7.3 Godzilla - The Dirthead Tow Pig
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- This week we go over my 2020 Ford F350 Dually. This truck is rad, Tows like a dream with the 7.3l Godzilla motor under the hood. Let's get the oil changed and head down south to Moab.
"Like everything I own, I wasn't able to leave it entirely stock." Dave has never been more relatable
Can’t leave nothing alone!
@@thedirtheadshed My wife will grumble about me customizing every vehicle, computer, and even tools that I own, and then I turn to her and say, "Why can't you just order what's on the menu without adding 15 special instructions?" That usually gets her - lol
I really like the truck. The 7.3 make sense without the expense of a diesel.
It’s a good one
Dang big block dually? Makes me feel like it’s the 90’s again. Thanks guys for the memory lane.
You aren’t lying
Basically the EPA built this truck. The diesels are way too expensive and complicated.
I appreciate that you, Dave, are a genuine dude. You do not come across as arrogant or judgmental, just a man that likes and knows a lot of stuff. I also appreciate that your rigs aren’t top-of-the-line fanciness; what is needed and down to earth. Thank you!
Thank you. I’m stoked that so many people seem to appreciate the same things as I do.
Love how it’s like a modern day version of the legendary 460! Big fan of this new 7.3 Godzilla and also a big fan of the ol’ big block 460
Same!
It really is a modern 460 I loved my 92 F250 with a 460. And my 7.3 takes me back to my 460 days.
More fabrication videos on any of your projects would be cool. You are great at explaining things and throwing in tips and tricks
Gotta get back on that. Been bogged down with other stuff lately
I like the old 460 reference to the 7.3 Godzilla as power wise which means Ford did it right for a change. Thank you Dave for your input on the 7.3 Godzilla that means a lot.
Go test drive one
The fact that you talk about the high cost of keeping up with the Jones’ and buy only what you need is very refreshing. Even though you’re a fabrication genius, mere mortals can relate to your life and choice. Thanks for the breath of fresh air
Thanks for watching!
I drive a lot. I stopped buying Diesels in 2019. I’ve worn out a one ton gas truck since then. The gas truck lasted just as long, 635 thousand miles, but it was so much cheaper to maintain and keep going.
That’s so true. That’s why most ambulance companies went back to gas too
635k?! Which truck / engine?
@@slaytanic921 2019 gmc 3500 6.0.
I got rid of it before it got to 650k. Now I have another 2018 Chevy 3500 6.0
I bought it with 55k and it has 175k miles now.
I have a 7.3 but mine burns diesel. I’m always impressed on how you keep all this going with kids and a family. I can barely afford to keep 1 jeep running. Keep it up for us little guys that are trying to balance everything
Those new gassers out tow our old 7.3 diesels by a wide margin. Unless you’ve fully built and modified yours.
@@kensporalsky3784 It's interesting to see what will happen to this truck after 20 years, considering that is the youngest 7.3 PSD you can get now, 2003. Mine's L99, beaten and abused by the previous owner, still works fine. Modern trucks are way ahead in terms of performance, but in terms of reliability, I'd go for an old diesel any day of the week or an older truck in general. I like when I can fix my truck myself.
@@dimitrid268 I like old diesels too, but the new ones are INSANELY complicated. If you like working on your trucks, you’d love the 7.3 Godzilla. There’s TONS of room under the hood, even with dual batteries and alternators. I’m ordering new plug wires and I can change them myself in no time. Can’t do simple work to a modern diesel.
@@cliffordmontana4562 Yea, I know that engine is not brand new and has been around for a while, pretty sure it's not bad, but it's the fuel consumption why I can't own one) My previous gas car 5.5 in a G class did 10 MPG in the city.
@@dimitrid268 My 7.3 with 4.30 gears and heavy 35x12.50 off-road tires gets about 13 in the winter, over 14 in summer, and about 16mpg on the highway at about 68mph. Not great but not terrible.
“If you’re a car guy everything becomes a project” this is the way.
True
Hey Dave I was the one who recommended the secret snowplow package leveling kit 😂. 👋
Much appreciated!
Hope to run into one day Dave!! I live in the same area as you. Love you your videos!!!
Thanks! I’m sure we will cross paths
Motortrend just isn't as good without Dirt every day. I'm glad you're on youtube. Love all the projects you've done so far. Can't wait to see what's next.
I appreciate the support!!
I have the same truck but not a dually. I tow a 12000lb trailer with it no problem. Love the godzilla
Good to hear!
When Dave says Diesel is too much trouble, I listen! You got that thing right before prices skyrocketed, so much less expensive in the USA, in Canada, even a base F350 gas fleet is a fortune, ludicrous money. I'd like to see the trailer fixup!
Timing was right! For sure
Ford hit the nail on the head with the 7.3 and so did you by getting one!
Thank you
Great video. Only Ford I would consider are these new 7.3 gassers.
Nice. I like some of the cars too
I went from a 2011 Ram with the 6.7 Cummins to a 2021 F350 XL with the 7.3 Godzilla engine with the snow plow package. I've been very happy with it. Like you I just went for the base model, low options, because I just use it to plow snow, tow my car trailer and bring my trash to the dump.
Same same!
Electronic will always break down. I have a 2016 Ram 2500. Did the same thing. Give me the basics and keep the fancy stuff. It is there to WORK.
Love my srw xl 350. 3900lbs payload out of a single wheel
Yep! Good choice
I bought the same trailer from carson a few years ago. Good trailer. Put stake sides on it and it gets used constantly.
I had made some scrap wood sides years ago. They got used a lot as well
Thanks for keeping it real, Dave, It's why we love you and what you do!
Thanks! I’m enjoying the UA-cam
Love it, a man can’t go wrong having a trailer and a reliable truck.
They can’t All be projects
I repainted two trailers this year, sand blasting, and new decks, and new tires new hinges and latches, and boxes and winches🙄. Fml
That’s a lot of thankless work
@@thedirtheadshed eh one was for my step dad, I'm sure he'll be thankful when spring gets here and he picks it up! Smart move with the sliders btw my steps on my SDs are always bent or not working in the power step version here in the snow.
Hitting the dell binger damnit 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks!!
Thanks for your post, you seem like a good person so I subscribed and liked your post. Good luck with your UA-cam.
Thanks for the support
Kids still talking about that? You can totally tell you do this for fun and are not concerned about making a lot of money off the channel. Totally appreciate the casual attitude!
Thank you. Glad you’re enjoying it
One of the best fabricators on UA-cam!
Thanks dude!
Huge fan of the videos showing small improvements to the tow rig setup. Half the time the trip and prep is just as enjoyable as the journey itself.
Exactly
Just found ya . Been watching you for year on dirt every day . Your the best fabricator ever!!!!
I don’t know about that. But thank you
I appreciate your trailer! Tow
rigs come and go, car trailers are forever!
So true
Thank you for keeping your brains and purchasing within your means!!!!!
Exactly! Ever thousand you add to the sticker is line fifteen hundred you have to pay back
Those sliders look great, nice upgrade!
Thank you
Great walk around on the trailer. Like everyone else at the time, ended up with a carson trailer. Mine is 16 years old with the original deck! I always thought this cheap trailer would be temporary for me, but has been far more reliable than any trailer I owned before. For a little angle iron trailer, it rock.
Couple upgrade I did that were totally worthwhile:
- added triangle corner gussets to the deck to keep the flex down. Straps stopped getting loose after that
- added morride shackles. Way beefier and stoped the spring slop
- added brakes to the back axle so I have 4 wheel brakes
And best of all: I added a 14k weight distribution hitch. Even with a solid 3/4 ton truck, that hitch makes braking much more stable, especially since I tow my crawler on tight mountain roads.
You’re dialed in!
. We restored our 18’ foot trailer rated 10k lb commercial grade. Added a front safety crash bar, Warn 8s winch, better quality wood deck, light boxes.
Our tow rig is a 2014 GMC Sierra 1/2 ton.
Sounds like a good setup
I was in line for the big 7.3 when they announced it in '20. Couldnt be happier. The performance in tow haul is second to none in the gas segment. Under certain situations MT the tranny doesnt perform ideally when in regular D mode. But its usually when the powertrain is cold. None of the headaches or cost of the diesel. Its a sensible choice
I dig it. The trans downshifting so far on down grades is hard to get used to
Thanks Dave. Love Dirthead Projects…… keep em coming!
Will do!
Trailer maintenance on the channel is a good idea.
I’ll post it up
Nothing better than when something fits the budget and does it’s job. 😊
Right!
Also purchased my car trail in 2005. Best thing ever!! It’s been everywhere.
Nice
I did the same thing! 2022 7.3 gas. Came from an ‘07 6.0 ford diesel and I have no regrets.
Nice . Good hearing other’s reaction.
This video made me realize my first actual vehicle was my brand new car trailer. I bought one BEFORE I bought my first vehicle as I knew it was easier to borrow a truck than a trailer. Stil got it, original deck, never - and I mean never, touched the wiring or replaced a light. Love my 7k Load Trail, it's extra wide, drive over fenders and never let me down going on 15+ years now...
Part of the family
I'm always shocked at how many people only go with 7K trailers. Given the trailer probably weighs in at 2500 lbs itself that doesn't leave much capacity for a crawler. Fine for the average car but only adequate for the smallest of crawlers or buggies. For example, my 18' tilt-deck with drive over fenders is 3000 lbs and my crawler is about 5500. That would put me way over a 7K trailer, hence the 5200 lb axles under it. I think a lot of people out there are running over-weight without even realizing it. Or maybe they think "7000 lbs" is the payload capacity of the trailer and forget to add the weight of the unit itself. Or you know, maybe they just don't think at all.....
Been a Dirt every Day fan for a while. Can't believe I hadn't found your channel till now. Glad I did.
Thanks for stopping by
Definitely video any pull truck and trailer mods, that stuff is so helpful (and sometimes not obvious).
Love the channel!
Will do. Thanks for watching
My next purchase is that truck and engine. Thanks for all the details. 🤘😎🤘
Right on! Tell ‘em Dave sent ya
Great video, awesome rundown of your pickup, trailer video would be awesome. Always like having these videos by you Dave. You're just like every practical dude out there and it's nice having a kindred spirit that we can enjoy your videos together.
Love the trailer
Thanks. It’s always got my back
Godzilla for the win.
It’s good
You build it. I’ll watch it. I learn something new in all your videos.
Right on. Will do
Used engine oil will help out the wood deck on the trailer
I would try it. But I end up working on there sometimes
Hell yeah, do the trailer up dirt head style.
I just need to fix broken stuff and make it look good again
I’m a Chevy guy 100% but when it comes down to Dually trucks I love them all, of course Chevy’s are my favorites but can’t hate in this one nor the RAM.
Everyone is making good stuff right now
When I reserved my base model bronco in 2020 and my 2021 order got bumped to a 2022 almost immediately I priced out getting another truck instead. I was was looking at a regular cab 4x4 F350, XL trim, 7.3 Godzilla, plow/camper packages for stiffer/taller springs. They weren't bad, MSRP was mid 40's at the time. I ended up sticking with my base model bronco that I was able to get out the door for like $32k. No regrets with the bronco, most fun vehicle I've ever owned. I still plan to find a 7.3 Godzilla f350 someday for my tow pig when I get to where I need one, most likely pre-owned though.
I was surprised at how much truck you get for the money
I ordered a ‘95 460 F-350 CC Dually. I miss that ol’ girl…
That was probably a great rig
Sign me up for future episodes of the Shed "Customizing The Hauler"... Oh and: great dually, man! I have over 3/4-million miles on my persponal Ford F-Series in my life (between 3 trucks) with maintenance and consumables (maybe a couple alternators) the only expenses. Love 'Em!
Right on. I’ll keep making videos
Anything entry level, every now and again is great. Always good to see how someone else does "simple" projects. Safe travels.
Thanks. Got to keep it real. Not a fan of debt
I also bought my trailer in 2005, had it custom built as wide as possible, 18ft deck and I added the beaver tail and tail light boxes at home.
Nice work
Nice. That thing gets better gas milage than my 22 tundra.
Tundras love the fuel
Random comment for support 🤘
Thanks dude
yeah keep us updated on any fab project. id love to see any of it.
I’ll keep posting up. It’s my job now
I have the Ram version of your truck and it has been perfect for my needs.
Nice! The tradesman is always a good choice
Hell yeah, trailer mods for sure.
Lots of interest in trailer videos i guess
I have a 21 Stx 7.3 f350 srw, installed the 58 gallons transferflow midship replacement and it's a killer tow rig
Nice! It’s cool hearing how many are out there now
Cool truck dave
Thank you
Love my 2022 f250 xlt crewcab 4wd 7.3 Godzilla went from a 2013 true cab chassis 6.7 with failed me at 100,000 miles cp4 pump
After owning this 7.3 gas ill never forget back to diesel and yes fuel mileage 👍👍👍great videos ran across yours and Subscribed
Much appreciated. Thanks for watching
Just stumbled upon this channel. Very happy, I literally subscribed during the intro trailer.
Right on. Thank you
Hell ya make that trailer fresh again. Love to watch you work.
It would be so happy
Very nice truck Sir, the way you go about buying a truck is the only way to buy a truck. Little tech as possible is great 👍
I’m stoked so many people agree
I really liked this episode. The tow rig is really nice for what you wanted. I agree w/ less tech, and I say that as a tech guy for a couple/few decades. Fun to watch your builds and progress through things. Love the, “You can do this at home.” approach. Cheers!
Much appreciated. Thanks for following along
Lets see a swingarm axle and air bag setup on that trailer lol. For haulin the low riders.
I always see those. Seem gimmicky
I'm excited to see the trailer rebuild video (s). I love watching you fabricate and repair stuff the fabricstion is always like art
Lots of interest in trailer videos!
Very well explained
Thank you
Looking forward to trailer video!
Man. I’m gonna have to get that in the shop this summer
Yes finally a new installment Cheers Dave
Trying to crank them out
I bought my car hauler new when I was 19. 16 years later it needs some love. Do a video on trailer maintenance give me some motivation to fix mine up.
Cheaper to keep them!
Always look forward to your posts
Much appreciated
My favorite part of the truck are the roof lights on the cab.
I like them too
I have a Godzilla in a F350 Tremor SRW and wondered about the capabilities of a dually with the same. Great to see! Good for you to step out of the box without the troubles of the diesels.
I think it’s gonna be a good choice for a long time
I always wondered why you got a gasser F350. But it totally makes sense. I like your thinking! Rock on!
Thanks! I dig it
Thanks for sharing. Have a blast at Moab.
Just got here! Thanks
Great comments on the truck. I’m happy with the 7.3 as well and I think about the easiest truck to change the oil on Ive ever owned. As a warning to those that go F250. The rear springs are less than stellar. I’ll be putting bags on mine soon. Have a safe trip!
That is so true. Oil changes are easy and cheap
I have a F250 with the 7.3 and the same options as yours. Even got the same basic trailer as yours.
Nice. Hope you’re digging the Ford
A trailer refresh would be great content!
Gives me a reason to make it priority
Awesome truck. Take care of it and you'll have it for a long time. Great video.
Thank you. That is the plan
super cool truck
Thanks, I dig it
Those rock sliders are awesome.
Thank you
A trailer upgrade would be cool
I’ll work on it. But I don’t plan on selling and upgrading
Would really like to see the trailer upgrades as a video!👍👍
Noted!
Enjoying your vids, nice pace and relatable
Thanks for watching!
Great video! I am right there with you. I also just purchased a gas XL F-250. I didn’t want all the modern electronics to go wrong. I agree with the diesel comments. Modern diesels are just much to expensive to gamble on. I enjoy you going depth on it none the less. More people outta think through truck purchases with this kind of logic
Thank you
Awesome setup! These base model modern trucks are more well equipped than anything I grew up with. I have an F-150 XL 5.0 Sport package which is similar, and I love it. Just enough creature comforts to make trips nice and without the worry that down the road it wont nickel and dime you with all the fancy breaks or wears out.
Exactly! That’s why I don’t understand getting the higher trims unless you’re truly rich. My “base” 2022 crew cab long bed 4x4 with Godzilla and 4.30 gears was $56,000, and with Ford Aplan it was $49,000. It has 8” screen with apple car play, bed lights, man step, bed liner, siriusxm, remote start, dual batteries and alternators, running boards, tinted windows, vinyl seats, vinyl floors. What more could you need? I don’t want massaging seats. Lol.
So true
Yeah give that trailer some love!
It could use it
Looking forward to the next video. Nice work.
Thanks. Trying to piece one together now
Amp research step for the rear bumper is worth it’s weight in gold on these trucks
I forgot about that little kick down one. I do need that
I would love to see a video on trailer updates and such. Especially some ideas on tail light protection. They seem to be just a consumable product on trailers.
Looks like your snow melt is about the same as we have here, just an hour or so Northeast of you. Welcome to the neighborhood.
Thanks. I need to get up there on some trails
Great video! You are very relatable and your explanations are both funny and informative. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching
100% agree! My car hauler was the best purchase I have ever made!
I’m stoked I bought mine way back when
A very wise man, you did place your needs as priority rather than wants and luxury.
If every vehicle buyer would consider first their needs rather than wants and luxurious items to impress or compete with their neighbors, buyers would save themselves tons of financial burdens.
Debt is BS
Tabs are expired. I wish Washington did permanent trailer tabs. Buying tabs for a simple car trailer every year is so dumb to me. South Sound checking in. Love the videos. You're a natural at talking to a camera now.
Thanks man. I did throw the new sticker on there yesterday
Would love to see you rehab the trailer!
I’ll dig into it. Probably over a winter when it’s not getting used
