I was all set to go buy a new wheel for my bus, I am taking it off TOMORROW and using your process. Thanks for all you do for all of us
Found a cheap semi bat wing steering wheel and restoring it. If I knew it was this easy and came out this nice I would have picked more of them over the years. What a fun little project!!
Great video man! That steering wheel looks like it is fresh out of the factory!
You truly help so much...love the video, cant wait to use it and fix my wheel. Keep the vids coming. Much respect. Thanks alot
i have a 65 rambler 440 convert. restoring back to original condition. was torn as to painting steering wheell with spray can or sprayer. decided on spray can and it looks fabulous. can not tell and with the clear its very durable. thanks for the tip!

man, awesome work!
Excellent. Now I know what to do. 👍🏼
Lookin good lookin good!
first time trying. . i am halfway through. the rustilium sandable plus filler primer got rid of almost all the hairline cracks.. that fix it stick also works wonders. . hopefully finish it in the next 2 days. .
Thanks a lot for your video. I will use your process to have an almond steering wheel like yours restoring an old black cracked and broken one.
Awesome tutorial! I am thinking of doing mine. I've got the one that's a white base with a few little sparkles in it. Any ideas on paint for that? If not, no biggy.
you sir are awesome
Really love it! I have a steering wheel black, there is a problem to change it to white?
My back sweats easily on the original seats of my 74 SB. what material is best for my problem?
thank you for all your videos BTW, Respect to you Brotha
can you do a video on how to restore a 73 steering wheel? I have a 73 super beetle an the plastic steering wheel has a few larger cracks. I can't find any videos about this steering wheel
Body filler will crack with temperature changes and movement.
Use an epoxy paste such as PC-7 instead.
Jeff C where can I buy PC-7?
Spent a week doing this with that Oatey crap..... came out perfect until it hit 100 in AZ. Now its crap again.
Hi. How many coats of clear?. Any sanding before or after?
Not sure that paint is going to hold up well with use. I did mine with a two part paint that I believe is more permanent, but not sure. I was also wondering about using the appliance paint that is in a can but that you have to break a seal. pretty sure that comes in Almond but not too sure about UV protection. Might be worth a try.
my 73´ wheel has some little hairline cracks in the paint, is sanding and paint good enough, and what color will i need for a black steering wheel, just black
Yeah I'm going to redo them, thanks!
thank you soo much :)
Awesome, I bought a steering wheel 56-59 just to practice this before I do mine. I got it pretty cheap this past weekend. I have a 1960, where did you get that center clock for the steering wheel?
cip1.com sells em.
i have a black n white photo of the interior of my 54 at xmas 55 and shows the steering wheel but its the same as the one you hav shown in vid as the 56 to 59,do you think that cos its in New Zealand that it would of made a difference Chris?
very good
usually an option
Personally I think it better to increase the size of the crack all the way down to the metal of the wheel so that when you fill the crack is penetrates deeply and has more surface area to bond to. Still a pretty good how to guide :)
Was that clock in the center original? that's cool
Awesome work !!! What grit of sand papers did you use ?? Ty
well you can start with 200 and then go all the way up to 800 or 1000 grit
Chris ... Rustoleum now do two Almond paints one is a "universal all surface" with a trigger spray and the other a "painters touch" with normal spray head ... which should I choose ? also the clear coats seem to have expanded in range ? Thanks
yeah the painters touch is the way to go. No worries about the clear coat, there is clear in the almond.
Brilliant .. thanks for answering :)
Waths de color White almendra yo can tel me
Great video! Do you habe some tips and tricks for restoring a cracked wood steering wheel?
Similar technique you can buy special epoxy that’s for wood such as JB weld
cool
Hey Chris, my 17 year old just purchased a `71 beetle, really decent shape, but one thing that didn't pass state inspection was the turn signal switch. You have to hold it in the "sweet spot" to get the left turn signal to work. Right is ok, it will stay without holding the switch. The steering wheel is also not indexed correctly, could this have something to do with the switch not working properly? If not, just replace the switch, I guess??? Thanks Joe.
Yeah it definitely could be the steering wheel not being on straight, there is a canceling tab behind the wheel. If you readjust it and it still persists, then I would change the switch or at least inspect it.
Awesome. I have one beetle but I also have a Mercedes W115 220D which also has a cracked steering wheel. I want to ask you if this works for other steering wheels too?

Where can I find more information about dashboard styles and models? Some older ones have a vinyl dash and some have a metallic dash. They are very inconsistent, I am assuming people swap them out or something. Which models have the metallic dash?
67 and earlier beetles have the hard dash.
Do you know where I could find a reproduction full batwing does anyone make a new one? thanks....
As of right now I do not think they are repopped. You would have to buy an original one restored.
is steeringwheels from the early 60s in grey rare?
i have spotted one in a swedish junkyard With over hundred VWs and thats the only one that's grey :P
no it should be the batwing wheel
What about if the wheel is bent slightly? My 63 bug wheel is cracked on the sides and due to that Its slightly bent backwards. what would be the best way to get it straight?
Might have to put it in a vice and try bending it straight again.
@@classicvwbugs will try that, thanks for always being quick to reply and interactive with your subscribers.
@@gr2262 Of course! =o) Good luck. If it doesn't pan out, the repops today are pretty good.
Is the process any different for a black wheel? Were they painted originally or should they be when restoring? Mine appears to be black all the way through. I have a 69 Ghia wheel that has some hairline cracks. Thanks
Same process, but the original wheels I believe were casted in a mold, then maybe baked.
@@classicvwbugs cool. Thanks
HOW DO I GET THE NUT OFF THE STEERING WHEEL?
A video on how to remove 1957 steering wheel ?
😊 Fortunately they make duplicate replacement for my '71 SuperBeetle 👌
Hi, how do you take the wheel off? 57beetle here
Pop off the horn button, unscrew horn wire, and there is just( I believe off the top of my head ) a 22mm nut there. Unbolt that, pull the wheel off.
@@classicvwbugs tried. It is veres stuck
Very stuck and difficult do unscrew
Thought I was found something wrong
1 a Chopper berlin west.
This may be a stupid question because I dont know the temperature raiting for the fix it clay. What are your thoughts on powder coating it?
ryan odom Will kill this sterring wheel
The Scale Factory PL good to know, thanks!
You can only powdercoat metals
i have one for sale for parts only
Habla demasido, para un trabajo tan simple.
