Today I drive the third generation Porsche Cayenne GTS. It saw the return of the V8 for the firs time since the original GTS, but now with turbo power for extra torque, and a chassis that has no business being as good as it is.

Yes. Exactly! That is what it is! I was also contemplating…
OMG that exhaust is hilarious 😂😂
That exhaust reminded me of an old Briggs and Stratton rotovator I had !
lmao
Haha, I can see that, I have a lawn mower with an Briggs and Strattion engine that also is similar, especially the first start of the year after being stored for half a year.
@@johan21678 I've owned cars with non-standard silencer perforations which sounded similar.

Sounds bloody awful.
We had a local Porsche club event on racetrack las summer and one club member came with his daily 2024 Cayenne S (FL with the same V8), as his GT3 was still not delivered. And he managed to drive lap times with fully stock Cayenne S equal to 981 Cayman S/718 base/S models which was super impressive for such big car with standard SUV tires.
Out of interest, which track was this? Without being rude, how much do you think was down to him being a much better driver than the Boxster owners?
@@coolkid123456100 This is Bikernieki race track in Riga, Latvia (it is in the City and is still not closed 😀). This is old track build in 1960ties and modernized in last 10 years. The lap for cars is around 3.5kms long and average speed for the lap was around 140kmh (it had many medium speed cornets, one slow speed corner and couple of fast speed corners). 992 GT3 can do it in 1:25 with good driver. That fully stock Cayenne did it 1:34, which is the time achieved by good divers with 981 Boxster S. My PB time ir 1:36 with 987.2 base 6sp Manual Cayman with semi slick tires.
@@salvissmudo4496 thank you for being so detailed!
In context thats an insanely impressive car
Years ago, I stopped by a PCA autocross in my old 958.1 tt to watch the cars go round. They insisted I put it on the course. Beat out a couple of Caymans and 911s. To be fair, it was raining so the AWD didn't hurt. Traded it for a current version CTT. Great fun!
Owned a GTS Cayenne for 3 years now, driven Urus, Pursangue, and 707 and the GTS beats them all when it comes to living with it, GTing it, and swinging it around the mountains occasionally.
Small note, the Coupe version has a wider rear track than the regular version, and to me I could feel it. But its subtle
@ trust me if you drive the Pur you’ll understand. You simply cannot wring out that engine in that chassis. And certainly not with 4 other people in the car
@@Demoaccount-i2k Actually, it's amply powered. It's not too much to be overkill, but not less to the point where it struggles. With the current generation 9YA chassis putting out 493 HP and 487 lb./ft., the GTS can scoot around plenty around town...
@@Demoaccount-i2k on paper yes. In practice? Even a 2020 Cayenne S 'estate' with turbo V6 is more than capable to carry 4 adults in comfort while keeping up with 718 Cayman S and 991 Carrera S on the road. I'd imagine a GTS would be more than satisfying enough.
Never understood the coupe version but the normal car has always caught my eye on the roads.
I generally don't understand coupe SUVs but Porsche lower the rear seats so the rear headroom stays the same and the cargo space is barely effected at all so it doesn't offend me as much as others.
I remember when the Acura ZDX first came out I tried to sit in the back at an auto show. I say try because I would have to remove my head down to the neck to fit (I'm 6'0"). That car was just plain stupid.
The coupe is just beautiful
@@brianiswrong you never understood maybe because it's more sexy and have a much much better look on the back than a normal break looking. I will never buy a normal version coz it's so ugly.
Diesel Cayenne owner here, keeping it forever
This video was TV worthy. I generally enjoy you videos but this one had a little something extra.
TV worthy content, love from South Africa 🇿🇦
Got one as new back in 2022 and will drive it until the wheels will fall off 🤷🏻♂️ The best daily driver I ever had and probably will ever have, it’s almost perfect.
Along with my 718 BGTS4.0 (that I know you don’t really like 😅) they form my dream garage, having them both I finally stopped thinking what will be my next car as I don’t see any reason for changes, I’m content, those fully suit my needs 😎
Probably an M5 would be a replacement. I often wonder what I would change my Cayenne for. Cannot think of anything. Superb for travelling across continents with the family. Into the Alps in -30 and to South of Italy and France in +30.
@@Spenny909had a diesel BMW F10 saloon and even though it was xdrive, which implicates 10mm more of ground clearance I often scraped the front bumper on curbs while having bigger loads, in M5 it would be only worse 😅 For an all-rounder having SUV or at least cross-country-style wagon is a must for me.
You’re one of the very few to achieve enlightenment - someone who has done well AND made yourself happy with what you’ve chosen. Who cares what anyone else thinks about your choices? I’m very happy that you have achieved this very rare and inspiring outcome. Something tells me that your wheels will never fall off.
I’m a bit worried about the qualifier ‘almost’ in your first paragraph. That little word can expand and expand and suddenly you own another Quattroporte (convinced the 4.7 fixed everything) and are perhaps a trade away from an E46CSL (which you will immediately hate) and in 10 years maybe bet the farm on a £50k RR Spectre that needs a battery service and a new headlining…
I’m content that you are content. 😎
@@ChristianWilliams-ht1xmthanks! I used word „almost” only because I wanted to be fully honest on the thing and there are some little details that IMHO were better thought out in the BMWs that I had in the past, but one thing is that as a whole product I’d always choose my Porsches over any BMW and the second one is that BMW does its best to ruin everything that I liked about those cars, so actually I cannot imagine a fleet that would better suit my needs than the one I already have, I only wish I had added PDCC and PID to Cayenne and extended leather package to my Box, but those are just small, nice-to-have details, not anything that would make me think about any changes 😅
@ My crystal ball has rolled under my bed and stopped near a dusty old Ouija board. For fun, I asked about your two car garage in the future. It predicted 10 cars, 8 kept off site and out of sight. There’s a 1980ish 911 3.0SC, a Citroėn SM with a chocolate brown interior, a BMW E34 M5 3.8 on its ninth motor, a Fiat Uno Turbo which smells of fire, anF350 Super Duty for taking things to the tip and the rest are a mystery.
The Ouija board has also persuaded me to look at the classifieds for a 500E and DEFINITELY NOT ANOTHER Quattroporte V, all of which are now past timebomb detonation. Much like a Range Rover at 3 years 1 day old…
These things sound epic in real life, cold start just epic, microphone used, microphone position or UA-cam transcoding must be to blame, I have a gen 2 turbo (4.8 litre TT with only 385kw) it has a handmade German capristo cat back exhaust, I can’t wait to jump in and drive it every morning , keep up the great work Jay another great video
@@jasons4745 Many years ago I had the Gen 1 Turbo with custom decat and it was wonderful to drive/listen to/look at. Now massively obsolete and outdaded, but back in the day it was a great car for a super reasonable price. Didn’t have any problems apart from self afflicted ones for 70 000kms.
We've owned one for just over a year now. We also run an X5 and in my opinion the X5 is the better car....it's more roomy. Has equal performance and way better economy. Our Cayenne has over 25k's worth of options...so a big spec car...and looks wise, looks epic. But driving wise no where near the BMW.
Note the word capable... this car offroad is actually amazing it does everything so impressive
Easily on par with a higher spec wrangler
I have a 2017 CayenneS with 127000K miles, its an awesome car ,I cant see us ever parting with it . This car just drives great . I like it better than our 2023 Cayenne S .

Rest assured you are not the only ones suffering in the EU. Here in Finland the co2 emission based car tax is insane. For example a 2022 Macan GTS had 58000€ of just tax in the price making the total price for new Macan GTS 153000€

How many cars has this guy in Andorra got? Is he Jay Leno?
Impressive James, you’re on Misha and Doug levels of back catalogue videos if you’re releasing summer videos in January!
Hey James, you have missed the sweet spot in the range for under £40k. 2nd gen Diesel S with the V8. The one with the insane torque they used to tow the 747 as a gimmick. You MUST try one, you will be AMAZED!!
Hi James!
Thank you for a great channel!
I also very much like when we have guy like you that are concerned about the whole picture about motoring.
I very much liked your analysis of the Formula 1 footprint (I'm not a hysterical "green", just a normal engineer who cares about
continuing being a motor guy together with the planet...)
I also very much liked your recent episode "You gotta see this" and how it is important to be in control over content,
being owned by companies and so on, BUT....
Your stance on marketing is great and I like your ads and the product you show. Fine.
This episode with the Porsche Cayenne GTS is ...Great!
HOWEVER, I think you should know that something has happened at 13:12...!
I watched the episode on my iPhone and at approx 13:12 there was a "single fram commercial flash", like with Coca-Cola
in the early days of cinema...until it was banned illegal; in this case it is Car Vertical that is flashed!
Most probably you do not know this, but I think I should share the info and you can have "a serious conversation with someone" ;-)
Big thanks and good luck with everything!

the exhaust sounds STUPENDOUS!!!
Love your German executive accent 😂 ja let's do it

Audi SQ8 would be my preference in this range.
Weird exhaust noise for sure. But having being driven (didn’t get to drive it) in a GTS, it felt really good. Used would have a less eye watering price.
Got a 4.4 Range Rover diesel, and got a Porsche 4.2 2016 . Both twin turbo v8s
Range Rover breaks a lot, Porsche doesn’t although when I bought it the DPF kept causing me issues as it was super low mileage.
So I deleted DPF and the EGR, had it mapped and ohh my word the thing is a tyre shredding torque rocket. Done like 40k miles in it and never broken down but it’s just not a Range Rover.
Difference being air suspension and ultimate luxury with a range.
You would never tune/ map a range but oh my Porsche love it and it’s just the gift that keeps giving.
Ride comfort nothing on the Range Rover but it does go into corners good
DPF and EGR delete? How do you get it past MoT? Definitely illegal here, and with good reason.
@ makes absolutely no difference, DPF is located inside the exhaust they simply open it up and take it out. No smoke no nothing . Endless diesel car enthusiasts get this job done and never have any issues
@@joshuathompson7714 DPF removal is illegal with good reason, you will NOT pass an MoT with it missing, the emissions will be way outwith the legal limits.
@ had to do it an an evoque I had due to the faulty DPS , passed every time and still pass every time with my Cayenne. I appreciate your comments but I’ve never had any issues with MOTs on numerous garages I’ve used over the years
That thing makes a _rude_ noise!
I like it, even if a few don't.
Finally a location where your shirts blend in. 😃
I go skiing two to three times during every season in the Spanish Pyrenees not too far away from Andorra and almost without fail I get overtaken by a higher spec Cayenne (and not a lot else) on the way back down to Barcelona . The roads are very similar to your videos, I call it my personal racetrack having plenty of fast bends and very little other traffic. The sound from their exhausts as they go by is exactly the same as your video.
Having driven the GTS and Turbo, there was no comparison in performance. I bought the Turbo. I'm not enjoying the maintenance costs, though.
Looking into the GTS
What maintenance costs have you encountered if you don’t mind?
@ashs1670 just the standard maintenance, but it's very expensive if you use the dealer. Def look into it before you buy
How is a 4 door car a coupe?
Both 957 GTS and 958 GTS had V8s it was only the 958.2 that Porsche put a turbo V6 in.
In 1998 I had an 82 Nissan Sunny 1.3 DX.
Hi JayEmm love watching your car reviews. Thank you for always presenting a rather fair and objective review.
Watching in South Africa, we tend to understand Kilowatt (Kw) and Toque (Nm).
I notice when stating performance specifications, you do provide a Nm number.
I find myself pausing your video and going onto convert Ps or Housepower to Kw so I can relate.
If it isn't too much to ask, I would appreciate if you could so kindly share power in Kw too 😅
Thanks for the great reviews
That exhaust reminds me of when I had a playing card in the back wheel of my Grifter
If only they let you option 2+1 rear seats itd be perfect ....
If you got the cash; get the Turbo GT and you will never look back; the ultimate Swiss knife shaped as an SUV; love every second of driving it
That exhaust sounds ridiculous. Like a diesel pickup truck from the 1990s. Ugh!
Sounds like the engine's broken
If you don’t like it, don’t buy one

What does that mean?
Folks in the US take SUVs and lift them, add some off-road stuff, and then camp out of them. James, can I ask how this compares to an Alfa Stelvio QV? And would you consider them in the same bracket etc when buying?
Agree. Have mine on order to replace BMW X5 M60
It's great unless you're in town. Then the auto collision system will activate when nothing is on the road, or the car will drive you off the highway when the lane keep assist is active. Even more so, the auto/start/stop doesn't work correctly and sometimes won't turn on when you take your foot off the break on a steep downhill @ a traffic light. Good luck turning that stirring wheel when that happens. Porsche needs to seriously fix these systems. It's worse than a 40k car.
Agree about the rear end collision creation system and lane "assist".
@@lkearney7299 I literally thought it was a just "my cars a lemon issue." Then I went online to google. It's been a massive problem across many of their newer models. Took a 30k loss on mine to get rid of it. Was too stressful to drive, not knowing when this would happen, and it was extremely difficult to disable each drive. It can't be permanently turned off. The car slammed the breaks on me in the middle of the road at 35MPH, when there was nothing in front of the car. Besides countless other "errors."
I really hope Porsche does something. Otherwise the car has a solid motor, good handling, and looks fantastic.
Probably the front windshield and radar sphere need cleaning; never had an issue with front collision assist; the rear one is a bit sensitive; I’ve disable the Munavering assist and its fine now
@@nowornever81 Cleaned, sent to dealer 2x to check the 2 problems. "No issues found, working as intended" Service tech said, Its labeled that way because Porsche doesn't have a solution. Some of these just don't work. After 3 months of these issues I got rid of it. I prefer Porsches for their handling, but they have to fix this stuff. My last new SUV before this one, broke down 2 times on road trips from engine failure warnings. So, I got a 2024 hoping it would be better. The motor was better but the electronics failed LOL.

One thing that has always baffled me is the HP, Torque, and Newtons.
I get that HP and Torque translate to pull and grunt, but what's the point of Newtons? Is just to slap huge numbers whilst saying the same thing covered by HP and Torque?
What's special about 6Bn Newton Meters when a car has already expressed it has 600HP and 900ft lbs of Torque?
What do the Newtons tell me that HP and ft lbs of Torque won't? Are Newtons the bit between the engine HP and Torque at the wheel?
Harry Diamond has a nice one of these.

Trading success isn’t just about technical analysis skills. It’s also about discipline and emotional maturity. Remember, it’s not about being in the market at the right time, but rather about being in the market for the right time. Thanks to Sophia Haney’s wisdom, daily trade signals, and my commitment to learning, I’ve been seeing steady increases in my daily earnings to more than 16BTC. Keep up the great work!
I hope this inspires someone to start investing today, regardless of age. I wasn’t financially free until my 40s, but I’m still in my 40s with a third property, passive income, and four of my five goals. Investing in the financial market was a wise choice. Thanks for sharing this incredibly inspiring video!
Diversify your income streams to boost your earnings. This year, I’ve successfully done this by investing while I work. I invested through Sophia Haney, the CNBC anchor who often mentioned her. She invested my startup capital in less than three months after getting certified.
I have been quite cautious to get involved in this specific industry, but I believe that this is the perfect time to do so. I went to a seminar where the speaker discussed how lnvesting in cryptocurrencies may result in gains in the near future of well over $4.5 million. I have to know which coin to buy with.
I invested across major markets and follow Sophia’s rules, a great financial advisor. My portfolio has grown by 20-30% monthly while my IRA stagnates. Her exceptional diversification skills have not limited my portfolio to my choices; they reflect her placements. She provided me with financial independence.
That’s great! Your investment advisor must be excellent. I’ve read about people who improved their financial stability with investment advisors. Can you tell me who your broker is? I have $500,000 set aside for the stock market to boost my income.
The first model was to be kind butter faced to say the least but once Porsche realised the public actually had some eyes 👀 😂 of their own, Porsche actually realised they needed to get their Cayenne designers down to the opticians to get their eyes 👀 tested and for those who needed it were issued with the glasses they should’ve been wearing in the first place 🤓 anyway once they revised it the Cayenne has never looked back! They ooze class and unlike the great looking range rovers, you actually see them on the actual road as opposed to seeing them on the back of a rescue vehicle
Funny, the only thing I can comment on is the poor air vent for the front passenger, the one near the door. No real thought has gone into it, maybe because of the airbag?
I have to be honest, I watched a lot of JayEmm videos previously - However, I just find the videos incredibly boring in comparison to other car channels on UA-cam.
Nothing makes me want to click anymore. LIke, yay - I get to see the interior view of a car that's doing 30mph with some bloke rambling for 20 minutes straight.
I'm not trying to hate for no reason - It's just some constructive feedback.
Yes, the Cayenne is awesome. However, I would say the S is the sweet spot in the range.
That roofline compromises it vs a RR.
That's why you buy the regular Cayenne instead.
The S has a V8 also
I’ve just realised this is the previous generation model. Has this video been re-released then?
Lovely lovely car”
As an owner of a full fat Range Rover and cayenne turbo GT, they shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same sentence. Two completely different cars one is a luxury , supple ride SUV and one is a dynamic / raised sports car
Yea, another of JMs rather odd comparisons.
@@Flaming-HedgehogI couldn’t agree more.
Hello. I don’t think he’s aiming the advice at someone who owns both a RR-SV, and a top tier Porsche SUV (Urgh.). Instead I assumed he was talking to someone with £70k to spend on their dream SUV. From the comments above, it’s the person with £70k to spend that keeps your cars from sinking even further and your children’s pony collection heading to Riyadh faster than the stolen RR gets to Baghdad. This in turn keeps your wife away from the Tennis coach.
There are MANY MANY viewers who will never afford this lovely GTS and I’m glad James has driven it (in rather a lot of style…) along an Andorran pass so we hear the motor waffle, snuffle and sing. I’m really pleased that this car can make such a good noise. I’ve only heard them do a ‘launch control’ take off before cutting in front at traffic lights. That’s something that shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentence of either car’s first owner’s driving standards.
Three cheers for 2nd, 3rd and nth names on V5 documents across the land. Congratulations on getting the car of your dreams!

Agree they shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence: One is properly put together, reliable, vastly more capable and will cost far less [real world - end-to-end, across, say, 5 years] than the other. To add: he mentioned the RRS...
If I was forced into an SUV, it would be the Macan GTS, not the Cayenne. Luckily, I don't need an SUV so my 718 PDK GT4 is just the perfect performance level for the street.
Thing is i love the looks of the rangerover! And i don't like the looks of the cayenne simples really 😂
I dare say in terms of comparing 'real world ownership' of the RRS and the GTS - reliability - should be a consideration. I personally have more faith in the Engineering from Porsche, than JLR lol

No, better buy the ex. Erling Haaland GLS 63 AMG from germany ;-)
Had a 24 plate Cayenne hybrid on loan for a week. Nice and comfortable, roomy and quiet. Apparently it had 470 bhp but it didn't feel like it. Didn't sound like a Porsche either. My Cayman, 2 litre with PDK and Sports Chrono, feels much more urgent and quicker. Would like to try a V8 Cayenne, though. As for the comparison against the Range Rover. I think the RR is better looking and more luxurious inside but JLR's reliability record is a joke which would see me pick the Cayenne over it every day.
Nice Posch !
Will a turbocharged engined really be robbed of power at altitude?

Thanks for the video… but remember! It’s Porsche- “a”!
Cool
I like this car a lot, but for daily commutes, luxury and comfort I’d be taking the new Range Rover Sport. They are the 2 best looking SUVs on the market
The new Range Rover Sport is an abomination of design.
Reliability!
RRS in the lovely candy red does look nice to me. Bit 'opulent' though whereas the Cayenne somehow manages to blend in with the crowd slightly easier, UK dislike of flashiness and all that. I'd like a D350 with all the trimmings and the fancier suspension (Stormer pack) to mooch along in, still about £100k short though alas.
As you said, they are definitely very handsome. BMW decides to do some more great cars with looks that take some getting used to.
@ The X5 is one of the most resolved and cohesive designs out there in SUV land. Just because most of the rest of the BMW range is visually challenging, doesn't mean they all are.
Cayenne by far, the insurance is half the price, the drive is sporty and reliability especially in later years is far better.
If I was forced to buy an SUV type vehicle this would be it! But I'd rather keep my Cayman to be honest.
Ive got the cayenne turbo e hybrid, 741 hp. It does everything well, except look and feel prestigious. I came out of a RR svr, nearly brought the rr sport SV. Not sure i made the right choice. The porsche has better tech , handles well. But its lower to the ground and just doesnt feel premium to me. Nice back end, but the front is butt ugly. I do enjoy it in electric mode around the town, and the burmister stereo is epic, well worth the money and better than RR meridian stereos. The tesla panel in the rr put me off, i like the analoge buttons in the porsche. RR made the wrong call putting everything into a panel. But, the rr looks the part i have to say. I also find the porsche ac underwhelming. Last comment, the GTS is underpowered to my tastes. Buy the ehybrid, it delivers when you put your foot down and press boost in sport + mode.
