A Competition auto vs a non competition manual = dumb comparison
Didn't we say that this is not a fair comparison? I thought we were pretty clear.

manual g80 owner here... That was some great driving by the m2. The auto in these cars make a ridiculous difference of speed. The m2 gets a touch less hp than the m3 manual to manual and this m3 was a comp. Great driving dude, that was much close than i expected.
Great Video. As you mentioned its not about who wins the matchup but more of just the opportunity to put these great cars to a fun test. you guys are putting out the content true bmw enthusiast can enjoy and i appreciate that.
Thank you, appreciate it. It's so easy to criticize online and that's fine. We're not perfect, but we were also very clear why we did this race: for no reason. But no one wants to read :) At the end of the day, it was a fun exercise with no real purpose.

I think it's a driver and transmission thing here. The G87 M2 has been measured on a dyno numerous times by now and seems to output 469 HP or so *at the wheels*. One of the first few measured on a dyno matched a G80 M4 for HP at the wheels as well so...
Definitely the transmission. The auto is optimized for that car with much faster shifts and shorter gears. Not to mention a very good launch control system. I think the auto M2 would've won.

yah. i assumed it was auto vs auto at first then had to rewind and saw it was a manual vs auto. wtf?! yah, no wonder the auto won. stupid comparison, they should have done auto vs auto. bmw fan boys have been waiting for that comparison and they missed the opportunity. imagine it would be photo finish as m2 quoted power is much less than what it really puts out.
Any chance for a manual vs manual or auto vs auto between these cars?

We all know an auto G87 M2 would literally be right next to this M3 Comp RWD the whole time. Only an xDrive M3 comp would pull on an auto G87, I think that's obvious.

It looks dumb to some but in real life situations this drag race will happen more than expected times. It happens every day where you'll find guys with the same or different car brand with different geaboxes like auto vs manual bmw to bmw or to an audi or Merc. So this drag race for me was fair enough.
Fair points. One thing: you can never please everyone. Also people don't realize that we can't just go to a parking garage and pick whatever we want. We make a request and rely on whatever cars BMW has in their press fleet. They were kind enough to bring out the 1M, M2 CS and others.
These would definitely be the ones I would pick over the M4

Lack of time and preparation. That's all.
But actually they have the same engine regardless “competition” badge, with a remap on m2 you can have the same setup as on the m3 competition. Transmission and the weight is what makes difference in performance between these two.

@@bmwblog yah just bustin balls. still a great race. but I suspect the auto version of the m2 is pretty close to the g8x rwd as the actual hp difference isn't as great as advertised.

Waited a year for an allocation. Hopefully she leaves the factory soon. I live in the North Eastern US, so hoping to finish the break in 1200 miles before another long winter of storage.

Totally agree with you. This was race was done just to have some content to post. I've noticed UA-cam watchers fall victim to the fact watching videos due to our interest in the car or cars being run despite the fact in this video the cars weren't matched up correctly and should've been manual vs manual or auto vs auto. Straight up FAIL here on this one!
We can't always get the cars we want. This drag race was an afterthought. We were there to test the M2 vs. M2 CS vs 1M. We had these cars on hand and we did a silly drag race. Which we already said it wasn't fair. Now would you prefer to not see this content at all?

My Golf R with the performance pack and a stage 3 tune taking it to 460bhp would stuff the both of them with it's 4wheel drive especially in the wet!!!

Previous m2c or cs was for a reason, same s55 but then lighter then m3 or m4. And this peace of сrар they call m2 has no sense at all.

We didn't want the auto. This test was about testing the manual in several BMWs. We have a separate test drive soon with jus the M2 auto.
