main bearing clearances on k20 are .0019 max, look up a chart on oil temperature vs viscosity for that clearance and you'll see u can safely use 5w30, 10w30 or even higher in race situations at high oil temps (220 degrees and higher)..the manual even states for cars overseas that u can us 5w30 or 10w30...if u live in a climate where is below 0 a lot use 0w30...not to mention 2-3% fuel dilution will lower the viscosity of the oil even lower to like 0w15..there has been oil analysis done showing that 0w20 oil has significantly less shear protection at operation temps than 5w30..just like the manual says to use 87 octane on accords vs 91 on the fl5 when the engines are basically the same.(same compression of 9.8:1)
Man thank you so much for all the info this was what I really wanted to know so I really appreciate it.
The best thing Bill said was, "I don't know". That was his response to your oil question. That is a sign of honesty. Most people will just give an answer, whether they are right or wrong. I personally would stick with the manufacturer's recommendation. Recommended tire pressures should be found on the data plate, near or on the driver's door. At least that's where they are on American cars.
Facts, he told me a lot more stuff off camera but he said on camera he didn't want to say anything that he wasn't 100% on, he's a really good dude though gave me a lot of information on these cars, also yeah you're right it's better to stick with what the manufacturer recommends.

Great video RCF Bill seems like a really knowledgeable and good person from the video alone it makes me want to be a part of the Honda community after watching how the both of you interacted.
Yeah man Bill was really cool and super knowledgeable I'm happy I was able to meet him and ask him the questions that I did.
I'm super glad I stumbled across this vid that came out before I was subscribed! Educational videos are always appreciated! Lol
Thanks a lot I'm happy you found my channel brother because it's always fun reading your comments!
@RaceCarFriends You're welcome, my friend! I really appreciate all the great content, and I am glad I found your channel
@@speeddemonRS3 Thanks again brother, we have some crazy content coming up soon that I think you're really going to enjoy.
This Honda teach is just repeating what it says in the honda manual for the last 7 years. Moral of the story is read your manual. lol
Lol agreed, this is pretty much a cheat code for all the people that don't read their manuals or for those that don't have a Civic Type R yet.
Truth is no one reads them.
They shoukd be made into audiobooks you mandatorily have to listen to while brealing the car in over 5000 kms @RaceCarFriends
Lol facts!
Read the manual of the GR corolla and never go above 85 mph...🥴
Hes not special at all he says is what the manual says he's full.of bs
He said that personally he would not change it before 5k. A lot of people change out the oil after break in period 600 miles. Some people beat on the car for the first 600 miles instead of baby it. Rule of thumb would be to change out your oil every 6 months or 5k miles. Oil degrades and if your car sits most of the time you should change the oil. Would it be smart to leave the factory oil in it for more than a year. My maintenance minder was at about 40% after 6months.
Based on what he said I believe the computer monitors everything and if it senses any issues with the oil it will give you a warning to change it out.
When it was 40% did you still change it?
@@1anreI did change it! Car felt better after it was changed. I had almost 1500 miles on it and the oil maintenance minder was at 40% And I had the vehicle for six months. It mostly sat in the garage.
What should you do of your fl5 sat for months on a showroom floor because dealer markups killed thee market
Thanks for the good tips from a trusted source.
No problem you're welcome.
If you change the oil early, and feel nervous about out the lack of moly, just add some MSO2 back in with the fresh oil. It’s not magic. The moly from the grease dilutes and helps prevent scoring from tight tolerances during break in. Adding it back in as an additive is no different than getting it from preexisting grease
Nice I never knew that was an option, thanks for the info I really appreciate it.
Two of the greatest hot hatches ever. VW and Honda.
Thanks I agree.
I side with Bill on this one. I'll stick to what the manufacturer recommends. They do need to give us these oil changes at 5k miles though
Yup I agree, he did say that he didn't see it hurting the car but better to be safe than sorry I always say.
"Anything can happen" is the new backup phrase
CYA is the name of the game in 2024 lol.
That blue Type R is nice.
Thanks I appreciate it!
Well that sums it up for me! Great advice coming from a Honda Tech giving information for people who works on these cars daily. That inventory is huge on the Civics! It’s hard to come by where I’m located. 5W-30?! Huh sounds like you miss that American motor 😂
Facts they had great inventory and aww man look at Bluprint reading my mind with that 5w30 comment! 😆
@@RaceCarFriends 🤣🤣🤣
Awesome video and been thinking about getting a civic type r in the future!!
Thanks a lot I appreciate the compliment I hope you get yours soon!
this was helpful. The mechanic is wise!
I agree and I'm happy you found it useful, thanks a lot for your comment.
I just follow the factory specs with respect to oil changes and basic maintenance (brakes, spark plugs, diff fluid, coolant, etc.). It has never failed. However, things change a little bit when you modify cars well beyond factory limits. In those circumstances, I tend to change things out sooner than factory.
Side note, I have a full array of parts to install when my Type R is delivered to my house. Gotta get it setup proper before I hit the streets with it. 🤣
Yup very true I agree.
I'm gonna be "that guy"...
Technically, when the pressure in a tire goes down, the effective diameter of the tire gets smaller, so that wheel will spin FASTER than the others.
Lol you sir just won comment of the day.
good video! new FL5 owner. thank you sir
You're welcome and thanks, congratulations on yours, what color did you get yours in?
@@RaceCarFriends sonic grey sir!
Changing my oil to motul 5-30 improvemed the oil and water temperature by a lot. Australian climate is hot.
Nice thanks for commenting this I will do the same.
On your Type R?
I think so.
@@1anre yes on the FL5. 0-20 is only for emissions reason and to be honest the fuel economy is still the same with the 5-30.
6:41 not surprised mechanic goes by manufacturer recommendation.
Here in Jamaica people claim that 0w20's bad, despite manufacturer themselves specifying it on the cap in engine bay, and also specifying valid temp range under which Jamaica falls in the manual
Oh wow what oil do they recommend yuh run in ah yard?
Oil weight has to do with bearing clearances that’s how oil weight is figured out, thicker oil won’t blow up the car but it’s not optimal
Here in Florida is not warmer. It’s F*cking Hot as Hell. 🔥
Lol Facts!
3:00 honestly, aren't we running out of time to get type Rs? I'm new to the game and am eyeing a CTR, but I'm reading that they will "likely" be discontinued in 26 or 27?
Yup that's what I'm hearing too, I'd say try to get them ASAP just to be safe.
Stack up your paper while you wait for one to be available
@@1anre that's exactly what I'm doing. Not sure how close I'll get but my "goal" is to see how close to buying on in cash I can get before they announce the 2025 and see what's what.
Great info dude.
I have an ITS here in FL too so the same info applies to them too. ❤
Thanks brother and that's whats up, what color is your ITS in?

BTW a good question for the Honda tech was carbon build up in our engines.
Fact or Fiction*

My 2022 SI is now in the shop for a new Rack ( waitied 6 months for a new one ) and just happen my engine oil had a major dump on the road.......not a happy camper
Aww man that sucks.
At what mileage did you end up changing your oil?
I just got to 3k miles and didn't change it yet, I wanted to change it at 1k miles though.
@@RaceCarFriends2k more Miles and the Maintenance minder should be at 20%
@@1anre Cool.
Moto Tune method break in. Keep the engine loaded for the first 25 miles then change the oil.
Sounds good to me!
This is great info big bro 👏🏼🤝 good stuff
Thanks I appreciate you.
Has Bill see high mileage TypeR motors? Is carbon build up an issue?
Great question, I'll follow up with him and see.
Not DI, research then ask questions
@@Ts-zy4bw What type of fuel injection does the Type R use?
Wait...don't change oil till you hit 5,000 miles or before 5,000??

Did my first oil change on my fl5 at 10k miles

I lived behind this dealership and I bought parts for my civic there lol that’s so random
Lol wow crazy what a small world!
In the Middle East, Civics use 10W40
Wow okay that makes sense.
First off how do you break it in. I might get a type S.
You'd need to read your owners manual to know how to break in your vehicle and both cars are pretty awesome.
What if I want a 09 Honda civic lx ? 🥺
Lol buy it!
And I thought I was bad changing my oil at 1k and put Amsoil full synthetic in.
Aww man you didn't waste any time!
lol u got a gti as well,I’m thinking of trading my tuned full bolt on gti for type r…idk yet tho
Lol yeah man they are both great vehicles, the Type R stock is what a tuned GTI would be I think, the problem with the Type R is that it feels a lot bigger than the GTI and stock for stock it's lower too so you have to worry about scraping where in the GTI you won't have to worry.
Hold the line people don’t pay over msrp! Only way dealers will stop 🛑 the greed. I just got 2025 sonic grey at msrp!
@@Veterans-e2c Nice congratulations!! You're right!
Who makes this tech a specialist on the type r if you tune it then you can take a thicker oil in to consideration i went to a tech because my tpms was going off no matter what presure and they could never fix it so i bought a scan tool and whats happened i fixed it myself how well these cars computer abs system has a winter and a summer setting and if you want to be higher in air pressure just keep it 2 pounds lower in the back i myself have mine at 39 rear 41 front the wheel protections reasons and never had a tpms light
Yup major difference between a dealership tech and tech that specializes on modifying vehicles.
Yes
Nate was outside!
I only put about 100 miles on mine per month. 5k miles is going to take me a few years. Lol. I'll just change it annually on its birth (purchase) date
Lol smart! And year we're in the same boat with the mileage 😆
This. I have the same usage and Honda said to change it annually if you don’t reach the mileage they say.
Oh wow cool, thanks for the confirmation much appreciated.
Why would you spend this much $ to drive it 100 miles a month?
@@Ts-zy4bw why not?
5000 miles for the moly grease to dissolve? Should happen in the first 100 miles.
That makes sense.
Why would you put 5w30 on a 0w20 car?
Because Florida is hot year round and 5W30 would offer better protection.
@@RaceCarFriendsin Puerto Rico we put 5w30 for the same reason it’s to hot all year
@@rafaelortiz2154 Yup see exactly, that's what I want to do here as well.

This is super distressing to me I feel bad that the video's dimensions were an aberration to your eyes, may you find other videos that are more comforting to your optical digestion. 🙏🏿

Anyway, peace, enjoy!
@@MKu64 You're right you're right, normally before I go through all the work of filming and editing a video, I look into my kids eyes and say children today I'm going to do my best to film in a way that will not offend MKu64's ocular field of view so please pray for me that I do everything in a way that will make him happy, sorry I didn't do a good job this time around I should probably sell all my equipment and re shoot everything until it lives up to your expectations.
@@RaceCarFriends You confuse 'offend' with 'find it difficult to see what's going on and therefore won't bother watching any further' 😂. I do however enjoy your enthusiasm in both the video and your comments 😅
@@MKu64 Lol no worries I'm happy you enjoy the enthusiasm, it's just not in the cards for me to change up equipment at the moment, sorry to lose you as a viewer though.
If you wanna get the most value for your trade, try not being broke and buying your car with cash and not financing, or selling on the market for actual value which will net better than their “best value” guaranteed unless you are soo bad in the car game that you shouldn’t be doing any car game any more. At that point, you shouldn’t be buying any car. Broke! Fun stuff.
