Mississagi River - 8 days - 320km On Our Favourite Wild River - In Grey Owl's Footsteps

- The Mississagi River. A mighty watercourse winding its way from the wild forests of the North, almost 300km through mountainous terrain, serene wetlands, crashing rapids, thunderous falls and wide, bay-filled lakes - finally terminating at her delta on Lake Huron. We loved this river before this journey, and love it even more after having travelled every kilometre of her course.
.
Guided along the way by the words of Archie Belany (A.K.A. Grey Owl) who also had a deep reverence for this river and the region as a whole, we learn the intricacies of the river by tracing the path once travelled long ago by countless travellers, rivermen, explorers, trappers, and millennia of indigenous inhabitants of this region. The sense of historical significance is palpable in many places.
.
The river takes on myriad different characters along her path; from a timid stream to a raging waterfall - from a lazy, winding marshland to a 20km almost continuous set of boiling rapids. This river has everything! The high waters of early-mid May helped us move swiftly through the twists and turns of this river, even making some normally runnable rapids too high for us to safely navigate.
.
If you love something, you'll protect it. We need to protect as much of this wilderness as we can, while we can, and in whatever ways we each can.
.

Been hanging out on that river for thirty years now. Never gets old or boring. Just love it.
Couldn't agree more!
Thanks so much for sharing the journey! Makes me want to get out there again.
Well, Travis, you should get out there again, then! Thanks so much for watching and for the comment. It's much appreciated, and we're thankful to share our adventures with people of like mind!
I love and prefer hanging out in a nice cozy tent with no schedule or time commitments .
Couldn't agree more - but sometimes our timelines force us out of our tents for long days of travel, just in order to complete the trip in our available time. We also do like to physically challenge ourselves with tough work - makes the relaxation at camp that much more enjoyable!
Oh wow you two! I need to watch this on the big screen. Will do that later 100%. Thanks for sharing! Will watch after work ❤✌️🇨🇦
Thanks, Loretta!! We so enjoyed the trip - we hope you enjoy the video!
Ah! My partner and I are headed to Biscotasing in a couple of weeks to do the stretch to Aubrey Falls, thanks for this, I'll save it to watch with her later!
Good luck! We skipped the paddle from Bisco to save a day or two (started at Spanish Lake), but we know it's a lovely area and the fishing is fabulous. Have a great trip, and let us know how you fare after the trip!
1 of the best, by 2 of the best. Great job guys.
👍👍
Aww - thank you so much for watching! With the scenery and pristine surroundings, it's easy to love the river
Tales of an Empty Cabin was a transformative book for me! Love this video guys!
We just found it and it is a seminal work, for sure. Having travelled the river in its entirety, the reasons for his reverence of the river are self-evident. Thanks for watching, Ken!
Great start to the vid! I can't wait to watch the rest!
Thanks, Kevin! The river is truly magical 🥰
Really enjoyed watching this one beautiful scenery
It is truly a gorgeous region and mostly untouched. Thanks for watching!
Really enjoyed this. Looked like a trip to remember. Thank you bringing us along for the adventure. Truly inspiring.
It's our favourite trip to date - thanks so much for checking it out! Looking forward to joining your team on a trip one day!
@@beautyofthebackcountry that would be awesome! Can’t wait for that.
Going to be up for a while tonight to watch this one.
haha You can watch it in stages - don't tire yourself out 😉Thanks for watching!
Excellent trip! Fabulous meals! Great variety of footage. Enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching! We're really not good at showcasing our food lol but we're trying to improve. The river has so much to offer, the footage rarely does justice.
Truly amazing, so well done and thanks for sharing some of our amazing country…
Thanks so much, Jim! It's lovely country, to be sure 😃
Always love that you share the beauty of our area…❤
Thanks, Teresa
Awesome video! Hard Work on your part! We get the rewards 😊 Thank you
Hard work is often a reward on its own, but in this case it brought us to some of the most beautiful spots in the world! Thanks for watching 😁
Such a beautiful part of the world - thank you for sharing it. 😀 Happy to have found your channel!
It's such lovely and serene country, to be sure. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
Great video guys! I enjoyed seeing the section below the falls - which was new to me. Your misty morning shots were out of a dream. Great that you had some decent weather as compared to The Steel trip. Rocky Island Lake (reservoir) is one big body of water. Glad that you had ideal conditions to cross. Like your trip, we had rain on ours - also only during non paddling hours. We had one daytime thunderstorm encircle us while paddling across Rocky Island with rain on all sides - but not a drop touched us. It was surreal. Glad to see Grey Owl's cabin is still standing. A great trip to kick off the season! Well done! Cheers, T.
Thanks so much! We highly recommend the section below the falls - several kms of almost constant rapids are super fun to run, and with little consequence. We sure had some gorgeous mornings - that's the benefit of rain overnight! We were pretty happy to be able to cross Rocky Island and Aubrey Lakes with basically perfect weather...we really lucked out there. Crazy to have thunderstorms all around without getting soaked - that must have been amazing! Did you video that trip? Would love to check it out if so!
@@beautyofthebackcountry I may have to return to try the lower Miss. one day. Sadly, my trip down the Miss was back in my stills days before switching to video. Looking forward to your next one! Cheers. T.
@@iCanoe_ Then you will surely have to journey the lower Mississagi and document it on film! Thanks again for checking it out!
This is one of the best rivers in the north!!
100% agreed - we think it's underrated. Especially the portion below Aubrey Falls! Thanks for watching!
@@beautyofthebackcountry fished camped all along that river ..beautiful
Loved your video! Looked like an awesome trip! Thank you!
Thanks for watching! It's an amazing trip that should be considered for any canoeist!
Nicely done. About half way through with some Thai food and a bottle of wine :) Love the long format stuff.
Cheers, friend! Thanks for checking it out. Glad to see you're back from the Torngats safely and still into watching outdoor content ;)
Fantastic film work!!!
Thanks, Tim! It's really easy to capture beauty in such lovely surroundings
Beautiful video, great job.
Thanks, Tosh! Looking forward to hitting some whitewater with you in the near future
Cool to see your connection to this river, makes for an amazing adventure (Headwaters to Huron). Beautiful paddle guys! Cool to know about the young poplar sunscreen..I'll have to try that in a pinch.
Thanks, Mattias! We have been talking of this trip for years, so it was so great for us to get the opportunity to do the trip. It's a special river!
Always enjoy your soundtracks for your videos. Well done.
Some very nice harmonic guitar noodling at peak tube saturation makes for lovely tones.
Thanks, Walt! We appreciate you checking it out 😀
@@arumrunner Well said - thanks for watching!
Can’t wait
Thanks for watching, Jim!
Great video. Baptism by fire for your first trip of the year. The portages are the only thing I find a deterrent. I wouldn’t tackle Diablo portage, if that is the same yikes. Great work. 🙏👍👍
Jay may have been a bit overestimating the difficulty of that one portage on Upper Bark Lake, but it's definitely challenging! We certainly like to overcome challenges on trips :) Thanks for watching!
Great video. Loved it.
Thanks so much!
Wow, you guys are the real real! We watched it start to finish and are really grateful to you both for documenting your trip so well. Ironically, my wife and I are hoping to do the section starting at the highway bridge down to Pigpen Chutes. The timing of your video couldn't have been better! I was wondering if you had any suggestions as to where we could leave our two vehicles? Also, if you have any suggestions for campsites along that stretch. We're thinking of a three-day, two-night trip. We're not sure how plentiful the campsite prospects are. We're flexible on the put in and takeout points if you have a better option. If you can help, that would be great, if you can't, that's okay too, we really appreciated your video. Cheers.
Thanks so much for the kind words - we really appreciate it! That stretch between Aubrey and Pigpen is one that we do annually. It's portage-free and full of fun rapids, but with few consequential ones. If you bring 2 vehicles, the one at Pigpen goes right on the side of the highway - there's a little parking area right there. For the other, we just park off to the side of the highway right at the bridge. Unless there's construction occurring, that's a safe bet. If not, there is a little road just down from the river crossing that leads to a launch upriver with lots of parking (east side of the river). Happy to send some pins on maps to you if you send an email! There is only one marked site along that route that we know of - you will see it as our lunch stop on day 6. Gorgeous, but small island site. There are others, though - happy to help!
Thanks
Thank you for watching!
I don't use bug spray either and I work in forestry. I rely on my hood and safety glasses. A white sun hoodie makes a huge difference.
Sheri loves her blue sun hoodie! Jay will be getting one sooner than later...thanks for watching!
Beautiful video. Thanks for sharing. subd & 👍44
Thanks for watching!
Ahhh! dried chick peas. that's 3 ideas in 2 days 3 vids. Another is dried shrimp, dried mushrooms, TVP.
Just starting to watch but already know heck of a trip.
It was a heck of a trip...we enjoyed every step of the way 🥰 Thanks for watching!
Great video guys!!
Thanks, Adam! If you've never done it, you should consider it. Such a diverse bit of the natural world. Hope to see you on the trail!
Beautiful! And that quinoa porridge… can I bother you for your recipe ?
Hey there, Blackflies can't 'see' you inside the tent. It actually does not matter how many get in because, they would bite you when presented with the opportunity, but they lose the ability to navigate and can't find you in the tent.
That's right; blackflies need polarized light in order to navigate.
We found that out literally the next day when Mike, our shuttle driver, picked us up! The next morning we couldn't believe how few bites we had gotten overnight, so we thought it was interesting. Mosquitoes are a different story...
This is great information - thanks!
I am just wondering if you downloaded the first map from my Canadian Canoe Routes. If so, then we have done our job well.
You have done, and continue to do your job very well! We did download the old MNR map and trip guide directly from your fabulous database. Our first resource when looking at a new canoe route is directly to myccr.com - no question. Thanks so much for the amazing information that can be found on your site
Enjoying the video so far, interesting to hear you talk about trying to do single carries. We’ve taken a page out of Bill Mason’s book of logic and now rarely push the single carries… instead, try to limit the risks and enjoy the woods, walk and stretch of legs. What were the weights of your packs when you began? I’m sure they weren’t light!
It's a great point to not push the carries on portages - which we rarely do. Our proclivity toward single carries has to do with our longer trips being difficult to schedule with our jobs, etc. - so being as efficient as possible in our travel is essential for us being able to take on these bigger trips. The Ostrom pack weighed about 70lbs, while the green pack was about 45lbs (most of that was our food for 10 days). Thanks for checking out the video!
@@beautyofthebackcountry thanks for the info, you two are troopers!
@Saltedbiscuit0007 Lol We're sure you can relate, but we do it to ourselves for the love of the natural world and all that it has to offer
Thanks for the great video! We have been trying to get to the Mississagi for the past couple of years. Where would we find the recipe for the "world famous quinoa porridge"?
Haha...let's see if Sheri will give up her secrets ;) It has quinoa, local freeze-dried berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries), coconut milk powder, cinnamon, and a dash of love
