Shogan is impressive. It stars Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, and Anna Sawai. Shogun is a masterpiece on FX and this review explains why. It takes place in 1600s Edo Japan. Shogun is fantastic, based the novel was written by James Clavell in 1975. The 1980s miniseries Shogun was incredible. It starred Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune as Lord Toranaga Shogun. Shogun is not woke. This review is strictly on the Shogun 2024 version on FX which is owned by Disney. Shogun is a historical Japanese drama, taking place in 1600s during a civil war. The tv series streams on Hulu as well as the FX channel.
PLOT
Shogun is a wonderful American historical drama miniseries created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks. It is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell, which was previously adapted into a 1980 miniseries. The series premiered on Hulu and FX, with new episodes of the 10-episode series then releasing weekly.
Shogun is great and follows the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds and a mysterious woman samurai; John Blackthorne, a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga, a shrewd, powerful daimyō, at odds with his own dangerous political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance. Shogun is a samurai drama set in feudal Japan.

Whoever says John is a "white savior" has neither studied the history nor read the book nor watched the old series to the end.
I read 3 different articles where the writers stated that the showrunners "subverted the white savor trope." There is zero evidence that the showrunners themselves have ever stated this. It's the writers injecting their dumb beliefs into their stupid little articles to get clicks.
Don’t forget the great article that bemoans the “lack of Black representation “……🙄🤦♂️
@@brianjungen4059 I dismissed that black racist article as so much attention whoring.

I think fans of the original will enjoy this one. Did you watch Shogun when it originally aired?
Does Richard Chamberlain look like a "soda" mite? That scene's not aged well. 😂😂😂

Can’t recommend it unless I’ve seen all the seasons first
Series check: true. It would suck if something like the last episode ruined the entire experience leading up to it.
If you think Disney is not actively involved with how a massive budget production like Shogun functions, then you do not know a traditional studio works. Also the show is incredible.
I know exactly how a traditional studio works since I worked at many. That said, the entire joke is based on the fact that Disney can't seem to pull it's head out of it's butt when it comes to everything else but FX--the only channel that seems to be thriving and taking chances under their umbrella.
Lastly, you're 100% correct. Shogun is awesome.

Totally agree with the Disney comment. They need to keep their "programming opinions" off of this show.
When Disney keeps their dumb politics and DEI councils out of the writing room you get shows like The Bear and Shogun.
Shogun, Seven Samurai, Ran, Sword of Doom, Yojimbo, 13 Assassins, Harakiri...Samurai Cop.
Listen, they all can't live up to Samurai Cop but Shogun is getting there.

The expansion of the characters of Toranaga and Mariko is respectful to Clavell's Shogun. Some small changes here and there are fine, but Mariko hacking 10 ambushing samurai while Blackthorne struggled took me out of the story at that moment. She didn't girlboss it or anything, just unbelievable. I don't think the show is woke...yet. I hope FX isn't sucking us in to give us a dose of The Message later on. Fingers crossed.
This miniseries has me worried that they are going to drop the ball but I am liking it so far
I wanted to mention Mariko fighting in that ambush but it was a small moment. Same with husband giving up the best advantage he had and instead charged 50 guys.
@@LordoftheBlingxX Same...every episode I am both apprehensive and excited. I really don't want them to screw this up.
@@CopaExMachina I'm waiting for the new improved Mariko to prove she's a better archer than Buntaro. She really makes me miss Yoko Shimada and what she brought to the role.

Forming a cue to clap your cheeks.
How is anyone supposed to take you serious if you're going say Samurai Cop is one of the best samurai movies ever?
I take it you're not a fan of Samurai Cop...
Not “Hiroki”…it’s Hiroyuki Sanada. This presentation is closer to the book. The producers of the 1980 miniseries asked James Clavell to write a screenplay from Blackthorne’s POV. They felt it would be better received by white American audiences. This version is more balanced, like the original story. It wasn’t changed to be more PC, which was your assumption.
It wasn't my assumption, that was based on 3 different articles where the writers made the claim. I never said the showrunners pronounced their intent was to remove the white savor trope. If you don't like those writers making that claim, I suggest you contact their publications.
@@CopaExMachina The good news is that Hiroyuki Sanada has got lots of creative control, so the show has an appropriate Japanese character. I'm worried Anna Sawai is going to sneak modern Western feminist nonsense in. The rest of the show is pretty good.
@@DrCruelI noticed how much control they gave Sanada which is kind of crazy from a certain perspective but good for him. He's making all the right calls as Toranaga. Hard to fill the same shoes the great Torshiro Mufine once wore. I got my fingers cross that Anna Sawai's Mariko doesn't become a super-charged killing machine girlboss because of modern feminist empowerment...God that felt gross to even write.
@@CopaExMachina I really like the older show better, especially the cast, but that said you can really see that they're spending a lot more money on this film and have CGI to help. Sanada is not as playful as Mifune but behaves a lot more like a real daimyo, with a great deal more gravitas.
They have different purposes too. In 1980 the Japanese were in an industrial boom and were trying to alleviate prejudice against their economic import invasion. Yoko Shimada was a perfect voice for Japan - quiet, non-threatening, smart and sexy, an very intriguing. It was part of why 1980 *Shogun* was such a weeaboo hit - before weeaboos. The new 2024 *Shogun* is all about "authenticity" and probably at least a bit of the new "inclusivity" politics, but it also has more than a bit to do about boosting tourism. With mainland China and other Asian powers competing industrially, 'authenticity' of the tourist experience is what modern Japan is really promoting nowadays.
Honk the Like Button and Ring that Bell on the way out!
Samurai Cop > Seven Samurai. He's all seven samurai
