    At 12:10 I said that the Tamron is made of plastic. It isn't - it's actually mostly metal however the section from the focus ring to the front element including the filter thread is plastic. It's similar composition in terms of materials to the Sigma.

    Tamron 35mm 1.4 is the best 35mm present in the market. It has performed better than Canon, Nikon, Sigma and many others hand down. If some one is looking for a 35mm, Tamron deserves a trial.. the choice will then be obvious.

    • @sunnydoga
      @sunnydoga 3 роки тому +1

      @@lifeofapotato4595 Except the price... If L II will costs only 200$ more, I'll say, yes, you'r right. But at this time Tamron is the exceptional fine choice in quality/price parameter and if you aren't super pro photographer, you don't need L II. By the way Tamron have a lowcost dock-station, that can solve problems with autofocusing accuracy at DSLRS at home, and Canon doesn't, only in cammera settings...

    Both lenses seem great. I have fought on whether to get the Tamron 35mm f/1.4 or the Sigma 40mm Art f/1.4 . I went with the Sigma . One reason was the weather sealing . I shoot live music photography and videography. Outside in high humidity I’ve had problems with my Tamron 15-30mm fogging up . I also have a couple Sigma non weathersealed lenses and never had an issue with this fogging problem. Even my best or most expensive Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 e fl vr will fog but never the Sigmas . I’m super hard on my equipment. A lot of heat to cold , cold rain to hot and muggy weather, banging and bouncing around on trucks , trailers and golf carts . The Sigmas just seem tough as nails . The Tamron has been through hell and back too but hasn’t held up like my Nikon and Sigma counterparts. After debating over the Tamron 15-30 or the Nikon 14-24 I wish I’d went with the Nikon . Now that being said this new Tamron 35mm sp f/1.4 is supposed to be the best built Tamron ever . These are my observations with my equipment, others may have a different experience. And to end this I do love the oof (bokeh) rendering with the Tamron. It’s just gorgeous!

      I have and have had the Sigma 18-35 since it first came out . This lens has been my bread and butter on my crop sensor nikon d500 . I absolutely love it . But it’s been a love hate relationship. Before the d500 body I really struggled with af consistency. On a mirrorless body you should have no problems. The focal lenght is super useful, the 18mm end is sublime and the most distortion free 18mm I’ve used . With a 27mm fov equivalent on Nikon it beats out most 28mm even up to the edges being distortion free. I’ve used this lens a ton for video on a SteadyCam and a gimbal . Shooting live music on large stages the people look normal in their perspective even on the edges. You got a keeper and a legend in my book .

    • @MitchLally
      @MitchLally  4 роки тому +1

      I always use external sound. I don’t think on camera shotgun mics are a good solution for anything but scratch audio. Even in run and gun I use lapel mics for the people I’m filming. Having said that they both have some noise. Tamron is the more quiet of the two. I haven’t tested it extensively as it isn’t a massive issue for me.

    When you are shooting against the strong backlit sun like that, are you using spot metering on her face, or are you just adding a bit of compensation until it looked good? Thanks.

    • @MitchLally
      @MitchLally  4 роки тому +3

      Neither. Full manual mode and expose by eye. Metering is less relevant with mirrorless cameras as you can see a representation of your exposure before you take the shot. Over time you learn how to expose based on how the image looks and also to make judgements based off saving highlights vs sacrificing highlights.

    Nice comparison and shots - I'm thinking the Tamron is a bit more contrasty but not much between them. The only thing that puts me off the 1.4 is the size, most subjects will think you're pointing a telephoto at them.

    Hi. Thank you so much for comparative. On a 20mp 6d for me is best sigma. (I had two) Sigma produces a better and cinematic rendering and more neutral and pure color, tamron produce much more warm colors maybe too more dirty. And other apertures than 1.4 sigma may be the same or sharper, always speaking on canon 6d. but I am curious to know if these results, especially in sharpness, can change in cameras with many more megapixels since I have not been able to test this...but on 6d honestly i would stay with sigma, too. I am also curious how the new sigma dg dn compares to this tamron, too bad this new sigma can only be enjoyed at sony, they say the new sigma is better than the old one but i also have my doubts about the color it produces rendering contrast etc because not everything is sharpness. Greetings and thanks! 🙋‍♂️

    • @MitchLally
      @MitchLally  4 роки тому +5

      @@moealyasini2784 I think 50 and 85 are very different. Not a bad thing to have a 50 in the bag. The 1.2 is a crazy lens $$ wise so might be worth trying it for a while and picking between 50/85 once you have more time using it. To me 50 is nice but I prefer using 35 and 85 as my go to focal lengths - they both have really clear uses - 35 for showing some of the background and 85 for isolating the subject. The 50 is kinda in the middle it doesn't really do either of those things super well.

    I bought the Tamron as soon as it came out... what a stunning lens it is, and that opinion is obviously shared by Sigma, which within a week of the Tamron landing on the market, was offering discounts on ther own 35mm. Sadly, for me, the Tamron 35mm and a number of other of their great lenses are having compatibility issues with the Canon R5 and R6 (not the R nor the RP). I did a long session of dance photography with the 70-200mm on Thursday on my new Canon R6 and things seemed to be ok. The 35mm however lags a bit and nulifies the IS on the camera. Tamron put out a press release in July re this particular lends saying they are "working on updates" but I saw yesterday that the company put out another press release late November listing a number of other lenses. Such a pity. I have been a Tamron fan for a while and the 35mm is simply a winner, but a winner facing problems it would seem.

    Thank-you for a very helpful video, Mitch! I am about to "pull the plug" and pick up the Tamron for my portrait photography. I recently picked up the Sigma 50mm 1.4 ART used from KEH, and absolutely love it. So I know and agree with you, that Sigma is no "slouch." But everything I'm reading about the Tamron, including Matthew Saville on SLR Lounge lauds the Tamron as being bang for buck as good (or better) than Canon's EF 35mm 1.4 II. I own the EOS-R, as you utilized in this video. Your tone is upbeat and your video is fun. And I am much more "into" real world use than specs, too. So you really helped me today! I also respect Julia Trotti a ton (below) with her comment, so clearly your comparison was much needed. Mitch, all my best! Please pass along my compliments to your model, too. She is AMAZING! Great natural poses and vibrant as the sun behind her! Scott :)

    Just shooting wide open at 1.4 is all you need to know: the Tamron is nearly double the resolution, ready for the latest sensors. And then the weather proofing seals the deal. Why Sigma didn't properly dust and moisture proof the Art I'll never understand.

    Great review, it's been said in other reviews that a calibration accessory could be another piece you need if deciding to own/purchase the sigma, my question is if the Tamron requires anything similar and or is the lens able to continue to focus without the need of such an accessory?

    • @kevindiaz3459
      @kevindiaz3459 3 роки тому

      Ok, some knowledge...
      What this almost certainly is referring to is the USB dock you can get to go with their lenses. Sigma and Tamron both make one, and it is not required for the lens to focus, it is only required for things like firmware updates, lens calibration, and certain features can be turned on/off/adjusted through it. It is useful to have, I would suggest it if you own Sigma or Tamron lenses. You would need one of each if you own both Sigma and Tamron, since they only work on their own brand. Often BnH and Adorama will include one with a lens; its a frequent deal they offer.
      For the focus adjust, you only need to do this for DSLR cameras. If using a mirrorless, the on-sensor AF system is far more accurate than a DSLR, and thus does not require any kind of adjustment. Same can be said for the liveview of DSLR cameras, as they use a similar system for AF.
