I hope you all enjoy today's video! This was one of the first videos I ever uploaded on my channel, I was so nervous talking to the camera that day haha and like I mentioned, I really felt like that video needed a refresher with some visual examples of how I change settings as you guys still comment on that old video to this day :) So I hope you find this helpful!

Thank you for watching! xx
This is the first manual how-to video I’ve seen that shows the thought process and in-person experience. So much easier to understanf and “see” how things work. Thank you!
Agreed!
Exactly
Thank you so much! Yep my first manual mode video had no examples and I was like... this needs to change! Lol Glad you liked it
This helped me so much and I have been shooting for years taking so much time in my post to make corrections. This is by far the best video I have seen for manual.
Word!! Amazing video, thanks!
WOW! I'm a visual learner with awful ADHD & I hate when people teach without visuals because I can't just learn by listening like other people. But OMG you explained it as if I was there with you step by step WITH visuals AND on the spot teaching! I just learned a lot! Thank you!❤
I’m also ADHD and I agree 100% !!
SAME!!!!!!!!
I'm late to the party but omggg i also have ADHD and her vids have been beyond helpful 👏
No seriously if someone explains something to me I simply cannot understand until I see it 😂
I have ADHD and I felt the same. Such a great, clear and engaging video. Excited to watch more!! 😊
So many people have tried to do this type of tutorial but nobody has made it so easy to understand! Great work!
Would love a Lightroom tutorial on how to get warm/golden (mostly monochromatic) tones! I do family sessions and want to explore this style a little more, it seems to be very popular.
This is so wonderful Julia.. Simple logic.. Well, if there's a tutorial of manual mode in indoors.. It would be great
Thank you! There have been a few requests for an indoor one, so I will work on it :D
Right? Like out of every video out here I understand hers its simple and she shows examples too like THANK YOU BRUH
@@juliatrotti Is indoor video published?
This is amazing! I keep getting confused on how to balance Aperture, ISO, and Shutter Speed, but this explained it so so welll! And as I am starting to pick my camera up again, this served as such a great refresher 🌅🦋🤌🏽✨! Tysm!
I've watched a few videos about manual mode and yours is the best yet! This was so helpful to see it all in action and to understand how you decide to bump up what. This has given me even more confidence as a new photographer to shoot in manual! Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for breaking it down and making it so easy for us photography hobbyists to understand! A lot of other videos get too technical, so this was a great help!
I’m learning so much with you, Julia! Do you think you can do a similar video in-doors? I’m struggling with focus in low-light situations 😭
I wouldn't say better ! Super interesting ! Easy to understand.
Yes, would love an in door video! Like a studio portrait session
Yes please! That is where I need some serious help as well!!!
if you have trouble with focus in low light it might be because you cranked the shutterspeed higher to let more light in? You need to balance those settings.
So handheld shooting you need to have a higher shutterspeed (1/10 or 1/15) to not have blurry pictures. BUT if the picture is too dark open up the apature (lower number is wider open) so if your lens can do f/1.8 you'll get a brighter picture than f/3. imagine the f stop like squinting your eyes. the higher will be sharper but darker.
and keep the ISO as low as you can. indoors though, you'd probably need to use 200-250 ISO
@@Googaliemoogalie thanks for sharing the knowledge ❤ It is appreciated.
Your first video on manual helped me SO much to get started and left me in tears of gratitude, and this one was even better! Excellent explanation of what is often an extremely daunting concept (going from auto to learning to go full manual) for people. So appreciate your videos.
Hi Julia, I Am a beginner at taking photos my husband bought me a 7iii Sony camera. l like to learn how to take photos & videos correctly. I seem just to click away using Automated setting.
Your video is a very good start for me thank you.
Wow I’ve watched countless videos on how to shoot manual and honestly this the first time I’ve fully understand to shoot like this. Amazing video thank you 🙏🏼 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank you so much!
100% Facts. Im officially done watching anyone else. Only @Julia
three things:
(1) You're a great portrait photographer. I like how you edit photos. We learn a lot from your videos.
(2) Oh man, what a great voice and accent. I love it.
(3) Beautiful. Just beautiful.
I’m so glad you decided to re-do this video with your thought process behind changes.
As someone who’s beginner camera can NOT independently adjust all 3 settings in manual AND doesn’t have a live view, this helped explain SO MUCH with shutter speed effecting exposure and just solved 2 problematic photo shoots. THANK YOU!
Most videos make it so complicated but you broke it down WHILE SHOOTING! showing the difference in each setting made a huge difference! Definitely a new subscriber here
oh gosh, even showing it live, i wana cry, you're the best Julia!
Thanks so much for watching!! All photos edited with my Earthy Lightroom Preset Pack of 10 which you can find here: www.digitalfilmactions.com/lightroom-presets#/earthy-lightroom-preset-pack/

Do you have any "Off-Camera" Flash photography examples?
The only girl who is real talented for photography i hv ever seen 😎👌
Nice video!! What lens were you using?
Hi I'm a Photographer from Sierra Leone can I have your WhatsApp number
These videos has very very helpful to me. Thank you sooo much
I am a very visual learner and usually not a lot of photographers that I watch do a really good job when giving step by step directions...you make learning easy for me and I can’t wait to start applying this to my work!
Out of hundreds of videos I researched trying to understand this, yours was the only one explained practically.
Wow, this was so helpful! I love the real life examples as I'm more of a visual learner. Thanks so much for this, Julia!
Thank you!
Im starting this new hobby and as a very newbie
The way you explained aperture, shuuter and iso
Makes it very simple.
Ur heaven sent. ❤️❤️❤️
Having an understanding already of the exposure triangle and shooting manually, I still watched this video because I thought maybe you’d offer a few off-the-cuff pieces of advice while shooting portraits, and you did! Thanks for making a video still worth watching even for someone who’s not totally a beginner!!
Thank you so much!
Same! I always learn something new with Julia.
This video explains manual settings better than any other video I’ve seen so far. Thank you.
I remember watching your first video on this, its how i learned to photograph in manual! 😊🙏🏼
Ahh that’s so awesome to hear!
I learned the hard way today that ISO grains the image bad when set really high! This video was amazing thank you so much
It also depends on how good your camera/sensor is. Don't be afraid of high iso, & keep in mind 😉 We're the only ones who Really understand it. It's alright if it's necessary for you to get the shot & achieve your vision, try and produce the best quality you can but if you need to then raise it, other people don't know what high iso is. You'll be alright.
You are conflating ISO settings with exposure. Higher ISO settings can reduce noise--they never increase noise/grain directly.
High ISO doesn’t grain the image.
It’s the low exposure of the photo that grains it (I.e. lack of lighting in the environment, narrow aperture, fast shutter speed). All the ISO is doing is revealing what’s already there.
This is the best tutorial I have watched explaining the basics for a person brand new to having a camera!!! I loved all of your examples and how you broke them down further and explained why. This was fantastic, and I can't wait to continue to learn from your page! :)
I did my first styled shoot this weekend and this video helped me out sooooo much! The photos I took using your advice blew me away. Just want to thank you for posting such amazing content! ❤️
That's amazing I would love to see the photos
I can truly tell you this is the main video I've found to fully explain those three settings and why / what they mean. I've watched this twice and just made notes. I'm off out today to practice.
What a fantastic tutorial! Easy to follow and so informative. Thank you
This was the BEST beginner video I have watched. My aperture only goes down to F5.0 and my shutter speed only goes up to 1/4000, so this helps in navigating that. I am just starting as a portrait photographer. Actually seeing you doing a shoot and using different settings is so helpful!
Now I need to learn how you manage natural light, what do you see that help you place the model in the right place in terms of lighting
Yesss I want to do this next!
Yes! This is an excellent question that I need guidance in as well. It would really be helpful to know the thought process of subject placement in natural light. The topic would make a great video.
I’m honestly really thankful you gave an example in direct sunlight :) thank you
You are the best photography professor on Earth
I've never learned any other modes than manual. Manual seemed way easier when I was beginning than anything else 😂
Thank you SO much for this video. I'm a visual learner and even with picture examples in other videos I wasn't fully understanding it. Seeing it in motion as you changed the settings finally made it so clear!!
You're a true artist Julia. I'm amazed by how much you feel what you're doing.
Love it, can we have another refresh? Thanks!
Started my portrait photography 4yrs ago, but still love this video 😊😊😊
I've watched sooo many other videos and you explained this so clear and also showed live view with explanation for each setting and why you used that. THANK YOU 🙏🙏
This is exactly what I was looking for!! Real world examples in the field and adjusting controls on the fly. Brilliant.
I wish you made this channel more earlier and I found you years ago . I was in multimedia classes but in the end gave it up bc everything is so overwhelming. It is so new to me and even tho I am interested in photography the teacher wasn’t helpful and then the pressure of studying make me lose confident and photography just seems very scary. Now I am in different fields but do need to re-learn photography for content. I am so thankful in the end I found this channel. Bc it makes me think back how I love it before and still are. I think I am gonna try to take it more seriously now that I am more flexible and how social media offer a lot of tips/lesson like this
I finally understand this concept of how the aperture, ISO, and shutter work together. Thanks Julia for an awesome tutorial :)
This was so helpful for me, ive been struggling to understand but seeing this visual really makes sense. Thank you ❤
Your video was very helpful alot specially for me that I am a beginner in photography. You've explained clearly and I keep watching on this video as my guide in Manual mode. Thank you. God bless.
This might be the best video about photography in general on UA-cam!
You are an awesome teacher! I’ve watched many beginner videos and yours is by far the easiest to understand. Thank you!
Video is far more better than expectations. I must say best video ever on camera usability i had watched.
wow i've never completely understood this until watching this video :)
You are way better than many online platforms . Thank you for the practical examples learnt so much
Aloha from Hawaii.... I noticed that the box in the image was centered over her face. Can you speak to that? And also, can you address the light metering mode? Do you go with evaluative, partial, or center weighted? Could you maybe do a video on light metering in different situations, if you haven't already? I just found your channel. I've been looking through dozens of photography videos over the last few days, trying to learn more about my craft as an amature photographer. Yours so far is the most helpful of all of them since you go step by step and show the actual changes in the image as you change the settings. This is perfect! Subscribed and look forward to checking out more of your videos! Thank you!!
the live tutorial made it SO much clearer. love it, thank you😊
I have nvr seen anyone explain so lucidly..u make it so easy to understand,.. just loovvvveddd it,......☺
This is THE BEST TUTORIAL , as someone with ADHD , you couldn’t have done better than this ! Thank you 🎉❤
Julia, you're SO good at what you do, and I've loved following you. Thank you for being a great teacher. Two questions: 1) Do you always toggle your ONE focus point for focus and 2) Do you use spot OR "evaluative" metering?
Wow, I’ve seen so many Videos about photography but this is literally the best! Now I definitely understand a little more about photography
I've always wanted a nice camera and now I finally got one! It is a little intimidating to use at first, but this video really helped me break it down and understand everything better. Everyone starts somewhere and I'm glad I started with this video! I'm able to post better angles on my Instagram as well and my UA-cam videos when I go out exploring.
Watching this so many months later and it’s still really helpful
You’re an amazing teacher
Great video. The best thing about your content is how you talk to the camera; you are confident and friendly. Excellent skill for a speaker. You know your stuff, but also the way you present is fresh.
I'm a complete rookie to photography (want to do it just as a hobby), your video is very helpful.
This is a great video. I always liked to shoot in manual. My first camera was a Pentax MX which was so manual you could use it without a battery if you had a light meter. I also used a Deardorf and both the shutter and aperture were on the lens. My first automatic camera was a Leica R7. I was industrial photog but eventually migrated to the custom labs and was mostly a mural printer.
I am doing a family photo shoot in a few weeks and I feel this is the perfect video that helps me understand what I need to do. Thank you!
I normally don't comment a lot on videos and since this video is a little older it's a good chance you won't even see this but I wanted to tell you anyway that this video is amazing and it really helped me. I just bought an A7iii and am still learning about my new camera. I'm not a photography pro and I always have trouble understanding what exactly all the settings do for real (I know some in theory but yeah 😅). Your video really explained a lot and it made my puctures a lot better so thanks!! 🥰🥰
The Explanation is very practical and that's what makes Julia's tutorial different from others !!!
Thank you so much! Finally I can understand and see for myself how each setting of the camera actually works.
I already understand these things now, but I watch it anyway because you and Dan are good at presentation and educating. It's one thing to know something yourself and another to teach. This is very good. This would have been amazing when I first started, and I now know what video to recommend to beginners.
I have been watching your videos and appreciate the examples you give us by showing photoshoots in real time.
The format with the live video of the image as you are changing the settings was well done. Nice work!
Thank you so much , I’m new to photography and it’s my first dslr camera , I find it hard to learn by reading and this is the first video I have watched witch actually makes sense , I love the way you explained it while showing us I feel like I have really learned something and I’m slowly watching all your vides now . I could watch you all day you have such a good way of teaching . I will re watch this over and over I’m sure thank you .
Amazing video! I feel like nobody ever actually walks through their process when showing exposure settings. I just got into photography with a Nikon D5000 so I’ve been using manual mode to become more familiar with the exposure triangle and this video confirmed what I was already doing!
Thank you for this video. I was becoming discouraged about being a photographer. This has helped me a lot. I love your videos. I am 4th grade teacher but a passion to become a professional photographer. Hope to learn about when I need lighting, Sony a7iii setting and type of lenses.
Thank you! As a raw beginner this was really helpful. I understood how my Nikons exposure worked in terms of light but this gives me a better understanding of depth of field.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I learned Photography through an online school so learning manual mode is tricky for me. After watching your video, I understood the exposure triangle a lot more and was able to get out of Aperture Priority mode with confidence. I had a shoot today and for the first time I was so confident shooting Manual and my pictures were all properly exposed and sharp!
Just recently got back into photography, I've only been subscribed for a week or so but your content is so good, can't believe we're getting it for free, so much useful information. You also look a bit like Alicia Vikander
Wow this is honestly the most helpful video I have found! I have been doing photography as a hobby for a year now and struggle so much with outdoor shots. I am taking some photos today if my daughter and can’t wait to try these tips out! Thank you for the helpful video!
Great! as a video shooter who on occasion likes to shoot a photo ("likes" meaning "is forced to"), this is very helpful. In video you're almost always stuck with a fixed shutter speed of 48 or 60 due to the demands of natural motion blur. Being able to adjust that shutter speed for photos makes life a lot easier and a lot more flexible.
alas---it is what it is , and never the twain shall meet. Love your videos. thanks you so much.
Thank you so much for examples!!! This was EXTREMELY helpful as a beginner!!
One of the best videos to really learn the ins and the outs of the camera with explanation and visuals, extremely well done!
This is so useful as someone who has only been shooting in aperture priority mode for years. Thank you!!
Thank you Julia for this step by step easy to understand video to venture into the manual mode to create better pictures. You are the Queen of Photography
This is by far the most understandable and clearest explanation I have ever watched! THANK YOUUUU XXXX
Hey Julia. You don't have enough likes for the amount of views you got for this video, but I want to let you know as an up and coming content creator and someone who likes to get that eye candy when taking shots, I've learned hell of a lot from your vids. The examples really helped a lot. Thank you!
More of this please ! This was so great, first video I’ve seen that broke it down so simply and live examples
The best thoughtful tutorial about shutter speed, Aperture and ISO💯Thank you for sharing.
Only walkthrough I could fined on UA-cam. Super helpful for a beginner!
I agree with the other comments. The way this was produced to being visibly able to see what is happening within manual mode was great.
this is by far the most helpful and straight forward explanation 👍🔥
Thank you for sharing! I recently started to study Photography and watching your videos in the process is been so much easier for me to learn. Thank you again!!!
Your channel is my favorite. I saw your original manual mode video and it was partly what encouraged me to go after my dream!
I’m a beginner and your suggestion to think of aperture priority is excellent. I shoot in AP frequently. So your suggestion will give me what I need to try manual more than I currently do. Thanks for this video. It will help me immensely. And if you do one for indoor and/or night shooting that would be great.
this was hands down the best video explaining ive seen so far. thank you so much! subscribed
Julia. Your videos are always very helpful and it's simple to understand. Keep posting more .... I learned a lot from your videos.
Yess this helps me so much. Coz i face so much problem while outdoor shoots but i think problems are over now.. 😍💝😍💝😍 Thank you so much for this steps 🥰❤️🥰
This is the best tutorial video I’ve seen yet. So thankful for you!
the best video so far! - beginner SOOOOOO INFORMATIVE, organized, scientifictastic!
Finally - someone who can teach me the basics!! Thank you so much, have subscribe and will be following for sure.
Can you point me in the direction of taking these shots on dark UK days please. Also for indoor fashion shots too.
Omg..this is sooooooo easily explained. One out of a thousand I have seen
This video was so helpful. Your demonstrations on how u expose your pictures was spot on to help me. Thank You. ✌️
The examples were amazing so we can see what it will actually do. It makes more sense to me than just hearing "more light will come in" etc. Thank you so much for this! Plan on getting the s5 soon!!
Thank you, glad you liked it!
I like the way you explain it. I'm starting to learn and enjoying my camera. Doing example shots inside the house playing around the settings in manual mode. Thank you
Not just the content, but the tone of the video (the "atmosphere") is sooo perfect, it makes studying easy :) Thanks for the great video...now I just need a good camera hahah.
This was so straight to the point and exactly what I wanted to see!
