I use deva curl they 100% cause buildup and I use a clarifying shampoo once a month and have no issues. Also if you use the wrong products from deva curl you will have a protein overload. Protein overload will cause dry hair. They have products with no protein. When I started using deva curl my hair stoped falling out. I think their products are amazing but the buildup needs to be removed.

I’ve talked to my husband who works for one of the largest beauty manufacturer company of the world. He thinks that devacurl must’ve changed their formula within the last few years with cheaper ingredients. Some larger companies do this to make even more profit. Devacurl will not come out and talk about this because that will be millions of dollars gone in profit. The ingredients they’re using must be the issue. Obviously the formula was good at one point, but seems like they got greedy and wanted more profit. What will most likely happen is word of mouth will make them go under. The more people talk about it the better, this SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING. Beauty product should not be doing this to anyone. Please do not use these products if anyone out there is!

    • @mekaykayyy

@@alyariel9713 yea I keep seeing that once the ownership changed the problems seemed to have started. So unfortunate because many people go to devacurl thinking "this is the one line for my hair". Again I'm sure once upon a time it was a great product line. Unfortunately some brands, or I should say brand owners... get greedy and are just looking at that $$$ instead of the integrity of their product and safety for consumers. I myself just started embracing the CG movement 2 months ago and almost bought Devacurl products... glad I never did. I'm thankful for people spreading awareness to protect others, super important and I hope people continue.

    • @alyariel9713

    • @mekaykayyy
      @mekaykayyy 5 років тому +8

@@alyariel9713 see I didn't want to fork out the money on devacurl either, and I can get it cheaper at Cosmoprof... and still didn't buy it lol. Shea moisture is a line I haven't fully checked out yet. So far I've been using As I Am cowash, Curls Blueberry Bliss, and Kinky Curly Custard. I plan on picking up and trying AG's more natural line and seeing how that goes. At least with AG's natural line it's 98% plant derived and gluten free. Some companies just have the consumer in mind, and some do not. I think Devacurl did at one point but the dollar sign got in the way with a new owner. I will continue to repost this message in hopes people will listen. My husband was like, yea people should not be touching this stuff, and the company he works for is massive. He understands ingredients and what they do and something is not right with Devacurl's products.

I started noticing really bad thinning. I ended up having to cut 11” off. Talk about a chop. I quit using their product a little over a month ago and I’m still itchy and my curls need to be restyled every day which is stupid because I could regularly go 4 days with amazing curls and I still have to wash a lot more.

YESSS! I remember when I was becoming obsessed with the idea of "quick and easy" perfection makers..Like skin products, hair products, exercise equipment etc and my dad warned me to be careful and said when a skin/makeup company is shilling their product, the models they use have been explicitly chosen because they already HAD those attributes the company is claiming their product will give to you.
It opened my eyes and made me realize how marketing is a scam built on exploiting our existing insecurities and perpetuating them by using models who have something naturally that we could never have.

You are the second person I watched today saying these things about Diva Curl. I bought the travel size products because my daughter told me that my results would be different because I’m African American. I only used the products...maybe twice(?), and I must say that I DID NOT like the results. My hair can get frizzy anyway, and the times I used it it didn’t change anything.
Yes, they are expensive items, but like everyone else I thought having to pay that much for a product, I would get the same results as those girls I saw on Instagram. I live in Texas and I know about the “winter” we had/have and it isn’t contributing to the non-curling effect I got with this product.

Well, this week, I learned that I am not going insane and that my products are ruining my hair. I am a hairdresser who stopped recommending deva curl because I felt so embarrassed about the way my hair looked while using it but still was somehow blaming myself! I loved the product at first but in the last year it was like the company replace the products with like Dollar store shampoo. One of my products went from being the best type of detangler I’ve ever used to turning my hair into a giant knot every time I put it in my hair.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I'm so glad I've come across all these videos of curly girls talking what I've been going through with my hair! When I started the CG method in Sept 2019 (also cut all my hair off), I used Loreal Ever Curl as my shampoo/conditioner and DevaCurl light defining gel as my styler. I immediately noticed my hair was becoming extremely dry and frizzy and I was losing a ton of hair. I only used the Ever Curl for two weeks and finally looked up the ingredients and noticed it contained drying alcohols so I attributed the hair loss/damage to that. I was also using the DevaCurl light defining gel that I had been using for years even before the CG method but never used other DevaCurl products. Since starting the CG method my hair has never been the same. It is super frizzy, much lower density, stringy, less curly, less ringlets/clumps, doesn't hold curl, just weird and awful looking! I've wanted to give up so many times on the CG method thinking that it just wasn't for my hair but maybe once I start using different products, it will get better. This sucks!

ER1N you’ll need to switch out your shampoo and conditioner for ones that don’t have sulfates, parabens, and sulfate free. You’ll also need styler products (these are hair products that help with maintaining your hair curly and shit) these styler products are creams, gels. Depending on the type of hair you have, you’ll need to see how heavy of products you can put in your hair. There are lightweight creams and gels available that are also curly hair friendly (you can check the ingredients). There’s also see salt spray for wavy hair. You’ll also need to see how often you’ll need to wash your hair each week. I recommend you look at the curly hair method but DO NOT use the low poo method or whatever the hell they call it. You cannot wash your hair and not put on shampoo as it’s literally needed to clean your hair and if you don’t, all the dirt in your will build up and I just don’t recommend it. Your shampoo should be the harshest thing on your hair. Hope this helps!

Omg I lost it when you said the dandruff spot, I had scaliness/flaking, itching, redness and thinning at my left temple for so long, and I also didn't consider my Deva products. For me, I thought I was using too much dry shampoo and not washing enough. Then I said screw it, bleached my hair blonde, got a bob, and wore it straight for like 3 months...lo and behold, after 3 months with no Deva products, I no longer had the itching, flaking/scaliness or redness on my temple, and I had a bunch of little sprouts of hair growing back in. I noticed and though, wait this makes no sense, I was washing my hair using purple shampoo regularly, using heat to style every time, and had double processed my hair, why is my scalp better and fuller after going blonde? Then I saw a video by the curl ninja, and finally it clicked.

Just stumbled on this video. I used DevaCurl products on my hair 5+ years ago. I liked them at first but after almost a year, they began to weigh my hair down. It's distressing to hear these stories of how DevaCurl is ruining hair. When I think back to when I used it, I did have an itchy scalp but never attributed it to the products I was using. After a few other brands in between, I switched to All About Curls by zotos purchased from Sally's. Finally products that worked and were affordable. I also invested in a shampoo brush purchased from amazon. It's all silicone and massages the scalp to prevent hair breakage and promote a healthy scalp. Your hair is beautiful, BTW! So glad to hear you got it back to where you like it. :)

@@onwednesdayswewearpink2761 the problem with western world is you guys rely completely on shampoo and heat. Discard them. I am from India, ya the land where women have healthy hair. And its not a joke. We come from a tropical world where it gets really difficult to manage hairs. Yet our routine consists of hair oils-every two-three days fpr curly hair girls. And shampoo only once a week. Straight hair girls need to get rid of sebum so they may wash their hair regularily, but curly hair girls need oil, so its better to let the natural oils come out, which takes around two weeks on an average depending on the type of curls. Which is why it is ultra necessary to oil your hair.
Do that with natrual oils like Arnica oil, coconut oil, neem oil, bhringraj oil, and your hair will be fine.

I started researching what would change the texture of my hair and finally ordered some new products- which of course worked miracles instantly. Thank you so much for talking about your scalp issues and what you experienced with DevaCurl, (my hair never liked DevaCurl) becuase it sounds like my issues are almost identical to the problems people had with DevaCurl. It’s definitely the products that did it. You can’t cut hair into being straight. When cutting your hair your cutting something that is dead. So cutting it can’t trigger the strand to go straight. Even if you have a problem in your hair follicle it can’t make your curly hair straight. You can cause damage to the follicle and it’ll start to grow weird and possibly straight but what’s already curly will stay curly. If the curl pattern is changing is products your using directly on the hair. Hope that makes sense.

What you described as the buildup on your scalp sounds a lot like what I would get when I was 13 and had severe acne (except for the smell). My dermatologist explained it is called sebum dermatitis, and it's basically a vicious cycle of irritation : the skin suffocates so it gets irritated and flakes off. But then, it produces sebum to try and protect and repair itself, but that sebum becomes a great habitat for a fungus, which further irritates the skin that is already suffocating from buildup dead skin and sebum. And all that actually causes the hair to grow slower and even fall off.
To me, it sounds like it's the same kind of dermatitis you and a lot of DC users seem to experience, only instead of starting the circle with Excess sebum, it started with contact irritation, even possibly allergies.
