Back in the day, Pops Oasis was home to "Bonnie and Clyde Death Car" that you wanted to see a couple of weeks ago. I used to stop there to have a cold one on my way back from furniture deliveries out around Sandy Valley and Pahrump back in 1974 or so. Worked for American Furniture (long gone) on Charleston Blvd. The owners (Cliff and Rosemary Truesdale) owned a place next door to Wayne Newton's Casa De Shenandoah in Paradise Valley. In the summer they went north to Rapid City to escape the heat and we hung out with their daughter around the pool. Every once in a while, Newton would come up to the wall and invite his neighbors (us) to a party at his place. Most of the headliners in Vegas showed up when they were in town. It was pretty cool for a 25-year-old truck driver to rub elbows with people like Wayne Newton and Robert Goulet! In fact, I ran into Goulet in the bar outside the showroom at old Sands. I mentioned that my ex-mother-in-law was a huge fan, and it was her birthday. It was about 1 am, but he picked up the bar phone and called her. He spent about 5 minutes trying to convince her he really was Robert Goulet, but she hung up on him, so he had the photographer take a picture of the two of us and signed it, "It really was me! Bob Goulet! Unreal!!!
Wha wha what!!!
I remember paying whatever t was, 25 or 50 cents, to see the car back in the 70's
Great story Gary. Thanks!
I'm Canadian and love the American southwest. I've stayed at the Gold Strike a couple of times! Some may consider it a dump but I found the rooms to be clean, it had a Denny's on site and it was a perfect place to crash after a lot of driving. Last time I was there was about 5 years ago and after fighting my way out of LA freeway jungle and about 6 hours on the road, I was so glad I didn't have to fight Vegas traffic and the Gold Strike was like an oasis! I hope they don't tear it down! Have some fond memories of Jean and the Gold Strike!
It's good to know places like this still exists!!!!
It was a great place to park for sure...
As a former truck driver, i use to like to lay over at the Nevada Landing. The truck parking was close to the entrances of the casino. I loved to eat at the counter in the coffee shop and one night i tried their minestrone soup and it brought treats to my eyes, It reminded me of my mom’s. I call back a few day later and asked to speak to the chief and told him about their memorial soup. I asked if there were any particular day of the week they made minestrone soup. I wanted to take some back home to my brother and sister. He said the soup changes daily depending on what they had left over. Only had that fantastic soup once, but I’ll always remember it
Back in the 90s, that whole place, Whiskey Pete's, Buffalo Bills, Primadonna, Gold Strike and Nevada Landing was the bomb! They offered a ton of free stuff, had an awesome roller coaster, fantastic prime rib and cheap rooms. The good ol days of Jean and Prim.
Hahaha, your music in the Chevron Station is hilarious! U Fun E.
You're the best Sarah! As people are always saying, you can make anything interesting and I love it! Your videos are one of my favorite ways to unwind.. somehow you remind me to be happy, enjoy life, find beauty in almost anything, and how important family and friends are.. Thank you for all the hard work you put into these videos that honestly make such a difference in people's lives, more than you probably know😉
As a trucker I always found easy truck parking at the Casino. Wish the Casino would open again! Just a very peaceful place to spend the night, play some Blackjack and leave in the morning.
Yep take my 10 off grab a couple of tall boys.i remember the buffet in there.and just like whiskey pete trucker discount 27.00 for a room.
A lady out on the west side of jean said they probably wont reopen and tear down the casino. Just sad.
Sure enjoy all your travels and the sights you show. You make our retirement much more enjoyable since with our health we can't travel anymore.
Ah. Leave it to Wonder Hussey, to find the Best out of the way places, and give the best of narrations of them ❤️
Run Wonder Hussy Run . No Trespassing !!!!!!
Wonderhussy👍😘👍!….the best of the west!
In the mid 70's I used to cover the off road races at Pops Oasis. Modified 4 x 4's.
Love your channel. It is "fun" and your always happy to show us around places we will never be able to go to. Thank You, for what you do.
Yes Pops oasis was the original site where you could view the Bonnie and Clyde car there used to be a motorcycle track just east of Pops oasis that I actually used to race at back in the day
Great seeing those historic markers and hearing about the past. Keep up the good work!
You make such great videos. I look forward to each post that you do. Great commentary!
Thanks for your efforts.
You are just so entertaining, the ultimate tour guide. Love your videos!
What a great tour of Jean, NV!
You should be a Nevada official tour guide, paid and everything.
I love how you can find a story anywhere 👍❤️🇨🇦
I agree. She knows how to make even the most boring place sound great.
Covering "The Mint 400" was Hunter Thompsons (and Dr Gonzos) assignment in FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS.
Bigger than the Oakland Roller Derby
Love how BOULEVARD is typoed' twice in a row, consequently!
OMG, my lead co-worker, was the building manager for Nevada Landing, the last one, for 10 years. When it closed, he packed up family and church, and returned to his home in NE Wyoming. The man could do anything building or electrical. The man credited his skills to the pitiful condition of Nevada Landing and having to keep it operating.
That's too cool Rob. If he's online, you should send him this video. Sounds like he'd get a kick out of it!
@@bearpawz_ I would love to but Dave had a bad bike crash four years ago and no longer with us. Always pushing the edge. He would have loved to seen WH's take on Las Vegas, especially when a wide-eyed country kid arrived deep in working side of Vegas in the 1980's.
@@sagehiker 😔 xoxo
Ahhh, that dry lake bed brings back memories. Such a fun spot to shoot some awesome images. :-)
Such a swell outing, thanks you! Never knew Jean existed, so neat.
7:54 that’s crazy that the word boulevard was misspelled the same way twice
22:45 I love how the kid starts climbing the rock in the background after you mentioned liability insurance
It is a Bouvelard.
What a fantastic place i could spend a week looking at everything in the truck stop 🤣🤣🤣
Pop's Oasis was the first place IN NEVADA the Bonnie and Clyde Death Car was on display. I used to stop there in the late 70's early 80's while exploring the desert between Goodsprings and Sandy Valley.
"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts." Mark Twain. Thanks SJ/WH, your videos help me fight my prejudice, bigotry, and norrow-mindedness. Vicarious traveler.
I've always said 'Travel is the Best Educator' ....so yeah I agree...totally!!!
I stayed at the Nevada Landing a few times: it was a pretty neat place.
Decades ago, San Jose CA, we had several Terrible Herbst gas stations in the area. Usually lowest priced.
Many became now Rotten Robbies.
My son and I were out there in 2019 just a few weeks before Covid hit for the Mint 400 and went through that old casino and they had a pretty big display of old desert race cars, trucks, and motorcycles in there! It was pretty cool! The Terribles have been part of a few off road videos as well. One of them they had a 750 motorcycle engine powering a blender with a slick form a go-kart on it.
They still do drag racing out there on Las Vegas Blvd.! It is on TV on the Discovery Channel, under the Street Outlaws series! Very popular shows all across America! Jean is where the new international airport was supposed to be built and they were putting in a super-fast train from Jean to LV! What ever happened to that?
Fascinating area in the middle of NV. Thanks for sharing
A BIG LOL on the piss jug!!
Mike
It's been a couple years since I stumbled upon your videos and I didn't get you. A style all your own that has me addicted now. You have captured many hearts. 👍👍👍🙋♂️
The largest Chevron station was a real kick.
I remember passing through there in the mid 1990s when I drove tour Busses.
I'll be there in beautiful Jean NV in a couple of weeks for the SNORE 250 off road race. And I remember Pop's Oasis
so when you start playing fallout new vegas jean is the first place you come too, the sky diving shack theres a prison and highway partol and some railroad buildings scattered about i always thought it was some guy named jean but now i know! because of this little tour of the area your doing i have been replaying the game and its so much more entertaining cause your explaining all the places.
That's funny on the Arrowhead Highway historical marker they made twice a spelling mistake... they spelled "Bouvelard" instead of Boulevard LOL that was interesting as always, thank you WH
There used to be a glider port in Jean, NV. Flew out of there often.
Yet another in a long line of fine history lessons by the wonder. Thanks wonder. Best teacher I have ever known.
Ha - the sign said Las Vegas "Bouvelard" (at 9:05). They needed a proof-reader... Love your videos
Thx for this vid. I live in Sandy Valley and worked in both Jean recent casinos. I love your channel. my wife and I used to explore many of the same places u do. I love it when u sing.
Jean... Is Wild.
I had a few beers at Pops Oasis way back in the day (the 80's). The last time I was in Jean was in 2012. The Gold Strike was there. I drove out "The Strip" from Charleston Blvd to Jean . Now I live in Florida.
Gold Strike and the Landing catered to charter busses out of LA. Pops Oasis was a family owned Smokey casino back in the day. I flew my glider out of Jean Airport in the 80's and 90's. There use to be a post office and a few residents. Now I think there is just the prison and plastic bucket factory.
Flew hang gliders off the ridge north of the dry lake and hot air balloons over the dry lake.
Times have changed...
My grandfather was an over the road truck driver. In the 70's and 80's he owned a trailer in Jean. We used to drink at the bar in Pop's Oasis when I visited. His neighbor named Bo talked Randy Weaver into surrendering at Ruby Ridge Idaho. Interesting to see that town again. Thank you.
It was fun revisiting Jean, NV again! Sadden to see the Nevada Landing, and Gold Strike, gone! You did a great job as a guide on this vlog. Looking forward to your next vlog on the wonders of the Southern Nevada/Mojave California area. Stay safe and awesome, young lady! 🤙🧧
The Nevada Landing was so cool. We enjoyed staying there.
Pop’s Oasis was located on the east side of interstate 15. It was a small casino that had a 3/4 size craps table. The casino/hotel Gold Strike used to have a small champagne brunch venue that was very nice. And there used to be a free shuttle between the Nevada Landing and the Gold Strike. Both these casinos had single-deck 21 that paid 3:2 on a blackjack.
Loved that 1960 Ford Sunliner on display. I once owned a Starliner, same year. 2 door Hardtop. Great Drive-In machine. I am amazed that there is no visible graffiti on those stacks of fancy rocks.
One of your finest, Sarah Jane. Enjoyed it thoroughly.
I never stop there but now I have to that Chevron looks amazing
All that weird stuff is what I love about those parts of the country. I think it attracts those "free" spirited people who think outside the box. Another cool video.
...thanks for allowing us to tag along...
Fun video. Didn’t know Jean had so much going on. Thanks for letting us know.
There used to be two casinos in Jean. The one going towards LV (Terrible's now) used to advertise a $6.99 (or less?) rib eye steak meal!
And yes, I have taken "Las Vegas Blvd" from LV to Jean many times! I love it! I have the entire road to myself!
as someone that has lived in vegas since 1975, done a lot over 4 wheeling, lots of exploring, lots of hunting, shooting and just exploring places, You show a whole nother side, of gettin out there. Thank You
Another great video. I met a group of Clampers in West Cliff Colorado. Recorded an interesting interview with them. They were members of the Alferd Packer chapter.: the eastern most chapter of ECV.
The smallest "town" I've visited was Amboy CA--population 1, sometimes 3. The 2nd smallest is Rachel NV for me w a population of 55. Thurmond WV has a population of 5.
Somehow the minimalist beauty of the desert is even better with a minimally clothed Wonderhussy in it.
The Las Vegas airport authority recently announced that they are again talking about developing the Jean airport into a second major airport for Las Vegas.
The Wonderhussy Reality Tour!
The rocks art installation reminds me if Storm King Art Center in the Hudson Valley of New York state.
Outrageous & wildly interesting.
I was one of the "kids" that went to Pop's to race in the early 70"s . Twenty two at the time. I was in the Air Force stationed at Nellis.
It's one of those Nevada things. Move the traffic pattern and they will come. Or leave. Love how you go back and review the past business's I do remember pops guess that's dating me! Keep up the travels Sarah!👍
Gold Strike has memories for me...sad to see it idle...terrific tour of Jean..
How about Good Springs where Clarke Gable hung out ?
When I used to go to CES, I stayed at the goldstrike hotel and drove into the MGM to park and took the monorail to the convention center. This saved me a bundle of money.
This woman should have her TV show. Damn, I heard Nevada was empty, but that is ridiculous.
A Wonderhussy Reality TV adventure show ! 😎 so much better than airhead bunny Kendra...
You got that right. This woman has talent, and says it the way it is.
I'm sure that I am Not the first one to get a Kick out of you going into a Chevron Station, wearing a Mobil Cap. I found that funny. But that's my sense of humor. I love traveling with you, even if I am permanently stuck here in St. Louis, Mo.
The Good Roads movement was in the early days of the Automobile from around 1910 -1920s. Because roads before that were nothing but wagon trails and a Stage coach road at best.
Okay. Don't judge me but I had the same ornate, flocked, red and white wallpaper in my bedroom in the 70's. Just the same as Terrible's! But no gambling there! 🤣
I liked the old Gold Strike. It had ballroom dancing nights and 4.99 prime rib with included green salad. The jacuzzi tub was great. I was also in the old NV landing, too. Hated to see that place go. What was nice staying there is that each room was a suite. Between Sun and Thurs, you could get rooms for around 19 bucks. A cheap staycation with a pool.
I met Peter Simon, the son of "Pop" Simon a few years ago. He was the owner of Death Valley Junction for a while in the 1970s and recently has supported that struggling enterprise. I heard that he owns Jean, but I can't verify that.
I used to drive an eighteen wheeler through that area on my way to Vegas and I routinly stopped in at Nevada Landing. It was great they had a really good restaurant there where alot of truckers would stop for breakfast or dinner and it was allways so good. I was really sad to see that place go. It looked just like a riverboat, it really stood out and was kinda sureal looking. I allways looked forward to stopping in there.
Who needs Paris, London, New York, when you got, Jean? Yes, population none. These sacred grounds once touched by Sara, AKA the wonder hussy. deserve a marker. All hail SARA!! THANK YOU STAY SAFE
The Herbst family, the owners of Terribles are huge into offroad racing. They actually have their own shop shop, Herbst-Smith Fab
Wow! Great tons of information saw a lot . enjoyed it. Thank you
Go to Jarbidge, NV. Your kind of place. "Jarbidge" morphed from the Shoshone word for Evil Spirits because it was believed that giants roamed there and ate braves. Be careful on the alleged "road" if you do. It will be a great story. If you don't go between June and September, you better go by dog sled. If you come from the north, recommended route, Rogerson UT and you see a sign "Pavement Ends" stand on the brakes or there may be a looooong drop to the Jarbidge River. Death Valley and the rest of NV are woosie compared to Jarbidge.
That “piss jug” is called a trucker bomb!!! 😂
THANK YOU FOR SHARING.
I hauled produce to Nellis AFB in the early '80's and would stay at Pop's Oasis. If you had a DOT card the rooms were $5 a night. You had to bring your own much needed bug spray though.
I’m going to stop in Jean my next trip to Vegas, just to check out the Chevron station.
iykyk this editing is amazing! Great job.
That art is awesome! 😎
This was very interesting I love it when you find these places to go to close down casinos and all the very interesting stories behind it all keep them coming enjoy every one of them
Thank you from Jack the old retired guy👍👨🏻🦳👍
Wow! So much has changed since I regularly drove I-15 to San Diego and back to Salt Lake City two or three times a year. I remember Pops Casino as we drove by Jean. Back then in the 70's, 80's and early 90's there wasn't much between Primm and Las Vegas. I can remember getting gas in Las Vegas and it was never near the freeway or the strip. And it was, you guessed it Terrible Herbst! Much, much cheaper than anywhere previously mentioned. There are a number of Terrible Herbie's out in the Mojave, like Palmdale, CA, and a few others.
This video made me chuckle, since it brought back many memories for me. Thanks WH!
2 Terrible Herbst in Parker Az
Super Great Video! Thanks!
US 91 also goes into Idaho. It passes right through my hometown.
Oh baby. I love your "zero" hand gesture! [BOIIIING]
Pop's Oasis was very popular with the California charter bus drivers who drove people on gambling junkets. They would come into Nevada, stop at Pop's and drop the passengers off at the casino. Telling them, "I need to get fuel and permits. It's going to take about an hour." Which wasn't exactly a lie. Fuel and permits were required. But, The driver would register his bus, company and passengers with the casino. Then get the fuel and permits. Which only took about 20 minutes. The deal was that any bus driver who brought their passengers to pop's and stayed at least an hour would get fifty bucks and a meal. The drivers would get their fifty bucks, scarf down the meal, round up all his passengers then head off to Las Vegas.
Many casinos in Las Vegas had the same policy... 50 bucks for the driver, stay at least an hour and some food. Some casinos even provided food for the passengers - a couple of pieces of fried chicken and a roll or two.
If a driver had a busload of people who were willing to be shuttled around Las Vegas every hour or two, the driver could make some serious coin. This was back in the 70's and 80's. So a couple of hundred bucks back then would amount to five hundred or so today. Not counting regular pay and tips.
Sometimes the charter would be sponsored by a casino. Meaning, the only place a driver could take his passengers was directly and exclusively to that casino. Any driver, and there were a few, who got caught diverting the group from the intended destination was chastised severely by other drivers, their company and banned by the casino. I heard of one company, not just the driver(s), being banned from bringing groups to Las Vegas as a whole, exclusive or not, because of the abuse. It was serious industry business.
Thanks for the story on Pop's.
Speaking of "Tokens." I have a Harvey's Lake Tahoe Harvey's 50th Anniversary 999 silver/24K gold "Forty Dollar Redeemable Cash Value" commemorative "token" I won in 1994 during their celebration. And also a "Ten Dollar Redeemable Cash Value" 999/24k. I used to have a dozen of them. But I gave all but two away as gifts.
I think that cop was watching you. Did he make contact?
200 grand to stack boulders on BLM in the desert? F***ing Feds! They are out of control! It wont be long before they call it a National Park, charge admission, have full time employees and fine the crap out of people for violating rules. Back in my day the BLM worked for the people. They would go the extra mile to make happen what you wanted to do. The feds have unilaterally made themselves separate from the people. The first step of tyranny.
Another stellar two fer Wednesday installment. I feel good. But, now I just got to know. What the heck is a Wednes?
You have some great adventures!
Wow girl, you are really getting around lately!
What a doll…. Wished ya coulda found where cousin Eddie’s place was from Vegas Vacation. Love the content.
Thanks for another good video on the History of an out of the way place a lot of us has not heard of. Those colored boulders were certainly different. Amazing that they cost 2.5 million to put them up. Ouch! Lol. 😎
I like Jean too thanks for showing this spot
Pops Oasis was on the old LA highway right where the Good springs road runs into it.
Wonderhussy nekkid in the desert, woohoo!
Great job. Good storyteller😍
Been in Jean many times will look closer next time through
I was at/in Jean way back in '81 when I was 20....lol....I was on the Jean Fire Dept before Jean had a Fire Dept...it was run by the prison.....
