It seems likely that this was a 'fume event' where bleed air from the engines which is used for air conditioning and pressurisation was contaminated with engine lubricating oil as a result of failed engine bearing seals. It has the characteristic 'dirty socks' smell and contains an organophosphate additive which can seriously affect people, making them nauseous or weak and may have long term health issues. NOT to be joked about.

@@Madmax0620 we didn't get a great answer. I couldn't smell anything, though whatever it was seemed to be towards the back of the cabin/rear bulkhead. I chatted with some flight attendants afterwards and they were also guessing that if whatever it was was lighter than air it'd be the flight attendants who get affected the most, but really no one had any clue. Generally seems like a third of the passengers smelled nothing, another third said it smelled like rancid socks, and the remainder said it smelled like burning. The whole process of getting us rebooked at Logan was an adventure in it of itself.

The clear and concise transmissions used in this episode are 'textbook effective' with respect to their getting the emergency rerouted, and the situation well and confidently controlled. There's no question, that this was a well-seasoned flight crew.

Imagine that you are 10 years old and flying from Frankfurt to Nuremberg and everyone on the plane gets sick, passengers, stewardesses, pilots.
It happened to me in 1962 on Lufthansa as we flew from London.
They gave everyone on the plane a choice of apple, tomato or orange juice.
A few minutes later, the plane hit an air pocket or clear air turbulence and we dropped 7,000 feet in a minute and then another 3,000 ft,
The problem was that the whole plane was vomiting. They ran out of vomit bags, People were vomiting into the seat backs, the floor, even their coffee cups and hats and the flight crew was vomiting too.
At 10 you don't have much of a life, but I swore never to fly Lufthansa again.
They recovered and we landed safely and I asked the Captain how far we dropped and he told me.
They had to scrub out the plane and it was awful inside.

This was only one day after it made the emergency landing at Boston. AA claimed it was spilled cleaning products in the galley. I’m a little surprised that this didn’t trigger a HazMat response when the Flight Attendants started becoming incapacitated? There’s kind of a difference between “a reported smell of dirty socks” and “all 9 flight attendants overcome with nausea, dizziness, etc.” And no everything is not A-ok. That it is mainly hitting the FA’s probably means whatever it is, is lighter than the cabin air, and is collecting in the head space above the aisle, between the overhead bins. Which is in itself worrying as the most common lighter than air things on an airplane are byproducts of something burning.

It sounds to me like this is a typical case of Tricresylphosphate (TCP) poisoning in the cabin of this aircraft! One of the typical signs of it is the smell of stinky socks like in this case! This issue is related to the intake of air through the engine and the valve between the engine and the intake system of air is damaged and makes it possible for the TCP - which is a fluid to prevent the oil in the hydraulic system of the engine to get thick in the cold air in this altitudes and let them run properly - to get mixed in the air for the cabin inside the aircraft! This TCP has serious side effects on people who got in contact with it and it is a serious problem for all people inside aircraft's! Airbus aircraft's have a lot of problems with it and pilots and flight attendants got very sick because of this problem, but Airbus doesn't want to change the system which is responsible for this matter! During the development of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner there was a similar incident during an American Airline flight with a Boeing 767 which brought 13 people in hospitals after the flight and this incident has made it that Boeing changed the system for the intake of air through the engine in its new developed Boeing 787 Dreamliner and separated it completely so this problem won't happen in this aircraft at all! That's what I can say about it! Lovely greetings from Captain Sarah Sutter (Boeing 747-400F and Boeing 747-400BCF) 🙋💖✈️

There has been a few cases of certain hydraulic oils and such leaking and entering the cabin air system via the engine intakes, leading to sickness....in fact there is a growing call to investigate some of the chemicals and such that the flight crew and attendants are exposed to with flying so much, that has potentially led to elevated levels of sickness among flight attendants, and even cancers.
