Loved my Coupe 20V Turbo - greatest car I’ve had. Very decent laptimes AND a great GT for Eurotrips, while being both economical, practical & comfortable. Had zero mechanical issues over 12years other than a clutch giving in to my 340hp.
Hi, where you from? What coupe did you have? Normal 20vt or the 20vt plus? I ask as mine was mapped at 340bhp and would be interested to find a previous owner for more info.
@@cylturbskie Sweden! And it was totalled in a huge garage block fire.
Definitely one of my favourite sounding engines, I would love to own a Coupe for a while but I already have too many cars.
I own a VIS 155bhp and I have to say after owning a turbo I actually prefer instant power delivery being naturally aspirated, of course it's no where near as quick as a turbo but it isn't slow and feels like your going faster because of that awesome sound!
I love these cars, but if thats a fairly good example, then id steer clear, personally. Those floor repairs all need doing again properly and theres so many pockets of corrosion that you may as well just get it all done at once, or you'll be doing welding annually for a good few years.
My brother in law has one of these , one of the last LE models with 6 speed gearbox , leather trim complete with its LE plaque on the dash. Amazing engine sound and performance. His example , once again been off the road for a few years or so , and will need refresh. But I think they are well worth doing. Engine wise, people talk about the “ death” hose , whatever that is , and the exhaust manifold can give grief.
Managed to get a very tidy 20v Turbo with 82k recently. Absolutely love it. A few niggles but what a fun car and great sound.
Great to hear!
I agree. A great looking car that's survived very well and sounds great. In your capable hands it will be back where it belongs on the road again
Great car the only thing that I felt always let the Coupe down was the wheels, they always looked pants
Is it me or have I missed a few videos off Neil, looks quite a tidy car, a good wash and polish after you've sorted the rest of the mechanicals it'll be a nice coupe.
Used to have a bravo HGT155, best sounding car I've ever owned. Really miss that one, should not have sold that!! But it has a good home and owner.
Great car mate... i have a Stilo Schumacher 2.4 5 cyl. But no turbo... i wish Fiat had put the 20v turbo in the stilo.. But the 24 valve engine does sound lovely . i have the stock exhaust with the ss rear box twin pipes..
Im half tepmted to drop one of these engines into my Punto HGT in the future. the headlights are an easy fix. I just did a diy video on my channel
20vt is a great car, agree engine sounds amazing, had a Portofino 20vt and still miss it , great design, a cheap Ferrari
If these had been available in the United States I would have been at my local dealership waving my checkbook and yelling "TAKE MY MONEY NOW PLEASE"!
It’s great you missed out on the turds you’d love that we had so many of to grow to hate 🤣
had a Lancia Lybra 2.0 with this engine; lovely engine....lasted 365,000kms before i got a head gasket leak ... :-(
Sounds amazing....I bought a Bravo 155 HGT new and loved it. V67GPO
One of my all time favourite cars!!!
Beautiful... 👌💙
I just wish they'd bothered to do the Barchetta in rhd. Sure there's a tiny handful of rhd conversions, but it could have been huge for Fiat.
Always loved the look of these
Absaloutly brilliant video Neil ❤👍 what a beautiful car brilliant Neil have you had any dealings with the new fiat tipo the 2017 is it any good
Love your passion. Thanks again for sharing.
See there is a red one with 205,000 miles in Wigan for just over a grand, thinking of taking a few brave pills and getting it as a winter tinkering project.
Snap it up
getting a spare low mileage perfect running 20vt engine for my plus soon, may start doing videos doing either a forge build series or an engine gasket (including head gasket) refresh.
them grilles are awful, but they are good if your bonnet release breaks inside the car as you can wedge an allan key against the mech release between the slats to manually release the bonnet catch. you cant do that with the later style/plus style grilles.
Good luck with it.
@@ItaliaAutos cheers pal, literally only a spare engine that i can build or refresh over time, going to my current one alive aslong as possible having new stage 3 turbo technicks hybrid, cambelt and everything else renewed that end of the engine in july then new oil pickup rear main and clutch replaced next year with my even more uprated fuel pump to replace the walbro 255.
Great looking cars would love to own one. Agree on the sound of coupled with the right exhaust.
I had a 20v turbo in portofino blue .regretted it from day one as I bought a car that was stood 10yrs off ebay .my fault really buying unseen.loads of faults and the paint and body was rough.really wish I'd bought a better one as I've loved them from when they were new .had nightmares owning that car .doldrums it for 600 quid .it's on marketplace now for 3800 and had a lot of love since I had it .I agree that the noise is amazing.
Really like these, seriously considered one not long ago (a V6 GTV was also considered), would had to have been the 5 cylinder Turbo, but really needed a car i could leave out on the drive (i would have wanted the Coupe garaged) and single car use everyday (would have ended up with a second car to keep the Coupe nice) so went for an Alfa 159 Tbi Ti.
Neil Porsche next week plz 👍
My dailey moon grey plus gets attention everywhere. Hard to go somewhere where people dont come over to ask about it.
Great to see Neil. I beg to differ on the engine sound! My GTA has to be way better.
All the old underseal needs to come off... just trapping moisture and quietly killing the car...
Lovely example though...
This was a great car and its designed inspired many brands of today.
OMG... Beautiful sound! 👌💙
Fiat really had some cool cars in the 90s! Love the Coupè
Hi Neil great car Mate so love these
100% Agree! Sounds better and performs better than the Alfa V6.
Your the man to save it.
Great car love the 156 facelift
Cheers
I have the turbo plus running alot of power. Having an issue where sometimes itll give me the 1.35 bar of boost it was mapped on, and sometimes it will only give me base boost pressure.
I have had to plug the stock ebv back in to control the boost as the apexi avcr boost valve/solenoid has decided to completely die.
Any coupe enthusiasts on here that have a rough idea whats up? Could it be a knackered (leaking?) wastegate or the gate sometimes sticking open or closed???
A manual 5 cylinder is a beautiful thing. I decided a while back that i needed one, fiat coupe and hgt bravo were at top of list. However ended up with a mk4 golf with vr5 engine. Not a great handling car but the sound is addictive
Vr5 is a pig with a horrible sound and poor economy.
Only exception to the vr5 is one with a turbo strapped to it.
I always thought the non turbo 5 cylinder was the VIS engine, yours looks like the turbo rocker cover? I had a scorpion exhaust on my 20v turbo back in the day as the standard one just fell off one day, loved the sound it made. Replaced mine with WRX and instantly and regretted it, did get to like the WRX though, after installing a After burned vortex exhaust. Id even bought the le siden skirts to fit what a idiot I was.
it's an Early non Turbo so Non VIS .... personly I think it's the better engine as less issues with intake
Painful to watch! Nearly bought a lovely Portofino Blue turbo two years ago. Prettiest car I ever saw. Dashboard had colour-coded dials with yellow needles. Sunroof, low mileage - the lot. Then I saw a GTV V6 advertised in my home town and bought that instead. Regrets? Yes. 😥- I do love the Alfa with its Busso - and both are lovely looking cars; but still I feel I missed a trick really and should've been more adventurous and bought the Fiat. Sounds like you prefer the Fiat too, Neil.
those airfilters are the same as Bravo and Marea and easily gotten .... the early Non VIS is 147 bhp and the VIS is 155bhp ...
Working man’s Ferrari 🤌🏼
did some come with the bottoms of the bumpers and sills body coloured ?
Yes the newer cars did
I have always loved the Fiat Coupe, it's one of the few cars which have some genuine 'style' from the era.
Comparing it to a Ferrari is a bit of a stretch though, the Fiat is much better.
It's red and Italian lol pretty close haha
It,s the rot thats in the boot that usually really bad
TOP
Was all set on buying one of these last summer. Purchased a BMW E39 instead. It needed to be a daily driver and parked outside. So I think the Bavarian was the more sensible option.
I like the fiat 5 cylinder engine note but it ain't busso
A 20VT with a big bore stainless steel exhaust sounds waay better than any version of the busso in my humble.....Also , a big bore ss exhaust on a 20VT usually mean's tuned , then , any busso engined Alfa would'nt see which way it went. Ever !!!....All while carrying 3 mates and their luggage....As an observation.
@@rogerpayne5336 I have a 20v Turbo with (with 454hp so it makes all the right tuned noises) and I'd have to say it's close in terms of sound. Down to preference rather than a clear winner. I do prefer the Coupé's soundtrack however. Didn't AutoDelta do a supercharger conversion for the Busso lump? 370bhp+ IIRC. Even a Coupé would have to be fairly heavily modifed to keep pace with that!
Ultimately, I think the world's a better place with both of these cars in it 🙂
My moon grey plus is running 340 that was on a dynojet Dyno at FC performance, with the tinkering/deletes I've done now probably 350.😂
Only issue is my apexi boost solenoid has completely died on me ( the aluminium corroded out completely), so now running only the stock EBV which could be causing my current issue.
Sometimes I get the 1.35 bar of boost it was mapped on, then I do another pull and it's only giving me 0.7 or 0.8 bar tops.
Not sure if that's a wastegate problem or just a boost leak on the intercooler piping - as I have tried a spare stock EBV and it's not changed anything. Anyone with more knowledge on this sort of thing here?
Also, I'm running what LOOKs like a 3.5 inch exhaust turbo back NO CAT, sounds fucking incredible.
Did you sell your blue one Neil?
That was a customer's car
These cars do seem to suffer from a lot of corrosion over where you are, are these any worse than any other car from this era?
148 bhp, IIRC.
Godd carrr
