- In this video Niek and Maarten will try and highlight the differences between the 12-Fret and the 14-Fret Dreadnought. They are both using a Martin D42, one of them is a 90's Custom Shop and the other is a new Re-Imagined model. Let us know which one you think is better / or which differences you hear!

I would like to add the idea that perhaps the most important difference between the 12 fret and forfeit guitars is that the 12th fret puts the bridge much closer to the middle of the lower bout.
I personally don't like a slotted headstock at all. But that's just me. The 12 fret does sound really great though!! I'd still prefer the 14 fret dreadnought. Being brand new it sounds absolutely incredible!! I've always played nothing but Gibson acoustics and own several high end top of the line Gibsons, but just a few days ago I bought my very first Martin.. a D-35.. I absolutely love it!! I won't be playing any of my Gibson's anytime soon! My next guitar will definitely be a Martin D-42. Great video guys!
You can't go wrong with a D42, sounds like a plan! Thanks for commenting & sharing :)
Thank God Norman and Tony recorded those albums so long ago; if they hadn’t, would anyone care today about these types of guitars?
Well they helped us out for sure... ;)
I saw this video now only. But I find the sound of this 12-fretter Dread so awesome that I definitely need to play a 12-fretter Dread earlier or later. I admit, I'm biased, as I generally like the sound character of 12-fretters very much. Different position of the bridge (lower) and therefore differently moving the sound board and, thus, different sound character.
That's the sweet spot! Thanks for commenting Don :)
12-fret more warmly and balance for my ears
I think we can agree... Thanks for commenting Alex!
@@thefellowshipofacoustics Just IMHO )
6:50 Oh yeah....The 12 fret is superior
Here I am a year later watching the same video. All my fat tops are 12 fretters, from dread to size "0". Why? not because of the fret to body placement although that is certainly ergonomically superior, and not even due to the oft perceived benefit of the bridge placement.
No! It is about the width of the fretboard! The Martin designs from the 1830s to the 1930s was abut fingering placement for intricate, accurate fretting. The 14 fret incarnation was redesigned asa "rhythm" instrument to compete with the Gibson archtops in the dance band rhythm sections of dance bands when "swing" replaced New Orleans jazz and the tenor banjos needed longer thinner necks. It failed of course but the burgeoning folk music scene created a demand for strng bands and the guitarists simply got what they could. Especially idf they were only thrashing out six string chords!
With a 12 fretter you can do both, and if you have a need to play above the octave ? get a Telecaster!
Haha this is perfect! Couldn't agree more :)
prachtig geluid uit de 12 fret ideaal voor de mississippi blues :)
Zeker!
You got the stereo reversed.
Sorry 'bout that!
I'd take the 12-fret SSD over a regular dread any day , especially given it also has an open slot headstock ❣❣
i generally don't like big guitars and won't purchase a regular dread cause i think it's rather ugly shape and square, and no draw back really with the tone , but I've had many 12-fret SSD and yes they're super big , look decent , and not bad for finger style guitar !
my first 'expensive' guitar was a resale Martin HD28VS 12-fret SSD and that's only cause i couldn't afford a new OOO-28VS is what i really wanted ; but it was big warm beautiful guitar for sure !
I fully agree with you man! 12-frets are amazingly underrated ;)
Are there any more affordable 12 fret acoustic guitars that can be bought and played that are decent alternatives to the over-a-thousand-buck varieties? I've always played guitars with 14 frets to where it meets the body, but have been thinking about trying to get a 12 fret guitar.
Well, you have plenty of parlor-models at that price point with 12 frets to the body. But not many builders make them with a large body like these Martins. IRIS guitars makes a fantastic Roy Smeck model that starts under 3k :)
Alvarez MDR70ESB. 12 fret dread made with really nice materials and definitely less than grand USD
Sigma too has a few in their lineup. The SDR-28s and SDM-18s ought to come under a grand odd.
Get a used Martin 000-15SM
Oh Boy, I wish I had seen this video back in March! That 12 fret custom shop would have had me ringing you right away. I would even have traded my original Collings for it! 12 fret guitars are far more comfortable for me and a lot of other folks who do intricate flat-picking. I now only have three Collings 12 fret dreads but that Martin was great over all.
The 12c fret sded better but it does have 20 years of maturing over the new 14 fretter. Please let me know if it ever comes back into the shop!
Btw - the nut width on the 12 would probably have been 47.6 m/m - 1 & 7/8" with a 2 & 3/8" (60.3 m/m) string spacing.
and ....Niek was playing "Jimmy Brown the News Boy" - see I know my old bluegrass!
Thanks boys.

Thanks for commenting! I'll surely let you know if that Martin ever returns to our shop :) Niek was sure playing some Flatt & Scruggs ;)
Thank you, and love your video by the way! Nice Collings you have there ;)
Not that fair, as slotted headstock is a lot different to concert one.
True, but there aren't that much 12-fret guitars without a slotted headstock - it's part of the whole 12-fret vibe, in my opinion, and because it's common around 12-fret guitars, it's a comparison of two authentic guitars with the full vibe of each.
@@arvedbohn6133 Good point... We are looking to make a video on the Slotted Headstock and a regular headstock, we're still looking for a fair comparison!
Nice Video👍
Thanks Oliver!
The 12 fret has more bass and more depth of tone. But the 14 fretter sounds just fine!
Playability of 12 frets tends to be outrageous.
Depends where you need to go!
Especially at 14th fret.
The 12 fret wins.
Prices please ?
These guitars are already sold.
❤
I'd do the 12 slotted head. But that's me.

I was looking at acoustic guitars online and was wondering what on earth does a 14-fret guitar mean as there was obviously 20 frets on the guitar. You made a video about the subject but failed to explain what it means by definition. I can see what it means but I think you did not do a very good job here. If e.g. visually impaired persons watch/listen this video they won't know what's the physical difference between 12-fret and 14-fret guitars.
Good point, I think with the guitars used and our target audience, most people would get the point though. Thanks for sharing!
