      Latin origins of French and Spanish words:
      panis = bread
      lac (lactem in the accusative) = milk
      * framboise / frambuesa = of Germanic, not Latin, origin
      camba = of Vulgar Latin origin, meaning 'leg'
      vinum = wine
      * patate / patata = of Haitian origin, potatoes were only introduced into Europe in the 16th C
      papa = papa i.e. father
      pullus = chicken
      * television = modern word, from Greek 'tel-' (far) and Latin 'visionem' (act of seeing)
      frigidus (adj.) = cold
      dormire = to sleep
      pons (pontis in the accusative) = bridge
      lentus (adj.) = slow
      armor = love
      arbor = tree
      * gant / guante = of Germanic, not Latin, origin

They're two amazing and wonderful languages, it's so easy for me to understand both if written, French pronunciation is a bit harsh at the beginning, but once you get how it works it sounds more natural. Spanish definitely sounds more similar to Italian and after 6 months I already understood everything.

      Excuse me but in my opinion, their mother Latin language is the prettier one but Spanish is the most dynamic out of Romance languages even surpassing Italian. Italian may have lots of Latin words but it was also influenced by non-Latin languages like Oscan and Umbrian. Both Vocabulary and Syntax and even pronounciation, well, Spanish got all that category that's why it is the closest to Latin. French is the least due to the pronounciation contrasting to Latin. Even the pronounciation of letter S is missing in French and the letter R in Latin is pronounced alike the Spanish "R" and "R" in French is sort of soft sound. Sardinian the theoretically closest to Latin is very closed to Italian and not even sounds like Spanish. Hearing Spanish is like hearing its lost mother Latin. #RespectMyComment

    Been learning both languages on Duolingo. Spanish comes off easier if one already knows some French. But I'd say, Spanish is closer to Portuguese than French. Although many words feel like an extension/limitations of the other.
    French - etudient , vie, musique
    Spanish - estudiante , vida, música
    Interestingly, some words remain common like apprendre (French) and aprender (Spanish) - to learn

      If your mother tongue is English so I recommend you to learn French first inasmuch as they are so similar to each other like the non-pronunciation of the letter "E" in the end of the word.
      Terre - e does not get pronounced
      Facile
      Pomme
      English:
      Lake
      Cake
      Advantage

      Truly depends on where you live, what is your mother tongue, and which countries you want to visit. If you want to visit North America (Québec or Canada), Europe, or Africa, you should learn French (unless you especially want to go to Spain or Equatorial Guinea). If you are more interested in Central or South America, then it should be Spanish of course (except if you're especially interested in Haïti or the French islands in the Caribbean).
      I'm Québécois so obviously I'd be biaised if I said you absolutely should learn French first :P

      If you already speak English, start with french cuz 50% of English words come from French.
      Otherwise start with Spanish it's easier, all the letters are pronounced and there are less tenses.

    I’m from the US, and I’ve been learning French. Spanish is more useful here, but for some reason, I’m more interested in French. But when I do try to learn Spanish, I inadvertently try to pronounce the words as I would in French. Especially the R’s. I can’t roll my R’s like in Spanish, but I can do that glottal French R decently. Maybe when I learn Spanish I will have some sort of hybrid accent between an American and French accent. 😂

    Allow me to correct your Spanish. The word in Spanish for potato is "papa" and not "patata" in spite that around 75% of Spaniards call it "patata" and only the Andalusians call it papa, which is not a slang, but rather it's original name that had when it came from Peru which is where it is originally from. The word "patata" is a corruption of the world "batata" which is the word by which sweet potato was known in the Caribbean. If someone knows I would like to get an explanation of why the French name of potato is "pomme de terre" which literally means apple from the ground. Apple from the ground????

      Patata is used in most part of Spain and it IS the standard word for “potato” here. You cannot correct someone when that person is saying it correctly (she is a native speaker wtf are you saying with your “allow to correct your Spanish”). It’s arrogant and pretentious. Please, look it up in a dictionary.
      Oh, and “batata” is “boniato”.
      I’m from Spain btw

    • @adolfobriceno1635

      @@Risperanto You seem not to be a native speaker of Spanish and that is perfectly Ok, but if two native Spanish speakers have a doubt about a particular word in Spanish we would check that word in the “Real Academia Espaňola” dictionary. Upon checking the word “patata” we will see that it will refer us to the word “papa” and not the other way around. Both words are in the dictionary, therefore both words are perfectly correct, but I do apologize if my facetiousness had been interpreted as arrogance. I just wanted to emphasize the origin of the word patata which the corruption of the word for sweet potato (batata in Spanish) commonly used in the Caribbean. dle.rae.es/patata?m=form
      I hope that this clarifies the whole misunderstanding. Peace
