  • Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #763
    Date of adventure: 11/28/23
While exploring abandoned places in the mountains outside Vegas, rather than camp in my car in freezing winter temperatures, I decided to get a cheap room at the closest hotel: Buffalo Bill's, in the weird border "town" of Primm. But...was it even open? Come with me as I investigate this strange property in the middle of nowhere.

Buffalo bills was my favorite place to stay with my husband and our three kids when we would go to Las Vegas years ago..... We used to ride the log ride and the roller coaster with our kids. We would drive up from San Diego and stay there for $29 a night for all five of us. I'm glad to see that they are remodeling and still open I hope someone takes over that can make it like it used to be ..

I have not been to Vegas since 1984 I believe it was the year the golden nugget opened . For me today it would probably be like being on mars . I do remember my first trip in1956 the family were on our way to yellow stone to go fishing . The thing that sticks in my mind, my dad and I used the bath room at some gas station ,and when you stepped into the stall and closed the door there was a slot machine on the inside of the door so while your doing your business you could gamble. My dad just started laughing he could not believe it. So those are my Vegas memories now at 81 it all seems kind of crazy looking back. Happy Trails

Never new about slots in stalls back then. That's when Vegas was safe & u didn't have to watch ur back @ all times, especially on the strip.

Buffalo Bills used to be pretty nice and fun. The rollercoaster, log ride, and train ride were fun. Outside tour rooms window is the remnants of the old monorail that crossed the freeway to Pete’s.

I performed at Buffalo Bill's back in 03, with 'Little Elmo and the Cosmos'. Great memories!! That Bonnie and Clyde death car used to be across the street at Whisky Petes. I did a gig there as well, back in 93, with a country band, 'Cochise'
As a professional musician, I've played thousand's of gigs, in hundreds of casinos all across Nevada, as well as around the world, on cruise ships. My music career started way back in 1974. What a crazy way to make a living!
I got in on the tail end of the good 'ol days. You younger musicians don't know what you missed!...Ahhhhhh...The fun I had! and I've loved every minute of it...
    Great post Sarah!!

There is a family fun center here in town that went in for a massive expansion in 2019. They opened the expansion in late 2019, then 2 months later everything was shut down.
I figured for sure the place was going to fold.
What I didn't know was, the business owned the property outright. And they paid cash for their expansion, so they were able to ride out the pandemic with no loans accumulating interest. When the lock down was lifted more than a year later, they stayed closed a couple of more months then opened once they were fully staffed.
    They are doing fine.

The roller coaster was named "Desperado". It was a great ride out in the desert. No loops but very fast and a lot of air time. You could see the entire world from the top of the first hill. A friend and I drove over one morning from SoCal just to ride it. Rode it four times, had breakfast and headed home. Unfortunately the coaster was closed a lot of the time because of the winds.

I LOVED riding Desperado. First drop is about 220' at a 70-dgree angle. They had to slow the rid down on one curve. It would run from Noon until about 10P. Then only Th-Sun. Now............not sure if still operational. Far better than the ride at NYNY.

Years ago when the coaster was up and running, my husband worked out at Primm for several months. The casino across the street gave workers discounts on weekly stays,so it was cheaper than commuting from Pahrump. Me and the kids spent a friday night/ Saturday bc there was a great outlet mall there too,AND the 2 casinos were connected by a tram maybe...or an enclosed walkway over I-15...can't remember, but I do remember that the Bonnie and Clyde car was on floor level with just ropes around it,so u could get close emough to look inside...pretty cool.

I LOVE that hotel and have stayed there many times. I was disappointed when I was in the area last year and it was closed. You asked WHY would people stay in Primm. I originally stayed in Primm to avoid resort fees that had become all the rage in Las Vegas (I know B. Bill's has them now, too). I found the hotel's interior and exterior motif interesting with a very "Casa Bonita" vibe (like the South Park episode). Also, the craps tables were $5 so you could have a great time without blowing too much money. I would drive from Los Angeles and not even go to Vegas, I would have all the fun I needed in Primm at Buffalo Bill's. It was cheap, fun, interesting, and Vegas is only a short drive away. If I were still living in LA I would literally drive there this weekend now that I know they're open again.

You could have stopped by and picked up a lottery ticket. Primm is kind of an emergency stop. When the 15 flooded and people couldn't drive through, folks had to stay somewhere, Buffalo Bill and Whiskey Peter's were the only places available. Also when there was a fire out in the desert, several FD battalions were camped out in the rooms. Both instances meant sold out rooms 😮😅

Just pulling in there for a bite 2 months ago, the ONLY eating place open inside was a Denny's. Most of the menu was what you find at all of them BUT when I asked for an alternative to French Fries with my sandwich, the Fruit Bowl I got was astoundingly delicious with variety exceeding the quality of the sandwich. You are quite correct. All the theme restaurants seem to only be open on weekends.

For some reason, I like to stay in old roadside motels. When I worked on those two brand new Cal Trans rest areas near Yermo in the summer of 1981, I stayed at the Calico Motel. It reminded me of the Bates Motel in Psycho. The restaurant next to it was where I had dinner every night for two weeks. Good over-spiced meatloaf and mashed potatoes. That place is now Peggy Sue's diner. Back then it was just a coffee shop and a nine room motel and I liked it. During the week I had the place all to myself.

For years I was an onsite computer warranty tech in Las Vegas and often had to take road trips, which I was always paid extra for and really enjoyed. I've been to quite a few of the places Wonderhussy features in her videos. A couple of the stores I supported were located in the mall at Primm. I also drove part time for a few years for Uber and Lyft, and would occasionally get a rider going out there, then I would just wait until someone in Primm wanted to go back to Vegas. Buffalo Bills wasn't quite as abandoned as it was on this video when I was last there, but still pretty empty with the same vibe. I have a picture somewhere I took of that fortune teller machine. I love these videos! She puts a lot of hard work into these and it shows. Yet, she seems to always have fun while shooting them. I keep hoping I'll bump into her out in the wild sometime. I'm a huge fan.

Back in the 90s Buffalo Bills was awesome! I took a few concerts at the Star of the Desert Arena. It was a decent venue and decent acts back then. The roller coaster was awesome and so was the water ride me and my friends used to drive from Vegas to Buffalo Bills to ride the roller coaster and log ride that was pre New York-New York and all the roller coasters in the casinos. It really used to be a nice place hopefully it gets back to that

Back a bit in time Primm was the designated pit stop for my wife to go potty (a 30 minute process). The drill was (a) pull over at Buffalo Bills, (b) wife heads for Lu, I go pee, (c) find an inviting dollar slot, (d) put in $200, (e) wife resurfaces, my stake vanishes, onwards to Vegas! Always happened - nothing ever changed (and NEVER won a nickel),

Also look at the welts on the mattress for the black dots or bed bug skins. Alway try to put your luggage on the sink in the bathroom or the tub. Bed Bugs can crawl up wood but not fake marble. Sleep tight and don't let the bed bugs bite. Love your videos.

      WoW, seriously?
I tried to get a job with a mining company & the interview was in mountains around there.
I would have been re-seeding land, the land that was mined & then needed to be replenished.
They said if I got the job I would have to get to Primm, then a bus would pick up the employees from there, transport them to the area behind those mountains then back at the end of the day & we needed to be aware of how much travel time was expected everyday for the job.
      Your post reminded me

I stayed there once in the 90’s as a teen with my family. We stayed there before we went to Vegas. I remember this trip vividly because even though I was too young to gamble I was just old enough for my parents to let us teens roam around freely on the property which gave me a feeling of independence. Me and my cousin and my brothers rode that roller coaster as well. It’s very surreal seeing that place now and the defunct amusement park. For someone like me it’s kind of eerie seeing that place empty. I can almost see the ghosts of the kids from the past enjoying that rollercoaster while the adults drink and gamble in the casino. Thanks for the upload! Brought back some memories.

That car used to be at Whiskey Pete's across I-15 but still in Primm. I used to stay in Primm because the rooms were cheap and it allowed me to explore around Mojave National Preserve and other places in the desert but have some civilization like a shower and a room with lighting. In winter when it is getting dark at 5PM camping is less desirable. I don't really like Las Vegas, so it was a quieter place to get those things.
It is sad to see Primm in decline, but between Vegas and the California casinos the market is oversaturated. It is a lot closer to get from L.A. to Morongo or San Manuel. Nobody needs Primm as much, and Jean even less. The only thing still open in Jean (11 miles up the road farther into Nevada) is the giant gas station...

Primm, or as it was known years ago, State Line has intrigued me for many years, since I drove by in 1995 and decided it was the most bizarre thing I've ever seen! I was there only a few months ago in September, but didn't stay in the hotel, hoping against hope that Desperado was going to be open as had been been reported. I walked through the carpark and casino, filming for a video, mainly featuring Desperado the rollercoaster. As always, your video was interesting, informative, funny and fascinating, you got it down to a fine art! 😊😊

I remember staying here in 2011, what people always call “Stateline”. I was 21 on low budget going into Vegas and wow, was this place a dump. Burnt melted iron stain on the carpet, blood looking stain on the comforters, and a lady in a mumu getting oxygen from paramedics in the hallway across from my room when I checked in.

several years ago we took our 2 youngest (teenage) kids out that way. We were driving from LA to Vegas and I had heard of the ghost town there. It was at that exit but on the other side of the highway. We got off there and drove toward the ghost town. Well, it was the ghost town of Primm and my son starts freaking out because this place is the place one of his favorite games was based on. The restaurant/biker bar was about the only thing in town. We stopped for lunch and they even had a soda bottle from the game.

Growing up in the 90s we lived 2 hours away from Primm. We stayed there all the time and from what I remember used to be so busy! Their arcade was huge always packed. The rollercoaster and log ride was so much fun! It's so sad to see how deserted it looks now considered back in the early 90s it was busy!

UPS tractor trailer driver for 41 years. For several years my run was from L.A. to Primm every night. I would meet the guys coming down from Beaver UT and our meet point was the back parking lot of Buffalo Bills at around 7am. This was around 2007-10 and even then it was pretty deserted. The only time it got busy was when they would have a big off road meet.

I visited there in its heyday . . . the log flume ride & roller coaster in full operation. Ditto, the monorail connecting across I-15 to that other resort/casino there (maybe is no longer(?)).
And (if I recall correctly) staged Old West shows / gunfights.
About 50/50 young parents with children and seniors or near seniors. It was absolutely BUZZING.
It's amazing to see it now in this state (although someone else showed the Rio recently not looking so different -- like a "ghost" casino -- and also 1M miles from when it used to have "Carnival" shows every 90 minutes or so that were really top notch.
As you say, with no gamers, how the heck does it make $$$$ sense? And not a single (even fast food) place to eat! That was a shocker.
But I love your part of the US, always have. Originally coming from a small island (England, UK) the expansiveness of the American Southwest caught my imagination when I first saw it in 1983, and never really let go since.
    Thanks for your videos! --Mike

I stayed at Buffalo Bills back in the 90’s with my parents; it was one of if not our first trip to Vegas (excepting for when my parents went on their honeymoon back in the 50’s). As I recall, at the time…and it was a short time…the Desperado roller coaster was the tallest coaster in the world (at least according to the Guinness Book). I don’t recall much about the hotel rooms themselves, but I certainly enjoyed the rides.

I remember when Primm was called Stateline and they originally built Buffalo Bills. I rode the coaster a couple times. It was fun but It beat the crap outta ya. lol The log ride was fun, too. I hear that some people like to pack a UV flashlight to check for protein based stains on the sheets in some of the low end motels and hotels. Sarah might want to add one to her Christmas shopping list. And I'm not sure about being given a room adjacent to a roller coaster. I know it isn't operational right now, but it probably will be again. I think Woody Allen did a movie a long time ago wherein he grew up in a house under a roller coaster. Not exactly the same thing I know, but it drove him mad. To me it would just be intolerably annoying, but since it isn't working it's just creepy. Then again you just said you like creepy places.

Glad to see it at least half-way open again. There was a small choo-choo ride and as I recall,.. it traveled through the main gaming room on tracks high up then went out and around the facility. I may have confused it with another casino that did the same near bullhead. Others may remember. The ceiling was a couple stories high. It seemed really huge inside. Also a rafting dark ride kind of thing that traveled through tunnels along a slow canal with animated animals and such which was separate from the water slide, (as I recall),. Loved the old prospector/miner theme, ( one of my favorites),. And that neon sign out front was epic! We often stopped there and never made it to vegas. Skipped the crowds and it had everything already.

It’s fascinating to see it still so lit up but an absolute ghost town. From LA, my family used to come here all the time when I was a kid because my dad and grandparents loved gambling and this was a great place for kids. The log ride was a blast with an interactive shooting game throughout the ride as well as animatronics and a good little drop. There were also rides inside the building and the arcade was fun too. The restaurant had a “river-side” theme to it. In its prime, it was awesome for families.

Always great to revisit this roadside relic. I remember all those times in the early 00s when myself and my high school friend would drive around the dirt roads of the greater Mojave going out from Victorville with our cheap mountain bikes shoved into the hatchback. After hours of hunting down trails and falling in the dirt, the buffet at Buffalo Bills would always hit the spot before turning around and heading back to the 'Ville for our respective security shifts at the various warehouses and construction projects.
