Shogun is the new FX/Hulu historical drama based on James Clavell's 1975 novel of the same name. In episode 4 John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) is furious when he learns he will have to stay in the remote fishing village to train troops for six months. Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) leaves for Edo and Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai) helps Blackthorne set up the new household he's entitled to as a hatamoto. The conflict escalates when Toranaga's son makes an impulsive decision.

The series is great on many levels. Including its attention to historical detail. The original story involved Blackthorne teaching musket tactics, but this show points out the samurai can expertly wield guns (which is historically accurate). On the show's podcast, a historical advisor noted that they chose to change the story and pivot to a training on cannons, hinting that this will pay off more later (as it did in history).

I'm enjoying the presentation of Shogun. I find the little deviations from the 1980 version interesting and enjoy the different interpretations as the mini-series provides. I do have a problem with the actress that is portraying Mariko, Anna Sawai, is miscast. I find it a difficult distraction that her English is not what one would expect from someone who grew up with another first language and her facial expressions are far too definitive for a Japanese woman. When I hear Sawai speak my mind is envisioning someone who grew up in California, Florida or some less well-known US possession in the Pacific ocean and that distracts me from becoming immersed in the character and her performance. Fuji on the other hand I find very genuine and I actually enjoy the slightly different interpretation of her story. I think overall this interpretation is less cushioned for our western morals and I prefer the truth in this production thus far. I was disappointed in Mariko being clearly identified as she comes to Blackthorn's bed as opposed to the innuendo of that action in the 1980's version where the Mariko character denies that it was her and alluding that there was nothing wrong with her providing him her maid in the night leaving us unsure but suspecting that it was truly her. I like this latter approach reinforcing the discreet and covert aspects of both social and political behavior which is not necessarily exclusive to Japanese society. I'm very much enjoying the presentation and look forward to discovering how the production makes other interpretations which differ from the 1980's version in future episodes. Like most of you I can't wait to see the next one either. I am grateful that they did not release all of the episodes at once or I would certainly be sleep deprived until I watched them all. Cheers !

Episode 4 was a banger, and while I very much enjoyed eps 1 - 3, there was some world building that's really starting to pay off now, and I'm here for it. I'm digging this show almost entirely, the only weak spot is all the lens flare/blurring the frame to hide/blend the overabundance of major CGI, which sometimes takes me out of the narrative. So far I'm giving Shogun an 8 out of 10, glad you're covering it Pete.

But I'm pleasantly surprised. So far this is a masterpiece - staying with the book, but also looking at things more through the eyes of the Japanese than the Gai-Jin. I would love it if Fx re-made Tai-Pan as that is my favorite of Clavell's books and the Movie starring Brian Brown was disappointing. Hai Peppers-Sama - Domo

It also makes more sense, as is explained in the show itself.
Blackthorne would not be well trained in infantry line tactics, but he would as a naval privateer be schooled in the at the time modern gunnery.

I think what struck the Zuko and his Samurai was cannon chain shot. The day before Blackthorne had mentioned loading and firing the cannon with chain shot. Cannon balls by themselves are too pinpoint to cause that kind of damage. Those samurai were torn to bits.

    • @brianlanning836

In the 1980 series, it was Mariko. But in the conversation between them in the morning, she explained to him how dangerous it was for her since Buntaro was still alive. So she made it clear to Blackthorn that there had to be a carefully constructed lie to cover their tracks.
In this one, Buntaro is dead (for now). But it was still majorly inappropriate for them to get together. They did a good job of making it clear it was Mariko while allowing everyone to believe it was some courtesan.

The thing you missed that was a highlight in the episode for me was when yabu proudly leads toranaga into the village, where yabu’s wife bought expensive sake. While the soldiers in unison cheering to the motions of toranga’s fan, yabu turns around to discover with dismay toranaga still fan-leading the cheers but leaving on the boat. Yabu’s face was confused and disappointed and his wife saying she should’ve bought the cheaper sake, it was comedy.

I know the story... *the novel* ... very well. And I've been loving this so much. Pretty much have had every epi playing on repeat almost... until now.
Episode 4 is fine, if a bit rushed about Mariko and Blackthorn's time in Ajiro. Still... It's great... right up until the writers blow the story all to hell with Toranaga's son turning cannons on Jozen. As far as I can tell, with this one completely unnecessary re-write they have made it impossible to tell the rest of the story even close to how it was written.
They've done So. Freaking. Well. with it so far I just don't understand why they had to do this! I honestly have no idea how they can possibly get it back on track.
They made *such* a big deal about being authentic. And I love that! I just wish they could've managed to be as faithful to the writer.

I felt zero chemistry between Blackthorne and Mariko in earlier episodes. I guess the hot spring scene changed everything and then she jumps into his bed. That's pretty hilarious. Mariko has plenty of freedom for a newly widowed 17th century woman.

Good show, but I find it extremely annoying how the main protagonist is English, and on top of it he’s an extremely moral charming brave character. England had nothing to do with early Spanish Portuguese explorations of new peoples and land. It’s kind of like having a story of the American revolution with the main protagonist being a a moral brave intelligent handsome Mexican. The discovery of Japan its people and its land is Portuguese history not English history. It’s Beyond annoying

Blackthorne is based on a historical character who became a hatamoto for Tokugawa Ieyasu. The story takes a lot of creative liberties, but an English sailor arriving on a Dutch vessel while the Portuguese had control over trade in the region isn't one of them.

I enjoy movies and shows, but dont understand how Americans love praising actors so much. As if they're cultural heroes. They pretend for a living. And they get paid way WAY WAY too much for it. And Hollywood is far more disgusting behind the scenes than most have any idea. So as someone who is from Europe, it's just odd seeing and hearing Americans essentially worship these actors. "Look at how well they make faces, and portray emotions...".. Yes they're very good at being other people. In Europe we call people who enjoy fooling others "sociopaths".
