  • Hey guys. A lot of you asked about my personal experience with DevaCurl and what are my thoughts on everything that's been happening. I'm sad to say the least. This whole situation has been devastating to all of us, especially those affected with hair and scalp damage.💔
    I hope they are able to recover quickly, and that whatever is causing this is made clear so more people don't get affected. Thanks for watching and thanks for the support. Love you guys. ❤️

    This is such a tough situation. Obviously those who have experienced damage to their hair and scalps have suffered a lot, but this can't be easy for people like you either. I really respect the maturity you've shown in this video, you were the first curly hair influencer I followed and you've changed my life. Thanks for acknowledging the situation, my heart goes out to you, you're a victim of a different kind. I'm personally glad I live in Australia and it's difficult to get their products here, I've dodged a bullet. I just hope we find out what the problem is, I'm worried if it's contamination after production that it might affect other brands too...

      I used to have straight hair and had the same issues two years ago from a completely different brand and I only used shampoo and conditioner. The conditioner was the product that caused it and now two years later my hair is still recovering. It will take at least four years so I feel for all of those who are going through it and also wonder if it’s just one brand or if it’s just a coincidence.

      Same here, I live in Belgium and always wanted to buy devacurl.Though I could only buy it online. By dumb luck hadn't bought it yet but was really planning to use it in the future. I saw it as 'the big curly hair solution'.
      This whole situation also shows for me the problem with ALL cosmetics companies. Ingredients aren't tested enough but people use them in their hair, on their face like everyday.

      Hi I'm sorry your hair has this problem , I've used Deva since 2005 my hair is ok , but I would get frayed ends and dry but my hair changes during the seasons .my last Deva purchase was early June I would stick up for summer I work at a school and dont get paid over summer .so I wouldn't have money to re purchase over summer .But since there is a major problem with my all time favorite products .I now need to find new stuff .I hope your hair recovers soon .love you ❤️ things will get better .Stay positive .

      Omg, ayesha, i just watched your recent devacurl vids, & i burst into tears. I also got some serious damage from it, & altho I've bounced back pretty well, I'm nowhere near where I used to be, hair health wise. Having long, healthy curly was such a huge part of who I am, of my own self value, and since all my friends have straight hair... No one understood what it was like, watching my hair break and fall out and just... Die. No one understood why it was *so much more than just my hair.*
      But you did.
      Thank you.

      As a stylist, I wanna say that it’s never how much the product costs, but rather how the product reacts with YOUR HAIR and what’s in it. It’s so sad that deva curl is a professional grade product. For example, on days where I have some flakes I’ll go ahead and grab my head and shoulders!!!

    The lessons I've learned from this DevaCurl controversy are: 1.) Don't use just one brand of hair products. 2.) Because it's expensive, doesn't mean it's good or better. 3.) When your hair isn't up to par, consider that it may be the products you're using (don't first blame the weather, your hair, yourself, your routine, etc.)

      I used this product for about a year and thought I was sick or had allergies. Yes, I had openings on my scalp, red batch areas and thought I had rosácea, had hair falling out. I stopped using it because I also felt the products were weighing down my hair, not thinking about the other stuff were from the products. My hair is back to normal. Won’t touch the products again.

    So crazy. Thanks for informing us viewers about this Deva Curl predicament. Thank you for your video. I got the notification and scrambled to get my kid in bed to watch. You're one of the first curly girls I started following and I'm so grateful you posted this video. I had definitely noticed some changes in mine and my daughter's hair, but not to the extent others have. My daughter had beauuuutiful 3a curls, and now they're just waves, almost straight. But I also know some kids grow out of their curls? It's just going to take time to see if her curls come back or not. Thank you again for being transparent. I'm sure you have a lot of work to do to be removed from associating with Deva until they can figure out what's going on, or offer deeper levels of transparency. I'm grateful for the work you do, and the genuine servant's heart you display in wanting to help others. Hugs and prayers to you!

    You are actually my favorite hair influencer! We have the same hair type and I was so excited when I saw your face at Ulta! I want so much success for you especially in your future singing career! I started using DevaCurl 6 months ago and one day in December of this year, my hair freaked out in the shower... I have a bald spot in the middle of my part and my hair is so damaged beyond repair 😭 my hair has been falling out like crazy and I felt like no one could help! So I created a solution group on Facebook called DevaCurl Damage- road to recovery so we can all help each other out. Your more than welcome to check it out. I’ve always used DevaCurl! They were also the reason for me to start my curly hair journey and I loved their products. They had a huge sale in December and I went crazy buying their products. I used their products for one week and already my scalp was burning and before those products never use to do that to my scalp so I’m 100% positive that their products now are damaging people’s hair. Something went wrong with DevaCurl and it’s really sad. I just hope I can return all those products back even though it’s been like 2 months.

    Girl thank you beyond words for this. Finally someone who truly cares even in my own personal life I’m just told you’re still beautiful it’ll grow back. But I know that you truly understand.😌 I never even heard of diva curl until late 2019. I began using it less than two months ago. you are so very fortunate as I only used it maybe 4 or 5 times and honestly I feel I have lost half of my hair fullness, my hair was too my butt and have already cut 7 inches and more to go. I have balding spots I won’t go on and on about the emotional aspects I’m feeling in regards to this. Thankful I had a lot of hair to begin with, but quite devastated not only for me but in seeing what it has done to others too. Honestly who knows, in the 80s there was someone that was taintingTylenol and poisoning people. Could be merely a disgruntled employee. that may be the case with this but truly at this point DivaCurl IS RESPONSIBLE! I purchased the product after their knowledge of this and I’m pretty damn devastated. Yet Thankful to come across these videos only two nights ago. My hope is that i will not have further issues or that all of us will have further major health issues in this. Had they pulled the product I would not be where I’m at! So just another thank you and bless you for believing and sharing. Much love and light your way~•✨🌺💫

    I can’t even imagine how hard it was to make that video Kelly. To be an affiliate of Diva Curl and come out and say that you don’t recommend or endorse the products was BEYOND courageous. You have always been my favorite UA-camr for recommendations on my curly hair. I bought Diva Curl when I saw your gorgeous curls and was disappointed that NONE of the products work for me. First off Dive Curl products are WAY too expensive. But I still tried them ALL. Nothing work . It made my hair absolutely dry, gave no hold to my curls. But I wasn’t disappointed. When trying out new products especially on my natural curly hair it’s like rolling the dice you never know if it’s gonna work. But I still watch all your videos. Your apology was very sincere and I applaud you. I fan to the end !

    • @unchartedmotherhood4491
      @unchartedmotherhood4491 4 роки тому +47

      I like Dr. Dray's Video because for me, I believe that my negative hair reaction with devacurl, was all about scalp health. The no poo clogged my pores and therefore my hair started to fall out. I learned afterward that this is possible if the scalp is not properly cleansed. Especially people with my type of skin, which is prone to dandruff.

    • @RylieCollins
      @RylieCollins 4 роки тому +95

      Uncharted Motherhood I’m not a fan of it because it puts all the blame on the users. I was clarifying regularly, even using the build up buster once every other week and that’s what my scalp was having a nasty reaction to. I lost clumps of hair from using their products religiously. I normally love Dr. Dray but she didn’t even consider the people who clarify their scalps but still had reactions to the products.

    • @Creativehomedesigns
      @Creativehomedesigns 4 роки тому +52

      Camille Collins exactly it just seemed like she had no idea didn’t care to really research anything and just threw out some rubbish. There’s no way hair should be falling out like that from buildup because some people don’t clarify and they are fine but all the sudden everyone’s hair is falling out from “build up” I think not because my hair was shampoo regularly and i still had terrible effects

      @@unchartedmotherhood4491 the major problem with her video is that she didn't even research on the subject and none of her statements are applicable to this specific situation. She says the problem is the no poo technique, BUT if this was the problem, everyone else using no poo from other brands would be having the very same issues in the same scale, which isn't the case. She literally just made a video blaming the victims.

    i stopped using deva curl a year ago because i was noticing my scalp was getting extremely dry and every now and then my scalp would be burning and i was noticing my hair was flat including my curls and this was bothersome. so i started using other products it got to the point my husband had to help me with masking my hair 2-3x a week and putting head shoulders in my scalp for 5 minutes and thought maybe it was my hair causing these nasty scabs and flakes but it turns out it was the shampoo and conditioner that was damaging my scalp :( i’m glad you came forward with this and wouldn’t recommend the products to my dry curly hair peers.

    Hey! First I have to say thank you. The honesty in your voice and on your face says so much. This is tough. Deva Curl is the first product I used too when starting my curly journey. At first the products made my hair look amazing. I'd say a few months in I started with an itchy scalp and burns. What's crazy is I never thought it could be the no poo and conditioner so I kept using it. Then my hair was falling out...like a lot and I started hearing things. Anyway, thank you for addressing this. I'm sure it hasn't affected everyone, thank God, but it's also good to know that I'm not crazy. Lol

    Thank you for addressing this. I know, personally, dc knew way earlier than Ayesha’s video. I had major hair loss, damage, and loss of curl pattern in May 2019. This was the beginning of taking care of my curls. First, I bought the trial kit and I couldn’t believe how great my hair looked. So, I bought bigger bottles. That’s when the damage started. You can search those fb groups for videos and/or pictures of products on the shelves of Ulta looking completely different in either color and/or viscosity.
    My hair is still recovering but it’s much better than it was. My bald spots have finally filled in. I waited to see how dc handled the complaints. They didn’t care. They blamed us. I saw photos of children with bald spots. They still didn’t care. For that reason alone, I will never use that brand again.
    They’re testing everything but OUR products that we actually used. Many of us, including myself, have saved products for testing. We just can’t find anyone to do it. I want to know the cause so I can do my best to avoid it in the future. I’m afraid we’ll never have an answer.
    Also, please don’t blame yourself for promoting it. You couldn’t have known. Thank you for having the courage to make this video.

    I'm really happy that you talked about this issue with Devacurl. You were the first curly influencer that I started following 2 years ago when I started my curly path. I started using Devacurl because I saw through your videos and Instagram how beautiful your hair looked like with those products. I used Devacurl for about a year and a half. At the beginning my hair was looking beautiful and I loved the products. But by the end of October 2019, my scalp was itching, burning, and it look like it was snowing from my head because of the dandruff. I went to a dermatologist and the doctor give me a prescription for a medicated shampoo, and explained me that I was having an allergy reaction or a reaction to hair buildup, and that I should stop using Devacurl. I stopped that week, and even if I haven't gotten completely better, I am better than before. I just wish that everything come to an understanding because I lovedthose products.

    I have much respect for what you have done here. How you've handled this. Your courage is inspiring and truly refreshing nowadays. You are obviously a real person...not one of the "influencers" that have become cold, souless husks of their former human selves. You know the type... anything for a paycheck. You can tell that it is way too easy for them to blatantly lie even when there's receipts to the contrary. Lie to sell, lie to lie, lie to themselves, lie lie lie *tangent over*. I appreciate your values and integrity. This must have been difficult only bc you feel guilt over recommending it, but hun, you recommended it bc it worked great for you and you believed in the brand/product and wanted others to enjoy the same benefits (bc again, you care abt people. Even those u don't know;u want to better their lives). I'm sure others are upset with the long-term results but I don't believe they blame u. They see who u are. It was hugely difficult but you did it, Brave girl! You are allowed to feel relief lol. I think your honest reputation is still intact, and I wouldn't be surprised if you gained more followers bc they know they can trust you. You are the plum-sized unicorn with platinum hooves and hair of the bluest flowing water that grants wishes if u take a sip lol. That's to say Ur a rare sight on social media;thought to be myth to those of us who value integrity and honesty and truly being REAL. I despise people who make comments that are a novel like I just did. But you really inspired me to say something. And I thought you should know. And... I guess I'm still pissed about everything Jaclyn Hill has become, done, said. She could have handled her shit the way you just did but I think she can't tell a falsehood from the truth anymore. Is this the effect of technology, the age of UA-cam, tik toc, insta, tinder, pof etc., or something else?? If anyone has read this far lol please let me know what u think it's due to

      Joy Before Her I had an email back and forth conversation with deva curl and they asked me to send in my products at my own cost, which I thought was really off. They’re also asking people who contact them to answer a lengthy list of questions about how they used the products, did they read the instructions, have they changed their diet etc etc. It really is not up to those who have suffered damage to do their research for them! They should be refunding, apologising and taking responsibility. It’s bad enough that so many people have been hurt, but the way this company is dealing with its customer base is disgusting.

    I already commented but I want to comment to you. Thank you. Thank you for believing us. I started using DevaCurl because curly hair influencers recommended it but I believe we were ALL misled in this situation. I really appreciate you being honest with us and sticking up for the people who have been affected. We're facing so much gaslighting, so many accusations that it's something WE did to ourselves. So many women have spent money on dermatologists, blood work, and assumed it was something just wrong with them and now we're seeing that despite our varied backgrounds we all have ONE thing in common that has made all our hair and all the different curl types look the same: DevaCurl.
    It means a lot to hear from you about this. Thank you.

    First I want to say that I feel so bad for the people who have had these devastating problems with their hair. I can’t even imagine loosing hair, having scalp issues and losing curl. For me my curly hair has always been my security blanket, and I can’t even imagine what these poor people are going through. About 3 plus years ago I found your channel searching for ways to repair my curls. I had highlights that made some of my curl pattern go straight and not curl anymore. I am 52 years young and have always embraced my curls, so when I started loosing curls I panicked and found you, and that’s when I started using deva curl. The products were the best thing that I had ever used, and my hair looked and felt amazing. When people complimented my hair and asked me what I use I would tell them”Deva Curl!” I believed in these products so much that it didn’t matter that they were crazy expensive, I just knew they worked for me and I was going to pay high dollar for them. Although, I have not had the hair loss, i did start to notice that my curls we’re becoming a little dryer, certain parts of my curls were not as curly, and my scalp was starting to get itchy. But because I am 52 years young I thought it was a hormonal issue (and it still could be idk) so when I started seeing all the videos of what was happening I immediately stopped using them, and told some of my friends that I had told to use Deva Curl to stop! I was waiting to hear what you thought, and I’m so glad you made this video (I know it had to have been hard.) also, I will be going Florida in a couple of days for vacation, and I’m so bummed I’m coming a day after your event, I wish i could have made it. May it be a day of fun and much success! Be blessed!

    Thanks for your honest and heartfelt video. ❤️
    As for the potential issue... I saw another video suggesting that even if their ingredients did not change... they may have found different distributors for their ingredients. Not all ingredients are equal in terms of quality. You have food-grade or medical-grade products that are higher in quality and cost more. Then you have someone else manufacturing the same product that’s a lesser grade (less pure) and cheaper. We know the company has changed hands a few times. Is it possible that they decided to cut costs and increase profits in order to command a higher selling price? Might they have accomplished this by purchasing cheaper versions of their ingredients from lower-quality distributors? It’s speculation, but that kinda thing is typical for big business.

    • @camillaasraengelby
      @camillaasraengelby 4 роки тому +2

      Yes, I saw that video too. Tbh, that seems like the most plausible explanation (at this point) to this terrible situation. The suggestion in that video is that the ingredients could be adulterated by a new supplier. Like you say, not all ingredients are equal in quality. And this way Deva can honestly say that they haven’t reformulated if they only changed suppliers. Still doesn’t make it right, though.
      I’m new to the CG method and I fortunately only used Deva for roughly a month. I honestly thought that the increased hair loss, the flakes, and the horrible itching that kept me awake at night, was perhaps a part of transitioning. I feel so stupid now.
      But after I stopped using Deva it quickly stopped, and my hair loss on wash days have greatly diminished to a few strands, which I’m very grateful for, as I have very fine, medium to low density hair. My waves/curl also look a lot curlier and my hair no longer feels dry. The massive flaking and itching is also completely gone.

    Here’s my backstory....I lost my hair from cancer and having a stem cell transplant and when my hair grew back in it’s definitely curlier texture so I started using deva curl. At first I thought it was a miracle product and I pretty much bought everything I could afford and I would say halfway through using the products I started noticing how much my hair was falling out. I thought well maybe it’s the maintenance chemo that I am on or it’s just my body and hormones now but once I finished the bottle of shampoo I never bought any more and I literally don’t lose any hair now. I had some styling products left too but to be honest with you I just threw everything away because I’m too afraid to use anything from them until we figure out what’s going on.

I exclusively used it for 7 years, & everything was fine until towards the end of 2018, when I noticed a handful of hair came out during washing. That was the beginning of my nightmare. I finally stopped using using DC July of 2019, when a light went on, & I finally realized it was the damn products! I suspected it may be possibly be the fragrances; the FDA only require the word fragrance(s) to be listed in the ingredients, with no other info about them. Recently, a coworker mentioned phthalates to me; I discovered they’re used in both, perfumes & plastics. I don’t know if phthalates are in DC products & the packaging, & is the cause of the damage, but I can tell you that whatever is in those products, is so toxic that my fingernails began disintegrating from contact with them! The right thing to do would be to issue a recall so no more people need suffer!

I believe that the ingredients that's been used can be altered to look like the original ingredient which is common in the personal care industry. Its not required for cosmetic companies to test weather the ingredient is legit and therefore can cause them to integrate copycat ingredients in the product. It can also be because the products themselves are not meant to cleanse the scalp of sebum, dirt, etc. The scalp over the years accumulates so much residue that a type of yeast called Malasseiza. I feel (felt) the same way about DevaCurl products. I've used them for close to 9 years and they *worked* for me and made me love my hair. I used only their products. But in the last two years, the results just weren't the same and I was trying to figure out what was wrong with me. More and more hair was falling out, my curls fell flat, and I went from people stopping me on the street to ask about my hair to ashamed to leave the house. I think that's part of the reason people are having such a strong emotional reaction - it's a betrayal from a trusted company. I think most people just want them to take us seriously, figure out what's going on, and let us know why this happened, and instead, they deleted people's order histories and keep saying these irrelevant tests they've run prove it's fine.
    Edit: I also wanted to say that I really, really appreciate your response. I know not everyone was affected, and even I am a lucky victim because a big chop and some hair treatment have shown some promise of improvement where others can't get anything to work for them. Some influencer's responses have been very cold and victim-blamey, but your video made me feel heard even by a person who didn't personally experience problems.

    i started using deva around october (wave maker) and it did amazing wonders for me. It helped blend my textures but then when i recently repurchased i noticed it wasn’t working anymore. My hair was limp, texture was off and no volume at all. I thought maybe it was my technique for some reason but I knew it wasn’t that. The problem is we don’t know where beauty supply and other stores get there products. They can be buying from unofficial people who sell them and alter the ingredients. Luckily I had no damage like others but now I use innersense. it’s completely clean and though many think devacurl is too, it’s not. Download the Think Dirty App.

    I started noticing my hair loss Ive been using deva products on and off but started experiencing about 6 months ago I really thought it’s because of the depression or because Of postpartum but then saw the posts on deva products and was shocked. You have been the only person who was my curly inspiration and who taught me and many others how to style correctly and deva products did show me how my hair would look. So DO NOT BLAME YOURSELF IF ANYTHING YOU ARE THE VICTIM HERE! I wont go and throw my products Id just switch and see what that does. I hope they find the solution deva products did wonders for me in the past

    Thank You for your honesty. I bought it and returned it a few days later my scalp was getting red and itchy. I actually bought it for my daughter's hair and I always try any product before I use it on her hair. It sounds silly but she's only 6 and her scalp and skin are very sensitive. Two days ago you were promoting another product so I bought it. I can't wait to try it.!!!😁

    Honestly I haven’t experienced any damage and I bought my last shampoo and conditioned like a few days before the curly ninja came out with her video, it may be true that it was only a few of the products that got damaged in between, but I haven’t experienced any damaged and my hair has been so good after DC is hard to start from zero and start trying again to see what works for my hair, but I’m afraid to buy it again after I finish this bottles, hopefully they resolve the issue before that

    Joy, I am one of your first followers. I remember when you got you first big ad in Ulta for Deva. My daughter and I were so excited to see your face all big lol! I was wondering if you’d say something. The one product my daughter used religiously dried her hair in front and broker her bangs off. Thank God it isn’t huge. It’s the arc angel. I am so proud of you! I know this isn’t easy. I am a Shea Moisture ambassador and I had one small issue but they rectified it and found that it was one batch sent out to their ambassadors. I hope Deva does this. I think people just want to be heard. Many of the issues are storage and heat, so you’re correct there. Again, thanks for speaking up! Makes me happy to be a follower 🥰
