- Reviewing the entire season of Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers. Was it good, bad, or a little of both? Is it a top tier season or one of the worst? Here are my thoughts.

I still think there are way too many idols and advantages, and given the preview for next season, it looks like the show is heading in this advantage-ridden direction :/
I'm also still annoyed that Jeff previewed the FTC saying "minds will be changed at FTC" and then the final vote was a hefty Ben win...
I also agree about why the heck does Jeff still talk to audience members during the finale...nobody wants this..

Chris Reggi I think the amount of idols was fine, but too many advantages.
I don't mind advantages, but I agree that there are way too many of them in modern seasons. A possible solution could be to nerf all the advantages to make it so that each castaway can only use them once in the entire game. Whether it be an idol, an extra vote, the legacy advantage, a vote-stealer or a challenge advantage, once someone plays an advantage, they can no longer use any of the advantages ever again. Sadly, that's some wishful thinking that will probably never come true.
This is my review of HHH about a week after it wrapped up! I think the season was pretty good overall, but not perfect. Hopefully I'm being fair!
Peridiam Better than Game Changers. I wouldn’t have minded if they did Game Changers this next season instead of this year, because there’s so many good castaways that would return from this season.
Anthony Mendez In terms of the last few seasons, I felt it was better than Game Changers and Kaoh Rong (I know, controversial statement there). The cast was solid overall, with no terrible people in it, unlike Survivor: Go Wrong

I feel like if I ranked all of the seasons HvHvH would be somewhere around the middle of the list.
Final 6 to the finale was complete trash. The reunion wasn’t a reunion.

Im fine with the twist but I feel like idols need to be balanced. Either an idol canceler or something like "you can't play an idol next round" need to be introduced. An idol canceler was put in Aus Survivor 2017 and it was fantastic. Also they need to make idols harder to find/more skillful to find. Idols at challenges WORKS- Wentworth and Jeremy in Cambodia and Troyzan in GC were great moments, and it actually makes the game harder.
I agree I kind of like that idea because it is in front of everyone and there is a significant amount of backlash which could come out of it if you’re caught.
This was one of the greatest seasons. I was rooting for Ben, and the rigging was totally random and ended up in Ben’s favor. Ben playing his idols was great! And the winner was the sole outsider for days!
I agree with the idols at challenges. I also like an idol canceler, but only if there's like one in the entire season, maybe two. Too many idols and twists in recent seasons have hurt the show but this is a good idea to help recover.
I feel that there should be a new rules that if an idol is used successfully (i.e. used in a way that prevented someone from going home), then the person saved from that elimination cannot be saved again from another elimination.
Well there was the idol nullifier in David vs Goliath
If I were to describe this season in a nutshell, it would be... "A consistently solid season that ends in the worst way possible".
This season was not amazing, but I thought it was a consistently solid season with good editing and storytelling. The cast had a lot of surprising standouts that I wouldn't have have expected to be standouts. But that finale was a bottom 3 finale that gave hints that the show could possibly jump the shark.

Bobby Bobby I don't think Ben was a terrible winner per se, I think it ended up feeling like his win was handed to, rather than worked for.

I wouldn’t mind Ben winning if he made it without the twist. It was impossible to predict and was so late into the game that it felt unfair. At least the contestants on Ghost Islands were told about the twist before the season started. I hope they just get rid of it entirely it makes it more suspenseful, but I’d rather have a less suspenseful fair tribal. If a player goes out at 4 clearly they made a mistake somewhere in the game and got punished for it.
Paul LePere This season could have been a top 10 season if the final 4 twist didn't exist and Devon got the win he deserved. I wouldn't have cared about the slow start as long as the season finished strong, but that ending left a sour taste in my mouth.
GerMart No, Devon had connections with everyone on the jury, while the jury stated that Chrissy's social game was lacking. Devon also had quite a few signature moves on his resume such as forming a long-lasting alliance with Ashley and voting her out without making her bitter (she said she was okay with Devon writing her name down in her Ponderosa video), forming the heroes-hustlers alliance, having Ben play double agent, provoking Ben into playing his idol early so everyone was sure that it would be played and it wouldn't nullify any votes, and making sure that Ben (who had an idol) wouldn't get rid of him by voting for Mike at the final 5.
That was a season with a lot of likeable players. I was so sad because of the fact that they were sent home too early. Hope to see Jessica, Desi, Cole, Joe and Devon back for another season. They have a lot of qualities and deserve a second chance!

This season would’ve been okay, but that damn final 4 twist was easily one of the worst in survivor history. It genuinely spoiled the entire season for me. Krissy earned that final spot and beat Ben fairly. This season I likely will never watch again. It’s not the bottom like redemption island. But I don’t like it at all.
This season furthers the narrative that you need a story to win survivor. Adam's mom, Sarah being a police officer, and Ben being a marine. It doesn't look good. Pretty much all of the moves Ben was involved in (except for his first idol play) could be credited to someone else, such as his undercover acting (Devon's idea), his involvement with the JP vote (Lauren's idea). Devon and Chrissy's gameplay far overshadowed his own and I'll never stop being salty that he won. I pray the next season isn't so blatantly obvious about who production wants to win.
Ryan Thurston it was even more obvious that either dom or Wendell was going to win since the second episode
At least Wendell didn’t have a dumb sob story we had to hear about, but idols ruined the season, just like they did in Game Changers and HHH.

Ryan Thurston Also, it’s not completely about whose idea it was, and although Ben “cherry picked” a lot of his moves from other players, the final tribal council is all about how you market yourself. And Ben marketed himself well
Not a fan of this season at all, or Ben as a winner. From the get-go, he was my winner pick, not because of his strategic ability, but because of the completely biased winner edit that only became obvious after the merge. As someone who watches survivor for the strategy, I felt like Chrissy was bar-none the most strategic player in recent years. She very easily could've been voted out instead of JP, and whatever that's it. But because she was able to win 4 challenges and push herself to the end, I felt it completely wrong that the new twist destroyed all of that strategy-the Alan vote, the Roark vote, the Ali vote, etc. So, I'd rate the pre-merge a 7/10 with you, but I'd rate the post-merge a 5/10. I simply didn't feel like Ben had any strategy other than finding idols again and again. But the biggest non-rigging/finale problem I had with the season was the unlikability of the whole cast, with the more likeable people being voted out before the merge. At the final 6, I found myself rooting for absolutely no one. Unlike you, I don't want to see any of these castaways be brought back, except maybe Chrissy, Lauren, and Devon. So, as a whole, I give HHH a 6, which places it (on my personal rankings) at 31/35 between One World & Worlds Apart, very close to the bottom of the list.
Had a man been the one who went on an immunity challenge run like Chrissy did, he would have been the greatest Survivor since Tom Westin or Mike Holloway. It is frustrating.
Chrissy was a good physical player, but her social game was lacking and she and her alliance got very complacent at the end, which is why Ben kept dodging bullets. Had they tried to find the idol themselves and kept him from getting it, she would likely have won.

This is a really cool idea. Varner/Zeke, Ben the marine, Adam's mom, Jeremy's pregnant wife, and Terry/Jenna leaving for their family could all be really good moments. Several evacuations fit the bill also.
Worst ending of any season. How can they say that the final immunity winner gets an "advantage" when it cost her the game? It made the show looked rigged.
The show was rigged. That's why it looked rigged.
The "advantage" was the information of the twist, not the twist itself. The twist would happen regardless. I do agree that it makes the show look rigged though.
How do you know the twist would've happened regardless. You don't know they didn't add that to help him.
Not an expert but pretty sure that is a huge violation of FCC regulation, don't think they would risk a 17 year TV empire just to help one guy.

I’m honestly so bitter and mad at this twist that this is a bottom five season for me. This season saw too much wasted potential. Probably the most wasted potential out of any season. And at the end Chrissy should have won. I didn’t even like Chrissy, but I was ok with her winning because she was the one who deserved it the most and she actually earned it. Final two tribals sucked and are some of the worst in survivor history. Sorry Jeff, your fans don’t agree with you.

That is true game changers did have a lot of wasted potential lol. But I’d still give this season the most because the only contestants that wasn’t a waste in potential are Simone, Patrick, mike, Ryan, and Ben. Everyone else is wasted potential. In game changers you’re looking at a pitiful cast where a lot of them shouldn’t have come back at all period. And btw in game changers all the good people got screwed so that stinks.

Honestly this is one of those rare seasons where I liked the premerge better than the post merge. After that people kept making dumb decisions and Ben became invincible. It was a mediocre season for me.
It was basically Worlds Apart with a More Negative winner and faced with a more likable opposition.
@@SWSUMaster how is ben a negative winner? him and mike play the same game where they needed to win immunity or have an idol. sure ben got lucky at the end, but why should that make such an impact on our opinion?
@@lafingscarecrow I mean, that style of Gameplay doesnt make you Heroic. Ben was in that Situation because he was upsetting people and rubbing them the wrong way. He only became a threat once he began recieving Idols and people saw that as a threat. But before the leadup. You'd see Quite a bit of Villainy in Bens Edit that the Story wants you to forget once the "Ben Cornonation Edit" Begins.
@@SWSUMaster that's not why ben became a target. for one thing, no one knew he had the idol until the lauren vote. and second, the reason that ben got targeted at seven was because of how good of a game he was playing. that led to his alliance realizing that he could win and deciding to send him home. i'm not going to deny that the idols didn't make his target smaller, but ben was playing a great game, and that's why he was in trouble

I know it was very recent, but I personally didn’t like it. I found every episode to be predictable except for the episode where Alan was eliminated. Couldn’t wait for the season to end. But good video!

Just stumbled upon on your channel a few days ago and absolutely love the vids. Great work! I'm 100% with you on the fire making twist really bringing down this season. I would love to know if producers had planned on doing it at the final four from day one because it ended up being a really poor look for Survivor to "gift" Ben the win. I know Probst said it returns next season but all players knowing it ahead of time completely changes it's impact. There is ALWAYS a favorite with a target on their back heading into the final challenge. Sometimes they win it and go on to win the game and it's fantastic television and sometimes they don't and it's heartbreaking but that just how Survivor has always worked. I went into the finale thinking, "Man it would be amazing if Ben somehow could pull this off and then after the twist I just hoped he wouldn't win. What a brutal game ruining twist for Devon and ultimately Chrissy. Again, great channel love the vids! Keep up the great work.

You could do a video on best final tribal moments? I always think of penners amazing speech in Philippines, but it could also be best speeches from final 3 or most shocking votes. Love your channel you have great commentary and editing!

That final mom speech from Chrissy was what made her the strongest player this season, as it showed how Chrissy balanced her social and personal identities with the strategic and physical elements of the game to get her to day 39
Oh please, she acted like an overbearing Mom throughout. She treated Ryan and Devon just like her 2 real life sons. She sacrificed her stronger son, Devon, to take out her foe (Ben) and dragged her weaker son, Ryan, to the finale. She’s a true Actuary/Investor- she hedged her moves - Ryan and Devon were her insurance.
I wanted to see her lose one of the Immunity Challenges to see if one of “her boys” would have voted her out since Ben and her were the threats. She was too full of herself and that Mom speech was b.s. She’s a SMART business woman 👍🏼 I’m an Investor too, so I got everyone of her moves - but I would have kept “eyes” on Ben 24/7.
She should of let Ryan and Devon decide among themselves who was to make the fire against Ben. Since 2nd Place wins $100k (Christy) and 3rd Place $80k (Ryan) - so she really screwed over Devon. Final 3 had to include Ben and Chrissy based on the edit.
R Rodriguez But seeing how she swooped Ryan and Devon under her wing by "mothering" them, leading to her screwing Devon over, whilst never being targeted post-Jessica boot, does this not show the power Chrissy had in the game WITHOUT any idols and through social plays?
MilesBradC 777 I'm surprised Chrissy didn't win because her FTC performance was amazing. It was a drop-the-microphone moment when she was able to tell Joe a personal fact about himself.

Up until that twist, this was a great season! Great cast as well, probably one of my favourites in a while. It's just that twist that ruined it for me - I was a big Ben fan, don't get me wrong, and was rooting for him, however his win just doesn't sit right with me cos of it.
Either way still a great season and like you said a lot of characters I'd love to see play again, especially Chrissy and Devon.

I agreed with almost everything you said. However, I loved the Roark and Chrissy feud since I was shocked by the outcome. I would love to see Chrissy, Ali, Alan, Devon, Desi, and Lauren all come back one day. Great video like always.

In no particular order,
Underrated : Amazon, Guatamala, Gabon, San Juan Del Sur, and Vanuatu
Overrated : Game Changers, Millennials vs Gen X, Palau, HHH, and Micronesia.
also chrissy was underrated. there were multiple times pre-merge that she pulled through and there were 4 times that she won immunity post merge (a few of which she could've been booted otherwise)
Ben was the only one who deserved to win in the end. I could not believe when he didn't win the last immunity challenge, and honestly, I was ok with this twist for this season because by the final 6, Ben was the only one that should win the season, and I'm glad he did. Now, granted, I actually don't like the fire making twist for seasons after, but obviously the producers can't just throw it in for one season because then it really becomes obvious that they put it in just so that Ben could win. lol! I think Ryan, Chrissy and Devon all got WAY too big for their britches by the end and none of them deserved to win. The only other person past the merge that I would have liked to win this season was Lauren. I was happy with how this season turned out, even if I was constantly stressed if Ben was gonna make it on the way there.

If I pretend the f4 twist never happened then HHH is a really solid season of survivor overall. Great cast of new players being added to the survivor family. Fun storylines and character building and some of the most amazing shots and camera work survivor has done. The easiness of the idol findings put a bit of a damper on it, but not too much. What this season was, was a lot of potential shown in the pre-merge that got me really excited for the post merge. The pre-merge got me to really like almost all of the cast, including those voted out. But the whole Ben vs everyone storyline got fucked up when the storyline was supposed to end with: Ben by the smallest margin failed to win the f4 immunity, CHrissy, Devon and Ryan's plan can FINALLY be put in action, Ben fails to convince anyone to tie for a firemaking challenge, Ben pays the price of playing with the largest target on his back, and Chrissy finally gets to take out her friend-nemisis by snatching away the immunity neclace from Ben yet again. This storyline wasn't able to be completed properly, which ruins the whole storyline itself.
I didn't like the final four advantage since the players didn't know about it before the start of the season. I did like this season overall tho a lot of like able players this season that I would like to see play again. The final tribal council this season was also really good

Agree 100% with you about the season. Ben was a really nice character, up intil final 6 where he just stopped playing survivor. The cast was amazing, and I would even like to see some pre mergers back. But the overall came short.

I would actually rank this season pretty high and I know I will have lots of disagreement about this, but I felt it was a strong season. I'd like to see you rank all of the seasons, and which one ends up being the best. I've watched since the end of S18, but I've done research and made up for lost time, and your videos actually help with that. I'm not one that scorns the advantages or twists, because they do make for good TV, and the same old format would get old. I personally thought this F4 twist wasn't all bad, and I will say I am a Ben fan, and wanted him to win all along, but regardless I thought the twist spiced it up a little bit. It was a hell of a lot better than the juror removal twist from S32 in my opinion. I think some seasons like redemption island or south pacific could have used this twist, especially the former since it was so predictable. Of the seasons I have personally watched (so from Tocantins-present) I would probably put this one as number 4, behind S33, S31, and S34 in that order.

I generally agree with a lot of what you had to say. Some are using the advantages/idols/etc. to pan Ben as a winner, but I really can't fault him for what the producers throw in there either.

Since I started watching Survivor, I've been grading each episode. My S35 overall average rating was a 8.33 putting the season on 16th place on my list (Between Blood vs. Water with 8.37 and Guatemala with 8.30). This was my lowest score for a season since Worlds Apart (8.13).
what ever happened to the advantage that ryan had. anyone know
he willed it to chrissy for the first tribal council. then at the final 5, chrissy tried to use it to trick ben into thinking they found the idol he was looking for, but that was a complete waste of time since ben already had the idol

A lot of people are upset with the new twist and how it was introduced. I can understand why it seemed to be "invented" so that Ben could win and I obviously don't know for sure if that was the case or not. However, even with the twist, Ben still had to earn his way into the final three and then earn the votes to win the game. I thought the twist was brilliant for a few reasons. The first of which was that it gave Devon a way to beef up his resume. If he had taken Ben out, I think it would have been Devon as the winner because he would have had the final cherry on top to beat Chrisy. She had one four individual immunities and had played a pretty solid social game and, in my opinion, should have won if it had been her, Devon, and Ryan as the final three without the twist. Devon recognized the opportunity and unfortunately came up short. I think this new twist is excellent. It allows players to once again actually win their way into the top. Someone could win all the immunity challenges but one and get the boot and that always sucks, but this helps them have a chance making even after being identified as a target. Looking back on season 1, Kelly had to win her way to the end and many people thought she should have won over Richard. I like this twist because it gives players who are playing hard a real shot to win outside of the dreaded vote. Ben found immunity idol after immunity idol and that was a flaw in the other players' games because they knew the odds were that they would have a chance to vote him out. This twist ensures that players won't be so complacent because that target they have wanted out for weeks can sweep right past them by simply playing Survivor as hard as he or she can. I'm looking forward to seeing this twist implemented in the future! As far as how this twist was introduced, Jeff always says this game is a living, changing thing and I expect any twist to be introduced this way!

One thing that I don't see harped on enough for this season is so many things about it just felt phoned in and generic. Like they were looking at good seasons and following a Template.

UTR Girl Screwed By Swap: Check
Tribe of Carefree Personalities Targeted and Pagonged: Check
Bikini Girl Targeted at Merge First Due to Idol Paranoia: Check
Young Guy tries to win it out but loses and gets booted fast: Check
Middle Aged Blue Collar Guy goes from leading the alliance to targeted: Check
Same Guy finds his game dead in the water and needs to use Immunities to get him to the end: Check
We Need to take Out or he's going to win: Check
The Leader Underdog Makes it to the Final 3 and Wins: Check
The Winner has a Sob Story Revealed at the Final Tribal Council: Check
Older Woman Loses at Final Tribal Council: Check

There were a lot of great players this season
I thought that end twist killed the season and turned it into a below-average season. I should also say that this was the first season I watched after taking a long absence after Heroes Vs. Villains. I do plan on doing full season retrospectives on my channel in the future, covering how the game started with Borneo and how it evolved since then.

Chrissy deserved to win period. Ben relied SOLELY on the POSSIBILITY on there being an idol or twist. The real question is how did classic Survivor winners win WITHOUT hidden immunity idols? The answer is, they outwitted, outplayed and outlasted in a respectable fashion.
I truly believe that the best winner wins and no one is ever robbed. But, in some particular cases, the jury does not have enough knowledge, like this case for instance. Let's go over who played the best in the three most important factors of Survivor:
Physical: The most overrated, yes. Still an important factor, yes. Chrissy won 1/2 of the immunity challenges this season. The fourth female to win 4 IMMUNITY CHALLENGES. This matches the prowess of Kim Spradlin! It's clear that Chrissy won this aspect over Ben and Ryan who won minimal challenges and no individual ones.
Strategic: This one is a tough one. It's obvious that Ben had three smartly executed idol plays. I can not deny his intelligence. However, Chrissy successfully orchestrated the exits of Roark, Ali, Jessica and Ashley, all of whom had a great chance of winning this season. She also made a F3 with Devon and Ryan that did her some good. In the pre-merge, she geniusly used Ben and Ryan as coverage. That being said, Ben was also the head honcho of the 7 Person alliance. However, that was the same alliance that targeted him in 4 consecutive votes. I have to give this one to Chrissy.
Social: This is the most underrated aspect. However, my definition of Survivor, is a social experiment. You need to make some real connections to help you get far in the game. It is absolutely essential. Now, this might be surprising, but, I'd actually give this section to Ryan. He had strong connections with Chrissy, Devon, Ali and Ben and Lauren to an extent. These got him into the F3. On the other hand, Ben literally put himself into the minority and Chrissy's social game was mediocre at best.
After taking these three aspects into consideration, I truly believe that Chrissy deserved to win this season. Had it not been for the NUMEROUS idols and F4 twist, Ben would have been gone. Chrissy had the most control this season and that is why she would have my vote in the finale

The theme of the season is based on the criteria by which the tribes were formed, so of course they swapped almost immediately.
The people that are upset about Ben's win are mostly the fans of OG Survivor - before it became inundated with too many twists and boiled down to a scavenger hunt for idols. It used to be about making sure you're not voted off by establishing a strong alliance, taking a target off your back and/or winning immunity. Ben failed to do that for tribal council after tribal council but still survived because of multiple idols + a last-minute (in viewers' and players' perspective, but planned by prods), first-time twist. Ben surviving 1 or 2 times would have been palatable but it just became too much.
Not saying Ben didn't deserve to win. You play the hand that you are dealt and he played his pretty well. The "big moves" argument is pretty new. Locking yourself into an airtight alliance that YOU control is as a big a move as you can make so I don't see that as a valid argument against Devon. People overlook the subtle day to day things, consistency and stability too much and are too easily blinded by the shiny new toy or the explosive "ben bomb". Sometimes, it's the moves that you DON'T make that just as important. That is what OG Survivor fans missed in this season, all the plotting and scheming was nullified by idols instead of being enhanced by it.
I felt like the season was trash just because of the twist. I really loved Ben pulling all those idols, and even though that stretch of three episodes were essentially the same thing with Ben constantly pulling idols I actually loved it, just the thrill of watching Ben constantly finding idols and knowing the "ben bomb" was about to drop every episode unbeknownst to the majority alliance felt great to me. My problem is that Ben had set up this persona that he would get himself to the end and he would outwork everyone to win, how when everyone was asleep he was literally out searching for idols, how he spent every second with his back to the wall fighting for his chance to win. However despite his incredible work ethic he ironically ended up winning because he got a favorable in game "twist". I just think that it felt really good to watch the odd man out constantly fight his way out of an impossible situation but it all was for nothing because at the last second the odd man out lost the fight for his life but got a free pass, it just feels a bit disingenuous
I liked the end twist only because I loved Ben, if Ben wasn’t still in I would have hated it
I loved the fire twist, it required the winner to have a more well-rounded game.
There should be an early/mid point in the game where there are no more twist and hidden idols.
I watch survivor because of the politics and strategy of voting people off. Not because I like seeing people find a bunch of idols. This season was less survivor and more Easter egg hunt on an island.

I would have liked this fire twist a lot more if they told them about it before the game started
John Johnson either that or if they banned idols being played at the final 5 to prevent someone from idoling themself to the end the way Ben did
I love the Healers tribe. How I wish they all made it in the merge + Ali too.
I wrote you a private msg but I don't know if you got this so I'll repeat it here - would you make a video to show to people who only got recently to Survivor that would prepare them for the next season? I'm talking about a video detailing all of the "mistakes" that were shown in the Ghost Island preview - Erik's immunity necklace, James' two idols, a f*cking stick etc. A video that would explain the context, the circumstances it happened in and the weight of that mistake. That would be a blessing for me as I want to prep my gf for the next season but we don't have time to watch all of those seasons and there are nearly none videos like that on youtube.

The final twist was a disaster, and really left a bad taste in my mouth. I feel like it ruined the rest of the season; indeed, I was worried it'd be a Pagonging.

I think if they eased up on the twists it would have been better
But I love this season this was one of my first seasons I have seen but I love this season
