag yesterday 🙈 so thank you. Bought a fully loaded 2015 XFS 3.0 Diesel Portfolio with only 36k on the clock. I’ve had a BMW 3 series in the past and also owned/driven Mercedes C, E & S class prior to this. Yes, the German quality and driving experience is there but that all changed after I drove this beautiful car. I have to say they’re actually so underrated in driving and luxury experience. My latest car has been a C class and after driving this Jag the Merc feels like an old man’s car to be honest. The handling is smooth, agile and extremely nimble for this tank of a car and the power will blow your mind away. I drove my mate’s 5 series recently and loved it. But this XFS certainly seemed on a slightly better edge for me. I’m just so lucky to find an extremely well looked after piece by its previous owner with FSH from main Jaguar dealer. Just can’t wait to collect it in couple of days so really excited to enjoy this piece of art. Keep doing the good work mate and hope to see more informative/entertaining reviews from you 👍🏼!

I agree the early ones were a bit poorly built and cheap inside but after 2005 they got a revamp which was a big improvement. Bought a 2011 premium in 2017. Had 52,000 miles. Had a few minor electrical issues with the windows. All the repairs were covered under my extended warranty however, this car is a mechanical beast. Sporty and luxury....powerful!
I took mine to the dealership for annual maintenance and they gave me a 2017 XF as a courtesy to drive until mine was ready. I tell you...i think they were trying to sell me an upgrade...lol but, the 2017 performance was soooo subpar to my 2011. I would not have believed it had I not driven it and experienced it for myself. Also drove the F PACE SUV...same thing. I could not believe the lacking performance. The only Jag that had great performance compared to the XF was the XJ.

I had a 2009 XF 3.0 Prem Lux and loved it. Only concerns were the appalling headlights - I had to get out and check they were actually on more than once, and the dreaded DPF. I had a short commute to work and found the DPF needing to regenerate every couple of weeks and caught me out needing an otherwise unnecessary oil change a couple of times.
If you're looking to buy one make sure it has the Xenon headlights - Portfolio does, I think. That and a good history.

Originally had 2 X-Types. Replaced the one in 2016, with a 2015 XF Luxury Portfolio (V6 Supercharged) in metallic British Racing Green. Absolutely LOVE this car! Got a great deal from the dealership, as it was their service loaner with low km's and no need to say how it was maintained. A pleasure to drive and handles like a dream. Heated windscreen is great to have, as we get some cold winters here in British Columbia. Loved this car so much, we replaced the other X-Type last year with a second XF (albeit a 2013) Luxury (V6 Supercharged with a sport package) in Carnelian Metallic Red, one owner, bought from our dealership and maintained there as well, with low km's. Too good a deal to pass up! So far, zero issues with either. Love how you can go from one car to the other and know exactly how it's going to drive. Would recommend this car to anyone!

No troubles, no brake-downs - NEVER had any problems with any of the two - Service once a year, no nonsense and utterly reasonable to own. Jaguars have always been absolutely great cars and exemplified a premium marque. All premium cars require comprehensive maintenance, you hear people complaining about reliability issues but 9 times out of 10 the issues arising would’ve been avoided if the owner had serviced the car regularly and rectified any small problems occurring as they happened and not left them to turn into bigger problems. The XJ series was an amazing car range - The enthusiasts still revere the E-type and it had its own niche in the market. A work colleague swears by his 3 litre X type jag and has had it for many years and it is still incredibly comfy and luxurious and smooth car. Good video as usual Matt.

I drive the same model: 2010 XF 3 litre diesel 236 bhp Premium Luxury. Superbly comfortable and stylish, but can really shift especially in Sport and Dynamic mode. 0-60 in 6.7 secs means you leave pretty much everything at the Traffic Light Grand Prix if you're in a hurry. Surprisingly practical with the back seat down, I fitted a couple of railway sleepers inside with the boot lid closed. Superbly comfortable for long runs and I agree the interior is MUCH nicer than the mark 2 XF. I test drove a younger 3 litre S Portfolio and to be honest I preferred mine. I found the 8 speed auto tended to be more fussy and swapped cogs when it really didn't need to. I've had mine 4 years and it still brings that sense of contentment when driving or just looking at it. Great, honest review of a superb car. 👍

I've always been a massive Jag fan and wanted one of these for years; I remember when I first started seeing pictures of the XF back in the mid 2000s and was smitten straight away and James Mays review in Top Gear only added to the 'want' factor.
Finally got to buy one in 2015; its a 3.0 TD 2010 Premium Luxury with - at the time - only 53000 on the clock with two owners. Im not a high miler and the 'Rona has also limited time spent in it, but I am now on 98000+ miles and can honestly say it feels just as amazing now as it did when I first got it. Quite a few of my friends have newer German cars but, tbh, they don't feel anywhere near as special; my Jag still feels like much more of an 'event' (even my die hard German Fanboys think so) whilst everyone else's 5/E/A6s feel far more utilitarian, kindof like a kettle really.
Touchwood, so far running it has been a dream (more or less). Had to replace brake discs and brake pads a few times, but that's par of the course really. Also, got a brand new set of Michelin's in 2017 and got 22000 miles out of them before I had to replace them earlier this year. Bar that, the Alternator went faulty once but that's it; its easily been the most reliable and enjoyable car Ive ever had and still turns heads despite being 11 years old now. Pretty good on a run as well; with a heavy right foot, I still get the right side of 35mpg but, if I'm honest, my usual is early 40s.
I cant recommend it enough and cant imagine why anyone after a similar sized car would go for something else. Had it just over 6 years now and hope it lasts many more years to come as there is no other car out there (bar possible an XJ) that I look at and actually want; I've been in the new version (2015?) and don't think it looks anywhere near as good or feels anywhere near as special as this one. Here's hoping for many more years with it.

I enjoyed your review very much. My good friend (amazing mechanic) at Autostart, Bolton highly recommends the Jaguar V6 3.0L twin turbo diesel. I am actively seeking an estate 275 bhp when I know they 240 bhp as you reviewed is more than adequate. I very much liked the style of your review and comments made on your journey.
It must be an age thing, I have lost interest in my remapped Audi S3 I have had for six years and prefer the comfort and amazing performance of the Jaguar XF 3.0L diesel albeit it isn't four wheel drive. I understand some of the newer XF's are four wheel drive but my days of leaving M3's on twisting country lanes in my 2001 S3 have gone.
Anyway, thanks for your great review which I believe to accurate and light hearted!

I've just bought the 2.2 R-Sport funnily enough. Fell in love with it when I saw it, and the test drive sealed the deal. Unbelievable value for money on a 15 plate, with 42k for 15 grand. No complaints at all, so far and it's a huge upgrade over my 12 plate Mondeo Tit X.
    Love it.

@@HighPeakAutos Unbelievable. I was looking at a new shape mondeo on a 17 plate with similar mileage for over 15k and just wasn't feeling it. Plasticky shite tbh.
Accidentally found the Jag and couldn't resist. Can't believe they're not more popular. A class above BMW and Audi's IMO, and I've owned both.

We've done a few of these in Hong Kong, no diesels here though. Weak points are suspension bushes (control arms, drop links, etc) and headlight wiring. The rest of it is great and V8's are best sounding in class. Better reliability here than BMW and Merc which both suffer electrical issues in this climate. Audi doesn't even come close.

I've owned my 2009 XF S diesel for over 5 years with no issues apart from a new alternator at 93000 miles.

Al8minium Pleased to hear it. Any used car can be unreliable so I wouldn’t be put off owning a jag because of reliability worries

Mine went at the same milage on the same .model car as yours.
Jaguar fleeced me and charged 900 pounds to replace it. Despite the fact I had diagnosed this simple problem. That charged 260 quid to diagnose the problem even though I specifically asked for the alternator to be changed. .
Since then the inlet manifold has cracked so i cut my losses at that point. A plastic manifold on a twin turbo performance car ? What were they thinking.

    I went from a 2017 Lexus ES 350 to a 2017 Jag-u-ar XF R SPORT 35t RWD. I enjoyed my Lexus, but I love my Jag! It's a beast of a car and definitely a head turner!

Hi, just wanna say thank you for this great review. It was a deal breaker for me. I bought a 2014 facelift XFS 3.0 diesel, a few weeks ago and it is absolutely amazing to drive. And it sticks out in every way possible. Was about to buy a mk2 xf but realized this model looks and feels better. The seats are insanely comfortable. Got 330bhp and 720nm of torque. Overtaking feels safe every time. Low fuel consumption as well. I guess I just wanna say I love this car in every way. Thank you from Sweden :) 🤘

I bought a 2010 Jag XF petrol when I lived in Atlanta - 2011/13. Never had a problem. It was superb. And when I lived in the UK 2006/07 I had a 2004 Jag XJ....never had a problem. That has been my Jag experience and I reckon I will be buying another one this year here in Melbourne, Australia

I have an elderly customer who has had 17 Jaguars and won't have anything else. He is a retired engineer. He currently has an XF diesel but when he showed me photos of the cars he has owned..including XK150 and E Type...well the photos were wonderful.
