That 174hp from a 305ci TBI to the tires with that many miles is pretty healthy. Nice testament how well and durable the GMT400 platform is when trucks used to be made and assembled in the USA. Only thing that kills these trucks is neglect and rust.
I loved their conversation about these trucks in the 90's. I was in High School from '96-'00 and in '98 my older brother bought an '89 OBS single cab short bed. It was a 5 speed manual with the 4.3 V6 and I have so many fond memories of that truck; even though it wasn't mine (I learned to drive stick in it). Since it was 2WD it already had a bad ass raked stance from the factory, and my Bro Put FAT tires and wheels on it, that truck handled like it was on rails, then he put a massive subwoofer system in it, it was an incredible truck to drive around in the late 90's. He used to let me take it to School to do basic maintenance in the auto shop and everyone loved that truck. I used to drive my friends and girls around in the back of it. He ended up selling it circa 2000, it was a sad day. I wish he still had that truck today.
Beautiful as always, but we and I speak for most of us, wanted to see the actual 1/4 mile times, especially with those 335 tires which never seen before down the track, I was thinking a 11.5 to 11.7 in the 1/4 mile, if u would of put a auto from a vette thr time would of been maybe slightly lower E.T’s But wish u guys would of cover up the back bed to make a cover for it and a bed cover to keep it all nice and neat, traction control would of been a plus to on it, but love it how u made it perform, good job fellas and to the producers a hi five to them also !
I own a '95 short box reg cab. It started life as a z71 with AN ORIGINAL 5 SPEED!! At 344,000 miles, she pushed the passenger side head gasket. Started knocking on the door right when i pulled in our driveway. Today, it has a 2010 2wd front suspension conversion with camburg engineering stage 5 long travel suspension, 3.0 triple bypass shocks, 3.0 coilovers, blitzkrieg hubs and swing set steering, 9 inch out back with a spool and 4.086⁶s triangulated 4 link with 3.5 triple bypass coilovers only. Then, the best part of the truck is the port injected 400 small block i pulled out of a outlaw dirt track car. 800 horsepower with the carburetor. After the injection, e85, on a Holley terminator x she made 690 WHEEL hp and thats through a built turbo 400 and 40 inch tires. I also have Rusty Wallace's boom tube from his ride in 1997. My grandfather was Don Garlitz's engine builder, Wallace is one of my grandfathers best friends Anyway, equal length long tubes going to an 8 into 1 collector i made myself then straight to the boom tube, the noise it makes is nothing short of EVIL! Its no joke in the desert. Its so ungodly fast. The truck only weighs 4100 pounds. Not to brag but the mismatched 25 year old king triple bypass and 8 year old QA1 coilovers honestly work better than most of my buddies brand new stuff. Anyone who owns a pre runner rides in my truck and immediately says their truck aint shit. Im talking brand new Tacoma with long travel, bed is totally cut out with a tonneau cover then i have 2 yakima storage units mounted back there my spare tire is mounted to a subframe system i built (just like every single other aspect of the truck) under the tonneu cover so when i open it, i pull 4 pins and the actuators slowly let my spare down to a reachable spot, spin the wing nut off, throw the wallerd out unit back on there. The tonneu cover did require substantial modifications to support the weight so there are some grade 8 hex heads kinda messing up the cleanliness. But now i can load 2 450s right on top of the tonneu cover in place of the yakima missles. I have a/c, an actual screen from a Tesla model 3 in the dash, 6 speakers with 1, 8 inch subwoofer. The boom tube exits out of the bedside right in front of the passenger rear wheel right where the OEM molding was. The fenders and bedsides are excessively cut for clearance and i have 5 inch bushmaster flares. The intake is inside the cab and i reserved an a/c duct which i ran directly into the airbox i made. I dont know why nobody does that because its absolutely amazing how fast it cools the thing down. I have a satin black wrap with gold method beadlocks. The bedsides are cut at a 45° angle from the wheel arch to 4 inches below the taillights and i bult my own rear bumper from 2×4 4130 square tubing. The front end is cut all the way up to the secondary lights then i made my own bumper/winch mount/skid plate that spluts into 5 different pieces so i can replace whatever i destroy not the entire thing. I also made my own pop up tent that clamps onto the tonneu cover, then extends up 8 feet tall. I bring a small generator with me, and my wife and i play dirt 3 and forza 4 on xbox 360 out in the middle of nowhere on a 52 inch 1080p Samsung flat screen while laying in a memory foam king size bed. I put a tailgate window regulator and motor from a 1984 suburban in the cab which i fit a one piece rear window to, made a secondary firewall i guess you could call it to contain the mechanism and i have the only obs single cab with a power rear window. I made a flap in the back of the pop up tent lined with flexible magnetic strips which attaches to the cab and creates a semi stable seal so we can have insane a/c if it gets too hot. My wife love the truck so much she actually gets depressed when we get home from the bush. Its saved our lives 4 times. Got us out of a really, REALLY bad situation with 9 or 10 dudes that aggressively drove up on us and started screaming to get oug of the truck and get on the ground...all this crazy shit. I racked a round in my pistol but then i thought, if they make a kill shot on me, i dont wanna know what theyll do to her, so i shimmied through the rear window, she followed suit, threw her in 2nd, and proceeded to throttle the shit outta these creeps with 70 mph baseball sized rocks then just took them on the express lane to gaplebees. I know those dudes would have killed me and raped then killed my wife. It was 3 in the morning, the wife and i are literally in the middle of making a baby, then these dudes showed up. I ain't scared of a damn thjng ESPECIALLY another man but 9 or 10 of them at 3am with guns and im in the act of taking the wife on a tour of climax canyon. Offputting to say the least.
I’m 18 now, and I’ve been watching powernations videos since I was about 12. The reason I got into cars. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a new edge build and I think it would be awesome to see an 04’ Mach 1 build. It has the 4.6 4v so it would be easy to throw power on
Usually those conversion companies were really proud of their work so they put badges everywhere. If not maybe in the glove box should be a build sticker. The dealership I worked at ran quite a few conversions through the lot both new and used. They were pretty sweet back then. They even had models with basically van seats in them and they were Hella comfy!
Thank you!! It seems every single truck that Powernation does has a cowl induction hood . So glad you didn't put one on this truck . Not all of us like them .
I think if you would throw an auto weld lense in front of the camera on weld scenes, it would make those shots way cooler. Love the channel and the build!! Great info on rear suspension!!
Omg. Sell this suspension on global scale. This thing would fly out of warehouses in no time. Besides that, holy truck, this thing is beautiful beast. Insane work, and absolute joy to watch
My first truck was an '84 Dodge D100, and I've always wanted to get another one and build something race-oriented, but never had any thoughts on how to do the rear end aside from maybe a triangulated 4-link. I know what I want to do now. That has to be the coolest solid axle suspension I've ever seen.
we called the 88-98 an "OBS" as soon as the '99s came out, and of course RCSB was dubbed as well. Not new terminology, just go check out forums from years ago. :) Awesome build guys
I used to have a blue 93 Chevy sbsc I sold it when I was younger and I just now recently picked up a 98 gmc ext cab with 170,000 miles on it 5.7 vortec! I would like to turn into a sleeper eventually!!👍🏻👍🏻
Bought exact truck new in 1992. But 350 5 speed. Lowered it. Put in a L31 MPFI Vortec in it. Was a fun truck with the 5 speed. Sold it in 2012. Miss that truck.
Super build! Great looking truck. Big negatives: no front runner fender wells gonna make a huge mess. The hole in the bed: no bueno. Other than those, it is sweet.
Thank God no silly airbag suspension. You guys nailed it with the 3-link suspension, brakes, a clutch, and LS7-type horsepower. More details on the torque absorber would have been helpful.
the driver side front end collision area is an Aluminum can. my best friends father fell asleep at the wheel and went left of center and just so happen to collide into my brother and his girlfriend. such a small world but long story short, It was an 96' 1500 vs an 03 ford escape. same point of impact, both going 60 mph. my brother and girlfriend where able to walk out of their car. my buddies dad had to get the jaws of life and the wheel well from his chevy out of his leg. There is a reason why these truck are not asking alot of money quite yet. yes they are reliable, bullet proof, easy to work on, and have alot of aftermarket but be careful of getting into a head on collision. Especially since these guys are showing people how they made power on this platform, id wish they would show them how to do it safely as well.
I have a Olympic white 97 k1500 z71 silverado regular cab short bed. I get compliments on it when I take her out and some people make me offers. Best offer I got on the spot was 5k cash, if he doubled it I might have considered it but for now I still need a reliable truck to get me around
You got yourself a conversion truck. I remember doing dealer prep on base model trucks that were sent to a conversion van company for crushed velvet seats, 80's era gaudy stripes (painted on, though) sunroofs, etc. The trim was real wood, but it was builders grade lumber with minwax varnish. They were hideous and the quality was awful, but they sold well.
Hands down best video. I'm about to ls swap my 93 once I get the cam swap done then in the truck it goes. Think ima buy that amazon harness though seems so much easier. Thank you
For Calvin’s car I’d rock the Varis kit, they have it in need for speed heat if you want to look at it. I have one fully kitted with a wrap on it. And in the game there’s a turbo flat 6 that I motor swapped into it. The meeting in the middle should be the body kit and Calvin does whatever he wants under the hood, just make sure it’s a ripper
I'm amazed how easy it looks to swap the engine. I'm building a 69 mustang and it was a PITA to remove the old engine and install the new upgrade. The radiator support not coming off is probably the reason
I just finished my build it's a 92step gmc with 408 stroker SBC the truck sits on 35s one of my favorite builds to date there's just a certain spot for obs short bed single cabs
Love how the say oo a ls will be epic in this but not every one has 25k to do a solid ls build with all the things needed to go with it to make it work one the obs
Dang sounds like you have the same luck with Fords as my family and myself. We’ve had a 1997 Aerostar that broke down somewhere around 15 times before it hit 15,000 miles. Random electronics going haywire and completely destroying themselves while we’d driven to Washington (state) from The Victorville California area. Which is about a 30-40 minute drive to Riverside California. A 75 to 90 minute drive to Los Angeles. We had the transmission just blow out it’s seals randomly and puke it all out on the road all at once on 4 separate occasions. 2 times in the original trans and 2 times on the replacement trans under warranty. The ECU and PCM both had to be replace a few times each under warranty. Also this Van was 100% stock and was basically a Ford Ranger of the same year mechanically. It had the same 4.0 “Cologne” V6 and the 5R55E auto trans. I seriously wanted to lift that van so bad and turn it into a do it all off-roader. Since all the seats were removable with locking levers besides the front two captains chairs. But that dream started to die very quickly after the first year an a half of trouble that just continued to destroy my parents faith in the Van. The dealership then started to try and deny warranties after about the 8th or 9th time we had to come in before it hit 15,000 miles. They said we must have been doing something wrong. But we never touched the van. All the service was done at that same dealership. So if anything was messed up it was with their mechanics. But I doubt that was it. I think it was just a poorly made example. Or maybe many of it’s parts could have been damaged by some wiring mishap at the factory or poor grounds, or something. We eventually came to an agreement to buy it back because of the fact they were the only ones doing any work in the Van and my mom and dad drove pretty conservative as far as not flooring it all over the place. I mean it was a van and they knew it was meant to take care of the family so they treated it like a King/Queen. They wanted it to last long enough to give to one of us. We then attempted again after having bought a 1999 or 2000 Camry not sure exactly anymore became my nephew has it now and it’s still going with 460,000 miles on it. Anyway they wanted another new car but Toyotas financing was a bit too pricy for their credit level at the time so they went back to Ford. They got a 2004 Expedition and that was the 5.4 V8 I believe. And that thing was doing many of the same unexplained things. Random electronic failures. But this one was strange because that truck never went on long haul road trips. It was mainly a 45 min to 75 min commute from Victorville CA to Ontario CA 6 days a week. Only about 100 miles round trip each day. No trailers hauled and again he took it to a reputable shop that we took the Toyota Camry to for all Oil Changes, Trans fluid Changes, brakes etc. my parents were just far too busy to have my dad do the work himself even though he knew how to. The Expedition made it to round about 45,000 miles though before it completely stopped starting and had the dealership stumped for nearly a month. Also they got this Ford from a different dealership than the Van for fear that it might have been known that the Van may have problems and they sold it anyway. So I doubt it was incompetence at two different dealerships. So the fact they said all the electronics were testing good system wide and somehow it still wouldn’t start. Just made me think the car had another wiring gremlin. Possibly bad grounds throughout the system, fault relays, open circuits somewhere, or bare wires touching metal somehow? But it was completely factory and was treated like royalty. My parents value long lasting purchases. So they want to get every last dollar of value that they can from their investments. Anyway they finally ended up doing a trade in for a 05 or 06 Mustang since all of us kids had moved out by this point and my parents were always just going places with only the two of them. And somehow the Mustang even had problems. Faulty suspensions bushings throughout the entire front and back suspension, faulty made motor mounts too that caused the engine to be able to hit some part of the frame or some other component long enough and with enough force to eventually wear a hole in the oil pan and block. Car was a total write off from insurance with 7,950 miles on it. My parents have not had a Fire since. And they very much like them, and would totally get a new one if they needed a new car. But they’re older now, well my Pops passed away a while back. And my mom now has the same older Camry, she loans out to the family when they need a spare car. She also has a 2021 Rav4 Hybrid that she absolutely loves because she can go so long between fill ups. She wanted the prime when she found out about it but they’re so hard to get without an insane markup or just plain not available due to demand and lower production numbers than the other hybrid model and other regula ICE ONLY model Rav4. I’ve already typed a book here so I’m not going to get into my ford experiences. They were different but similar in some ways. But I only needed 1 lemon to go to Toyotas and Hondas. Haven’t had any issues with either of my Toyotas (Camry/Corolla) in 16 years for the Corolla, and 18 years for the Camry. Then I also have a 2005 Acura TSX Also known as the Honda Accord Euro R or maybe it’s just the regular euro accord. But it’s still a great car, and since it stick shift (manual/standard) I don’t have to worry about the one weak-ish point on those generation TSX’s, Accords and Civics that were automatics. They had a great deal of them with faulty transmissions for the autos that would just start to slip and ship all strange, like a dragging clutch. Then a really jerky shift at times too. I know because my friend wanted the same car but got the auto and regretted not learning stick because it had two transmission go out on it. He eventually learned stick and now has a Manual Acura TL Type S. It’s close to the same year, somewhere around 2005-2008.
At the shop i work at, we currently have a shorty obs 2500 stepside that’s black, has red accents, some wheels, i think it’s on air suspension, but it looks sick. Has a 350 in it. Currently in for AC issues
I love these builds man they are nice as hell. A normal person as myself cont afford an ls crate engine that is anywhere from 8-25 grand. It is nice to see the builds but can u guys build something that's affordable for the low income person?
Had you guys sprayed the gold over gray primer first, you’d have used exponentially less material, then the black cherry would have covered the gold in a single coat so when you cleared it the tape edge would be almost nonexistent, ideal when you can’t cut and buff because of flat clear…..
I got a 5.9 96 1500 dodge ram short bed single cab and I can’t wait till I have enough money to do all the necessary upgrades it still beasty for being stock
At the 1 hour 35 minute mark on the final Dyno pull it looks like there is massive arching across the entire engine bay. You see it from plug wire to plug wire and then ultimately discharge against the alternator. It would be interesting to see if you gain any HP after getting that sorted out.
Its actually something falling into the back of the alternator and then flying out of the engine bay. Whatever it is can be seen landing on the intake also, might be something in the hood liner.
I have a 97 Sierra 5.7 vortec with a cowl induction hood. Every now and then while driving I see arcing through the vent on my hood coming from the engine bay. I have yet to determine where it's coming from exactly. Any tips on how to diagnose it and determine the source? Thx in advance
My neighbor got one brand new and they forgot the oil control rings on one of the pots. Used oil like mad and the dealer just kept saying 4 qts. a month was normal. He flies a Yota flag now big time.
Love the old reliable tbi 305 and 700r4 combo. 96-98 motors didnt do it for me. Not fast but simple and solid , I have same truck with only long tubes and a 2500 stall converter 350ci pulls 15.7 in the quarter mile consistently
Huge, noticed it too. Tbh it looked terrible on the course, seemed to have massive understeer and looked difficult to really put the power down outta the corners. Something def off imo
Awesome build, I wish you guys would've went more in depth on how the rear suspension geometry was determined. I see calculators online, but they're all biased towards 4x4 guys.

Never seen the third link done like that this is awesome learn something every day
Nice job on the rear suspension Jimmy! That truck is gonna carve!
Nice components. Not my choice for paint color, fit or finish but a fun to watch build.
I’ve got an 89 obs Scottsdale that I’m fixing up, they’re awesome trucks
You guys are so good at what you do. I so love watching you fabricate and handle so many different jobs with apparent ease. :)
we called the 88-98 an "OBS" as soon as the '99s came out, and of course RCSB was dubbed as well. Not new terminology, just go check out forums from years ago. :) Awesome build guys
10 million views and only 223k “likes” come on guys! This man deserves it! Show him the love!
This is your sign to go get another one. 😁
I think he nailed why I like them so much. They’re the last true hot rod for my generation. Boxy with big engines and easy to modify.
Super build! Great looking truck. Big negatives: no front runner fender wells gonna make a huge mess. The hole in the bed: no bueno. Other than those, it is sweet.
this might be the best build series I have seen yet on this channel. that truck turned out just right
Thank God no silly airbag suspension. You guys nailed it with the 3-link suspension, brakes, a clutch, and LS7-type horsepower. More details on the torque absorber would have been helpful.
I'm trying to figure out what the upper center link contraption is? Looks funny.
You are throwing down some very sweet welds! Great work! Love the old Chevy!
The trucks are great and fun to drive. My 98 GMC is a neck turner.
STILL DRIVING MY 1999 GMC SIERRA SWB ...COLD A/C !!!!!!!!! BIRMINGHAM , ALABAMA👍👍👍💯💯💯💯💯 KILLER JOB GUYS 👍👍💯💯💯💯💯💯
the driver side front end collision area is an Aluminum can. my best friends father fell asleep at the wheel and went left of center and just so happen to collide into my brother and his girlfriend. such a small world but long story short, It was an 96' 1500 vs an 03 ford escape. same point of impact, both going 60 mph. my brother and girlfriend where able to walk out of their car. my buddies dad had to get the jaws of life and the wheel well from his chevy out of his leg.
As always Dave if I could jump threw this tv and give you a hug I would super happy can’t wait we are so close
Always glad to see pat and Frankie
Love it. Great build. Thanks for letting us watch the complete episodes
Great build. Love it. Carcass is my favorite Powernation show!!
28:30 wire, meet transmission brace, we'll be best friends! *slaps parts together*
Got that Fall Guy color scheme going on. Beautiful combo.
Dayum they both work together for this car and didn't even make a mistake
Thanks for uoading these. Makes for a good evening watch when I'm widning down.
I got a Silverado OBS. She told me to sell it. I told her I love you.
I bought my C1500 in April of 1988 and still drive it on sunny days. It's a short wide with a few modest upgrades.
i love jimmy welding with no gloves like a real man lol
I'm amazed how easy it looks to swap the engine. I'm building a 69 mustang and it was a PITA to remove the old engine and install the new upgrade. The radiator support not coming off is probably the reason
I just finished my build it's a 92step gmc with 408 stroker SBC the truck sits on 35s one of my favorite builds to date there's just a certain spot for obs short bed single cabs
That Black and Chrome looks good.
Nice stance, up power it, upgrade brakes, do not notch the frame but upgrade suspension.
I don't care for your hair but your abilities are awsome.
Knocked it out of the park. Great build.
Very nice job on the truck guys! Enjoyed the show.
I stopped clenching my jaw after three hours watching. Thanks for working for me a while
This truck and the fox body mustang were my favorite vehicles from that era ...
One of the best looking trucks I've seen, love the paint scheme
Satin clear was a bad call
Love how the say oo a ls will be epic in this but not every one has 25k to do a solid ls build with all the things needed to go with it to make it work one the obs
It’s amazing how much these guys know!!!
Good full build guys and you both do a excellent job
Aye somebody give this man a raise
My grandma had one of these me and my brother wanted it so bad 😔 she gave it to her favorite son now it's in pieces in his backyard rusting
At the shop i work at, we currently have a shorty obs 2500 stepside that’s black, has red accents, some wheels, i think it’s on air suspension, but it looks sick. Has a 350 in it. Currently in for AC issues
You can put a vise grip on that engine hoist stick to easily control the touchy valve
Who else here says leave the molding, I like the molding. I have 2obs ,✌🏾
I love these builds man they are nice as hell. A normal person as myself cont afford an ls crate engine that is anywhere from 8-25 grand. It is nice to see the builds but can u guys build something that's affordable for the low income person?
The world needs a hellcat swapped 2nd gen ram sst
We don’t care about Dodge.
Had you guys sprayed the gold over gray primer first, you’d have used exponentially less material, then the black cherry would have covered the gold in a single coat so when you cleared it the tape edge would be almost nonexistent, ideal when you can’t cut and buff because of flat clear…..
Love my 1993 wt siera long bed 5.3 swap coming up
I got a 5.9 96 1500 dodge ram short bed single cab and I can’t wait till I have enough money to do all the necessary upgrades it still beasty for being stock
A chevy 305 putting 170hp to the wheels is very good considering the mileage.
Very nice!! A rear anti roll bar would help the body roll alot!!
Would love to see you guys do a long box version of this video
28:00 why didn't one guy hold the transmission to the stand while the other guy jacked it up? Heave it in place and then bring the jack in afterwards?
I’m currently rebuilding my 383 stroker on my 91 regular cab short bed.
Love the way the bed looks when u sat it on the chassis ....And with them wheels it's lookin' pretty cool 🙂
Love obs
At the 1 hour 35 minute mark on the final Dyno pull it looks like there is massive arching across the entire engine bay. You see it from plug wire to plug wire and then ultimately discharge against the alternator. It would be interesting to see if you gain any HP after getting that sorted out.
Its actually something falling into the back of the alternator and then flying out of the engine bay. Whatever it is can be seen landing on the intake also, might be something in the hood liner.
I watched it again on my TV you can see it arc across all 4 coil packs and then jump to the alternator.
I have a 97 Sierra 5.7 vortec with a cowl induction hood. Every now and then while driving I see arcing through the vent on my hood coming from the engine bay. I have yet to determine where it's coming from exactly. Any tips on how to diagnose it and determine the source? Thx in advance
I had one of those trucks that ran on 7 cylinders for years. It would spray oil out the exhaust. Those old 350s were hard to kill
Not fast but simple and solid , I have same truck with only long tubes and a 2500 stall converter 350ci pulls 15.7 in the quarter mile consistently
dang! that truck build is pretty bad ass. Cool video.
powernation guys talk more than they work and cut out all the details to every single build
Before ratcheting wrenches, they rode horses!!
Man those look like zinc bolts that you put in those motor mounts!!!
Would probably be the gold color if they were zinc plated
Love this truck and the whole build.
But is it just me or was there a ton of body roll?
Huge, noticed it too. Tbh it looked terrible on the course, seemed to have massive understeer and looked difficult to really put the power down outta the corners. Something def off imo
@@danharris3319 agreed. No don’t cause it’s a fresh build it just there’s some tweaking and tuning.
That engine is awesome
My favorite truck of all times ❤
GOD BLESS YOU GENTLEMEN GREAT JOB VERY INSPIRATIONAL 🙏🏽👏🏾
When they did the second dyno, it pained me watching him close the door with the window.
Awesome build, I wish you guys would've went more in depth on how the rear suspension geometry was determined.
I see calculators online, but they're all biased towards 4x4 guys.
