There is more to this than a great opening song at a huge festival.
They are serious history buffs and every line of every song of theirs is historically accurate.
They are not glorifying war, they are telling true stories that have happened, from every side.
During and after WWII, both the allies and the later occupying Soviet union, told that the Polish had been weak and cowardly during the war. With the songs 40:1 and Uprising, Sabaton has rewritten the history books, giving Poland back their deserved pride and respect. As a sign of gratitude they were, on stage, given a sword by the Arch bishop(!) with the words "The church bows to a metal band"!
Sabaton are regarded as national heroes in Poland and this crowd shows it. The fact that this song is about the German invasion of France doesn't affect that.

    • @vicenteraira

They even have a song about 3 Brazilian soldiers (Arlindo Lúcio, Geraldo Rodrigues and Geraldo Baêta) who died in Montese, Italy fighting for the Allies side (yeah! Brazil took part in the WWII) against a whole German platoon. After running out of ammo and being told to surrender (let's be fair), those 3 guys ignored the foe's plea and ran against the Wehrmacht troops with their bayonets attached to their rifles not fearing the certain death. The Germans, of course, shot them to death. But understanding their bravery, value and sacrifice, their commander ordered that 3 graves were dug to bury their deceased enemies and put a plate: "Drei Brazilianischen Helden" (Three Brazilian Heroes).
Pointless to tell that almost none knows about it in Brazil, last time Sabaton came to Brazil, they got a medal from the army. I am sure they got all these homages around the world with their work of Historical rescue. And that is pretty worthy, imo.

Yeah they are historically correct if you buy the history written by the victors.. LOL..!! So the truth level is about zero null and void in most of their songs...!!

I doubt that they are not glorifying war. Yes their claim is "we only tell what happened". But the way they do it (packing it into heroic sounding hymns) and making people party, sing along and have a good time, has the effect of glorifying war in the end. Intentional or not, they are glorifying war.

    • @Illaga1
      @Illaga1 3 роки тому +35

@@markusnaher56 Semantics but Rock- and metal music is designed to provoke a certain type of emotions. They could be singing about dragons and demons or football but they chose true stories that in them selves have a lot of emotion. Ones personal interpretation is very much up to preconceptions but they are not "intentionally trying to make you feel that war is a good thing". If you feel that way then read the lyrics carefully and look at their history channel for the backstory of the song.
Or just listen to Dragon force.

Or in short (and also the best description of Sabaton I've ever read, so I had to steal it): Sabaton is like someone screaming a Wikipedia article.
Yes, they are a bit too much into war for my taste. Yes, they also have songs putting the emphasis on the terrors of war and they often tell the stories of the brave underdogs.
I wouldn't be surprised to find a fair amount of people with varying flavours of weird political ideas among their fans, but I don't think they get people to having those either.

Sabaton is very popular, even beloved, here in Poland. This was the first time they played on Woodstock and probably the last as the organizers said they drew too big a crowd and more people showed up than they could reasonably provide security for (Woodstock is free).
I myself have been to their shows three times and they have always such a great energy and chemistry on stage! Actually chatting away with the audience and joking around. One time, during concert, Joakim (the vocalist) actually said "Wait a minute, we came here to play heavey metal not to talk to you people!" :D
And they always draw such multi-generetional crowds, from childrens to seniors. And on smaller venues, they tend to grab some small kid from the audience, get them onto the stage and take pictures, and have them "perform" for a song, get a ride on that tank of theirs (yes, that is an actual tank they travel with).
    They're just super awesome.

The reported numbers vary because when crowds get this big, that's what happens. There's 600.000 to 800.000 people there. The one I would suggest to you would be 40:1 from the same concert. The reason? The battle that song is about took place where the audience and stage are now standing. It's about Polish soldiers, performed in Poland to a proud Polish audience. If you can find the extended version where after the song finishes the entire audience sings their national anthem, even better. I barely connect to music, and this performance knowing these things gives me shivers.

I’m a 66 year old metal/head I’m obsessed with this band. Discovered them about one year ago ( Floor Jansen husband is the Drummer). I’m going to compare Nightwish to Saboton in this way- Their Lyrics/sound/ performance is All the message. They are not political their message is historic heroic sacrifices of soldiers throughout history. When have you ever heard these words to describe metal-Angelic-dreamy-beautiful Nightwish, Saboton-Intelligemt-inspirational Their live performances are epic but their videos of their songs are powerful, educational, & are sometimes tough to get thru they are that good! Try the Videos of, Price of a Mile, Metal Machines, Night Witches( Soviet female pilots), Winged Hussars( elite polish Calvary). They are so passionate about historical moments & accuracy that they have Saboton History, I ask you to check them out, you don’t have to review this on your channel( although that would be awesome) but for your own education into metal being intelligent, thoughtful, inspirational, angelic, hard pounding riffs & sounds. Love your thoughts & knowledge of music, sounds & performance stay safe be well & ROCK ON!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Nearly 20 years later there he still is and honestly I couldn't imagine anyone else being their singer. It's also good to hear you giving him compliments on his voice considering he doesn't think he is a very good singer.
As far as suggestions for further songs to react to I'd suggest "40:1" live at Woodstock 2012 (same show as this one) or if you want something recent I'd say "uprising" live in Warsaw or "the Red Baron" live in Berlin both from The Great Tour. If you're ever curious about the historical events that inspired their songs you might want to check out their history channel on UA-cam, they do have a lot of interesting information on there.

I would highly recommend checking out En Livstid i krig live, it is a more recent video and while Sabaton does a lot of powerful songs, this is a ballad that has two variants with different lyrics. In Swedish, which is the name of the song I listed, it is from the perspective of a Swedish soldier in the 30 years war, in english A Lifetime of War, it is from the perspective of an outside observer wondering how humanity itself can continue after 3 decades of brutal, cruel warfare never before seen on such a scale and not surpassed in brutality and casualties until WW1.
Edit: Note if you do En Livstid I Krig live, put on the subtitles so you can see the English lyrics and get that side of the story.

As a veteran, Sabaton is one of my two favorite bands of all time. I often listened to them on my way to work (I was an artilleryman). Their music got me pumped for the day. I would listen to their songs about soldiers in the Army Tradition, such as Audie Murphy and Alvin York. They sing about the 101st and 82nd and everything in between. Perhaps my favorite song of theirs is Carolus Rex (English Version). And when I really need an adrenaline push I listen to Sparta.

"He who stops learning is old... he may be 20 or 80..." (Henry Ford). Let me start with this quote - anyone following your channel will quickly realize that you are very far from being old - no genre is too exotic for you not to make a reaction video about it. And that's a good thing - stagnation is regression and you have to avoid that at all costs in these times.
Sabaton is power metal and nobody embodies this better than Joakim. He is so full of energy and brings it on stage. It is always a pleasure to see this band on stage. Not only that they often give a history lesson - no, the music is audible and melodic. Joakim has a style of his own, and even that is not self-evident in today's world - in which more and more mainstream is being ironed out. I love Metal because it is honest and has a good fanbase. Metalheads always stand together, check out the big festivals - it's always a pleasure to be part of something like that. Hopefully next year again.
Sabaton is definitely worth a closer look - be it the older tracks like the one about Swedish history. I would perhaps advise you to start with the older things, into something with something like that: ua-cam.com/video/WBs3G1PvyfM/v-deo.html -- this live recording is from sweden, their home country. I promise you goosebumps over goosebumps

Let's talk about theory for a second why this song feels like it's a fright train slamming into you. It's that way by design, I'll cover the historical value in a second but musically this song is almost all inverted power chords on guitar that have the Fifth added in the bass, F# second fret on a guitar frets 3-5 are the punchiest on the guitar in any tuning. This song lives there so it hits very hard sonically. The pace is tied to the theme. So for the Historical part.
The song is about Erwin Rommel's 7th Panzer division, He was an absolute master of Blitzkrieg, Going so far that even his own high command half the time didn't know where he was. He would hit where no one expected. The speed and surprise tactics were very successful tools to demoralize his enemies, The french started calling them Le Division Fantome, "The ghost division". keeping the theme in mind, a Panzer Battalion whose claim to fame was coming from seemingly nowhere, often behind where the allies thought their lines still were. The pace of the song, that hard hitting feeling is exactly the goal. It represents the speed and chaos of the tactics. Speed, Fury, Organized Chaos.
As many people have pointed out, Sabaton sometimes gets a lot of flak because they don't shy away from telling stories from all sides of the way, There was a quote they have reiterated several times, They just tell the stories without regard to the sides. So there are songs that are from a Nazi side, some from Polish, Some the British sides. They are record keepers though, They chronical and recount events. They absolutely just sing history. The quote from the band is "We don't glorify anything, we just tell stories about things that happened.

Essentially symphonic and power metal ARE classical.
Beethoven would go to Nightwish and say "what aren't all musicians like this?" he would probably realize that the 9th Symphony leads fairly directly to Ghost Love Score.
Mozart meanwhile will be scrambling to work with Sharon den Adel on a whole opera, and probably (bad boy) begging to guest on a Maria Brink track as himself but dead again. Chopin will actually join Lovebites and Liszt will try to get Exit Eden back together but settle for a slot on Babymetals backup.
Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev will fight over who gets to do a movie soundtrack with Sabaton.
Stravinsky meanwhile will be asking Marilyn Manson for tips on how to upset prudes & such in a permissive age.

The energy levels are absolutely one of the things in heavy metal that makes the genre so appealing. Personally I love the high energy. About Sabaton: First of all: your pronounciation of the band name was perfect. The singer’s name is Joachim Brodén (yo-ah-keem bro-then). The band sings about historical events and objects in military history. In this case the song Ghost devision tells the story of Erwin Rommel’s 7th panzer division (a tank devision) in WW1, also known as the ghost devision. They got that name for two reasons: the division progressed so fast that both the allied as well as their own army leaders lost track of where they were. The other reason is the amount of dead bodies they left behind while marching on.
The band does not glorify war or violence, consider them to be a musical version of your history teacher. 😉😎
Other suggestions for sabaton: The official video of the song ‘Bismarck’, the official video of the song ‘Fields of Verdun’, the live video of 40:1 (forty to one) from this same concert (woodstock), and the live version of ‘The price of a mile’ from Wacken Open Air 2019. This last song features a great male choir and is very impressive! If you want to get to know the band members a bit better then I can highly reccommend to watch their tour vlogs from last year, as these guys are very funny but most of all, they are nice guys. As a bonus it gives a nice peek behind the scenes of a touring band. I can also reccommend their other youtube channel ‘Sabaton History’. In this channel they publish short, 15 minutes documentaries in which host and historian Indy Neidell explains the story behind he songs.
Fun fact: the current drummer of the band ( not the one you have seen) is married to Floor Jansen!

Also... you mentioned how he could do classical, react to "En livstid i Krig" (A lifetime at War) - live from Gothenburg from the Great Tour", someone else already mentioned it in the comments. It's not classical, it's still very much sabaton, but it's a slower and (if you turn the english subtitles on) sadder song, but oh so good. Honestly cried to that one the first time, and every time after there's still some eyewatering happening xD... but i digress. I'd honestly encourage you to react to... everything they have xD, several of the ones in this very comment section are awesome. Also, it might not be strictly musical but, Sabaton has a second channel called "Sabaton history" where a band member and a historian go over in deeper detail on the historical event that each song is about, followed by a section where they talk how that particular song came to be. I'd say react to it, but even if no they're quite the watch.

Oh this was such a wonderful reaction, well you have plenty of them I do enjoy all your reactions so very much. You are fantastic :)
I am so glad you reacted to this song, it is one of my favourites by this band from Sweden (a swede here myself, and very proud we have this kind of talents making their way in the world)
I saw this band in concert in february just before we needed to social distance, it is a very treasured memory for me. My very first metal concert and it was the very best concert I've ever been to. They had so much energy on stage and I believe everyone in the crowd sang along with the songs. They actually opened with this song, from what I understand they usually do that. I get really excited and feel the blood pump as well by this song.
And I agree with you, I don't know a lot about singing but I do know from experience that walking and singing is very tough to do without getting breathy. And Joakim runs around the stage, keeps the crowd going and sings like he does for two hours. At the concert I saw, he pulled on a gasmask and some kind of tank thing on his back and walked around singing. That was just so impressive, he is a beast indeed.
It very much shows how much they love what they do, they are truly amazing musicians.
If you wanna check out a slower song by Sabaton , how about a lifetime of war, preferably the live version from the great tour. It is a beautiful experience.
Otherwise, I would recommend going for either Carolus rex or Bismarck.
Take care Christie, and thank you for being the wonderful person that you are

If you want to hear something slower by Sabaton, yet just as powerful, I recommend "Purple Heart" and "The Ballad of Bull" by them. "Purple Heart" is a tribute to all American soldiers who've been wounded or lost their lives in combat, and "The Ballad of Bull" is about an Australian stretcher-bearer (medic) during WW II who was awarded the Silver Star by the U.S. for saving the lives of 12 American soldiers.
Also, Corporal Leslie "Bull" Allen's deeds that day inspired the scene in Forrest Gump where he kept running into the killzone to rescue his fellow soldiers.

If you want to hear something more classical out of Sabaton, try The Ballad of Bull. Beautiful, lyrical, and really showcases that sonorous voice.

This 2019 Wacken 2 hour show is fantastic on more than one level. Pär's speech is fantastic and the show is awesome.

      Reasons could include:
When listening to music with a strong percussion beat, the human heart will attempt to match the beat, especially in a live concert like this. The beat is loud enough to actually vibrate your chest.
When you feel emotions like excitement or fear, it causes increased heart rate. When the music increases the heart rate, it causes feedback to the brain: Since you have the side effect from excitement, you must be excited.
This is their opening song for the set, so they want the speed to change the audience heart rate/energy level up quickly. The fast change is more dramatic and again helps set the emotions they want the audience to feel.
And the audience won't fight against those emotions. After all, that's most of the reason they're there.

You should listen to another Swedish band, Ghost. I think Tobias (the singer) have great vocals.
Ghost - Mary On A Cross
Another band with cool vocals are ofcourse Rammstein.
    Rammstein - Ausländer
