  • Evangelical Steven Pynakker interviews John Hamer, a minister in the Community of Christ (formerly know as the RLDS). In this special episode John talks about growing up LDS, questioning his faith in Highschool, and his time spent as a student at BYU. For a period of time John pretty much left his faith, and then returned to the Restoration via Fawn Brody! A pretty in depth dive into John's theology is also explored. What does a metaphorical approach to Scripture look like? Is a more nuanced view of Church history a better approach in a post-modern world? These and many other topics are addressed in this fascinating episode.

I’m loving John Harmer while watching the Community of Christ channel. Very honest when dealing with theological history on early Christianity origins.

Wow John is only a few years ahead of myself when it comes to researching Mormon history.
I’m almost 45 and my mother left the church in 87/88 due to The God Makers and the Tanner’s, and she went back to the church in 90. I was aware of certain things over hearing my mother speaking. In ‘02 when I left I read the same Tanner books and Fawn Brody. That took me down a major rabbit hole and with FAIR around now a day I soak in their apologetics to see what has changed since I left. Stuff denied by the church when I left has now been admitted too, though either whitewashed or majorly distorted

Hamer knows well the interface between the Restoration churches; he's fair as he speaks of strong and weak points in each.

@ mormon book reviews I was wondering what verse and what version of the Bible does your plaque represent? I’ve been looking at Isaiah 11 6 and it says the wolf and the lamb in every version. I think your guest is confused about something I wouldn’t want him going around misrepresenting the Bible please get back to me

    • @MormonBookReviews

The community of Christ logo has a lion and a lamb. The wolf and the lamb is correct, though many Christians have also used the lion and the lamb to mean the same thing.

    • @unindoctRYANated

@@MormonBookReviews Isaiah, 11 6 definitely used to say lion and Lamb in every version and translation. There are thousands of supernatural changes in the Bible‘s that you own your self I guess the question is that if the words in your Bible were super naturally changing, would you want to know I can prove this to you don’t deny miracles when they are right under your nose. If you are interested, just ask, I will direct you to the evidence.

I'm sure this won't be popular, but changing the way to keep people will not bring them to Yeshua. What good is the salt if it is lost it's savor. On top of that when you water down the message YHWH's sheep will not hear Yeshua's voice in it because it was modified. I agree many have not handled many things correctly, but that doesn't make changing it correct.
Those who pervert/change the ways of the Lord are part of the great and abominable church.
1 Nephi 22:14 And every nation which shall war against thee, O house of Israel, shall be turned one against another, and they shall fall into the pit which they digged to ensnare the people of the Lord. And all that fight against Zion shall be destroyed, and that great whore, WHO HATH PERVERTED THE RIGHT WAYS OF THE LORD, YEA, THAT GREAT AND ABOMINABLE CHURCH, shall tumble to the dust and great shall be the fall of it.

Interesting interview... but my sense is John embraces a religion based on social justice and intellectualism, which is fine I guess, but seems divorced from the miraculous faith events of the restoration, and not that far from philosophical academic secularism. I mean who plowed David Whitmer's fields in 1829? Why did Mary Whitmer say an angel showed her the gold plates? Would John say there were no gold plates? Metaphor? Maybe I'm inferring too much.

You make some very good points. Thanks for your feedback. John definitely represents a more progressive view within the Restoration movement. As an outsider I'm trying to engage the full spectrum of your tradition. I have had Patrick McKay on as a guest and he represents a more conservative view.
