Many thanks Dustin. I’ve been watching every one of your 35mm f1.4 reviews, and I bought the Tamron yesterday. Your videos are a fantastic service, and highly enjoyable to boot.
I just got my Tamron 35 f1.4 for Nikon yesterday, 04-17-2020. I had no intentions of buying but Tamron is until Sunday offering 200.00 off at B and H, bringing the lens down to 699.00 and my local camera dealer took an extra 75.00 dollars off, bringing it down to 625.00 plus tax, around 666.00 all in. I ordered it and drove there and the guy bought it out to me. Tamron out did themselves with this lens and they showed what they can do when they want to do it. Great review Dustin as always.
I thought this was a mediocre review of what amounts to one of the best 35mm AF lenses ever made. I don't mean that Dustin didn't review the lens well, but he never says that this is an amazing lens. It's just an okay lens, better than the Sigma, not as good as the Canon, etc. I completely disagree and I immediately sold my Nikon 35mm f1.4G lens after testing this lens for a week straight. I'm not sure what is wrong with Dustin, but this is an astoundingly good lens and possibly the best 35mm I have ever used. I think it deserves much higher acclimation and this is the first and ONLY review where someone gives this lens a mediocre review. Everyone else who has reviewed this lens would disagree.
Tamron released a firmware update for the lens so it now works with Canon R5 IBIS. Took them a while but I'm very happy the functionality is finally available.
I admired his analysis and candid guide with detail information. It is my pleasure to read his site article and lens as well as camera review. His resource information is very important to decide for my lens purchase
Great review as always. I am really loving this lens on my D810. Tamron is really knocking it out of the park. I changed my trinity of lenses over to the G2 range and have never regretted it. One of my first ever lenses was an older Tamron zoom that I never got on with. I was initially reticent to buy another, but reviews like this helped to change my mind for the G2 line. Never looked back. Keep up the good work, Dustin.
Great job in capturing and pointing out the reliability of the focus of the lenses. Thank you for giving great content that helps us make critical decisions in purchasing camera gear. keep up the good work. Cheers!
I bought this lens and have already done a fashion shoot and 2 events, it has been great. I have also used it for landscape and basically anything :) I tend to use two lenses in my work, 35mm and 85mm primes :) I'm known to move around a lot :)
Mt favorite walk-around lens for my Canon is Tamron's 24-70mm f2.8 G2 and your sample images from this one remind me of it. The rendering or "pop" is very similar and even looks like the images were run through a small amount of "dynamic contrast" (from ON1's software) instead of being straight out of camera. Very impressive. By comparison my Sigma lenses, while sharp, just seem flat(er).
I've been using primes for the last 5 years, some high end and budget . I bought the 24 70 tamron g2 and thought I had a bad copy . After a couple of swaps I realised that I'm just used to the IQ of primes .
I'm going to try and rent both the 24-70 G2 and the 35 1.4, I think this is what my next purchase will come down to. You assessment of Sigma is spot on, only reason I don't have a 35 prime is I haven't found the correct one so far. There's the Ziess but, I have two MF lenses and I think that's plenty for me. Need something with reliable AF.
Great review, Dustin! Thank-you SO much! I am about to spring for this lens, and your info and comprehensive details truly made a difference! All My Best! Scott :)
Great review as usual. 35 mm is my favourite FL. I am a happy Tamron customer. Being budget conscious, I consider their products bang for bucks. Among their lenses I have also the 35 1.8VC which is extremely versatile and I am planning to keep for travel/close up photography, but seen your review I could not resist and I bought the 1.4 too. Your beautiful shots show clearly how 1.4 lenses have a touch of magic that slower lenses just don't have. I'll receive the lens soon, can't wait to try it. Thanks again, keep up the great job .
Hiya Dustin, Thank you for this fantastic series of reviews. I assume your AF tuning using a controlled focus field scale? Do you think you would have achieved better results with a Tap In? I'm debating between this and a 24-70 G2 to replace my Nikkor 24-120. Thing is, with a 15-30G1, Voigtlander 58, CZ 85 and a Nikkor 70-200, I'm fairly adequately covered in terms of focal range. What I don't have is a wider autofocus for portraits. If the AF is good for capturing toddlers in the Jungle Gym, around the house and in parks, I might decide to go for the prime IQ for landacapes over the 24-70 and retain the 24-120 as a back up lightweight travel solution to my Fuji XT30 kit.
I think you could achieve slightly better focus results with using the Tap In, though, as I mentioned, my actual real world focus results were very good.
Mirrorless cameras do not require focus calibration and have a much broader spread of AF points across the frame, which gives you greater flexibility in focus.
Great review! Much appreciated. An obviously great lens but I am likely going to stick with my 1.8 for now. Close focusing and good max mag are main reasons I got this lens over the Sigma. Those factors remain important to me. The center sharpness is fine for me at least. It focuses amazingly well on my D610. So, hard to let all of that go!
If you’re happy with what you have, that’s what matters most. The 1.4 is a much bigger lens, and, while it’s optically superior, you do pay a price for that.
Hey Justin, if were spending your money, would you choose this over the SP 35 f1.8 $599 or 45 f1.8 $399. Is the image quality worth the difference in price... And would not image stabilization have a factor in your choice?
Hey hope you see this message. Just stumbled across this series on search for a 35. I shoot alot of pictures with high contrast Is there any difference is loca because of the br element? Does maybe one have no loca at all or both to the same degree? Thanks in advance!
Hey Dustin, great review! Just wondering if you feel the Tamron 1.4 is worth the extra dollars as opposed to its younger 1.8 brother in terms of autofocus and build? Or are they similar?
Hey Dustin, in your experience with using this lens on your Canon DSLRs, did you have any issue with focus accuracy using edge autofocus points? I have this for Nikon F mount, and really only find it usable to use the center point and focus and recompose. All the outer points just don't work, front focusing like crazy. Maybe this is normal or I'm not sure. Center point af fine tuned nails, but just frustrating using it for moving people as you can't really focus and recompose when people are changing depth/distance. Thanks!
I did use it on my DSLRs, but that’s been one of the main advantages of moving to mirrorless. You just don’t think about the inaccuracy with other focus points anymore. I don’t recall having serious issues, but it has also been 4+ years since doing that review.
Hey Dustin, Great video. I have 5DM4 and confused between Sigma 35 f1.4 and Tamron 35 f1.4. Would you please advise and make my life easier. Thanks in advance.
@@brandonj8018yeah sorry about that. I forgot to delete the comment. When I watched the whole video then I got to that point. Anyways, already ordered the lens :) Thanks for your comment though.
Hello Dustin! Regarding this vs a Canon 35 1.4 L ii, price aside, would you say the Canon still has some advantage at CA from this special BR optics glass inside? I'm so torn between the Tamron and a used Canon because they seem soooo similar. My main concern remains CA as I want those lenses for nighttime 1.4 shots, for example on vacation in Tokyo with lots of bright lights. Thanks for any input on this subject - from watching the videos alone it seems the Tamron doesn't have problems in that regard but Canon just markets this BR optics so prominently.
I actually haven't tested the lens adapted on Canon RF mount, so I can't comment. It's much better optically than the RF 35mm F1.8, but I don't know if it works flawlessly.
Really really thank you for this perfect review. Can I ask a question: Im looking forward for a 35 mm lens for still and video captures. This lens dosnt have VC and has sometimes problems in auto focus but I know Its a winner! Can you help me to choose between It and canon 35mm f2 Is?! I will be so thankful!
Hi Dustin, thanks for the great review. I know some of the photos were shot by Sony through the MC-11. I wonder if the lens aslo works well with MC-11 in continuous AF shooting?
It's not flawless, Patrick. Periodically the autofocus (and even camera) will hang. It didn't work as well as my Canon lens, for example, when adapted. It's a shame, as this is a brilliant lens.
Tamron 35mm F1.4 vs f1.8 vs 45mm f1.8... I'm having a difficult time deciding between these three! Obviously a major price difference between the 1.4 and the 1.8s... But is the 1.4 worth it over the 1.8? And is the 35mm regarded better than the 45mm? I'm filling a gap in my lenses: Tamron 10-24mm; Nikkor 85mm f1.8G; Sigma 150mm Macro; Nikkor 200-500mm F5.6 Thinking the 35 or the 45 would be a nice slot between the 10-24 and the 85... Thoughts anyone?
If I were buying, it would be the 35mm F1.4. It's a very special lens and, while a bit more expensive, one of the best price-to-performance lenses on the market.
Hi Dustin, Love all your honest reviews. I just got a EOS R5 and the Tamron 35mm 1.4. It seem there is a problem with image stabilization compatibility. The Tamron web site states "The SP 35mm F/1.4 Di USD (Model F045) for Canon EOS R5...The Image Stabilizer of the camera cannot be set and also will not function". Do you have any insight into when this issue may be solved?
I don't know for sure, but there are a number of lenses affected like this. Firmware updates will solve things, but I don't for sure when they will arrive.
@@greenlook86There has been a firmware update to solve the issue, though you need to buy tamron's dock to do the update. It's called the tap in console and costs around 40$.
I can't comment on the 1.4, but all of my Tamron lenses have focused perfectly in my Nikon cameras. The 35 1.8 is especially accurate. There is every reason to believe the 1.4 will be as good or better. There is the tap in console if any adjustment is needed. I have not needed to use the console for either my 100-400 or my 35.
@@franzcarmona79 I was only addressing your question about the af of the 35 1.4. I have no experience with the Sigma 40. Reports I have read say it is spectacular. Worth looking at other factors like weight and expense as well as sheer image quality I think. Even so, Roger Cicala of Lensrentals says the Tamron 35 1.4 is the best 35 made now. Dustin obviously likes it, too. So, not shabby.
I bought this lens and on my Canon R it make an error conection every 20-30 shots. I need to rurn off the camera and turn on again, the moment is gone and it is very disapointing...
Dustin it would be really useful and informative if you could post an update video on how this lens performs when adapted on camera such as the EOS R. Since the EF to R adapter from Canon provides native compatibility and the AF works on the sensor plane, it could mean that this lens has great accuracy and consistency, in that specific combo. Would you consider making that test and let us know on the results?
So I just got this lens last week for $699 from B&H (Feb 2023), but it looks used instead of new that I paid for, so I'm returning it. Anyway, I was trying to manual focus it when I suddenly sneezed, my quick instinct was to hold the lens in my fingers tighter so it won't slip and fall. I was surprised, the rubber on the manual focus ring got dislodged. It easily comes off... now I'm questioning the longevity of this lens. I couldn't f8nd any update from users...
@@DustinAbbottTWI I'm alao surprised. I used to own the Tamron 90 macro back in the days without issue. Anyway I ordered again, this time from Adorama, but it is on back order. But you are right, the lens is sharp at 1.4, and gets a little better stopped down. I wish Tamron would loan the lens to reviewers for a year or two, or even give them away.
Hi @Dustinabbot , great review , just want a advice from you , is that lens is acceptable for canon5d mark 4 for fast moving objects , basically I do weddings ??
Hi Dustin, thank you for your reviews. They are really useful for my decision. i have the 45 SP 1.8 and it's really good but suffers of cromatic aberration. What could you tell me about this 35? Regards Giulio
Hi Giulo, if you've watched review series, you have my thoughts fairly completely. This is a more premium lens in every way than the 45mm F1.8. CA will not be a problem.
I'd love to get the Canon 35 f/1.4II L for my 6D and 5Ds but cost is an issue for me. Currently in January 2022 the Tamron 35 f/1.4 is $899.00 from major camera stores and I've seen a few in LN condition on eBay for less than $600.00 which is tempting me. I think optically the Tamron would satisfy all my needs, I don't think the Canon which costs $1799.00 at B&H and Adorama is $900.00 better than the Tamron.
Hi Dustin, great review as usual. I have one question about adapting this lens via the MC 11 to Sony. I have many EF lenses and third party EF lenses and I use the MC 11 on my Sony A9 and I find the results excellent. In particular results with the new Tokina 50mm/f1.4 Opera are fantastic. I am wondering when you make you comments about adapting, do you use the A9 as I think the AF is in another league compared to other Sony cameras?
@@DustinAbbottTWI, Thanks Dustin, If you can I would wait for the rumoured a9II. IMHO the V5 firmware on the Sony a9 has made it the best AF camera there is. Obviously Sony native glass works better, however everything I have from 14mm to 600mm works pretty darn well on this camera. I am hoping Canon can produce an a9 type body so we can really get the benefits of instantaneous tracking like Sony native glass on an a9 which is special to experience.
Hi Dustin, I love all your videos that interest me, they are very thorough. I want to ask a question if you can. 1. Does this 35mm focus accurately with mid and outer focus point. 2. I had an issue with the tamron 24-70mm where at 2.8 (especially 70mm) when fine tuned with tapin console, would back focus a lot more at f5.6 and beyond and almost very little towards the front - I believe its called spherical aberration (focus shift) - does this lens exhibit anything like this ? Would appreciate your comments thanks.
I don't recall seeing focus shift with the lens, but remember that I've probably reviewed near 100 lenses since this one, so my memory might not be flawless. If I had seen it, I would have reported it.
The Canon 35mm 1.4 II is rated by Lensrental as the best build quality they have ever tested i'd buy the Canon over this but it looks like a great budget option!.
That's somewhat true (LensRentals had more caveats than what you've cited), but you're also looking at an article that is 4 years old. Time didn't freeze in 2015; it is possible for companies to improve build even past the gold standard.
Im planning on selling my EF 24-70 f2.8 II to get this Tamron 35 f1.4 and the Tamron 85 f1.8... Thats the focals I use the most, and that rendering is wow
@@DustinAbbottTWI Sometimes, with the Tamron on the Camera, the camera locks up and writes "Err" on the top Display. Then i have to shut down the Camera and its back to normal. This appears very rarely altough.
Great review, classy as usual, I must say this lens suits you ;) Now on sale for $699 USD + a free Tap-In Console at adorama, so I jumped on it. I owned the 35 1.8 VC on my Nikon D700 when it first came out, loved it, but ended up selling my Nikon stuff when I switched back to Canon. Since upgrading to a 1D MK IV from my 7D I have been looking for a 35mm. Was about to buy a Used 35mm 1.4L (first one) for $650. Decided on this lens instead. I think VC is overrated, I never used it. Would love to see Tamron apply this design approach to an 85mm 1.4 or 1.2, I would pawn my wedding ring for it.... my Canon 85 1.8 is long overdue for an upgrade!
Oh also thank you for such a phenomenal review. Absolutely phenomenal job . I do need a lens in this range 35-40 mm this is why I ask about the sigma 40 art . This one is definitely on my radar Thanks again
The sigma art 40mm 1.4 is flawless. Legitimately resolves 50mp in the corners wide open. It's Zeiss Otus level. This 35mm is very very good, though, but I think nothing yet quite touches the 40mm 1.4. Besides the Otus 55mm.
This may seem a little mercenary, but I'd probably say Canon for one reason: resale value. If you get an exceptional price on a used Canon, you have pretty much guaranteed that if you decide to sell in the future, you might even make a little money rather than lose it.
@@DustinAbbottTWIYou're sitting on the chair with the inspiring environment around you - the way how you have space above you and cut off your legs - for me feels a little too early.
I doubt that, as the market is still very large for DSLRs, but I wouldn't be surprised to see more lenses in terms of quantity coming for mirrorless moving ahead.
@@DustinAbbottTWI good to know. Hope they make another iteration of the 45mm. Maybe 1.4. The AF seems faster in their newer glass (85mm VC, G2s) compared to the great 35mm 1.8 VC and 45 1.8 VC

I only tested it briefly on the EOS R and haven't had one in my hands since the release of the R5 and R6. It should work fine, however.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks
Hey Dustin, great review! Just wondering if you feel the Tamron 1.4 is worth the extra dollars as opposed to its younger 1.8 brother in terms of autofocus and build? Or are they similar?
I definitely do. It's one of the best 35mm lenses ever made.
Hey Dustin,
Great video.
I have 5DM4 and confused between Sigma 35 f1.4 and Tamron 35 f1.4. Would you please advise and make my life easier.
Thanks in advance.
He just said he’d choose the Tamron.
@@brandonj8018yeah sorry about that. I forgot to delete the comment. When I watched the whole video then I got to that point. Anyways, already ordered the lens :)
Thanks for your comment though.
As mentioned, I definitely prefer the Tamron.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you Dustin :)
Great review. I wanna to ask, currently I have canon 35mm f1.4 mark 1, should I upgrade to this?
I would.
I love the Canon, as you know, but I was hard pressed to find a place where the Tamron wasn't as good.
Dustin, the lock up that you mention is only on the a73 when adapted? Or does it happen also in the canon?
Only adapted to the a7RIII
Hi Dustin, again, likes from Jakarta. How's this lens vs RF 35mm F/1.8? Do you encounter issue with this lens adapted to Canon mirrorless (R5 etc)?
I actually haven't tested the lens adapted on Canon RF mount, so I can't comment. It's much better optically than the RF 35mm F1.8, but I don't know if it works flawlessly.
Really really thank you for this perfect review. Can I ask a question:
Im looking forward for a 35 mm lens for still and video captures. This lens dosnt have VC and has sometimes problems in auto focus but I know Its a winner!
Can you help me to choose between It and canon 35mm f2 Is?!
I will be so thankful!
I would find it hard to recommend any 35mm over this Tamron. It is fantastic.
By now, October 3rd 2020, have you use it on your Canon EOS R?
I haven't, as I only had a loaner of this lens.
So brass tax, How much better is this over the Tamron 35 1.8 VC?
Sharper, better bokeh, better color, poorer magnification.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Wow, Tamron has really stepped up their game these past couple of years!
I'm filling a gap in my lenses:
Tamron 10-24mm; Nikkor 85mm f1.8G; Sigma 150mm Macro; Nikkor 200-500mm F5.6
Thinking the 35 or the 45 would be a nice slot between the 10-24 and the 85...
Thoughts anyone?
If I were buying, it would be the 35mm F1.4. It's a very special lens and, while a bit more expensive, one of the best price-to-performance lenses on the market.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for the quick reply!
It also locks up on the eos r and the canon adapter. It works fine if you restart.
I'm hoping that firmware will help with that. I would LOVE to see this lens' optics in a mirrorless lens.
Hello did you solve that?
@@greenlook86There has been a firmware update to solve the issue, though you need to buy tamron's dock to do the update. It's called the tap in console and costs around 40$.
Hi Dustin Abbott! Thanks for the review. I want to know about the performance of the lens in astrophotography.
I didn’t get an opportunity to test that.
what about this lens with Nikon Cameras, i want to know if the autofocus is better than canon cameras.
Someone else will have to chime in. I don't do Nikon reviews.
@@DustinAbbottTWI and this tamron vs sigma art 40mm f1.4??
I can't comment on the 1.4, but all of my Tamron lenses have focused perfectly in my Nikon cameras. The 35 1.8 is especially accurate. There is every reason to believe the 1.4 will be as good or better. There is the tap in console if any adjustment is needed. I have not needed to use the console for either my 100-400 or my 35.
@@lsaideOK i hope so, but the sigm art 40mm f1.4 i m think is pretty good too
@@franzcarmona79 I was only addressing your question about the af of the 35 1.4.
That is disappointing. There may be a firmware update to correct for that behavior, however. I would reach out to Tamron and ask them.
Bought one on monday, love it already 😉. The rest is said in the review
Not surprised you are loving it.
Is it working well with z6? Which new tamron lens will you suggest? 35-150mm? 24-70? Thanks. I have nikon 24-70 2.8 without vr.
I don't review Nikon, so I don't know the answer to your first question. If you have the 24-70, then the 35-150 might not a nice compliment.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I want to sell 24-70mm 2.8 want to buy 35-150mm instead :)
Would this focus better with a mirrorless ? IE the EOS R?
Almost certainly. Most wide aperture glass does.
Hi George, a couple of problems; I own neither an EOS R or this lens, so that video probably won't be happening.
@@DustinAbbottTWI :( oh well.... Thanks for replying though :)
Is it good enough with eos R ??
I haven't tested the combo, but I would assume yes
So I just got this lens last week for $699 from B&H (Feb 2023), but it looks used instead of new that I paid for, so I'm returning it. Anyway, I was trying to manual focus it when I suddenly sneezed, my quick instinct was to hold the lens in my fingers tighter so it won't slip and fall. I was surprised, the rubber on the manual focus ring got dislodged. It easily comes off... now I'm questioning the longevity of this lens. I couldn't f8nd any update from users...
That's very surprising. I've owned a lot of Tamron lenses long term and have never had that kind of issue.
I can't believe I'm rewatching this review. I have since returned that lens and strongly considering getting another 😂.
Nice looking lens! Do you think its likely that Tamron will be doing the same with an 85mm 1.4 anytime soon in the near future?
That’s a good question, but not one I have an answer to. I think they are very capable of producing a fantastic 85mm.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Fingers crossed they do before my next trip. If not then 1.8 it is...
Stellar as always!
Thank you!
Hi @Dustinabbot , great review , just want a advice from you , is that lens is acceptable for canon5d mark 4 for fast moving objects , basically I do weddings ??
It should work fine.
Thanks for the great review !~
You're welcome!
The bokeh looks great. Really nice lense.
It really is!
Ok i'm sold! looks a cracking lens and due to the price and performance, I would definitely favour it over the Canon version!
Great price to performance ratio, for sure.
This is an amazing lens for the money.
I don't own an A9 (I'm considering one, though). I have heard focus results are better.
Great revue, love the image girl with sweater! I was sure that this lens was really good you just confirmed my suspicion.
It is extremely good.
Better for the price is the Tamron...and it's newer then your citation. Pay a 100% more for 2% more output? Not me😉
Is it much better than the 1.8?
I would say yes
Why not just use it on a proper mirror less body aka Sony / EOS R? Wouldn't it eliminate any focus inconsistencies?
If you actually watched the review, you’ll note that I did that a fair bit and reported on it.
Im planning on selling my EF 24-70 f2.8 II to get this Tamron 35 f1.4 and the Tamron 85 f1.8...
Thats the focals I use the most, and that rendering is wow
It is wow.
Same Error issue on my Tamron 35mm f/1.8 on a Nikon D800E
What error issue is that?
@@DustinAbbottTWI Sometimes, with the Tamron on the Camera, the camera locks up and writes "Err" on the top Display. Then i have to shut down the Camera and its back to normal. This appears very rarely altough.
I didn't encounter that error on a native mount camera, but only when adapting it to a third party camera (Sony)

I would love to see a lens like that, too.

I agree
Oh also thank you for such a phenomenal review. Absolutely phenomenal job .
I do need a lens in this range 35-40 mm this is why I ask about the sigma 40 art . This one is definitely on my radar
Thanks again
The sigma art 40mm 1.4 is flawless. Legitimately resolves 50mp in the corners wide open. It's Zeiss Otus level. This 35mm is very very good, though, but I think nothing yet quite touches the 40mm 1.4. Besides the Otus 55mm.
Lets say this tamron is £899 and the canon 35 F1.4 L II is £999 in immaculate 2nd hand condition. Which would you buy?
This may seem a little mercenary, but I'd probably say Canon for one reason: resale value. If you get an exceptional price on a used Canon, you have pretty much guaranteed that if you decide to sell in the future, you might even make a little money rather than lose it.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thank you. I did have the tamron 45 1.8 vc before, sold it to fund something else and made a loss, so what you say makes sense.
Kindly compare this to tamron 35mm 1.8

@@DustinAbbottTWI good to know. Hope they make another iteration of the 45mm. Maybe 1.4. The AF seems faster in their newer glass (85mm VC, G2s) compared to the great 35mm 1.8 VC and 45 1.8 VC
