Paradise Lagoon is a gem, yep as long as people enjoy with destroying it with garbage. It's been a long time since I've been to Wolf Lake, so cool to see it again, and the rest of the route. Oh man, I've have forgotten so much crap over the years, way to adapt and rock out a solo adventure. Beautiful trip.
At last! Someone nearer my age doing this stuff! Yesssss! Those other 30yo guys make me feel old!!! So glad i found you, i will be binge watching. Such a beautiful country, and you have so much love and respect for Nature... right up my street (or river). Looking forward to travelling with you, albeit on youtube, which is as near as im likely to get. Respect to you from me in 🇬🇧p.s. just realised that you're a musician too...same! We're definitely friends now!😅🎵
Haha Those 30yo's have the market cornered, but we 40-somethings still have some spunk 😉 Fellow musician! Welcome to the channel - hoping you enjoy what we do out in the Northern Ontario of Canada wilderness. Welcome aboard, new friend!
I really enjoyed this video of yours and what I like most about tripping videos is when some history about the location is given and love when someone exposes how they are feeling and how the trip may be helping . Being honest like this and being vulnerable makes it even more interesting and relatable . The fact you also gave up the larger site for the group says a lot about your character. Thanks for sharing the trip .
Thanks so much for the thoughtful and kind comment, Cliff. So glad that you enjoyed watching - I really enjoyed the trip and hope that comes through in the video :)
Great, great video. First of all, the music was excellent and I only discovered in your last video that you do your own music, very impressive. Too bad about the partiers on the island but you have a great sense of humour which I'm sure must have helped. I'm also impressed with your paddling and portaging skills especially on the white water and on those steep hills respectively. Finally, awesome job capturing the beauty of the places you visited and delivering really positive messages about camping etiquette and environmental stewardship. Well done and I can't wait for your Heaven's Gate video. 👍👍
Thanks a bunch for such kind words, Daryl 🙏 The sense of humour comes in handy in any adverse situation, though the noisy campsite was a tough one lol We very much appreciate the kind words and the support. Heaven's Gate is the next one we're working on - it's a doozie of a trek!
Thanks so much for sharing this trip! Hoping to do Temagami soon. I loved the music throughout, had to wipe tears a few times! Thanks again :) Hope the general malaise / anxiety was gone for awhile after this - cheers.
Thank you so much for the very thoughtful comment and watching the adventure! That feeling is gone and hasn't returned...but we've done a few trips since, so it helps keep the proverbial wolves at bay 😉 I hope they were tears of joy for the lovely world we are a part of. Thanks again!
The worst item that I have forgotten was a sleeping bag. Wrapped myself in an emergency blanket. Worked OK for me. BTW, I cannot recall the last time I had a tailwind when paddling. Love the scenery on your trip. Thanks for taking the time to film.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting, Gary! Missing sleeping bag is pretty bad, for sure...depending on the season, of course! In summer, maybe not so bad. I edited it out of the video, but one time doing the Bark Lake loop a few years back, we forgot our paddles at home and had to buy some in Espanola (ssshhhhh....don't tell anyone!) 🥸
Thanks so much! It's such a privilege to access these wild places, so we try to be mindful of others having a different way to appreciate the outdoors, even when it differs from our ways :) Thanks so much for the comment!
Amazing job job documenting this beautiful area - hard ti watch this when you have to went months to get back into Temagami backcountry - I’m planning gamble lake around lady Evelyn , Diamond and then down to emerald lake in 15 days. Gotta love Temagami winds and those instables💪🏽🛶.
Thanks so much, Curtis! We typically spend our winters editing our summer/fall trips from the previous year, so the heartache of the long winter isn't quite as bad 😉 It's the next best thing to being there! Good luck on that trip - it sounds like a doozy! Would love to have 2 weeks to hit the forest....
Thank you for the image of King's memorial. I knew him personally. A great man missed by many. Psst, there exists a portage between the North end of Kukagami and Donald lake. I've never seen a mention of it in any Chiniguchi video.
Oh, super neat that you knew him! We thought it was an interesting little tribute with the best view on the lake (at sunset especially). That portage to Kukagami was actually where we were headed before we were rained out on our lazy day! Thanks for watching and commenting, Steve!
That was an amazing trip. I totally understand about trying to find answers in the backcountry on solo trips. This past summer for my 50th, I think I was looking for more than what nature could answer after planning a long 12 day trip and (spoiler alert) cut it short after 7 days. A minor injury and weather closing in made my decision a bit easier but I was still frustrated in the end. I definitely need to slow down more on trips and quit rushing through to get to a certain destination. Cause one thing Temagami backcountry has taught me; I'm really not superman and can't do everything that looks easy on a map. Lately, I've been itching to get out canoeing once more but winds have been brutal lately but I think it'll still happen before ice up. Planning some hot tent camping this November and into the winter. With both work and personal life issues this past month, I definately feel like I need more nature therapy lately.
Thanks so much, Darren! I know you're up in the opposite end of Temagami, but the whole place is magical. You're so right about slowing down...it's not something that I (Jay) do very well, but Sheri is better with taking it at a proper pace to enjoy the journey. I'm learning. Looking forward to your next adventure! We can't bring ourselves to hot tent, as we spend most of the winter travelling to our little shack in the bush - coziest place on earth in the winter 🥰
When I was watching the premier I forgot to mention that I always keep an emergency mylar blanket in my first aid kit which doubles as a ground sheet if I forget to bring one Great video, makes me want to head back up to Temagami next year, I didn't get to go there this year!!
Thanks, Derek! We almost always have our first aid kit, but on this one I (Jay) forgot it 🙃 Packing after playing a show at 2am is a likely excuse, but I managed. I appreciate you checking out the premiere and for your tip! I hope you get a chance to get back up to Temagami...it's magical.
Thanks a bunch, Mike! Glad you enjoyed it :) We both have a deep love and respect for the natural world and are strengthening that with each foray into the bush!
Thanks for this video! This is a route I have thought about and planned for a few years now! I feel the biggest draw back for me would be the unrestricted camping around the grotto. However, I do prefer tripping in the fall so may limit the numbers of people I would see. Once again, great video!
Oh, I hope you get the chance to do the trip! Being from Algoma, we're not used to the bigger crowds and full campsites - but we spent a great weekend on Wolf and Chiniguchi a few years ago in late September. The weather was gorgeous, so it was still crowded...but the views are so worth it. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
@@beautyofthebackcountry Love the Algoma region, wish I could move there!. Other week I did a short 2 night trip in Algonquin with a guy I have not seen since high school. I am the one in the Novacraft. He posted a video: ua-cam.com/video/eYJkrLUhkA0/v-deo.html
@@davidcook7008 Super! We canoed a part of Algonquin for the first time earlier this fall - just as colours were changing. We'll check out Canoeshadow's video 😀
Really enjoyed this one! Especially the music at 29:16. Was that you Jay? If so, you definitely don't have to worry about imposter syndrome with respect to your singing! You do, however, remain a tent imposter with only your fly :p. Great that you were spared rain and that you made do with what you had. I had a similarly baking trip on one of my Temagami trips and I also had no appetite. It is hard to be hungry when it is sweltering. I stayed at the same site on Donald. How did you enjoy the red ant infestation? It was pretty bad the second time I stayed there. I saw that you are reading Bruce's book... I just saw him live a few months back at Massey Hall. He was amazing. Congrats on accomplishing (and filming) this challenging trip! Please consider adding more of your vocals to future videos! Cheers, Trevor.
Thanks a million, Trevor - you're too kind. Yep that song is actually from my most recent solo album - released it in 2020, so for reasons unnecessary to mention, I wasn't able to tour it and promote it haha. I typically prefer to not force folks to listen to my singing voice after enduring my yammering for the remainder of the video, but I appreciate the encouragement. I got so lucky with weather that I didn't see rain until the last 2 days - so grateful for that, especially because my tarp was my groundsheet 😂 I was pretty amazed at the amount and spread of the ants! A few people have noted that to me, but the site is amazing if you can keep them off of you. I only had a few bites here and there. Thanks again for watching, Trevor!
Truly, it was our pleasure to share. Temagami is such a gem of wilderness that we can't wait to return at the next opportunity! Thanks for watching and for the sweet comment!
Very nice trip and great filming. Love the drone shots and the sharing of your thoughts. Maskinonge lake is one to avoid in my book. Typical junked up campsites when ever there is easy access, I'm not one who cares for lakes with dams to raise water levels either. Love Wolf to Chiniguchi Lakes, just wonderful!
Thanks, Donald! I agree regarding Maskinonge, but it's such a lovely lake and deserves to be paddled, even if you have to dodge some pontoon boats. I knew there would be plenty of motorboats, but the raging kegger on the tiny island next to me was a wild card I couldn't have planned for lol The whole area is complete magic, when human disregard is taken out of the equation. Thanks for tuning in!🙏
@@beautyofthebackcountry Yep, sometimes other peoples activities can interfear with a place or time. When that happens I just move on and continue enjoying where I am and try to keep some distance from the busy places. That's usually not hard for me cause I only go out in early spring and very late fall. I'm not out in the summer.
Awesome video... one question... why do people do that long portage from the Kelly Farm to Muskillonge Lake and not paddle Kelly Lake all the way down to Gomagawong Lake then portage to Gawasi/Green lake to Muskilonge? Would be easier lol.
haha great question! For me (Jay) it's because I don't mind long portages and find them better than the in-and-out of the puddle jumps. Both Sheri and I actually enjoy a nice walk through the forest, so don't shy away from a long portage. I can't speak for others on that point, but for us that's why. Thanks so much for checking out the video and for the comment! 🙏
@beautyofthebackcountry awesome. Loved your video. We have a family owned camp at Glen Afton called Cowboy LaBelle on the Sturgeon River. Love it there. Aldo I never been in the back country much I will one day... but we do enjoy the area around camp... Chinigouchi river... Sturgeon River... lakes around it too. On this trip? The toughest was likely the one between Button and Dougherty - or perhaps Kelly's Portage, simply due to the 3.5km hilly distance. But all-time, would have to be Diablo portage between Diablo Lake and Santoy Lake in NW Ontario. What is your most challenging portage??
