  • With rents and council house waiting lists at record highs, more and more working people in England are finding themselves homeless.
Of those who became homeless in England in 2022, one in four households had at least one person in work.
New data released today reveals 72,790 households where someone has a full or part time job became homeless or were threatened with homelessness.
For those in full time work, the numbers facing homelessness at the end of 2022 increased by 22% compared to the same period two-years-ago.

There's a simple logic that makes relocating to solve housing problems not an option for most people in these times. If somewhere is more affordable, and those places are few and far between in the UK, it's likely because the employment opportunities and general economic situation of that area mean it's most likely not somewhere worth relocating to. The UK isn't like the US where because of it's size different states/large areas have differing economies that are somewhat detached from each other. The UK is small and compact. London area asides, from top to bottom there isn't much difference in the economic situation and living costs between different parts of the country. In short if you're at a level where you're struggling in one part of the country it's more than likely you'll struggle just as much in another part.

I think a housing crash is happening because all those people who bought homes over asking price, although it was at a low interest rate, they are over their heads. They have no equity if the housing prices continue to go down, and if for whatever reason they cannot afford the house anymore and it goes into foreclosure because even if they try to sell, they will not make any money. I think this will happen to a lot of people especially with the massive layoff predicted for the future and the cost of living rising at a high speed.

The new mortgage rates are crazy, add to that the recession and the fact that mortgage guidelines are getting more difficult. Home prices will need to fall by a minimum of 40% (more like 50%) before the market normalizes. If you are in cross roads or need sincere advise on the best moves to take now its best you seek an independent advisor who knows about the financial markets.

The fact that there is already an excessive amount of demand awaiting its absorption, despite how everyone is frightened and calling the crash, is another reason why it is less likely to occur that way. 2008 saw no one, at least not the broad public, making this forecast, as I'll explain below. The ownership rate was noted to have peaked in 2004 in the other comment. Having previously peaked in the second quarter of 2020, we are currently at the median level. Between 2008 and 2012, it dropped by 3%, and by the second quarter of 2020, it had dropped from 68 to 65.

This is happening all over the world. In Toronto, Canada where I live, a one bedroom apartment is $2500-3000/a month. The fact that there is very little affordable housing for lower middle, working class and folks at or below the poverty line in so many countries is criminal.
I am a supply teacher and make a decent living, and I can't get an apartment to save my life. I now live in a room in a condo sharing with a couple and their baby, paying 40% more than my original rent. I was evicted, to no fault of my own, by my landlord because they want more money for my studio apartment.

    • @susango123
      @susango123 11 місяців тому +18

@@anneroy4560 it depends on the province. I live in Ontario, and here rent control only applies to rental units that were built before November 15, 2018. So, any new builds have no rent control. So, many tenants have been scammed by landlords with huge rental increases after the yearly lease is up. Also, if a tenant moves out of a unit that does have rent control, the landlord can raise the rent to anything they want. Right now in Toronto, a one bedroom is anywhere from $2200-3000/a month.
Unfortunately, long standing tenants are being evicted, because landlords have found a loophole in the tenant laws. One of them is taking back the unit for personal use or relatives moving in. The other is renovations where they want you to move out in hopes that the tenant doesn't know the laws on renovations, by getting them to sign an agreement to move out with zero compensation. The compensations are negotiating keys for cash deal or returning to the unit after renovations are complete at the same rental rate.
Sorry, for the long explanation, but I wanted to be thorough in my answer to your question.

I'd rather be homeless, and walk our beautiful country till it naturally takes me, than be a systematic slave to this completely corrupt economy that dies alone, paying for places I can barely live in & never wanted for another 40 years. (Which they'll probably arrest me for as wildcamping is also illegal).
It's even worse for Independants that have no family or support structures to rely on for a Care Of Address or guarantor. As an independant we literally have NO chance. I'd love to live in a van, but in order to live in that van I'd have to rent or own a home just to use for the address, it's absurd. So if you as a dependant, who has family or friends that support you, & you still feel trapped, just imagine how trapped independants feel. For example: The couple in this video who live in the renovated caravan, are only able to do so because someone is supporting them and letting them use their care of address. We had two cats at the time, and 3 months to find the money to clean his flat, find another flat that would take pets, and pay the new deposit and moving costs. We found somewhere in the nick of time that took pets, in a village near Cambridge. We couldn't afford Cambridge anymore. Our rent is going up every year, our bills are through the roof. Between just me and my husband we can't afford the rent long term, oh and we also have our first baby on the way. Despite our local council knowing all of this (charnwood borough) they refuse to help us as they don't see us as priority. Technically every family and their ancestors should be accumulating wealth, property, tools, skills and wisdom.... which should then be "wisely" divided amongst children once the parents pass away. At this stage in human history the wise families are able to provide their children with everything needed to survive easily. If for whatever reason you are struggling then one of the following has happened:
      1) Your parents OR one of your ancestors either made foolish mistakes resulting with great losses
      2) Your parents OR one of your ancestors were robbed of most of their wealth

I’ve seen rents for shared houses go up 50% or more in less than 3 months. A room I once lived in went from £550 in 2019 to £800 in 2023 (45% increase) I moved as it wasn’t a good place. The room had just one electrical socket and it was cold. The shower didn’t work properly. In my current house rents have gone up 18% over 4 years. My wages in that time have gone up 16%. I’m one of the lucky ones as my last 2 pay rises were above average. But it I had not moved my rent would be unaffordable. In 2010 my mum said she needed a certain salary to cover the basics - mortgage, bills, and food. Adjusted for inflation I earn more than that now and can’t afford to rent on my own. We are going backwards as a country. We need council homes for everyone again. Sadly thatcher made everyone believe council housing is for a certain type of person. We need to bring empty properties back into use and stop the rise of holiday let’s, Airbnb, and second homes. We also need to build more council homes and in private investment builds set a quota of 60% affordable and the test is a person who earns less than 70% of an areas median wage being able to afford it

There should be an independent adjudication board that landlords need to go through if they want to increase their rent pricing, and this adjudication should include the current rentees (if they wish to continue living there once their current contract expires, as it should not be possible to increase rents during a contractual period). At the same time, the rentees can put across any issues or failings with the property. Everything is above board and legal, giving both parties more security and can be used as a go-to board to weed out rogue renters/rentees. Just one idea that might help, not everyone of course, but......

While attempting to save a deposit I've been renting a small apartment on the second floor within a South London house converted into 9 flats. The rent is over £2500.00 per month including zero. On top of rent, I have to pay council tax, water, electricity, gas bills etc. plus random £300.00 to Marsh and Parsons (the agents) every time they decide they want cash. They never tell me what the payment is for, only that if I don't pay I'll be thrown out. I paid 6 months rent in advance yet still needed a ton of paperwork to prove I could pay. How's anyone meant to save for a deposit? I've already spent £45,000.00 on rent in just 18 months 😭

dude 45k in 18months? You need to commute from somewhere cheaper, lnd is a scam but I pay £585 w/o bills. I know roommates are a pain but you may have to consider that too, moving abroad may be drastic but if you get a remote job (if your line of work allows it) you could even live cheap in Spain with a British wage. Our government sucks but we’ve got to find ways to be tactical

Sorry but your agents sound dodgy and if possible consider moving to another area, example you could further south, half your rent and take a fast (non stop) train into work. If possible be open to other opportunities, that £45k would definitely lead to a good deposit or safety net if things continue to rise in the next 9 to 12 months 🤞. Good luck!

A yacht is a privilege, a private jet is a privilege, a mansion same thing a privilege. However, a roof over your head is a right. If governments of any level complain about homelessness, they should all understand as well as the public that being homeless is not always about choice. Nor is homelessness a one demensional problem.

🚩Have you all noticed how the richer countries such as America, England, Australia, New Zealand and France etc had stopped building social housing before the pandemic happened and now these countries have 'working class homeless people'.
The wages don't go up but food, petrol, rents, transport fares, electricity, gas etc etc go up on a weekly basis.
Let us get honest here, this is planned...this is no accident or fault of the pandemic. Social housing is being sold to investors and no new social housing is being built. Migrants are flooding in to these countries when they already have a housing crisis. Landlords have become greedy beyond belief and there is a rise in slumlords. The rents keep rising but there is bare to no maintenance done in these private rentals.
It's getting very close to Anarchy cos noone is controling the unfair prices on things. Something's got to give and it wont be pretty.
