    We take the 2023 F350 7.3 gas with 3.73 gears for a ride with my orange line 17500 gvwr equipment trailer and Kubota kx057-5. The combination should weigh about 17k and its on a conventional hitch. The new truck handled it well. We compare it to my past truck, a 2019 F250 6.7 powerstroke with 3.55 gears

    If you use a weight distribution hitch it will put the weight back on the front axle and level the squat out. I pull a 36 foot travel trailer and it’s night and day difference between towing with or without a weight distribution hitch. The other thing it helps with tremendously is with sway control.

      I have never felt that before but my dump trailer and the big mini are a new addition. Iv been towing 10-12k since i could drive. Heck i was backing those trailers into my dads shop and around the parking lot as soon as i could reach peddles. But a fully loaded dump trailer and the mini back there are some serious weights and you do feel it. I had my 6.7 for almost 5 years so that trucks mannerisms are very much locked in my memory. It never reared, or fronted up like that.
      I was just recovering some deer from some moist ground tonight, it was nice having the lighter weight of the gas engine up front. So there is a trade off for everything. I know the 6.7 would have had dug a bit more where i floated over the top layer tonight. There is a pro and a con to everything, thats why we have options. I just trying and articulate what those options are and what they are best at. My viewers seam to like that

    I have a '22 F350 with the 7.3L and 4.30 axle to tow our 14k GVWR 5th wheel camper. It is a very good combo, and I live in NH with hills. I will say, probably the reason you did not have the overloads engage with your trailer is because it is a bumper pull. My camper will just engage the overload springs when hooked up, so if you had a goose-neck trailer to pull you equipment with you will most likely engage them then. Also I don't experience the loose drive axle you did, probably again because of the weight distribution on the truck with the bumper pull. But overall, yes a fun truck to drive either will a heavy trailer or without. 😀

      Im pretty handy with a gas engine. Modern diesels ill happily send to a pro with proper diagnostic scanners. So i decided my daily as a 7.3 was a good fit. Older diesels im good with. The mass of electronics on like a new 6.7 require a very expensive scan tool for proper diagnostics and i dont own one. The cost to keep them up to date is crazy too. So my theory is bring he modern diesel to a diesel mechanic and im mot afraid at all to replace the 7.3 myself some down the road if need be.
      I really like the 7.3 it really is impressive but the 450 will be so much more stable. I ordered a 24 f450 with a HO, just a XL model. Total work truck, rubber floors and cloth seats.

    Very cool! -- QUESTION -- Just a question about CDL.. I don't have one but want to tow a 57-5 (like yours) from one of our properties to another. This is NONE commercial. Do I need a CDL for that if it is not commercial? How does it work in Michigan as best as you can tell?

    • @ChrisGahn
      @ChrisGahn 3 місяці тому +2

      @Coleen_West I've done a lot of research on this so I'll try to answer your question. Find the published GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) for your truck, and for your trailer. Add those two numbers together. If the total of those two numbers is above 26,000lbs, you need a CDL to even hook the trailer up to your truck, even if you aren't towing any cargo at all. I know that sounds ridiculous, but that is how it works. You could have a total weight of 12,000lbs with your truck and the trailer you're pulling, and you would be in violation of the law if the GVWR of the trailer pushes the combination above 26,000lbs. This is why some people choose to "de-rate" their trailer GVWR on paper if they don't need to actually tow that much weight.
      Separately, if the actual combined weight of your truck and trailer + cargo is above 26,000lbs, you need a CDL regardless of what the GVWR values are for the two vehicles. You also could be in violation of the law if you are exceeding the GVWR for either the truck or the trailer.
      Commercial vs. personal purpose has no bearing on whether you need a CDL for your load or not.
      I hope that makes sense. Let's plug in some numbers for your situation:
      Let's say your truck weighs 7800lbs and has a GVWR of 11500lbs. Let's say your trailer has a GVWR of 14,000lbs. The total GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) here would be 25,500lbs. That's under 26,000lbs so you would not need a CDL to hook that truck to that trailer, and tow up to the maximum cargo weight on that trailer.
      Now let's say you get a bigger trailer with a GVWR of 16,000lbs. The moment you hook that trailer up to your truck (even if the trailer is totally empty), you are required by law to have a CDL to operate that vehicle combination.

      No tuning, just a monitor and if ill be honest it isnt giving me much info. I need to call banks and find out if they have a new update to get data from this ecu.

      Thank you for your comment thanks for watching.
      Considering this engine runs on regular its spectacular on the stock tune. The trans tune is good, honestly its very logical as is. But performance wise a trans tune would be nice to carry gears longer sporty feel. That wouldnt help fuel economy though. I like that it short shifts and uses the torque

    Add some AIr Lift air bags, they will stabilize the truck even more and reduce the trailer tounge from pushing the back of the truck down when you hit the brakes, they made a huge difference on my truck when towing. Before, when I was on bumpy faster pace hwy (65-70 mph) going through a construction area hauling a tractor , my truck would try to bounce a little, which can make the sterring feel loose at times, and after installing the air bags, it totally stabilized the truck and trailer, I highly recommend this.

    • @greatlakespowerstrokefx4
      @greatlakespowerstrokefx4  8 місяців тому +1

      Agree completely, it would help with the nose coming up when on the brakes.
      My point is im towing entirely within the trucks rating, and with good equipment. The truck shouldnt need that upgrade. The overload spring stops should just be in the right place to actually do something.
      If i was going to have only this truck for my tow rig i absolutely would do that or timbrens again. This truck is filling in as the tow rig until my 450 shows up, then it will just be my daily and all around truck for camping and hunting and travel and whatever.
      I would say those buying. F350 single wheel with a 6.7 or 6.7 HO the should know this is a problem that they should know about before buying it as their tow rig.

      @@jeepingcolorado when traversing uneven ground you do want an uneven hitch. I just dont use them. We tried that years ago with sailboat trailers. There was never a benefit just an annoyance. Very little weight is actually put to the front and the rigid hitch causing handing issues on uneven ground. It will get stuck easily off road too because the rear isnt allowed to drop.
      Its just not something im going to bother with.
      The real issue here is the overload springs basically arent used because the overload rests are mounted too high to engage that spring.
      I dont really use air bags because usually they are a bear in the winter and tend to have air leaks. Id rather increase the spring rate of the real spring or run a timbren.

      You wont find a truck capable to tow 17500 lbs that has a small enough gvwr.
      You could get away with a 17 footer with 2 8k axles at 16k gvwr that leaves 10k for the trucks gvwr though im not sure you are going to find a 10k gvwr pickup rated for 16k but you might. I think my last f250 which was 10k rated had a 15800 lbs rated capacity. Could get one derated to 15800 gvwr.

      I have a 16x7 enclosed trailer tall enough for a side by side that we hunt out of and camp out of. Its light but it has alot of windage. Iv towed that about 1300 miles now and i struggle to get 10.8.
      Its really more about wind on flat land. The excavator and heavy trailer actually tows better than that enclosed trailer

      Depends on the speed. Where i live its 55 everywhere so i get 15.4-16.8 depending on how often in slowing down and i idle at all.
      But freeway speeds 65 empty about 14.7-15.4. 70 is about mid 14’s and 70 low 14’s. 75 it dips to 13.8 ish but that depends too. I can still maintain 14 at 75 if i do very little stopping with no wind or hills and if i can maintain a constant speed. No passing

    The leaf springs are different. They look the same, however, the spring rates are higher in the F350 than the F250. It’s more about physics and handling and you don’t feel it in daily driving. The overloads are also different. Steel doesn’t have to be or look different. It’s about how the steel is formed and shaped. You even mentioned the squat with your setup! 17k is close to max on the f250.

    • @greatlakespowerstrokefx4
      @greatlakespowerstrokefx4  7 місяців тому

      This is a 350 and it does squat a good bit because the overloads dont hit until its squatted big time. I havent seen the part numbers between the leafs but historically a single rear 350 and 250 have the same leaf pack besides the over load. Just as the drw 350 and 450 are said to have the same leaf pack. Its the running gear that differentiates them. Wheels tires brakes and axles.

      @@greatlakespowerstrokefx4Ive actually went and looked at f250 vs f350 leaf packs. F250 tremor uses f350 srw leaf packs. They are absolutely completely different my man. Compare a f250 crew cab short bed vs a f350 crew cab short bed both same engine, the payload capacity is over a 1000 pound difference. That's in 2020-2022 trucks. Now I seen a 2024 f350 crew short bed 7.3 on auto trader either 3.73 or 4.30 which doesn't effect payload but either way, payload sticker showed 4014 pounds. That's very impressive for a short bed srw 7.3 AND it was a fully loaded lariat as well not a base model with limited options. I really don't ever talk to guys having issues with an overload spring. However those guys are towing goosenecks that transfer the weight better than a bumper pull. Also if your trailer was a feet longer and you were to position that mini excavators rear right on the axles I bet it wouldn't squat as much. Most people, not saying this situation, try to get as much weight close to the tongue which is dumb. Your mini excavator is sitting right where you need it however a longer trailer would be ideal, or a gooseneck trailer. Idk if you have 5th wheel prep, but 17k on a gooseneck will be less squat than bumper pulling

    For future reference you aren’t good to go w 2 chains, equipment over 10k is required to have 4 points of contact and they can’t be combined,if one fails the other 3 need to secure it. And 2 of the chains need to have a combination rating equal to or greater than the total weight of the machine. That’s a lot of weight for a bumper pull single wheel, you did a good job setting it up and balancing it. I feel like my f350 srw s overloads are too high as well. I swear my old trucks f150 maxtow 3.5s pull better than my F350 super duty not just with power ,no contest there the 6.2 is no match for the 3.5 but in stability as well. The 150s will pull anything more planted than my f350.

      Dont disagree at all. Im not going over the road with it. Local only. By local i mean farm country lol. More or less its a connivence thing. When it goes up to my friends cabin this summer for land clearing its going to be over chained. I do believe you are right on 4 points of contact and each have to be separate chains. When my drive is 4-15 minutes long, two chains is very fast. And the risk of myself making a mistake is zero. Im very careful, defensive. But i do appreciate the heads up. I do also strap the boom to abide by that requirement.
      Thank you for your comment and thanks for watching.
      I think everyone is saying their trucks were built with too high of overload pads. Many posts on facebook groups mention the massive amount of squat required to contact them. They are just about pointless.

      Like how to build the best 90’s gas tow rig. Or the best 2000’s gas tow rig. Or the best hunting truck.
      Mod out the trucks for the specific task and send them to a channel subscriber.
      If we could get to a point where the channel could support doing it without people buying like merch or raffle tickets or something that would be awesome. Make the channel support enthusiast’s.
      It would be cool to do mod packages raffled too so more people can win. So like someone could win and their own truck would be modified to the persons specs on the channel and dynoed and then they just have their own modified vehicle.
      That would be sweet too.

      Also the aisin is a pretty clunky trans that needs alot of torque controls to keep it from slipping. So the cummins which is a remarkable engine is pretty neutered. The HO cummins feels pretty sluggish compared to a new L5P or powerstroke. You are paying like 12500 bucks for the HO and it really isnt quick or particularly impressive.
      More over the 68rfe is pretty weak, the truck is slow because of the torque controls.
      So all around i cant really say the current cummins offering is too exciting for me. They would need a manual trans option or a whole lot better automatic for it to be a sale for me. Id for sure buy a 2024 duramax over a cummins, and like i said, this from a guy who loves the cummins engine.
