My late father was Volkswagen Mechanic at Volkswagen dealership he also was service manager at Central Volkswagen we had a 56 & 3 1966 bugs we never had heat problems i a lot burn ankle as a kid from riding in our beetles.
I bought a 67 beetle new in 1967 in Miami. Two months later I drove to Rochester NY and I can concur that I got plenty of heat even in sub zero temps. The ducts under the rear seat threw out the most heat.
i drive it everyday to work. have never used the heat before though. just bought it this summer. living in florida, heat is not a problem, but in the winter it can get chilly so i'll be using it then. the car sat for twenty years before i bought it. a true barn find.
Thank you so much! I've been trying to find out where the cable for the heat exchanger levers came out, but couldn't find a diagram anywhere. A video is even better!
Thank You Chris, that was a lot of help. Never had a Beetle before and I am living in the Philippines. I only need heat when it rain because my window frog up bad. As far as heat, no need for heat the Philippines never get real cold. Thanks for the help. Steve Hughes
Where the cable breaks at the swivel is probably because of wear and tear but also because the end does not pivot and it works the cable back and forth until it breaks. Same as the pivot ball on the handle of a motorcycle clutch. I suggest that they all be lubricated regularly as a preventative.

My newest Beetle had everything hooked up right but very llimited heat only - turned out that the last owner fitted a new exhaust but didn't remove the cover plates from the top of the exhaust box (where the big hoses connect), so there was VERY limited airflow. They had "please remove before installation" on them but they never got taken/pulled out - so once gone everything worked well again. Hope this is helpful for those scratching their heads!
Awesome tips!! I have to run new cables in my 75 before it starts getting cold. Also remerber to check that nothing is clogging or blocking the fan in the fan shroud. I had a rag in mine last winter and it caused the engine to overheat and I had little to no heat blowing out.

hey Chris, I've been watching your vw videos for a very long time and they've been super helpful, even helping me when I needed to adjust the valves on my bug for the first time but I was wondering if you could make a video involving the windshield what fluid connections, my wipers work, I have the windshield wiper fluid container and everything but it doesn't work when I push the button. it'd be super cool to have that working on my bug especially with all these bugs smearing on my windshield when I drive, I can't just squirt and wipe them off x"D thanks so much Chris and I hope you can make a video about this soon!!

What I'd like to see in this video is the connection between the fresh air hoses and the exhaust/heat exchangers. On my '65, I use couplers that go through the tinware apertures and are sealed by grommets at the top. However, where the couplers meet the exhaust, they just seem to rest on the openers. How do you seal these?
Indeed vw beetles mid 6o's or later with the cardboard tubes from fan housing to heat exchanger have fantastic heat. Better than most cars. You just have to realize that the same fan that cools the aircooled engine, pushes the same air that was used to cool the engine, into the passenger compartment to heat the passenger compartment. You would have no heat if the paper tube that goes from the fan housing to the heat exchanger was damaged, disconnected, or missing. Another possiblity is the thermostat that is under the pushrod tubes next to the right heat exchanger, could not be adjusted correctly, or could be missing, or malfunctioning, causing the flaps in the fan housing to remain open when the engine is cold, causing the engine to take too long to warm up, maybe 15 min to warm up, instead of 3 minutes. The heat will work, but it will take 15 min to warm the car, instead of 5. Or the flaps in the fan housing could be entirely missing, rather than simply stuck open too long. Check the manual for way to adjust the thermostat. Of course the levers on the heat excchangers could be jammed due to corrosion. You'd have to free them up with lubricant so that the cable can move the levers and open the flaps.
Question about the 62 vert... I see you've got the dual port on it with "that" alternator bracket/holder. I found the oil fill you've got there to be a bit of a problem, especially with the breather filter. Have you found the same problems of it being simply a pain in the ass? (oil blow-by)

great video, as always. i turned my heat on the other day in my 67 and it got real hot real quick. the only thing was that it smelled a little funny in the cabin. any danger of there being a problem that could lead to asphyxiation or something? i dont want to pass out while driving with the windows up b/c of exhaust or something bleeding into the heating system, i know that the heat is coming from the engine/exhaust...

Did they use asbestos in these old beetles? Because I heard old cars use asbestos in the brakes etc so I was wondering if they used it in the heating system? That would be pretty worrying if asbestos was blowing in your face. Any thoughts on this?
Okay, just had time to check and I was wrong, it was the RH muffler opening that's at an angle making it impossible to insert the coupler (short end down) without the ridge fouling the tinware and preventing a fit. This made the process counter-intuitive and why I originally thought I was doing this the wrong way. Anyway, I'll get the tinware off later, insert both couplers and see if I can then put the tinware over the top ready for hose coupling.

I´m getting exaust fumes inside the car.I guess it could be the fitting between the muffler and the heat exchangers.My questin is?how much does it matter to have all the sheet metal of the heat exchangers really tight to the pipe thats inside,I mean a small gap could be the reason of exaust fumes coming in?And last but not least please tell me if its possible to take out the heat exchangers from the car without removing the engine,?Thanks.
Installing heater cables, left and right, on a 1978 Beetle Convertible and I made the mistake of not taking a picture of the connection before disassembly. If proper installation is what I'm doing, the cable could be too long.
Hello I have a 69 bug. I am trying to install the cables for the vents under the back seat. I can’t find anything on line on how to do this. Do you know how and what I might need. Or can anyone help
Good video but I wanted him to show the cable hook-ups to the Y tube under the rear seat. My flaps are missing so there is nothing for the cables to control. Heat will come out contuously
+Robert Brownson I have the same problem and will see if I can rob one out of another scrap car or try to fabricate(duplicate) another. Right now, the girlfriend has too many other priorities to be repaired first.
I know I am 5 years late, but the problem is likely your fresh air hoses in the engine compartment. Be carful and make sure the all of the seals are good. If that doesn't solve your problem, then check the heat exchanger for any holes between the box and he exhaust pipe. Hope this helped!

Found my tubes between engine and body clogged with insulation. Replaced with WW metal flex tubes. Massive heat now. All six outlets!

Boy, I wish I'd known this back in 1969 when I bought my 67 beetle. Damn thing was cold as hell and the windshield froze up constantly.

Have you ever restored early Square top heater boxes. If so how did you replace the top spring for the internal flap.
If there is rust in the panels on the way to the front, can you use a pipe to channel to heat to the front?

On the 66 the two levers by the e brake. Which one controls what?
Off the top of my head, left one turns open doors for rear seat area, right side turns heat on.

Yup, insane heat in em. Folks don't maintain their health, never mind car. They usually like cheap exhaust replacement and wonder why no heat too.
