- Taking a listen to a Mahogany dreadnaught and a Mahogany 000, two of the most common body shapes in the acoustic guitar world.
A lot of generalizations are made about each body shape, so it's always entertaining to see if they hold up, at least in a recording environment.
As always, it's just for fun!

I wanted a 00018 so bad, almost bought one, but I played a D18, and went with it. Something about that bottom end drew me in. They’re both amazing guitars.
What I like about your videos is that you don't make the video about you, e.g., blabbering, showcasing playing skills, etc. You just deliver consistent samples of the guitars tone using similar patterns for 121 comparisons. Its really good to be able to bounce back and forth to various points of the video for direct compares. I'm usually bad at remembering to hit the thumbs up but Im working on that so video owners get due credit vs just comments. Thanks. BTW, both these guitars sound great. I think I prefer the 000.
When a guitar is that good, you cannot just decide which one is better. You gotta appreciate each for their unique sound and tonality. Basically you gotta have the money to buy both.
correct. I don't have any problems that a few zillion dollars wouldn't fix.
Love both but as a home hobbyist who doesn't need the extra projection and plays sitting down, the 000's comfort was the deciding factor. So easy to sit with, like holding a baby. I did get one with an Adirondack top and bracing...sweet mellow tone now and I expect sweeter as the years go by. I also love the simpler aesthetics of all the 18s...
Hi there, I am in the sane „dilema“ trued the D18 and love the sound, but there is something about the intimacy (if thst is a word? English isn‘t my language :-) thst is just nice and it inspires me. Like you I just play as a hobby, for myself, bedroom player, 99% seated…the 000 is just so comfy and the short scale easy to play. The thing is I am mostly strumming, sort of still a beginner and I guess. Dread my be the better choice for now, but this is most likely
THE Guitar for a long time ( I turn 50 soon and even though I an strummer, I think 000 is the better choice going fwd.) hard to decide. As you I have an Adi top version in mind, might help a bit with headroom if I get a bit wild :-)
The 000 just inspires me more, hard to explain. And I don‘t see myself enjoying tje shape of a dread for much longer…even though I am 6.3‘ maybe I am wrong….ufff
You still love the 000 no regrets? If you were a strummer mostly, still the 000 (with Adi :-)

@@michel559 Hi, i do love the 000 and have no regrets about buying...that said you might also look at Martin's OM 28, which is exact same body as 000 but long scale (25.4 vs 24.9) and rosewood back/sides...might be a little better suited for strumming...they're both wonderful, heirloom instruments and you won't go wrong with either...
and btw, if you're a semi-beginner strummer you can learn a lot of really pretty progressions watching Ian's demo videos..enjoy!
@@WScott-gd2mj thanks a lot for coming back! Yeah I did try an OM28 and it was maybe the best alrounder of the 3, D18, 000-18 and OM28. I need to give them another spin. Somehow I like the combo short scale and mahogany b&s, not so the 000-28 too dark and mellow, but the OM28 is a different story.

I have a 000-18 and have been thrilled with it. It perfectly (eerily) captures every nuance of what I'm trying to express with my playing, which is pretty heavy with fingerpicking. Just a joy to play. Ever since I heard "Dimming of the Day," I knew THAT was the sound I wanted (wish I had Richard's chops).
However, I never tried a D-18 and have wondered if I made a mistake. I mean, Gordon Lightfoot and Lindsey Buckingham recorded a lot of classics with a D-18.
This video really reaffirmed I made the right choice for what I do. I could see adding a D-18 down the road, but if I could only have one Martin, the 000-18 is the best fit for me.
Thanks for the video. Guitars are like sonic snowflakes. Each one is distinct. You really have to play a few of the same model to find the one with the tone that speaks to you.
This 000 sounds amazing, just wow. Would love to try the 0018 some time soon. Appreciate your vids alot Ian.
My preference is the 00-18V I have a 2015 with highly figured mahogany backs and sides.
I have owned 15 Martins since 1961.
These new 00018s are amazing. The scalloped bracing really gets that top going and its probably the most comfortable steel string I've ever played.

Congratulations! I played quite a few of them before I picked mine out and almost all of them sounded great. Martin really knocked it out of the park with these.
@@ianmeadows6351 I came very close to trading my 000-18 in......for 5 years I cussed that guitar and went through different strings.........nothing......very uninspiring.....then last week something happened.....Im pushing 63 and have hand pain so I decided to drop down to 11s and tried the one string on the 000-18 that I had not so far.....Elixer polyweb PB 11s.........that Martin came to life like no guitar I've ever seen......at 5 it has decided to join the world of Martin std..it is loud and has some incredible character...overtones.....etc......amazing! I've decided to keep it!!!.
The D seems to have more range, color, depth, etc. The 000 sounds great , but maybe more one dimensional. If i have to choose one, it’s the D. I could listen to the D for hours.
Exactly. Only issue I have with 000s is they're very one dimensional
Wait 5 years. These are new guitars and they change for the better. Some old 00018s sound “3D” to me.

Just figure it out by ear... its 4 simple chords... just the fingerpicking is a bit tricky! Just learn how to finger pick with your thumb and then listen to this vid carefully and figure out exactly what he is playing!
You can also slow the video way down, many people learn songs with that.

The D-18 body dimensions are just too uncomfortable to sit down with for long sets. It sounds absolutely killer but not worth the shoulder pain for me. Feels like I have my arms around a hot water tank. I love my 000-18. Its very close to the D-18 in sound, but very comfortable to play for long stretches of time.
Both beautiful. I choose the D. Short scale on the 000 makes it just a bit woofy.
I've owned the D, now I have the 000 and I'm torn, kinda miss the D now.

Ian if I own an HD28 Adi custom would you buy a D18 or the 000-18 for your next guitar? I’m keeping the HD28 but getting a new guitar with a pickup and I’m torn like many. Knowing I have An HD18 would you go with the 000 or stay dreadnaught? I do like the loud sound of the d but I’m also sure that the 000 has power too and I am not an expert. Please help?
Hey Ryan, it all depends on your needs. If you like dreads, go with the d18. If you want something with a little bit of a different feel and playability the 00018 would be a great compliment to the HD28

Which do you prefer?
I love the Boom of the Dread but the comfort of the 000. One day I will have to make a decision when I finally get that 28 series.
They also have a deep body option for the 00 size. Adds a great amount of bass to the smaller size.
I like them both with a slight edge to D...
A little more meaty on the strumming.
Would the 000 be closer to a J 45 being slightly more focused ? Either one is a winner in my books though ... Awesome as always Ian... Thank you sir ... 🙏

What strings are you using?
To me a D18 always sounds like it wants to play bluegrass and the 00018 can play that and everything else.
Take the 000-18 to a bluegrass jam. Nobody will hear you.
Thanks for this! I've been debating these two for a few months as considering a larger bodied guitar to pair with my lovely 0018v. I like the size and scale of 000, but feel more drawn to sound of D18, any thoughts or opinions...

I am fortunate enough to own one of each. The Dreadnaught has an Adirondack top. Each has its unique voice.
I feel and think absolutely like you. So i really struggle which guitar i should buy. Both i can't afford.
@@seviswitzerland3470 I bought a D18, loved the sound of it, but could not get on with it's dimensions of body and scale, sold it for what I bought it. I may have persevered if it had a smaller scale length.

I prefer the clarity and balance of the 000-18. I also value the comfort of of it when I sit on my couch and relax with it. The short scale is easy on my old fingers. I am prejudiced however, as my first Martin was a new 1963 000-18. I had it for 30 years before switching to Martin dreadnaughts, I now have a 2018 000-18, and much prefer it to the dreads, and to my original 000-18. Dare I say how special the new ones are?
The 000 sounds more focused, a little brighter, with less range - (not a criticism).
The D sounds bigger, boulder and warmer.
Both are great guitars and how you play and sing should determine the tone you prefer.

so last week here in sam ash nyc I played my first 00018...loved it...BUT I also played an om 28...wow very close! Either would suit me just fine..something about the om 28....hmmmnnnnn

I swear that dread sounds better finger-picked I know that sounds weird but I don't know. Something about it. Either way, Addy would have the notes pop off the 18 better imo and make it a better all around guitar than Sitka
Ian, D-18 or 000-18? I need an experts advise as im thinking of buying one of the two. If i had enough money id just buy both to save the conflict running in my head at the moment...
Depends on the use case! I think the 000-18 is more versatile if you are not an aggressive strummer
