Full Build: 1978 Jeep DJ5 Goes From Hauling Mail to Hitting the Trails

  • It’s hard to make a DJ5 Mail Jeep cooler than it already is, but Carcass managed to do just that and build an off-road monster that delivers on its mission of conquering any terrain and keeping its character in the process. The guys sought a unique right-hand drive project that could maintain its allure no matter the project’s direction while providing the off-road performance few vehicles can match on the trails. They did this by stripping down the retired mail Jeep and starting from scratch.

So wish I could get ahold of the correct person at PowerNation to pitch my show idea too.
The show/podcast is called “Car Nerds”. Its focus is on the tools and materials that will become a part of the methodical and detailed restomod project vehicle.

Back in the 90's I had an ex-postal service 2wd 1976 DJ5 I had bought from a friend who just wanted to get rid of it for $100 bucks. One night I was out messing around in the mud in a heavy rain storm with my buddy. He had a ex-Park Rangers 4wd Chevy K5 blazer he had bought at action. He was always bragging how it had heavy duty axles, transfercase, transmission etc... being a former Rangers blazer. He got that blazer buried to the frame rails while in 4wd that night. While I was literally doing circles around him in the mud in my 2wd DJ5. I put a beating on that jeep for several years and had loads of fun with it. Many road, fishing and camping trips in that thing. Eventually sold it for $600 bucks and bought a 1961 CJ5 I built up. One of the best vehicles I ever owned. In the years I had it the only things I had to do to it to keep it on the road other than regular maintenance was replace it's fuel pump, starter and a radiator. All of which were very inexpensive to replace. Was a very well made, tough and reliable vehicle.

My mom started her 25yr rural letter carrier back in the mid seventies, during the 80’s she had two of these right hand drive jeeps, one for the route and one for parts. When both motors wore out my dad replaced it with the only motor we had available, a stock 4bll Chevy 350 w/ 350 trans, w/ dual exhaust. It was a wicked little beast. My mom drove “ Special Delivery” on the route for many years until she retired it. 😬👍

I've been working at a body shop for a bit now and extra tips I learned was if you're painting the door, it's better to take off the mirror and belt molding (the trim at the bottom of the window) for a better paint job in the end. The mirror can get in the way, and if you're unlucky, the clear coat could stick in that gap between the door and the belt molding.

This was cool to see. I have an Willy's Cj-2A that was my dad's and remember cruising around the woods and swamps in. My father passed 10 years ago but my mom gave the jeep to me a few years back because she knew I would get it running again and fix it all up. I am excited to tackle the project but I don't think I will have time for at least another couple years plus I want my own land and a heated garage to work in when I'm doing that. I do plan on documenting the whole thing though that was one mistake I made when I also got my dad's old 2006 lbz duramax and started fixing it up and putting modifications and tuning it I never really documented anything until recently as I decided to make some caltrac style traction bars. I took some video of me making them and welding stuff together. It was fun and gives me something to do instead of hibernating in the winter lol. My youngest brother got his 78 camaro z-28 and the middle one got his guitars including an old les Paul custom sunburst so my mom was very fair with those things and wanted us to enjoy them.

Maybe add some on board air to make it easier to air up and down those monster tires, couple fire extinguisher mounts, and fab up some kind of storage drawer for tools and spare parts...maybe mounted above the fuel cell. Might even be able to rig up some kind of carrier for a spare tire. Last suggestion would be upgrade the seats to include a full harness. Just a lap belt could get you hurt in a roll over. It used to be so hard to get to see this show. Because you would only be able to catch it super early on Sunday mornings
On premium channels that the cable company charged so much (10bucks a month) on top of the 150$ you were already paying. Now i just pay for UA-cam Premium and wifi. And now life is great. Wish my Dad was still here to show him that he can watch his car shows on his phone anywhere he wanted.

One of the only things I'd have done differently is add an on board air compressor.
They're great to have for a real offroading vehicle since you'll be airing the tires up and down pretty often if you know what you're doing.
Also, as much as I like an aggressive sounding vehicle, that baby downpipe and barely a muffler combo is going to be brutal considering you'll be riding around with the doors off constantly just assaulting your own ears.

    • @paulm749
      @paulm749 Рік тому

Good suggestions, and speaking of the exhaust system, I would ditch the hose clamps and weld the O2 sensor mounting plate onto the pipe. It would be a bit more work, but you wouldn't have to worry about it leaking or coming loose.

The front differential cover you got from Summer racing doesn’t have the channel around the ringer area, so it will Throw oil forward properly. You need to Gail Banks cover that does have the proper shape to it to have proper oiling.

It would fit in real nice over here as we all drive on the "Wrong side of the road" - lol/ But to be honest when Im abroad in the USA or Spain and its Islands i find driving on your side of the roads no problem, but thats me I guess.. The red white and blue jeep would fit right in over here also but I would have to put a RED St. Georges Cross on the roof.. Thanks for the Videos - Ian -- UK.

This is one of my most disliked Jeep builds. Almost nothing of the original Jeep remains, and in the end, they just did some basic trails that a stock Jeep could've done. Numerous times they said they were doing this build on a budget, then went and built a custom suspension setup with custom fabricated parts on a multi-thousand dollar laser cutting machine. That Jeep body looks ridiculous on that lifted frame. They lengthened the wheel base, which defeats the purpose of Jeep's famously short wheel base. They gave the outside of the body a fresh coat of paint, but the underside still had flakes of rust falling off, and didn't bother painting the axles or transmission/transfer case.
That poor engine is not suited for all that extra weight they've tacked onto it, and will struggle not only on the road, but on significant inclines and muddy terrain. They absolutely lied about the power numbers of that engine, it was no way making near 250HP before converting to fuel injection, and MIGHT have come close to that with the direct injection changes. Even the most skilled man on Earth (Newcomer) with these engines can only get near 400HP after hand-crafting nearly every component and slapping 2 turbos onto one.
By far the most awful decision was that fuel tank. All that wasted space from when they covered up the rear suspension mounts could've been used for the fuel tank, but nope! Let's just slap it in the cabin behind the seats. No problem!
As someone restoring a 85 CJ7, I hated watching this build. This is a show Jeep, and shouldn't be looked at by anyone working on their own for actual use.
